LAND6338 LANDSCAPE PLANNING ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT Assignment 1: Landscape Analysis

Ryan Aldrich Ryan Aldrich

The SITE: Mangere Gateway Heritage Area: Ihumatao, Mangere, Manukau City

Aim: “to develop an understanding of landscape assessment techniques that can assist spatial planning processes to inform future growth patterns that enable an appropriate conversion of natural and rural environments to urban activities. (provided brief)

cadastral boundaries + roads

Cadastral boundaries and roads have being overlaid onto an aerial photograph of the site. This displays that road density around buildings increases. Cadastral boundaries around buildings while those distant from buildings have larger areas. It also clearly displays the limited costal access.

Ryan Aldrich

airport extension

The airport extension has being over laid onto an aerial photograph of the site. The image shows the area of land the extension will use. This is a significant size relative to the other undeveloped land (farm and agricultural).

building types

There are to main types of buildings found on site. These can be categorised as commercial and residential. These buildings have being colour highlighted and overlaid along with cadastral boundaries and roads on to an aerial photograph of the site. Building type affects the needs for different types of surrounding land. For example park space may be desired around residential developments.

Ryan Aldrich

drainage

Drainage through soil has being mapped. The site above sea level is mostly sitting on good draining soil. However these are relatively much smaller areas of poor draining soil. This can strongly affect vegetation growth / type.

Ryan Aldrich

rock type

The different rock types found on site have being mapped and overlaid along with cadastral boundaries and roads onto an areal photograph of the site. The site features four dominant rock types.

Ryan Aldrich

elevation

The elevations or heights of land have being applied over an aerial photograph. This shows the site to hold a range of heights. Ranging from the peeks of volcanic forms to the harbour and rivers. There are some larger areas of constant land height however they are not dominant.

Ryan Aldrich

vegetation

Vegetation on site is consisting of four types. Estuary and costal plants, exotic plants, native plants, and agricultural planting. These have being mapped and overlaid onto an areal site photograph. Observation shows exotic and agricultural planting taking linear forms while others are more organic. Water on site is also clearly highlighted by the estuary and costal plants.

Ryan Aldrich

archaeological

The site is steep in history. Archaeological site are literally doted over the landscape. These include Maori and European sights of historical and cultural significance such as a pa site. The costal areas of the site hold the most archaeological finds or interests. Some destroyed sites were found beside the estuary water and the developed areas of the site.

Ryan Aldrich

slope

A map of slope on site has being laid on top of an areal photograph. The strong contrasting green (low slope) and red (high slope) lines trace along the waterways and the volcanic forms show in red showing steep topography.

Ryan Aldrich

hydrology

Hydrology on site has being broken down to three main water types. The sight is boarded by salt water. A dominant part of the sites landscape is the estuary water system with the streams feeding into it. This is where a majority of water catchments drain.

Ryan Aldrich

soil type

Soil types found on sight have being mapped and overlaid onto an areal photograph. The site has four dominant soil types. The land the airport extension will use is mostly one soil this contrasts the soil found in northwest of the sight also all one type.

Boundary

By overlaying the landscape elements of elevation, hydrology, soil type, airport extension a landscape character map was created. There is a pattern present in this map running diagonally thought the site. It is the division point between meeting soil and elevation planes also cutting just beyond the estuary system.

residential building

The landscape elements of airport extension, vegetation, building types, and hydrology have being overlaid to create this landscape character map. From this map a clear line can be drawn showing the connection of residential buildings. This runs along the purposed runway extension and the northeast towards the commercial area.

archaeological

The landscape elements of airport extension, vegetation, hydrology, and archaeological have being overlaid to create the landscape character map. This map clearly shows the large area of archaeological sites to the northwest. This clump can be divided into to using the vegetation element. The northeast segment has mainly exotic trees showing it has being more disturbed then the southwest segment of the group containing native and costal vegetation. There are also important sites along the south west cost.

Suggestion

The proposal for the site came by layering the landscape character maps and finding patterns within. The archaeological area to the northwest is split into two areas. The first is a recreation park containing historic features this was decided as the area already has exotic plants showing it has being disturbed. The historic reserve sits against to this park. Both lie beside a residential development zone. This lays on blank farmland along a costal access road. This provides direct car access to the waterfront. There is a second park to the west of the runway. This also preserves archaeological sites. The hydrology information informed the placement of re-vegetation. This will filter water from the residential development, the runway and the existing commercial area.
