PROJECT 1 THE ARCHICOMICS

WEEK 1 A DAY IN A LIFE OF AN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT BRIEF:IN A GROUP OF 5, REFLECT ON THE LIFE OF AN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT IN STUDIO FOR 1 WHOLE DAY WITH A 'BEST DAY SCENARIO'.

BRIEF: USING THE SCENARIOS NARRATED, MIND MAPS WERE PRODUCED TO VISUALIZE THE ARCHITECTURE EDUCATION OR THE INNOVATION IN THAT SCENARIO

WEEK 2 DESIGN RESPONSE BRIEF:EACH GROUP MEMBER MUST DEVELOP 1 IDEA AS A DESIGN RESPONSE TO THE SUGGESTIONS OR PROBLEMS STATED EARLIER. THE GROUP WILL THEN DEBATE AND CHOOSE 1 BEST IDEA.

'HOLOGRAM IN EDUCATION' PREPARED BY, HEE JIA HXEN

'PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO', PREPARED BY LYE SUCHIN

'THE SNOOZE LOUNGE', PREPARED BY MONICA LEE KAM YING

'HANDS-ON WORK PROJECT', PREPARED BY PUAH SUET QI

CONCLUSION:THIS IDEA IS CHOSEN AMONG THE 5 OF THEM BECAUSE THE IDEA IDEA GIVEN SOLVES MOST PORBLEMS FACED BY CURRENT ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS, WHICH ARE FINANCE AND LACK OF TIME. THIS IDEA IS CHOSEN IS BECAUSE THE POINTS GIVEN ARE COMPACT, RELIABLE AND EASIER TO BE ACHIEVED.

'MY OWN SHOP', PREPARED BY LEE JIE NING

WEEK 3 THE 'ARCHICOMIC' BRIEF:STUDENTS ARE TO CREATE AN 'ARCHICOMIC' BASED ON A DAY OF AN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT EXPERIENCING THE GROUP DESIGN PROPOSAL DONE IN WEEK 2. TECHNICAL DRAWINGS ARE DRAWN TO SHOW THE ACTUAL SIZE AND SCALE OF THE PROPOSED IDEA.

PROJECT 2 DESIGNING WITH SITE

WEEK 4 ENVISIONING ON A POSTCARD BRIEF:EACH STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO DRAW ON AN A6 POSTCARD TO EXPRESS HOW THEY ENVISION THE BUILDING TO BE. LATER, ON AN A3 CARTRIDGE PAPER TO SHOW THE EXPLANATION OF THE ENVISIONED BUILDING IN DIAGRAMS, IN TERMS OF LIGHTING, LAYERS, SCALE AND COMPOSITION.

A6 POSTCARD: ENVISIONED BUILDING

A3 CARTRIDGE: EXPLANATION IN DIAGRAMS

WEEK 5 SITE VISIT & ANALYSIS BRIEF:IN A GROUP OF 4, EACH STUDENTS ARE TO RECORD DIAGRAMMATICALLY THE SIZE AND ZONING OF THE SITE. THE POINTS INCLUDED: - DIMENSIONS OF THE BOUNDARIES OF THE SITE - SQUARE METRE OF BUILDABLE AREA INSIDE SETBACKS - BUILDING HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS - NUMBER OF PARKING SPACES REQUIRED

S.W.O.T STRENGTH

- THE SITE SUGGESTED IS LOCATED SOUTH OF BUKIT NANAS. BUKIT NANAS IS VIRGIN TROPICAL RAIN FOREST RESERVE IN KUALA LUMPUR. - GREAT POTENTIAL FOR FUTURE INTEGRATION WITH PASSICE DESIGN ON SITE. - GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPROVING THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS

WEAKNESS

- THE SITE ID DIRECTLY NEXT TO A BUSY ROAD. PARKING SPACES ARE HIGHLY DISCOURAGED. THEREFORE AMOUNT SURFACE PARKING REDUCED A LOT. - SITE IS IN CENTRE OF KUALA LUMPUR. BUILDING PROPOSED ENCOURAGED TO BE HIGH-RISED. - SITE IS NEXT TO RESERVED FOREST, EXCAVATION FOR UNDERGROUND PARKING WILL AFFECT THE FOREST.

