2/7 AMCP/AZO 4th Annual 01/22/2013- The CDC has claimed that the influenza vaccinations have reduced the risk of contracting the illness by about 60%. Despite having over 128 million doses of vaccinations distributed across various regions of the country several areas such as New York City continue to report high levels of flu like illness. The CDC recommends patients continue to take antiviral medication regardless of whether they have taken their vaccinations or not. The more frequent instances of flu outbreaks despite vaccinations stress the importance of developing a more effective vaccination.*

01/31/2013- Walgreens and Take Care Clinics have initiated new programs intended to improve patient care . These programs are predominantly focused on improving communication between physicians, pharmacists, and patients. The two companies are also exploring the possibility of sharing electronic records thereby providing individuals with the opportunity to schedule online appointments and take access of other online features. These programs have the opportunity of cutting $4.4 billion from the health care related expenditures.*

Proper Healthcare Communication Is Key Have you ever had an experience where your patients answer back with “Huh?” after you provide medication counseling? Have patients become angry because you didn’t know which hypertension medication to which they were referring? These situations arise from a lack of communication or a miscommunication between the patients and healthcare providers. So what should we do to have better conversation with the patients? What skills do we need to counsel them with their thorough understanding? We address the answers at our “Health Communication Workshops.” For decades, studies have shown that managing medications can be a challenge for many people. Because of rapid change of complex healthcare system and increasing need for self-management, pharmacists’ roles have been emphasized in communication with the patients. Therefore, our Healthcare Literacy Committee provides a series of lectures and

interactive role-playing sessions for the students to develop their communication skills and to get comfortable with talking on patients’ literacy level. At our first event on October 24, Ms. Janet Ohene-Frempong from Clear Language Group examined what makes it hard for people to manage medications, especially people living with hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, or asthma. Furthermore, she explored barriers for pharmacists and physicians to communicate effectively across literacy levels, languages, and diverse cultural perspectives and identify practical ways to lower the numerous barriers to effective communication about medications and how to use them. This event is a part of Advocacy Month events, and students got a certification when they complete the entire series of Health Communication Workshop. If you have a difficulty of counseling patients or wanted to practice effective communication skills, the AMCP Healthcare Literacy events are great place to start! Pharmacy Students Compete in Cut-Throat Competition For several years, Rutgers AMCP has been competing in the National P&T competition hosted by AMCP/FMCP (Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy/Foundation of Managed Care Pharmacy). Each year, several teams of four students develop a drug presentation, deciding whether or not the drug is suitable to inclusion in a managed care formulary. A local competition is held to determine who will compete for a spot at nationals. Each year, Rutgers is among the eight chosen schools to compete on the national level at the AMCP Annual Conference. For the 2012 competition, the Rutgers team won the national competition for the first time in school history. This year, Rutgers is looking to repeat their performance in April, and bring more recognition to the Rutgers AMCP chapter. If you’re looking to get involved in managed care and advancing the role of pharmacists, the National P&T Competition is a great way to show the world just what a pharmacist can do! Your team will use the given monograph and case to design and support a coverage plan for the given drug for the patients in your institution. There will be several mandatory seminars to help teams familiarize pharmacology, pharmacoeconomics, and database article research.

The National P&T Competition is a great experience for any EMSOP student, years P1 through P4. In addition to the decision-making skills you will develop, you can even get two elective credits from participating in the competition! Students Get Involved in Direct Patient Care If you had a chance to visit the Pharmacy School Involvement Fair, then you know that there are plenty of organizations to choose from, each addressing a specific niche in the pharmacy world. However, there is one theme that is consistent throughout: patient care (and stress, but let’s pretend that doesn’t count). As pharmacy students, we all want to make a positive impact on the lives of patients. Every pharmacy organization reflects that desire by giving chances for their student members to interact with patients and discuss common health threats. But what sounds better: several separated organizations holding small events, or organizations cooperatively working to hold large events? The presidents of AMCP, APhA, NCPA and SNPhA were faced with this question, and they decided that collaboration would bring more success than each organization could achieve alone. This is the first year that the pharmacy organizations are trying to work together on the front of patient outreach. And this means exciting new opportunities for all our members! First off, if a student misses a training session, they now have the opportunity to attend another training session hosted by another organization. Collaboration also prevents scheduling conflicts between training sessions. We don’t want to make our members choose between events, so by coordinating meeting times we ensure maximum participation at each event.

This applies to both training sessions and small outreach clinics. Also, this collaboration means the events are more staggered, giving our members more chances to get involved and practice their communication skills. While there are many benefits to patient care collaboration, this is still only the first year. Communication between the organizations will take some time to become solid. However, once the dust settles, we’ll be able to have larger patient outreach events. For example, this past October AMCP, APhA, NCPA and SNPhA collaborated on two Diabetes Walks: the JDFR Walk on October 21st and the ADA Walk on October 27th. Each organization had its own separate Diabetes-related posters, but coming together for a combined set-up. These collaborations give Rutgers Pharmacy a better reputation and it’s a great chance to interact with leaders in the other pharmacy organizations! After hearing all these great things about Patient Care, I wouldn’t be surprised if you want to get involved! Networking Within the Pharmacy World

After the eight rounds are over, there is a break-out session where pharmacists and students can continue to talk without time constraints. Pharmacists wear nametags that identify their affiliation with hospital, industry, community, managed care, or another niche. Although no resumes are allowed, students can bring business cards. Each business card has the potential to open new doors to career development or other opportunities. Follow up is important, as the Speed Networking Event is just a starting point for promising new relationships. Students are encouraged to touch base with their contacts every few months to maintain the connection. When the pharmacists in attendance were asked about how many contacts they had maintained with someone that they met at the Speed Networking Event, there was an average of two new connections made per pharmacist.

As unnerving as it may be to some people, networking is an essential skill in any professional environment. Pharmacy is no exception. The Speed Networking Event is an innovative event started at Rutgers that has since made a splash about pharmacy schools nation-wide. Around 80 pharmacists from a variety of disciplines are invited, giving students the opportunity to interact and learn from well-established pharmacy professionals with diverse backgrounds. The pharmacists are able to share their experiences and advise students exploring potential career paths. During the training session before the Speed Networking Event, students are taught how to prepare an elevator speech (a 60 second summary of who they are) so that they can practice using them with professional contacts at the actual event. Simply writing up an elevator speech is not enough. It is important for the elevator speech to sound natural, rather than memorized or rehearsed, as new contacts (and eventually employers) want to see natural personalities. Even if a student makes a mistake, that's okay – it’s much better to be making those mistakes now than when it really matters. The low-stress environment of the Speed Networking Event is one of the major factors that draw students every year.

The 4th Annual AMCP/AZO Speed Networking Event was held on Thursday, February 7th, in the BCC MPR. The formal portion of the event involves eight rounds of six minute networking sessions between students and pharmacy professionals. Last year, most of the interactions turned out to be one-onone, allowing each student to be given more individual experience.
