A new series for children has been a huge success encouraging children and parent to share books and enjoy reading for pleasure. With a target audience of 3 - 6 year olds Bookaboo is a 13 part CITV series that ran from 2nd March to 3rd April with a central drum playing rock puppy character called Bookaboo, who is inspired by picture books, so much so says "I just can't play without a story a day!". In each 11 minute episode, one of bookaboo's celebrity fans goes back stage to the rock puppy's tour bus, the 'bookabus', to see if they can tempt him back to stage by sharing a picture book with him. The list of celebrities sharing a book with Bookaboo included American rock singer Meat Loaf, British actress Amanda Holden, footballer David Seaman, and former Spice Girl Mel C, comedians Al Murray and Julian Clary among others. THE BOOKABOO BOOKS The 13 featured books were chosen on the basis that they are fun to read out loud and both children and adults will find them entertaining. The Cow That Laid An Egg by Andy Cutbill and illustrated by Russel Ayto Splat the Cat by Rob Scotton More Pants by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Nick Sharratt Whatever by William Bee The Hairy Toe, illustrated by Daniel Postgate A Mummy For Owen by Marion Dane Bauer and illustrated by John Butler No Matter What by Debi Gliori Class Two at the Zoo by Julia Jarman and illustrated by Lynne Chapman The Lamb Who Came for Dinner by Steve Smallman and Joelle Dreidemy Pooh Is That You Bertie? by David Roberts That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell and Neal Layton The Night Pirates by Peter Harris and illustrated by Deborah Allwright Norma Snows by Paula Metcalf One key area that Bookaboo is keen to tackle is illustrating how fun reading is, especially to boys as research has shown boys find it harder to engage with reading. With an increasing number of parents lacking confidence in their own literacy skills and one in five children leaving primary school unable to read, Bookaboo's aim is to highlight the fun that can be had when an adult and a child share a book. Ricakro Books in Horbury is offering ÂŁ2.00 off purchases of the Bookaboo featured titles exclusive to Ossett Review Readers. Call into Rickaros for details: 17 High St, Horbury Tel: 01924 278811

Formed in response to customer requests for quality headboards, footstools and chairs to coordinate with their curtains bought from The Curtain Shop, Ossett Upholstery has gone from strength to strength, now employing three local people. Providing a service to the many people who want to own quality furniture that will last, tailor made to their own specifications. For re-upholstery of your existing furniture or newly commissioned bespoke furniture, you can be confident of the high quality workmanship and customer service associated with The Curtain Shop.

Martin Randall When Martin Randall joined Ossett Upholstery in 2005, David Aldred, the owner, knew that he’d found the perfect person for the fledgling business. Although Ossett Upholstery was a newly formed company, Martin’s 40 years of experience and expertise was, and still is, invaluable and ensures a standard of workmanship and service seldom found these days. Apprentice trained, Martin learnt his craft at WT Nettletons, working on both traditional and contemporary pieces of furniture.

Lucy Hinch Lucy has recently been awarded the prestigious award of Apprentice of the Year by the North Lancs Training Group for her work with Ossett Upholstery. She started her apprenticeship over two years ago after deciding her ‘A’ level course at Ossett Sixth Form wasn’t for her and feels she’s really found her niche in the male dominated world of upholstery.

Masi Kholwadia Masi joined Ossett Upholstery in July 2008, having worked as an upholsterer in Batley for over five years. Having been trained and qualified in traditional upholstery, Masi prefers the original method of upholstery to modern techniques, which sits very well with the ethos of Ossett Upholstery, where a high quality of workmanship and materials used ensures fine quality furniture.

food&drink Easter means one thing in our household - chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! Here are a couple of our favourite chocolate recipes that have stood the test of time and are always great for giving as gifts.