OPPORTUNITY

- SITE LOCATED IN THE CENTRE OF KUALA LUMPUR. CENTRE MAY BECOME A NEW ATTRACTION FOR TOURISTS. - CENTRE MAY IMPROVE THE AESTHETICS OF THE LOCATION. - CREATE AN ARCHITECTURAL ENVIRONMENT THAT IS INTUITIVE AND ENRICHING WITHOUT LOSING SIGHT OF THE EXPERIENCE AND ENCOUNTER.

THREAT

- THE SITE CONSISTS PART OF THE SLOPE OF BUKIT NANAS. HEAVY RAIN MIGHT CAUSE FLASH FLOODS WIHICH WILL AFFECT THE CARS WHICH PARK UNDERGROUND. - EXCAVATION FOR UNDERGROUND PARKING AFFECT TOPOGRAPHY, CAUSING LANDSLIDES - DRIVE SPEED AND POLLUTION IS PERFECTLY LINEAR. THE EXTREME TRAFFIC INFLUENCES AIR QUALITY AND NOISE DISTRACTION.

BRIEF:A6 POSTCARD FROM WEEK 4 WERE BROUGHT TO SITE. A SHOT WAS TAKEN DURING THE DAY OR NIGHT TO EXAMINE ITS COMPATIBILITY TO THE SITE. A 500 WORD ESSAY IS WRITTEN WITH ARCHITECTURE LANGUAGE ON ITS COMPATIBILITY AND INCOMPATIBILITY TO THE SITE. REASONS TO BE STATED CLEARLY.

WEEK 6 DESIGN RESPONSE

BRIEF:EACH STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE 7 CUBES WITH 10cmx10cmx5cm. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TRANSLATE DESIGN RESPONSE FOR EACH CRITERIA INTO THE CUBES, ONE CRITERIA PER CUBE. CRITERIAS INCLUDED: - TOPOGRAPHY - PEDESTRIANS & VEHICULAR CIRCULATIONS - NOISE & SMELL - SUNLIGHT - VIEW - RAIN - WIND

EXPLANATION:THE SITE CONSISTS PART OF THE SLOPE OF BUKIT NANAS. THE BUILDING IS ELEVATED HIGHER BLOCK BY BLOCK IN ORDER TO FIT INTO THE TOPOGRAPHY.

EXPLANATION: HUGE SPACES CRETE IN THE FRONT FACADE IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLES AND PEDESTRIANS TO WALK IN AND ENTER THE BUILDING. BOTH PARTIES WILL USE THE SAME PATHWAY. HUGE SPACES CREATED TO AS A SENSE OF WELCOMING.

EXPLANATION:THE SITE IS DIRECTLY NEXT TO THE BUSY ROAD OF RAJA CHULAN. VERTICAL GARDENS ARE PROPOSED ON THE FRONT FACADE OF THE BUILDING WHICH CAN HELP TO DIFFUSE THE SMELL AND NOISE FROM THE VEHICLES.

EXPLANATION: THE LEFT AND RIGHT FACADE ARE DIRECTLY FACING EAST AND WEST WHICH WILL RECEIVE DIRECT SUNLIGHT. THIN OPENINGS PROPOSED TO ONLY ALLOW LESS LIGHT TO PENETRATE IN, WHICH WILL CREATE SHADING EFFECT IN THE INTERRIOR.

EXPLANATION: THE FRONT FACADE IS FACING A BUSY ROAD, WHILE THE REAR FACADE IS FACING THE FOREST. LESS OPENING IS PROPOSED ON THE FRONT TO PROVIDE PRIVACY; HUGE OPENINGS AT THE REAR TO ALLOW HUMAN TO VIEW AND EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF NATURE.

