For years people believed that antioxidant supplements could prevent anything, from cancer to heart attacks, strokes, cataracts and more. It made sense, because damage caused by wayward oxygen could trigger tumors, ruin arteries and blur vision, so the belief was that antioxidant supplements could flush that damage away. An update from the Health Study published in the October 2011 issue of the International Journal of Cancer found that antioxidant supplements do not work as well as those found in foods because they may not reach the part of the body where they are needed most. Also, too many antioxidants may actually speed up the oxidation process. You might want to avoid getting this element in a form of supplement and turn to nature’s packaging like beans, blueberries, and grapes.
