Bluefield (2-1, 1-0 MSC) and St. Catharine (2-1, 0-0 MSC) both enter today’s game on a two game winning streak following season opening losses. After opening the season with an 80-74 loss to Virginia University of Lynchburg the Rams responded with 90-76 win over cross-town rival Bluefield State before shocking the conference in their Mid-South debut with a seven point (9689) victory over the third ranked and MSC preseason favorite Tigers of Georgetown on Thursday night at home while St. Catharine opened the year by dropping an 84-71 loss to Indiana University Southeast before taking Grace College 81-73 in overtime then romped Knoxville College 101-68. The Rams are led by a pair of 20-plus point scorers with Kearsten Marion (26.0) and Byron Carpenter (23.67). Carpenter a 6-foot-7 center was last year’s Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year hasn’t slowed down in his final season with the Rams. He ranks sixth in the NAIA in offensive rebounds per game (4.0) and blocks per game (2.0) while adding the 10th best points per game (23.67). Marion a 5-foot-8 guard has poured in the fifth most points (26.0) in the NAIA while making 3.6 3-pointers per game, good for 10th best in the NAIA. The Houston, Texas, native also ranks 30th in steals per game, 45th in free throw percentage (.833), and 46th in 3-pointers made (11). Andrew Wilson and Devin Page both added season highs against No. 3 Georgetown with 21 and 13 points respectively. Deante Hallums rounds out the starters for the Rams who ranks sixth along with Carpenter in offensive rebounds per game (4.0) also ranks 35th in assist to turnover ratio (3.0). The 6-foot-4 forward recorded career highs in points (9) and rebounds (9) against No. 3 Georgetown. The Patriots are led by Marquis Lee (18.0), DeShawn Mitchell (14.5), Terrance Smotherman (10.5), and Kevin Kornegay (10.0) on offense while 7-foot-2 Jamarious Sykes has seen limited action averaging 6.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in 13 minutes per game. Omar Skinner provides 7.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
