Just Running For The Bling Bling. Does it matter to you? Do you run for the Bling? Do you have a lot of Running Bling and do you display it? I'll have to admit that I had never thought much about it until last weekend. As some of you know, I try to gather the results of every race in South Carolina and send them in to be posted on Running Journal's website. Check them out at Running.Net/content/results. When searching for hidden results, you might be surprised at how some race results are extremely difficult to find (sometimes I wonder when they are poorly done or exclude a lot of crucial details like age, gender, hometown or state if the finish services want the results to ever be seen). When you abandon all hope of finding results you can search for them on your favorite search engine. I prefer DuckDuckGo.com since they don't track where you've been and sell the information, but a lot of people use the better known Google. So I found the results of a race hidden as a link on Facebook. The comment that one participant had put there caught my eye. It said something like this: “I was disappointed that this race didn't have much Bling, not even finisher medals. I get them at almost all the races I run and I've gotten a lot more at other races. I ONLY RUN THEM FOR THE BLING.” I added the emphasis here. Do you run for the Bling? Did I run for the Bling? Maybe in a way everyone runs for the Bling in one way or another. Maybe it just depends on how you define Bling. So is your Bling on display? Look around and check out where you display it if you do. I have to admit that I have a few things from the almost 800 races I ran (before the car wreck a few years ago ended my running career). As I was writing this, I took a break to see how much stuff I was displaying. Kathy and I both won a lot of stuff (for me mainly age group awards) and we both put most of them in boxes up in the attic and donated them to races that were recycling trophies (or like the trophy run the Charleston Running Club used to sponsor when we lived there. Everyone who ran the race got to pick the trophy they wanted in reverse finish order, last place picked first. It was fun, and made sure people who rarely or never won a trophy got one.) But what Bling of mine is on display at our house? Okay, here goes, so you may want to skip this paragraph: A 1980

River Run 15K Lucite award (the first time I broke 60 minutes at that distance). The 1980 New York City Marathon certificate (framed). The 1981 Marine Corps Marathon certificate (framed). A 3rd place age group trophy 1982 Cooper River Bridge Run 10K (the first time I ran under 38 minutes at 10K), and several top 5% age group awards over the years from the same race. A 1984 Kiawah Island Pelican trophy. A 1992 South Carolina RRCA Hall of Fame plaque. A 1996 top 1,000 finisher mug at the Peachtree 10K in Atlanta. A 1998 Charlie Post 5k award when Kathy and I both won the Grand Masters award. A 2002 Charlie Post award - a lighthouse statue. A 2002 Cooper River Bridge Run Hall of Fame Plaque. A 2011 Senior Grand Master winner plaque from the Rice Run 5K in Walterboro. I realize now that the ones on display are the ones with meaning to me. They were great performances or meaningful performances. I was surprised to realize that I didn't have a single one from any of the few races that I won. I think because they didn't mean a lot. I can remember saying after those races that I only won because the really good runners had run somewhere else that day. And I really believe it. So you tell me - do I have too much Bling on display? Do you runners who consider, or did consider, yourself serious runners, run just for the Bling like casual runners do? You'll have to decide that for yourself. As for me, I think everyone who runs, for any reason is getting the health benefits and improved quality of life. And that makes it worthwhile to run for a lifetime. Bling or no Bling.
