ABOUT

I, Ruth Mitchener (nee. Sumner) employ a multidisciplinary approach to any given situation, and thus have many fingers in many pies. I grew up in Aotearoa, New Zealand with a paintbrush in hand. I studied Fine Arts in a decommissioned Monk Monastery, filled countless sketchbooks on a 9 month sabbatical in Europe, I started my own designer cushion business, manufactured medicines at Weleda, then I completed a degree in Industrial Design at Victoria University of Wellington with first class honours. Then I won silver at the best awards 2012, and a gold medal in the academic olympics, aka: the Victoria University Medal for Academic Excellence. phewf! I am an enthusiastic designer and creator, focusing on strategic design narratives, illustrated by a fine blend of science, art and passion.

TAKEAWAY PLAY

C

hildren aren’t always the most obliging travel, cafe or shopping companions. Actually children aren’t always that obliging in general. It is part of the job description. But as adults we can make the big overwhelming world a little more child-friendly by preparing for the worst case scenario, because let’s face it, a colouring in sheet and some scummy crayons aren’t always that enticing to a kid. All takeaway play involves some investment of time. But once you have a little kit of goodies you can throw one in your handbag on your way out the door.

MINIATURE PICNIC SET UP TIME Mid CLEAN UP TIME Mid MESS FACTOR Mid

Ingredients A small picnic blanket Lids, eggcups and other small containers A selection of foods, all small Some interesting ‘company’ to share the picnic with

Method hile you prepare the lunch selection on the mini dishes or lids, ask the kids to prepare the guests for a fine tea party. Get those teddies and dolls in their high tea finest. Together you can set the scene with blankets and pillows. Welcome your guests to their big lunch date and enjoy a snack in the sunshine with some scintillating conversation. Special doesn’t always have to be cake and candy. Sometimes toast cut into heart shapes using cookies cutters and a cup of cool chamomile tea is all it takes to make an average afternoon really special - just because you can.

Indoor alternative: Make an indoor picnic on the floor in the lounge. Use sheets and the couch to build a fort and pretend you’re camping.

ESTILL is a domestic steam distillation system that offers the culinary explorer an entirely new approach to harnessing flavour by extracting a plant’s essence to preserve for future season dishes and share in the exciting molecular gastronomy adventure. The process of distillation is further enhanced by the well-balanced functionality and language of form. The individually unique objects in the DeStill system all share a connected story and fuse together as a cohesive operational distillation system inspired equally by chemistry lab equipment and the biological functions of digestion. The system is composed of an evaporator and a condenser made of borosilicate (pyrex) glass, a stillhead made from ceramic porcelain that holds a 2L volume of plant matter, and a motorised temperature control plate that processes the whole organism using the reverse actions of condensation and evaporation from a refrigeration system to remove and relocate heat.

DeStill won Silver at the BEST awards 2012, and the 2011 Methven Award for Innovation & Excellence in Industrial Design.
