Adrienne Jones BY ROBERT HAYWOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY J. PHOTOGRAPHY

When we were considering distinguished Marylanders for our cover story, Adrienne A. Jones immediately came to mind. Building on strength and intelligence rather than bravado, Jones has broken through to the highest levels of government. In 2019, after many years of faithful and noteworthy service, doing her job well earned her the position of Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates by a unanimous vote. When we read in the Washington Post that Jones shies away from media attention, we were crestfallen. However, when she learned that we wanted to feature a leader who could lift us up during these truly challenging times, she agreed to an interview and allowed us to photograph her in the House chambers. The first African-American and first woman Speaker in Maryland in history, Jones has had a long career in public service. A member of the House of Delegates representing Baltimore County since 1997, she has served on well over thirty task forces, committees, and commissions, and has received many honors for her public service. We thank her for her leadership and look forward to the upcoming year. ANNAPOLIS HOME: During your childhood and early development, who inspired you the most and why? ADRIENNE JONES: If I were to choose one person who inspired me the most during my childhood and early development, it would be my late mother, Eula Mae Williams. I was her only daughter, growing up with four brothers. She wanted to make sure as a young girl growing into adulthood that I conducted myself properly. One of her most favorite sayings/words of advice was “Be yourself, or you will be by yourself,” meaning “Be authentic and don’t pretend to be something that you’re not”—words that I still abide by to this day. My mother also taught me the importance of obtaining a good education, doing for others through public service, and striving to be the best that I could be. I firmly believe it is due to my mother’s early support and inspiration that I hold the public service position I hold today as Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. AH: You are the first African-American and the first woman Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. From your perspective, why is diversity important yet so hard to achieve? AJ: Diversity is important because it offers a different perspective in dealing with the myriad issues that come before us in the Maryland House of Delegates. I would differ with you that diversity is so hard to achieve. As the 107th Speaker and first African-American and woman, I was pleased that our current members are more reflective of our State. This is, in part, thanks to organizations that assist and encourage women and persons of color to run for office. As a result, we have a record number of both women and persons of color in the Maryland House of Delegates.

AJ: The blueprint is a once-in-a-generation plan to revolutionize education in Maryland. It’s built on the principle that every child deserves the best education— regardless of zip code. Unfortunately, finding consensus on the price tag for that investment has been the problem. The blueprint is fully funded for the first 3-4 years. The biggest potential hurdle, therefore, would be funding in future years. However, I believe that eventually, there will be extraordinary returns on the financial investment we are making with the blueprint for Maryland’s future. AH: What has the Coronavirus pandemic taught you professionally and personally? AJ: Along with the Senate President, the COVID-19 Workgroup was established to focus on the delivery of critical services of state government during the crisis. We have worked collaboratively with Governor Hogan and his administration since the end of session in March. I have seen how, despite some of our differences, we have come together as a community to support one another. I am especially proud of the encouragement that has been shown to those on the front lines of this battle— doctors, nurses, paramedics, caregivers, firefighters, and police officers whose daily focus is keeping us safe, and providing help and support to those who are affected by this pandemic and to their families. Personally, I have adapted to communicating with my family through various social media venues and wearing a protective mask and gloves when I go to a public place. It also got me to be at home more than I have ever been before, and as a result, I have gotten some much-needed rest and some projects done around my house.

AH: You have a blueprint to make Maryland a better place, with a particular focus on investing in schools. What will be your biggest hurdle? 3

Greg Younger, owner of Younger Construction in Annapolis, grew up working with his father in the construction business. Over the years, Greg learned that he had both a gift for craftsmanship and a talent for understanding how to remodel a home to fit a client’s needs. Greg loved the satisfaction he felt when he completed a project and his clients were overjoyed with the results. To him, there was no better feeling. Greg still works every day to achieve the same results. Younger Construction is highly skilled in both residential construction and light commercial construction. The company specializes in custom homes, renovations, additions, and kitchens and bathrooms in Anne Arundel, Prince George’s and Queen Anne’s counties.   Before any work starts, Greg meets with potential clients to discuss their desires and vision. He listens to their expectations of the design, timeline and budget. Greg’s infectious energy helps clients overcome their fears and get excited about the project. After Greg gets to know the client’s needs, he helps them select a design they will be happy with in the long run. Even before the work 4

has begun, clients are amazed at the process. Greg and his detailoriented crew do not cut any corners. They pride themselves on being perfectionists and they understand the importance of clean lines. Above all, they strive to meet and exceed all client expectations. Greg checks in with his clients regularly to make sure they are happy with how the project is going. This personal touch engages clients and enables them to be part of the process. Instead of feeling like a chore, the project feels more like a fun hobby. Seeing the look of joy on a client’s face when a job is complete is what attracted Greg to the business decades ago. Today, it’s still his favorite part of the job.

