New Cadets Join North Walsham Squadron

2110 (North Walsham) Squadron enrolled five new cadets into the Air Training Corps last month.

Imogen Ritchie (14), Elouise Way (12), Dylan Rayner (13), Harvey Bailey (13), and Tyler Cook(13), were formally enrolled by the Squadron Padre, Rev Paul Cubitt and the Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant Alan Stevens in a ceremony at the Squadron Headquarters at North Walsham Primary School.

For anyone interested North Walsham Air Cadets parade every Monday and Thursday, at Squadron Headquarters, North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm til 9.30pm. All of the cadets have already achieved their Heartstart first aid qualification and are looking forward to several years in the cadets, flying, gliding shooting, visiting RAF camps and much more as well as achieving many other useful qualifications including perhaps BTECs and Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Happy 100th Birthday Patsy!

Patsy Couper celebrated her 100th Birthday at Kevlin House on Sunday 2nd April 2017.

Patsy has lived at Kevlin House for almost 7 years.

Her family celebrated the day with her and enjoyed an old fashioned English cream tea, Bucks Fizz and of course a celebratory cake!

Patsy was born on 2nd April 1917 to William and Mary Earl. She has a younger brother called Dennis and the family lived in Plumstead London.

Patsy married her husband George during the war. They had three children Frances, Andrew and Margaret. She was a housewife after the war and also worked as a secretary at Millfield School.

Patsy also has 7 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren.

From Cumbria to Cromer, goat herd size to double

North Norfolk District Council’s famous Bagot goat herd moves back into town and will double in size later in the year.

A herd of eight Bagot goats have been moved back into their spring and summer residence on Cromer’s cliff.

The goats have been clearing land in recent months at Happy Valley.

Their move back into the heart of Cromer was made today thanks to NNDC officers.

The Bagot billies, which have appeared on television and in newspapers, will be joined by another eight Bagots from Cumbria sometime in May. In order to make adequate space for the expanded herd, the size of their enclosure will be more than doubled when new fencing is installed to the west of the current enclosure.

The enclosure currently stops at the white steps above the promenade, but will be extended to the zig zag steps. Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “Last year the goats were very popular with visitors, but also did a fabulous job at managing the habitat.

“It is excellent news that there will be an addition to the herd later in the year, which means an extra attraction for our visitors but also an extended area which will be naturally managed by these brilliant undergrowth clearing machines.”

In the past the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than grass and therefore last year kept plant growth over the area under control.

The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are very hardy and easy to tame.

Be Your Own Boss, Start Right in Business Workshop in North Norfolk

Starting a small business or deciding to go self-employed can be a daunting prospect, especially if someone has been in employment for a long time or has recently become unemployed.

On Wednesday 26 April a free workshop ‘Be Your Own Boss. Business Start Right’ will be held at North Walsham Library. The session has been designed to provide ideas about how to attract customers, start-up information and inspiration to anyone considering working for themselves.

The three hour event is being run by Genix Norfolk’s business support organisation in association with the Business and IP Centre Norfolk.

Paston Students Embrace Multi-Platform Technologies First year Creative and Media BTEC students at Paston Sixth Form College have embraced multi-platform technologies to generate a range of innovative and exciting media campaigns for their coursework.

North Walsham & District Historical Society Railway Nostalgia by Arthur Barret

Arthur gave his talk mostly with the aid of videos and DVDs.

He started with an introduction of music ‘The Coronation Scott’, best known as the signature tune of the radio series ‘Paul Temple’. This was followed by a video of the West Highland Lines’ Jacobite Line which runs from Fort William to Mallaig. Then came ‘Mallard’ on its run from Settle to Carlisle, crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct - she is now the centrepiece of the National Railway Museum at York. This was followed by the ‘Flying Scottsman’ leaving Scarborough. The 1920s song ‘This is the Way The Puff Puff Goes’ was a change of tone, which continued with Sir John Betjeman giving a commentary on the journey on the Kings Lynn to Hunstanton Light Railway.

The Mid Norfolk Railway from Swaffam to Melton Constable is a restored line and was featured in ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ when Peter Sallis, Clegg and Co, were enveloped in thick smoke and came out all soot smudged.