Rum Truffles 7floz (200ml) Double Cream 1oz (25g) Butter 1lb (450g) Plain Chocolate 2tbsp (30ml) Rum or Brandy

8oz (225g) Butter 6oz (175g) Light muscovado sugar 8oz (225g) Porridge oats 1oz (25g) Cocoa powder 8oz (225g) Plain dark chocolate

In a heavy based saucepan, heat cream & butter until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate. When the chocolate has melted, add the alcohol. Pour chocolate mixture into a flat tin lines with greaseproof paper and leave in fridge for several hours until firm. When set, pull off small pieces and roll into balls (chill again if the mixture becomes difficult to work with) Roll the truffles in one of the coatings or dip into melted chocolate and leave in fridge to harden Store for up to 2 weeks in the fridge Makes 50 truffles

Chocolate actually contains many substances that are good for you. Flavonols - have antioxidising properties which help prevent tissue damage and cardiovascular problems. Vitamin E, beta-carotene & copper - also antioxidants. Potassium - reduces blood pressure. Cholesterol-reducing hypocholesterolemiant fats - dark chocolate is particularly high in these.

Stir well to combine evenly. Pour mixture into the tin and bake in oven for 10-15 mins, until bubbling. Allow the mixture to cool in the tin. Melt the dark chocolate and pour it over the top of the cooled oatcakes. Leave in a cool place until chocolate is set, then cut into squares. N.B. Chocolate can separate from oatcakes when cut. You can cut oatcakes into squares before pouring on chocolate and letting chocolate dribble down sides of squares to give it better purchase.

In Case of Emergency, who do you contact? Eight out of ten people aren’t carrying information that would help if they were involved in an accident. Storing next-of-kin details in your mobile phone can assist the emergency services if you’re unable to tell them who to contact.

How does it work? Simply use your mobile’s phone book to store the name and number of someone who should be contacted if you have an emergency – but add the letters ICE in front of their name. ICE stands for ‘In Case of Emergency’: it’s what the emergency services will look for if you’re involved in an accident and have your mobile phone with you. This straightforward idea was developed by the East Anglian Ambulance Trust.

Getting started On most mobile phones you simply need to select ‘Contacts’ and choose ‘Add New Contact’, then enter the letters ‘ICE’ next to the name, followed by the telephone number of your next of kin. Make sure you choose a number that’s easy to get in touch with – a home number could be useless in an emergency if the person works full time. We recommend that you enter daytime and evening numbers where this is possible.

What should I do next? Make sure the person whose name and number you are giving has agreed to be your ‘ICE partner’. You should also make sure your ICE partner has a list of people to contact on your behalf, such as your place of work. In addition, they’ll need to know about any medical conditions that could affect your emergency treatment, including allergies or medication.

If you’re under 18, your ICE partner should be your mother, your father or an immediate member of your family authorised to make decisions on your behalf. Friends and other relatives won’t be able to make decisions for you if you’re admitted to hospital. If you store multiple contacts and numbers, store them as ICE-1, ICE-2, ICE-3 etc in order of priority. Storing an ICE number makes it easier for everyone if you’re involved in an accident. It only takes a few seconds, so do it today please.

health & wellbeing Healthy Hearts at Work Millions of employees across the country are putting their health at risk, just by sitting at their desk. The use of computers and email have drastically reduced the amount of time office workers spend away from their desk. Some workers even stay glued to their chair throughout lunchtime. Physical inactivity is linked with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer and recent figures show that this is costing the NHS over £1 billion. Many of find it difficult to fit in regular exercise, but we could be missing great opportunities to increase our levels of activity whilst at work. Just a 10% increase in activity levels can make a huge difference, here’s how it can be done: Do the twist - Don’t just sit there, twist your body from side to side, make sure you are sitting in a comfortable position with you back straight and your feet flat on the floor and twist slightly in your chair from side to side Stretch your legs - Make a point of getting up and walking across the office to talk to colleagues instead of emailing. You could even hold a weekly ‘No Email’ day In flight entertainment - Remember the feet and leg exercises you are asked to do on aeroplane, these are excellent for maintaining circulation in the lower body Step out - Organise a daily ‘corporate walk, a brisk 20 minute walk every lunchtime will help to keep your heart healthy Use the stairs - Stairs are an excellent work out, even when climbed slowly they offer a fantastic way of improving fitness and making your heart muscle stronger. If you’re on the ground floor you can go up the stairs and back down, whenever you feel like stretching your legs Snack attack - If you get the munchies at work avoid high fat, salty or sugary snacks. Instead go for fruit or chopped crunchy vegetables, such as carrots, celery or peppers. Go nuts - Nuts and seeds are great to snack on and are a good source of essential omegas 3 fatty acids. But remember they are high in calories and you only need a palmful every day so it’s a good idea to measure them out and pop them in a small dish on your desk. Keep your heart healthy, don’t just sit there, seek out opportunities to get moving, choose healthy snacks and keep your heart healthy.