Architecture D EV I N K I M M E L , A I A , A S L A Devin Kimmel, AIA, ASLA, is the head of a fast-growing architecture firm based in Annapolis, MD. Kimmel and his talented team have decades of experience planning, designing and renovating high-end custom homes, historical mansions, waterfront estates and horse farms. They also design memorials, academic campuses, sporting venues and restaurants. The main advantage that Kimmel has over other architects is that he was trained as a landscape architect as well as an architect. This combination of architecture and landscape results in a holistic approach to design, where nature is not an afterthought but an integral part of the process. His ability to artfully integrate buildings into their landscapes separates Kimmel from the rest. Also visible in Kimmel’s designs is his substantial knowledge of classical forms and architectural history. Knowing tradition, however, does not imply that he feels bound by it. Kimmel is an expert in traditional forms, and frequently designs traditional-style architecture, but he 12

also develops plans for award-winning modern buildings. He says that even when designing a modern home, it is history that helps him to decide when and where to bend or even break traditional rules. Kimmel feels that he has accomplished his mission not when he designs a house that fits perfectly within a specific style, but when the client looks at the design and says, “Yes, this is me.” To achieve this feeling of recognition, the architect actively listens to his clients and encourages them to become members of the design team. “It is their home, not mine. I am the pencil in my client’s hand so that they can feel that the house is just for them. It’s my job to give architectural form to their vision,” reasons Kimmel. That is why, Kimmel says, the designs of his firm are so varied: because their clients are so varied.

Windows GR E G KU N O W S KY Now more than ever, home construction and renovation projects start with windows. From large panes of plate glass to traditional mullions, windows set the tone of our homes. There is much more to windows than style alone; however, especially in the Chesapeake region. Windows must be beautiful, but they have a demanding, practical job to do as well. If you are building or renovating a home, you are in for some complex decision making—unless you are working with the right professionals. Since 1995, Architectural Window Supply in Annapolis has been the premier supplier for new construction, historical renovations or replacement projects in the National Capital Region. “We have had the pleasure of working with some of the finest architects and builders,” company owner Greg Kunowsky explains. “And our projects can be found in many of the most beautiful new and remodeled homes in the area.” Both architects and homeowners are encouraged to visit Greg and his team in their newly expanded showroom in Annapolis. It is filled

with high-quality options for every style and budget. McHale Landscape Design is a residential landscape architecture company and design-build firm dedicated to designing and constructing extraordinary residential gardens, pools, outdoor living areas, and home additions. Our office on West Street has been serving the Annapolis area for over fifteen years. McHale Landscape Design was founded in 1981 by brothers Kevin and Steve McHale. The brothers’ passion for the landscape industry began while mowing neighborhood lawns when they were just 12 years old. Their parents taught the value of hard work and financial accountability, and while still in college at West Virginia University, Kevin and Steve started the business. The early beginnings were simple: a pickup truck, a wheelbarrow, two shovels and a drafting board. Since 1981, the firm has designed, constructed, and planted residential projects, including more than 350 award-winning landscapes. Combining landscape architecture, horticulture knowledge, and field

experience, our professionally licensed and certified staff help you create beautiful gardens and living spaces. With an interactive designbuild process, McHale Landscape Design views every client as an important part of the team. Our goal is to be your Single Source for the entire project, from design to implementation to aftercare—and develop clients for life.

