from the head of school Dear Members of the Rumsey Family, Despite the most unusual circumstances, last year was an exceptional year at Rumsey Hall School—evidenced by the artistic, athletic, and academic achievements of our students. The support from the community was also, once again, outstanding. Due to your efforts, we celebrated a successful year in the Annual Fund with giving totaling $1,000,501. As important as the gifts themselves is the reconnection that is often made between the school and past constituents as we hear about alumni accomplishments, both personal and professional. As a result of the Annual Fund, we have been able to continue the outstanding level of academic preparation for tomorrow’s leaders—a foundation that has long-been the hallmark of the Rumsey experience. Specifically, despite uncertain times brought on by the pandemic, the Annual Fund has helped us maintain salaries and benefits for our talented faculty—the lifeblood of the school—and support our arts, athletic, extracurricular, and academic programs. We appreciate you for your support of the Annual Fund, as a volunteer, and for the sacrifices you make to send your child to Rumsey. We take our role as financial stewards seriously; subsequently, ensuring our tuition is thoughtfully managed and salaries and benefits are competitive. Your gift to the Annual Fund goes a long way to making this happen. It is sometimes hard to quantify one’s support for the school; yet, I can think of one example that typifies our Rumsey students and suggests we are doing something right. At an assembly very early in the school year, Mr. Ough announced that on the coming Saturday, students would leave at 7:15 a.m. to go to the beach on a service trip to pick up trash. Understanding adolescent proclivity toward picking up trash and getting up early on Saturday mornings, I was feeling quite pessimistic about the endeavor, and badly for Mr. Ough. Imagine my surprise, then, when I learned that twenty-eight students immediately signed up and there was a waitlist for the trip. Since that time, I have seen countless other examples of our successes every day ...it makes me incredibly proud to be a member of the Rumsey community.

from the chief financial officer The 2020-2021 academic year reminded me of one of my favorite movies, Groundhog Day. We were stuck in a pandemic that forced us into a daily routine that was exhausting, challenging, and stressful. To borrow a famous quote from the movie, I offer this version…..“Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don’t forget your masks, ‘cause it’s COVID out there, it’s COVID out there every day”. While COVID was our everyday reality, with testing, Zoom meetings, and mask mandates, the Rumsey Hall community responded with strength, patience, and a newfound resilience to making the abnormal normal. The School was certainly impacted financially by the pandemic. With COVID expenses representing a significant expense, we also were not able to have a summer school program or rent our hockey and tennis facilities. Rumsey’s enrollment, however, was strong, with 313 students attending. Despite the financial setbacks from COVID, the School remains strong financially. The School’s endowment ended the year on June 30, 2021, at $34.7 million, up 24% from June 30, 2020. The Annual Fund surpassed the budgeted goal of $1 million, just nosing over that mark at $1,000,501. A remarkable achievement in a very difficult year. As we planned for the current academic year, much discussion centered on when we would be normal, normal defined as COVID free or minimized, at least. We believed that November or December would see that happening. While we will still test, mask and zoom, most school activities should return and COVID expenses are expected to be minimized. Enrollment for 2021-2022 again was strong at 319. The endowment continues to benefit from strong market conditions and our annual operating budget will be improved over last year. Rumsey Hall benefits from a wonderful campus, with dedicated faculty and staff working hard each and every day. Our trustees are fully engaged in the School’s finances, operations and strategic planning. The challenges of this past year has made the school stronger and more confident. With the continued support of our students, parents and alumni, Rumsey is poised to prosper and grow.

from the director of advancement Dear Rumsey Hall Community, Thank you so much for your incredible generosity to our school during the 2020–2021 fiscal year! During a challenging fundraising climate and in a year with many uncertainties, our Trustees, faculty/staff, alumni, current parents, and former parents continued to make Rumsey a philanthropic priority. For this, we are extraordinarily grateful. Last fiscal year, Rumsey’s Annual Fund surpassed $1M, which is a powerful statement of what our school means to each of you who supported us so generously. For many, including my family, their Rumsey Hall education was a transformative experience. It was here that our dedicated faculty nurtured many of their learning habits and where their personal values took root. Thanks to your generous support, these traditions continue today. The Advancement Office conducted the school’s third annual Giving Day campaign on May 26, 2021. The Office announced the campaign on May 19th via email and social media and encouraged constituents to make an Annual Fund gift in advance of the 26th.
Day, and the Giving Challenge, was overwhelming. To keep constituents engaged, we shared up-to-the-minute updates regarding our progress toward our goals on social media with photos featuring students and faculty and sent email updates throughout the day.
Understanding that the year was a very different kind of year for the Rumsey community, the messaging of Giving Day 2021 focused on celebrating and rewarding the resilience of our faculty, staff, students, and families at large. Prior Giving Day campaigns focused on increasing Annual Fund participation rather than targeting a specific dollar goal. Given the past success of Giving Day, the Advancement Office set a participation goal of 120 gifts in honor of each dedicated member of Rumsey’s faculty and staff who came together to ensure an enriching learning environment where our students could grow as critical thinkers and compassionate members of a community while modeling Rumsey’s core values of honesty, kindness, and respect. Then we upped the ante and set an additional goal of raising $100,000 in new gifts to the Annual Fund.
Unsurprisingly, we met our goal of securing 120 gifts to the Annual Fund by 8 PM. By that point of the evening, we had raised close to $121,000. Not wanting to lose momentum, the Advancement Office announced a stretch goal of raising a total of $150,000 for the school by midnight. The overall response to Giving Day was record-breaking on all fronts. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Rumsey received 201 gifts and raised $180,400 for the 2020-21 Annual Fund. This was 59 gifts and nearly $47,000 more than last year, and the support we received helped the school earn the entire $25,000 offered in the Giving Challenge. Thank you, Blue Dogs!
As early gifts started to come in, the Advancement Office received an exciting offer from one of our Rumsey families by way of a Giving Challenge. This generous family committed to contributing $100 to the school for every person who contributed ANY AMOUNT on Giving Day. Plus, they’d contribute $1,000 for anyone who contributed $1,000 or more, up to a total of $25,000. Giving Day officially launched at 9 AM on May 26 and ran until midnight. Planned Gifts Today Support Rumsey Students Tomorrow The Rumsey Hall School Heritage Society Bequests and other forms of planned philanthropy invested in the Endowment remain a permanent part of the School’s financial foundation. A growing number of constituents in the Rumsey Family are including the School in their long-range planning to make a lasting difference. Bequests or gifts may be made through your estate by including a provision in your will or living trust, or by naming

Rumsey as a beneficiary of a Retirement Plan or Life Insurance Policy. The amount gifted to the School can be expressed as a dollar amount or as a percentage of the assets to be allocated. No bequest is too small. A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) provides donors as beneficiaries of annual income payments during their lifetimes. The remaining assets will be invested in Rumsey’s Endowment in perpetuity, or for a designated restricted purpose or scholarship. A CRT is an excellent vehicle for gifts of appreciated stock or property, since the trust is tax exempt and does not incur capital gains tax when assets are sold. Please let us know if you have included Rumsey in your estate plans.
