UN Millennium Campaign and G-Star Raw partner to create awareness for global poverty during New York Fashion Week New York/Amsterdamâ€“ A unique collaboration between the United Nations Millennium Campaign and international denim brand G-Star Raw sets out to raise awareness for the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) during New York Fashion Week. Actors Alan Cumming and Heather Graham will lend their support to draw attention to the commitments made by world leaders to achieve the MDGS and end extreme poverty by 2015. The platform will be the G-Star Raw Spring/Summer 2009 runway show and the immediately to follow, NY Raw Night in the Park Avenue Armory on Thursday September 11th, 2008 at 7pm. PRESS CHECK IN BEGINS AT 6:30 PM ON SEPTEMBER 11. UN High Level Event The timing of this collaboration coincides with the UN High Level event on the MDGS to be held in New York on September 25th. Hosted by the UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN General Assembly, the event brings together government leaders, as well as leaders from the private and non-governmental sectors and civil society to take stock of progress on the MDGS and to make concrete and practical commitments towards implementation of the MDGS. MDGS Awareness The Millennium Development Goals are a bold promise made in our names - to end poverty and inequality by 2015. We are halfway to that deadline and still almost a billion people worldwide struggle to survive on less than a dollar a day. It doesnâ€™t have to be this way. The UN Millennium Campaign sets out to support citizens to remind their governments to keep their promise made in the year 2000 and implement the Millennium Development Goals. It is urgent that all of us get involved and take action to remind our governments we expect them to deliver on the commitments made to implement the Millennium Development Goals now. We are the generation that can end poverty, we cannot afford to turn away from what is one of the most powerful and inspirational ideas ever to challenge history. G-Star Raw and the G-Star Raw Denim Foundation (GSRD Foundation) share the objectives of the Millennium Campaign and the MDGS. Both partners are proud to provide a dynamic platform during New York Fashion Week, to jointly raise awareness of these important Goals. The Event Actors Alan Cumming and Heather Graham will welcome a multi-cultural audience of fashion journalists and directors, movie celebrities and musicians, business leaders and special
UN guests. Following the runway show both actors will curate the first New York edition of the global G-Star Raw Night series, on behalf of the UN Millennium Campaign. In keeping with previous Raw Nights in Los Angeles and Tokyo, the event will offer artists a platform to interact with their audience in unexpected ways. Performers will get total creative freedom to bring their talents to highlighting the MDGS in an original and pure form. To engage guests, G-Star Raw – known for its strong creative DNA – will use uniquely designed MDG-themed decor to create a dedicated MDG Room at the venue as an interactive platform on-site. Here, every individual will be able to take action by sending digital messages of support for the MDGS to Heads of State.
