If the River was Whiskey

“They deliver their punky, fiddle flying, Cajun dancing, raucous hoe down with a huge burst of energy” supajam

ABI MOORE

Join Holy Moly & The Crackers for an evening of lively music, tall tales and hard liquor. The perfect collision of rowdy music, dancing, and storytelling, this medley of original songs and old time drinking tunes is best enjoyed with a wee dram in hand. A visceral blend of searing folk/blues sounds wound with a classic and tragic tale of a young man looking for his place in the world; it is a show full of humour and the band’s high energy folk music.

Abi Moore’s strength lies in her ability to engage a live audience and for her astounding voice that delivers powerfully insightful lyrics, effortlessly beautiful melodies and honest observations with absolute conviction. Lauded by the music press as “intelligent, acoustic folk/pop with an American twist”, whether she is singing with heartbreaking vulnerability or raising a flag of protest, she packs a poweful punch of integrity and vitality.

If The River Was Whiskey is an evening filled with singing, dancing and drinking as the six piece band take you on a thrilling and heart pounding journey.

JOHN WRIGHTSON BAND

Rooted in the improvisational traditions of jazz, this engaging band moves from raucous barrel house blues to thoughtful, spacious ballads across a variety of grooves, creating an electric atmosphere.

Following from their huge sell-out show at the Sage Gateshead, John Wrightson Band will be touring to a rural venue near you! Performing songs from a wide variety of composers, from John Wrightson’s own material to Beatles, Elvis, Cliff Richard, Fats Waller, Irving Berlin, and many more.

Fascinated by the combination of the boundless potential of improvisation, coupled with a technical proficiency, she released her debut album ‘The Spy’. Tuned In, Redcar Wed 4th Nov, 7pm £5 / U18s £2

Bessie Mayson muses on the extraordinary life of her famous big sister, Isabella Beaton. Quiet, obedient Isabella fell for a charming publisher called Sam Beeton, and joined his rackety life in journalism, culminating in her world-famous “Beeton’s Book of Household Management”. Her family disapproved. But were they right? Thirty years on, Bessie is not so sure… Burniston & Cloughton Village Hall Fri 27th May, 7.30pm £8 / U18s £5

You will be gripped; you will love the songs; you will sing along; you will laugh; above all, you will be moved.

This is Burton’s life story - from working on a rhubarb farm to becoming the best British cycling all-rounder for 25 consecutive years and, in 1967, setting a 12 hour time-trial which has not been broken to this day. Whilst setting it, she caught up with Britain’s fastest male cyclist and, legend has it, offered him a liquorice allsort as she sailed past.

Ranging from much-loved favourites to forgotten gems – all sung live in close-harmony, this little-known true story is told through the fabulous songs of the period.

Written by Maxine Peake, this charming and critically acclaimed play celebrates the life of Yorkshire woman Beryl Burton - the greatest woman on two wheels.

Beryl evokes a sporting world before drugs and commercial sponsorship, a family pulling together against the odds, the admirable camaraderie and selflessness of the amateur cycling community and, at the centre of it all, one truly remarkable woman.