Yachting on the Chesapeake M A R K A N D R EW S In a Bay filled with boats and boat dealers, work for the best. That’s what Mark Andrews thought when he joined Annapolis Yacht Sales as President in 2019. Mark’s admiration of Annapolis Yacht Sales began over 20 years ago, when he would attend the annual Annapolis Boat Show as a yacht broker. Rob Taishoff and Chris Humphreys, new owners of Annapolis Yacht Sales, had big plans for the venerable Annapolis institution and realized Mark was just the person to execute their vision. They quickly offered him a partnership and the rest, as they say, is history! Since taking the helm, Mark has expanded sales and service while preserving all that makes Annapolis Yacht Sales one of the East Coast’s premier yacht brokerages. Mark and his team offer sales and service for sail and powerboats including Beneteau, Lagoon, Edgewater, Cruiser Yachts, Steiger, and Four Winns. They do it better than anyone else! They are eleven-time winners of Beneteau’s prestigious “Dealer of the Year” award, ten-time winners 20

of their “Service Dealer of the Year” award, and winner of the Beneteau’s highly coveted “Dealer of the Decade” award. The tradition of excellence that began in a corner of Fawcett’s Boat Supply on Compromise Street in 1953 continues under Mark’s steady leadership. Raised on the water in Marblehead, MA, Mark moved to the Chesapeake 20 years ago and has been working in marine services ever since. His experience, knowledge and love of yachting life make him the perfect person to continue Annapolis Yacht Sales tradition of excellence.

J E H A N N E Mc I N T Y R E E D WA R D S The State of Maryland allows homebuyers and mortgage refinance borrowers to choose their title company for real estate purchases and refinances because using an impartial and independent title company is essential to ensuring that all aspects of a real estate transaction are fair, legal and correct. In addition to investigating a property’s title history, drafting deeds and issuing title insurance, title companies hold funds in escrow on behalf of lenders, borrowers, buyers and sellers, prepare the documents and manage the closing details on settlement day. An attorney for more than 30 years, Jehanne, pronounced like “Jan,” has the experience and expertise to handle even the most complicated transaction. She and her staff work closely with buyers, sellers, real estate agents and lenders to make sure all the important details are dealt with before settlement. At closing, Jehanne explains, “I want each settlement to be smooth and understandable for our clients.” Jehanne is also “of counsel” with the venerable Buck Law Group, with whom Church Circle Title and Escrow shares office space. This 24

relationship allows her to offer additional legal services, including the preparation of deeds, contracts and addenda, easements, seller financing documents, powers of attorney and many other real property related documents. When she is not at work, Jehanne enjoys bike riding on the B&A Trail, going to the “Y” in Arnold and spending time in Rehoboth and the Adirondacks. Oh, and by the way, he wanted to do really good electrical work, too! What sets Chesapeake Electric apart is their core values. Every decision, from hiring and training, to communication and strategic planning goes back to the same simple axiom: does this serve the mission, vision and company values? Did we mention that he and his team do exceptional electrical work? They do! Chesapeake Electric has three divisions. The residential team services greater Annapolis in new construction and remodeling. From large

custom homes to simple lighting upgrades, Chesapeake Electric Residential does it all. The Commercial Team performs tenant buildouts from Annapolis to Northern Virginia. Projects range from small restaurants to high-end office remodels. The service team works directly with residential and commercial customers to keep electrical systems operating at peak performance. The most fulfilling part of Ryan’s career, thus far, has been watching his company and its employees grow over the past 6 years, personally and professionally. Each day he and his team get stronger together with grit, empathy and a strong sense of purpose.

Plastic Surgery E M I LY C L A R K E - P E A R S O N, M D What do relationships, rejuvenation procedures, and mind-body connection have in common? Everything, if you ask Dr. Emily Clarke-Pearson, founder of Charm City Plastic Surgery. In her artistic boutique-style suite, all are welcome, often greeted by name by her caring professional team. She listens to what each individual desires, and suggests what will help, preferring to build trust and take small steps rather than rush into something dramatic—a patient’s comfort level guides the process. “I have some patients that would never ever want surgery. Others who want their mommy makeover yesterday. Or I may see a patient whose kids just went to college and wants to spend some time on herself now.” “The most important thing,” says Dr. Clarke-Pearson, “is that there is no preconceived plan to urge patients into doing more than what they may be comfortable with. I take patients where they are at, rather than plugging them into a standard program.” Harvard-educated, trained at Johns Hopkins and in private practice for many years, the Board Certified Dr. Clarke-Pearson has a loyal following. “It’s not about fixing people but getting people to feel more 36

like themselves when they look in the mirror. It’s about living your best life.” “I think plastic surgery has got a bad rap,” she reflects. “People think it’s all skin deep, but it isn’t. I don’t think you have to be one way or another. If you’re feeling good about the way you look and how your body looks, it creates a positive feeling, happiness, a sense of wellbeing. That’s the mind-body connection. When you feel good about yourself, you treat others well too. “ With its recessed lighting and paintings and sculpture by Dr. ClarkePearson, the inspired treatment environment is infused with positive energy. Here is a space to rejuvenate mind, body and spirit and something rare—respite from a busy schedule and racing mind.