EXPLANATION: ROOF DESIGNED IN A 'V' SHAPE SO THAT THE RAIN WATER WILL FLOW INTO THE CENTRE AND COLLECTED BY THE GUTTER. THE GUTTER WILL TRANSFER THE WATER THROUGH PIPING SYSTEM DOWN TO THE UNDERGROUND THEN THE DRAIN. THIS IS DONE ALSO TO AVOID FLASH FLOODS DURING HEAVY RAIN BY NOT ALLOWING RAIN WATER FLOWS TO THE GROUND DIRECTLY AND ACCUMULATE.

EXPLANATION: WIND MOSTLY FLOWS FROM EAST SOUTH AND WEST NORTH. MORE OPENINGS ARE PROPOSED ON THESE AREAS OF THE FACADES. FRONT DOOR WILL ALWAYS STAY OPEN DURING THE DAY TO ALLOW MORE WIND TO ENTER. LARGE OPENINGS ON THE REAR TO CAPTURE MORE BREEZE FROM THE FOREST.

WEEK 7 QUALITY OF SPACE + SPACE PLANNING BRIEF:IN WEEK 5 DURING SITE VISIT, EACH STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE 10 PHOTOGRAPHS OF SITE THAT EVOKE THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS AND CONCEPTS. EACH PHOTOGRAPHS, A DESIGNATED KEYWORD REQUIRED TO EXPLAIN EACH PHOTOGRAPH. DISCUSS ABOUT THE QUALITY/SENSE OF THE PLACE SEEN IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS.

EXPLANATION:THERE ARE NO LINES TO SHOW THE PARKING ORDER, BUT THE CARS ARE ARRANGED IN ORDER.

EXPLANATION:THE STREET LIGHT AND THE PLANTATIONS IN THE CENTRE DIVIDES THE TWO-WAY ROAD INTO TWO.

EXPLANATION: THE SHOPLOTS WITH DIFFERENT APPEARANCES SEEMED TO BELONG TOGETHER.

EXPLANATION: GRAFFITI ARTS SHOW EXPRESSIONS OF YOUNGSTERS.

EXPLANATION: SMALL PLANTS ARE TIED AND PROTECTED BY FENCE SO THAT THEY CAN GROW WELL, BUT UNABLE TO REACH OUTISDE.

EXPLANATION: SITE IS NEAR A RESERVED FOREST OF BUKIT NANAS.

EXPLANATION:MODERN BUILDING STANDS OUT FROM THE FOREST

EXPLANATION:THE GLARE OF THE SUNLIGHT GRABS THE ATTENTION OF PEOPLE RATHER THAN THE OTHER ELEMENTS

EXPLANATION:THE PARKING AND THE SITE TOPOGRAPHY SHOWS THAT THE SITE HAS A LOT OF LAYERS.

EXPLANATION:DIFFERENT KIND OF BUILDINGS WITH DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS AND FORMS ARE PLACED TOGETHER

BRIEF:LOOKING AT THE DESIGN RESPONSE CUBES FROM WEEK 6, DECIDE WHAT AND HOW TO BUILD UPON THEM WITH QUALITY OF SPACE. USING BALSA WOOD, PRODUCE A RELIEF MODEL THAT SHOWCASES THE QUALITY OF SPACE. THE BASE NEEDS TO BE 15cmx15cm.

THE FORM OF THE MODEL IS EXTRACTED FROM THE DESIGN RESPONSE MODELS IN WEEK 6. THE IDEAS FROM 'SUNLIGHT', 'TOPOGRAPHY' AND 'RAIN' MODELS ARE COMBINED AND USED ON THE MODEL. THE ROOF OF THE MODEL CHANGES TO PREVENT THE RAINWATER TO FLOW DIRECTLY TO THE SOFT SOIL OF THE FOREST, CAUSING FLASHFLOODS.