‘Dad’s Army’ were not left out - the episode shown only recently, where the platoon marched off a station platform led by Captain Mainwaring got lost and found themselves marching back onto the platform.

Hedgehog Awareness Week

Hedgehog Awareness week starts on Sunday 30 April and to help promote this Hedgehog Haven (North Norfolk) will be in attendance at Hadfields Garden Centre between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 29, Sunday 30 April, and Monday 1 May with information leaflets and advice.

The aim of the Big Sit is to record as many species as possible from a chosen 17-feet diameter circle in a 24 hour period, though realistically most sites are up and running between dawn and dusk. The Club will be operating from a series of public sites across the Club area, including Felbrigg Park, so come along and share in the fun. Anyone can participate - even create your own circle in your garden as several members did last year. At the 2015 events, 115 species were recorded in total across all seven sites! From doing the Big Sit we hope to gain valuable data about visible migration and the birds in our area. Results will be collated and published in the NENBC newsletter, The Pied Flyer. NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST

The Trust held its latest Film Evening in the Atrium, North Walsham on Thursday 30 March. There were maps, finds and other items of interest available to view in the main reception/refreshment area and Trust officers to answer the many enquiries.

The show commenced with an introduction by the Vice Chairman, Chris Black, who thanked the many people for attending.

There were not many seats vacant in the auditorium when the first film rolled “Restoring the North Walsham and Dilham”, made and edited by John Parker of Big Sky Productions.

With a delightful commentary by Thordis Fridriksson, it depicted very many of the sites along the canal, which have been greatly improved, both visually and for the very apparent benefit of wildlife, through the work of the Trust and two of the four canal owners.

Some of the shots were taken from an aerial camera, putting a whole, and very interesting, new dimension to the canal corridor. Once started, it seemed the 45 minute roll was over far too quickly, due to the superb photography, delightful commentary and the fascinating subject matter.

During the interval, delicious cakes, many homemade, were served by Mary Black and helpers with a choice of beverages for a very modest fee. The result of the work of our very own Raffle Queen Gisela was a handsome

David explained that not all the work was carried out alongside the canal, but behind the scenes, for example secretarial work. He asked if there were any volunteers present who would like to take on the post of secretary or a minute’s secretary, as both are needed.

Water, water everywhere… so how do plants respire?

All living cells respire, it allows them to grow and multiply, as well as actively function. Plants must respire to stay alive.

Aerobic respiration is the process by which glucose and oxygen are converted into water, carbon dioxide and energy. This is the most efficient method that plants can obtain energy. It is seen as the opposite reaction to photosynthesis, in which carbon dioxide, water and sunlight are converted into oxygen and glucose.

Plants use the oxygen produced in photosynthesis for their own respiration, and, thankfully for us, release excess oxygen into the atmosphere.

When no oxygen is present, anaerobic respiration takes place, and fewer ‘energy’ molecules are created. A by-product of this is ethanol, which in high quantities will kill the cells, and oxygen must be used to remove it again.

Usually, when we anaerobically respire we get a build-up of lactic acid that causes a stitch, but if you think that’s bad then spare a thought for poor plants that can have entire sections pickle to death.

In terrestrial plants, oxygen from the air moves into the leaves through tiny air-holes called stomata. Their roots use the small quantities of oxygen in the soil to respire, which becomes impossible for them in waterlogged conditions.

They will anaerobically respire for a short period of time, but need the soil to aerate again to recover.

plants, using modified terrestrial features to withstand emerged, submerged, or floating conditions.

These are known as hydrophytes or macrophytes.

So, if terrestrial plants can’t live on anaerobic respiration long-term, why don’t aquatic plants die?

• Some hydrophytes have adapted to survive prolonged periods of anaerobic respiration and can cope with the usually toxic ethyl alcohols. This isn’t, however, an indefinite strategy.

• Submerged leaves have modified to obtain oxygen and carbon dioxide from water rather than air. The absence of a waxy coating lets dissolved gases and solids move in and out of the leaves. The surface area is increased by having either long, extremely thin leaves with smooth edges or leaves that are split into lots of small leaflets, so that they can get as much oxygen as possible.