Hit Your Peak for Heart Research UK Yorkshire’s own national heart charity, Heart Research UK, is urging keen walkers to get their boots on and sign up for their flagship fundraiser, the ‘Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge’ on Saturday 20 June. This 25mile walk, not only provides spectacular scenery and gets the heart pumping, it helps raise funds for pioneering research into the prevention, treatment and cure of Britain’s biggest killer, heart disease. Now in its thirteenth year, the challenge covers three of the highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. The charity needs as many dedicated, physically fit people as possible to do one, two, or even three peaks to help it continue the fight against heart disease. Denise Armstrong, Lifestyle Manager for Heart Research UK says: “Walking regularly is great exercise to keep your heart healthy. It helps tone your muscles, improves circulation and can make you feel happier and more relaxed. Taking part in an established event like this is a fantastic way to raise money and find the motivation to get into an exercise routine and stick to it.” Unlike many other organisations, Heart Research UK does not charge an entry fee, it simply asks all walkers to raise as much sponsorship money as possible. Often participants fundraise in memory of a loved one or in support of someone who is living with heart disease. Walkers can choose to face the challenge alone, with friends and family, or with colleagues from work, as part of a team building day. For further information or to enter the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, contact Heart Research UK on 0113 234 7474 or visit our website

Making Music Magical

Wakefield West Riding Operatic Society The members of Wakefield West Riding Operatic Society are busy rehearsing for Lional Bart’s ‘Oliver’, which will show at the Theatre Royal, Wakefield Tuesday, 12th May until Saturday 16th May. Rehearsals are taking place at Outwood, Wakefield and Flushdyke School, Ossett among a cast including adults and children from all the surrounding areas Ossett, Horbury, Batley, Doncaster, Selby and even Rotherham. The tickets are now on sale at the theatre and can also be purchased on line and over the telephone.

In a Victorian West Midlands charity workhouse, orphan boys march towards their places at the dinner tables. They dream about the meal they are looking forward to. But although they anticipate the pleasures of hot sausage and mustard, cold jelly and custard, in fact all they ever get is gruel. After eating their miserable daily ration, one boy called Oliver dares to ask Mr Bumble, who runs the workhouse with Widow Corney, ‘Please sir, I want some more’. Mr Bumble is enraged and Oliver tries to run away. When he is caught, Mr Bumble takes him into the cold snowy streets to be sold for the price of a mere seven guineas. He is bought by Mr Sowerberry, an undertaker, and is ill-treated by him and bullied by their older hired hand, Noah Claypole. Oliver is very miserable and daydreams of the mother he never knew. When he is teased about his feelings, he hits out and is put into a coffin as punishment, but he escapes and runs out into the streets and after days and days of walking, finds himself in the streets of London. Join the cast of Oliver to see where this timeless tale of the little orphan boy leads. With fantastic songs such as Food Glorious Food and As Long as He Needs Me, this is a night not to be missed and provides entertainment for all the family.

Running for Paulsworld Crigglestone man Colin Ward is in training to take part in the London Marathon on the 26th April, raising money for the local Paulsworld charity. Colin and his wife Sue were good friends with Paul Curtis and his partner Julie for many years before Paul was diagnosed and subsequently lost his battle with Motor Neurone Disease. Both Colin and Sue are involved with Paulsworld, the charity Paul set up in frustration after not being able to get the much needed mobility equipment fast enough to ensure the best possible quality of life for as long as possible. Paulsworld fundraises to buy mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs and a specially adapted van so that sufferes with MND can remain mobile as long as possible and get out and about. It was one of Paul’s frustrations that there was so much red tape and delay, that if applied for a piece of equipment to help keep him mobile, by the time the equipment arrived with him, the disease had progressed to such an extent it rendered the piece of equipment useless to him.