T H E B A N N E K E R - D O U G L A S S MU S EUM As the State of Maryland’s official museum of African American heritage, Banneker-Douglass Museum serves to document, to interpret, and to promote African American history and culture (particularly in Maryland) through exhibitions, programs and projects in order to improve the understanding and appreciation of America’s rich cultural diversity for all. With over 12,000 items in the collections database, and the Sylvia Gaither Garrison Library, the Banneker-Douglass Museum serves as an indispensable resource for anyone looking to research African American history in Maryland. This year marks the museum’s 35th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture, which governs the museum. In February of 2018, Governor Larry Hogan issued a proclamation establishing the commemorative year in observation of the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass whom the museum is named after and encouraged Marylanders to visit the museum as part of the administration’s effort to preserve African American history, culture and heritage. The permanent exhibit, “Deep Roots, Rising Waters” provides 38

an overview of African American history in Maryland from 1633 through present day. Come learn about Frederick Douglass, Benjamin Banneker, Harriett Tubman, Matthew Henson and see how African Americans throughout Maryland have made lasting changes for all Americans. Banneker-Douglass Museum is located in downtown, historic Annapolis at 84 Franklin Street. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, from 10 am-4 pm. 12 Months BEST DAY TRIPS FOR THE NEXT

BY CHRISTINE FILLAT

We have put together a list of memorable day trips you might like to take. The area in which we live is incredibly rich; in this guide, you will find all sorts of ideas for adventures to embark on. Some suggest places where you can easily practice social distancing. We hope the other sites will become more accessible as the year goes by. Just be sure to check with each location before you visit to verify if the venue is still open, the activity is still on schedule, and which amenities will be available. Some welcome centers will be closed and may not have restroom facilities. Best advice for day tripping is to be prepared—especially when public health is a determining factor. Pack a lunch and something to drink and be ready for whatever the adventure brings!

KENNEDY CENTER OPERA HOUSE

LONGWOOD GARDENS

February is Opera month at the Kennedy Center. Performances of Rigoletto, Così Fan Tutte, and Boris Godunov are all you need to transport you to another place and time. Just try not to look at the supertitles. Can you follow the action? Do you know what is going on? Does it matter? With all of the soaring vocalizations and orchestral movements, sometimes just sitting back and absorbing is all you need to do.

Spring in Longwood Gardens is a glorious time… but let’s face it, any time is glorious at Longwood! In May, the gardens are bursting with new growth, the bulbs are happening, the beer garden is open (with pizza!), and the choreographed fountain show with projections is ravishing.

TIME for Take-out!

Some of Our Favorites

BY CHRISTINE FILLAT These are unusual times. We are called upon to shelter in place and only go out when it is absolutely necessary. The face mask is as ubiquitous as shoes. But what to do when we are used to a modern café society, and growing weary after four weeks— or even four days—of our own food? That’s where the good restaurateurs of the Annapolis area come in. They are still providing us with delightful food; it just has to be consumed someplace other than in the restaurant. Some innovative combination of folding chairs for ersatz sidewalk dining comes to mind. Is there a law against that? Or some governmental directive? We have compiled a list of some of our favorite places that offer lovely food experiences and are open during the COVID-19

42

pandemic. Consult the establishment’s website and make your selections before you call. Every place has its own hours and specialties. They are there to serve you and perhaps help make social distancing a little less tedious. “Fine dining is mostly a place. You want to go out,” says Arturo Ottavio of Osteria 177, La Posta, and Arturo’s—which is difficult when we are not allowed to gather en masse. Having the option to pick up a meal curbside from a favorite restaurant during these times helps to get through the day, not to mention helping those places stay open. Annapolitans still patronize their favorite places. “So it’s good,” says Ottavio. “People really show up. This is a beautiful town.” We will get through this together.