• Aerenchyma is a soft plant tissue containing air spaces that extends throughout the plant to bring oxygen to any submerged material. It also allows the plant a back-up supply of oxygen if required; for example, at night time when plants cannot photosynthesise and produce their own oxygen and the dissolved oxygen levels in the water get used up.

• Plants may create a film of air around roots and leaves to improve gas exchange.

There are also plant adaptations that expose part of their structure above the surface of the water and aerenchyma is then used to transport oxygen to the rest of the plant. This could be in the form of water repelling leaves, roots that grow straight up out of the water like a snorkel, or porous bark that can take in more air. Some plants have such large air pockets that they become completely buoyant, giving them access to air as they float on the surface of the water.

But why do any of us gardeners need to know this?

I read a piece of advice the other day, stating that to prevent houseplants from dying you mustn’t over or under water, but keep the plant consistently moist. Don’t succumb to believing plants should all be treated the same! In fact, the biggest killer of plants in nurseries is incorrect watering, and that’s a professional environment, so don’t beat yourself up if you do kill your plants with too much (or, even I admit, too little) love.

Start with just one house plant and make sure you have a botanical name for it. Ask at your local garden centre or look online for advice pages on its cultivation requirements and stick to those – you are trying to mimic its natural habitat and a generic watering schedule for all houseplants is unlikely to do them much good. Cacti can be raised as houseplants, but require very little water, whereas a Venus flytrap is a bog plant and will happily sit in a tray of rain-water. You may even find researching your plant fascinating, so beware the hidden danger that it may be a gateway interest into full blown botany!

MAYTIME MEDLEY Art Exhibition

The very pretty St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market will once again be hosting an art exhibition Friday 28 April to Bank Holiday Monday 1 May (open daily 11am until 4pm) by local artist Rosalie Osborne Gibb, featuring a diverse range of subjects, depicting her love of the coast and countryside, from exquisitely detailed watercolours to bold and colourful acrylics and soft pastels.

Local artist offered wonderful opportunity

A local artist based in Walcott, on the Norfolk coast, has become one of the few artists in the UK to design a cover for British Airways ‘First’ magazine.

Amelia Mills is a former student of Paston College and was commissioned to create a unique artwork for the ‘Water’ themed edition of the quarterly in-flight magazine for first class passengers, after being discovered through Instagram – where she regularly highlights her cutting edge artworks in acrylic and resin.

Amelia has been honing her craft over the last decade, and when she was contacted by an award-winning Art Director to ask if she would produce the cover for the prestigious magazine, she happily accepted.

“It has been an exciting opportunity to work with a high profile corporation like British Airways,� said Amelia, “it’s wonderful that social media offers people the chance to have their work discovered.�

Although her art is usually inspired by the natural landscapes and coastal features of her home in Norfolk, Amelia drew inspiration for the piece from the mineral-rich glacial waters seen during her recent travels in New Zealand. Despite having only two weeks to design and complete the artwork, the result was a beautiful painting that captures the flowing movement of water, which will hang in the first class Concorde Club Lounge at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 until the end of June.

The magazine was distributed in BA aircraft on 1 April, and has a potential readership of 100,000 passengers during the issue’s three-month period.

North Norfolk artists get set to invite the public into their studios

Hundreds of artists across the region are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios.

The event, firmly established as one of the biggest open studios schemes in the country, is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios (27 May – 11 June) provides the opportunity for artists to show and sell their work to a large and diverse audience. It also encourages everyone, from ardent art-lovers to the curious first-time visitor, to get out and about, see art and meet artists in the informal surroundings of their studios.

More than 500 artists will be taking part this year across 254 venues throughout Norfolk and in North Norfolk 149 artists will be taking part across 83 venues.

There have been possible sightings of Daisy in the Queensway and also Kingsway areas so we are still hopeful that she will be returned to the fold. Please keep looking if you live in these areas and advise of any sightings.

In the last article we mentioned that kittens are often fathered by relatives of the mother cat. Many people are also not aware that kittens in the same litter may have different fathers. I was reminded of this when I received a photo from Margaret of the little kitten we re-homed with her 11 years ago. Billy came into care with his black and white mother, 2 black and white kittens (one of each sex), plus a little black girl. They were found in an isolated barn and despite enquiries, no owner could be found. Looking at Billy it is obvious that his father was probably a pedigree cat, while his litter-mates were fathered by moggies.

