Tyler Benson’s winning goal helps determined Giants fend off Thunderbirds By Ryan Lehal Metro

Vancouver Giants defenceman Josh Thrower loses control of the puck after trying to make a move on Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Logan Flodell during the first period of Monday's WHL game in Vancouver.

On Family Day in British Columbia, the Vancouver Giants and Seattle Thunderbirds started Pacific Coliseum off with some fireworks of their own. Less than 30 seconds in to Monday afternoon’s Western Hockey League game saw two of the biggest players on the ice square off after the play. Vancouver’s 6’5” defenceman Mason Geertsen fought with the 6’5″ Thunderbird defencemen Jared Hauf and both got their fair share of shots in. In a first period dominated by Seattle penalties, Vancouver peppered opposition goaltender Logan Flodell with 16 shots in the opening frame, but he was more than ready for them, a day before his 18th birthday. It wasn’t until 8:44 of the second period until one of the two teams was able to breakthrough, as Seattle’s Lane Pederson buried the puck short-side off of a two-on-one rush. After Vancouver’s Jackson Houck tied the game with his 17th goals of the season, Jakob Stukel gave the Giants the lead with his last-minute dangle down low. After trading the next five goals, Giants forward Tyler Benson was able to put an end to the madness after being sent in all alone and ripping one top corner, giving the Giants the lead and eventually the win 5-4. “He was kind of deep in his net, so there was really no chance to deke” Benson said. “I just shot it at that top glove side and I just had to get it quick off my stick.” “We found a way,” said head coach Claude Noel, commending his team for fighting through the fatigue of playing two days ago. “He’s [Benson] just a really good player. He plays the game to win and he finds a way to get it done.” With this win, the Giants remain a point behind the Kamloops Blazers for third position in the B.C. division.