As an example, ginger and tortie kittens may have the same father but tabbies, black, grey or white, in the same litter, probably do not.

We were recently sad to learn that Margaret Cootes, who was one of our fosterers for several years, had died after a long illness. We originally came to Grooming Parlour know Margaret well when delivering a kitten to her from our Full Grooming & Dereham Branch.

Hawk the Dog

We get to see some very interesting cases in a vets practice and our case this month is one such dog.

Hawk is a 7 year old male Deerhound, who had started showing signs of difficulty urinating. A urine sample identified that he was forming a type of crystal known as Cystine in his urine and x-rays showed these crystals had aggregated to form some large stones or uroliths. Unfortunately for Hawk, a number of the stones had left the bladder and become lodged in his urethra causing a great deal of discomfort when urinating.

By the time this happens the only solution is surgery to remove the stones due the risk of his bladder becoming blocked completely. Hawk was placed on an intravenous drip and a catheter was placed into his urethra to enable us to use saline to push the stones back up into his bladder where they could be retrieved. Fortunately, this was possible as, in cases where the urethral stones cannot be moved, surgery has to be performed at the level of the urethra as well as the bladder, which increases the risk of complications.

We took further x-rays to ensure all the uroliths had been pushed into the bladder and then took Hawk to surgery. Once in theatre, Hawk had abdominal surgery to give us access to the bladder, which itself was

someone to foster some motherless kittens and Margaret volunteered to take on this role. This was just the start, as many kittens then entered her home to receive lots of love and care (plus socialising with her little dog) before leaving for new homes. Not all did leave however, as Margaret and husband Ray, fell in love with two little black kittens we called Holly and Berry, plus dear little Darcy, who arrived when Billy whose only 3 days old. New owners were always litter-mates were made very welcome and some became good black and white friends. Margaret reluctantly had to retire from her role when her she started to have health problems. As well as the care the kittens received in her home we were also very grateful for the generous donation of bedding plants we received from her and Ray for our Plants Sales. These beautiful plants, easily recognised as being theirs, were soon sold.

Repeat x-rays confirmed all the stones had been removed and Hawk was woken up and literally watched carefully to ensure he was not showing signs of blocking again.

The calculi were sent to a laboratory in America and confirmed as Cystine uroliths, a type of stone that Deerhounds are predisposed to developing. He has been successfully managed with a special diet and measures to increase his water intake and has had no problems since.

Girlguiding Norfolk Archive Resource Centre (ARC)

Girlguiding Norfolk is very proud of its new Archive Resource Centre (ARC), built in the grounds of Patteson Lodge, across the road from Hautbois House at Coltishall.

It was purpose built, so that our many archives and collections could be taken from lofts, garages and attics, and housed somewhere appropriate where they could be properly looked after and made accessible to as many people as possible. They are being kept in rooms at an appropriate temperature and monitored for bugs and beasties! Our recent conservation report was very positive. A working group meets weekly and is compiling an inventory of what we have; to date we have found some wonderful treasures!

You cannot be serious – But that’s Family Law!

by Neale Grearson Family Law Solicitor Clapham & Collinge Solicitors As was widely reported in the national media the Court of Appeal gave its decision on the appeal of Tini Owens against the decision not to allow her to have a divorce based on her husband’s unreasonable behaviour.

Despite huge criticism by the Court of Appeal and in particular the President of the Family Division Sir James Munby the Court of Appeal went along with the original Court decision that Mrs Owens should not be able to have a divorce. This was the case where the original Judge effectively thought that the allegations of unreasonable behaviour made by Mrs Owens were normal for marriage and she should just effectively put up with it. Sir James Munby made specific reference to the manipulation that often goes on to achieve a divorce based on unreasonable behaviour with parties exaggerating or on occasions even giving incorrect information so as to get a divorce. However the Court of Appeal would not go so far as to overrule the original Family Court’s decision because effectively that is the law!

We are left with a very out of date process for a divorce that is based on only one ground which is the irretrievable breakdown of a marriage. However to show that breakdown this can only be done in one of five ways. For an immediate divorce that can only be based on adultery or unreasonable behaviour and that is where the dilemma lies. A husband or wife needs to “blame” the other to obtain a divorce and to raise very often what can be very emotive issues about behaviour. What is sufficient to be classed as unreasonable behaviour to allow a divorce is much more difficult to define. Over the years best practice has always been not to say all that could be said so as to avoid making a difficult situation even worse. The Court of Appeal has now effectively said that must end and there is a scary prospect of much more intensive detail being given about unreasonable behaviour to avoid the risk of the Family Court refusing to allow a divorce to take place.

The Government has indicated that it has no plans to introduce no fault divorce. We are therefore left with the current fiasco of no one really knowing what is sufficient to be classed as unreasonable behaviour to give good reason for a divorce. In very extreme situations it will be obvious but in more borderline ones are we now faced with a situation where people are going to exaggerate details of their relationship and try even harder to blame the other. Is that not going to be even more of a manipulation of the law?

And yet recently it has been reported in the press that the Ipswich Family Court allowed a divorce based on a row over Marmite!

But is this what husbands and wives want? Whilst the case of Mr and Mrs Owens is an extreme one the vast majority of divorces do not currently result in the divorce itself being defended. Whilst it is very rare for there to be an agreement on a divorce the reality is that one party very often has to acknowledge that because the other wants a divorce it is going to happen.

Pragmatic positions have to be taken because little is often served in a very expensive “fight” over whether there should be a divorce at all as only the lawyers realistically benefit from very large legal costs.

So what is the solution? No fault divorce remains on the agenda of Resolution and is a high priority. It works successfully in other countries where the emphasis is on dealing with financial repercussions and arrangements for children – not the actual divorce itself. If a marriage is over should the Court stand in the way of a couple wanting a divorce? Whilst there are those that would say that at the moment it is too easy to get a divorce by way of the manipulation that Sir James Munby refers to in reality is there any good reason to keep a couple married if one of them does not want to be in that

“Not just existing but actually living a life” is how Richard Snow explains how volunteering as a befriender has made an impact on the clients he has visited. He initially decided to volunteer to give some purpose to his life following retirement and found it a great way to meet new people and have new experiences.

He has found the experience to be very fulfilling after being matched with clients with similar interests to his own and is encouraging people to give to come forward to volunteer.

Richard volunteers for the North Norfolk Health Volunteers scheme, a befriending service run in partnership with North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which links volunteers with people who are 22

experiencing long term health conditions which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in their local community.

The most popular activity is a simple coffee and chat, but, depending on what volunteers wish to offer, it could involve a short walk, a game or craft activity or even a short trip out in the car.

The Heritage Centre in Aylsham has had a really successful first couple of weeks of the open season with lots of visitors enjoying our new ‘History of St Michael’s’ exhibition.

It has been really lovely to see so many people finding out more about such an iconic building in the town. The exhibition has grown from a project last year when Aylsham Heritage Centre and Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse worked together to research Aylsham Union Workhouse. This produced a series of banners, which were on exhibition in the library and at Blickling last year. However, so much information was uncovered that a full-scale exhibition was possible.

buildings for troops in WW1, through to the development of the Cottage Hospital in the 1950s through to a centre of excellence for rheumatology where many pioneering operations for joint replacements took place.

The final board explores the closure of the hospital and the development of new housing.

It is easy for anyone to take part … whether at work, home, school or with a social group.

The Hospice has produced a Bake a Difference fundraising pack full of information, ideas and materials to help inspire you. There are lots of options you could choose to hold a bake sale, coffee morning, tea party or bake off competition, Members of the Hospice fundraising it’s entirely up to you. The team are encouraging the public to pack even includes a cake #BakeADifference game, bunting, cake labels and poster & invitation templates – so you can get started straight away!

Organisers will be able to ask the Hospice Fundraising Team for any help or guidance needed along the way. Extra resources are available to download online and the team can also arrange for further materials such as t-shirts, collection buckets and balloons to help make your event bigger and better!

Lyndsay Carter, Chief Executive at The Norfolk Hospice said “Bake a Difference is all about getting our local community baking to help raise funds for the hospice. As a local charity, we need to raise over £2 million every year to continue to provide specialist care and support for free to people living with life-shortening illnesses. From bake sales with friends to cake eating competitions at work – there are numerous ways you can take part and support Bake a Difference.”
