Eye Opening Aesthetic Procedures Eyelid and Brow Lifts

THERE IS A POPULAR SAYING THAT SUGGESTS “…the eyes are the window to the soul.” If that is the case, perhaps your mirror is telling you some ‘window treatments’ are in order. According to cosmetic surgeon Dr. Joseph Rucker, a youthful eye is one in which the upper eyelid shows the natural fold at the mid-portion of the lid with no evidence of skin hanging over the fold. Younger people have a large space between the outside of the upper lid and the outside end of their eyebrow. Once we step into middle age, however, our eyes begin to change. We may notice some or all of the following characteristics of aging:

Joseph W. Rucker, MD, FACS

surprised to learn that a saggy brow (caused by weakened attachments to the brow bone above the eye itself) contributes to the excessive folding of the upper eyelid skin. Without correcting the brow, you are treating the symptom and leaving the cause. Isolated procedures often call attention to the “unimproved” areas and make the enhanced area obvious.” Patients often comment on how surprised they are that a small procedure could produce such significant results. Dr. Rucker’s advice to his post-surgical patients? “Patients who undergo upper eyelid surgery should be on some type of a maintenance program in order to keep their new appearance looking fresh. We recommend topicals that are directed toward their skin type and in some cases advise profractional laser treatments twice a year. Our proprietary product line includes a collagen-enhancing highly-penetrating serum which results in a significant improvement of the wrinkles of the upper and lower eyelid.”

• Excessive skin of the upper eyelid causing a tired or fatigued appearance with possible obstruction of vision • Loss of the fold of the upper eyelid • Fat pads both above and below the eye • Brow droop Dr. Rucker explains the aging process. “The complaints of eyelid problems usually occur after the age of 40. When we get older there is progressive loss of elasticity of the skin and the muscle beneath which causes excessive skin sag. If there is associated brow droop, the result is baggy eyelids.” The indication for eyelid surgery usually revolves around the correction of excess skin or bulging of the upper eyelid, plus or minus the lower eyelid or brow. Addressing lower eyelid skin is cosmetic and usually aimed at improving the overall contour and smoothness of the lower eyelid. By slightly tightening the skin and partially removing or rearranging the fat pad and bulges of the lower lid, you not only have a more youthful appearance, but for some it minimizes or eliminates dark circles. One of the most misunderstood concepts is the link between eyelid appearance and brow position. Lifting the brow to the proper position completes the rejuvenation and helps maintain the “eye opening” effect. “Because the eye is considered one aesthetic unit, and depending upon the patient’s signs of aging, I often recommend rejuvenating both upper and lower lids along with the brow for a more natural appearance. Patients are

When done with a proper, conservative technique, brow and eyelid lifts are subtle procedures with dramatic results.

Rejuvenation Ladder • Rejuvenation can be approached superficially with topical astringents which stimulate the collagen growth and tighten the skin. Learn more about skin care at www.enza.com. • Strategically placed Botox injections at the outside margin of the eye can reduce the appearance of crow’s feet. • Restylane used for the lower lids can minimize the appearance of fat pads and create a smoother transition between the lower lid and cheek. • Profractional laser or light microlaser peels are highly recommended. • Surgical intervention guarantees a more permanent result. A light laser peel may accompany the surgery to optimize the overall effect.

SKIN CARE

Winter Skin Rejuvenation Deb Markham, Paramedical Aesthetician WINTER WEATHER CAN STIR UP ALL KINDS OF trouble for the skin, often bringing with it many culprits that can leave skin feeling beat up, dry, dull and weathered. Luckily, Deb and Stephanie are here to fight the villains for your winter woes with an arsenal of treatments and products just waiting for your request at ENZA MediSpa. We are equipped with a variety of skin-rejuvenating treatments suited for any skin situation. Dry skin, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and acne breakouts do not stand a chance against these treatments available at ENZA MediSpa.

Super Peels

Lite Chemical Peels are topically applied acids that cause a controlled shedding of skin layers and aid in the restoration of the skin’s surface. Depending on the skin type, there are several types of peels that may be used to achieve your desired outcome. This type of peel is designed to help smooth rough, dry skin and even out skin tone. They have been a popular means of rejuvenation for thousands of years, originating in the days of Cleopatra!

BBL Light Treatments

Broad Band Light photofacials are the perfect way to melt away winter’s chilling effects as well as fighting the fine lines often caused by holiday stress. This remarkable treatment is also effective for rosacea, enlarged pores, facial vascular redness, sun damage and hyperpigmentation. These treatments work by using a broad spectrum light that accelerates the skin’s natural regeneration process.

Microdermabrasions

This micro exfoliation is a skin-revitalizing treatment that helps repair skin that is damaged from environmental exposure-such as sun, wind, pollution and the unwanted effects of aging. The Diamond Tome wand removes the dead, outer layer of skin by gently exfoliating the skin with natural diamond chips, promoting the growth of healthy new skin cells. Although exfoliation is a necessary skin care step year-round, it is especially vital for those with dry skin weathered by the harsh effects of winter.

Exfoliate

A luxurious cream can’t do a thing slathered onto flaky skin. “Dead cells have an uneven surface that dulls the complexion,” says dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD. Daily use of an effective exfoliate at home along with professional treatments will encourage the proper shedding of dead skin cells. Not only will this result in skin that looks better - it will also improve the skin’s overall health.

Hydrating Facials

Battle the chilling effects of winter with a hydrating facial that contains moisturizing nutrients such as natural orange aromatics, honey, natural milk proteins and hyaluronic acid to help improve the appearance of dry, dull and damaged skin. Extracts of black currant and soybean oil give the weathered skin a much-needed boost.

Nourish

Spread a dime-size dollop of cream over your face and the same amount to your neck and décolleté. Skin has five layers, so rub the product in for two minutes to help it penetrate and improve circulation. Moisturized skin reflects light. Nourish it and the glow will come.

Enhance

Sometimes you need a booster shot of bronzing powder! Wait at least five minutes after applying moisturizer, then brush a powdered bronzer where the sun would naturally hit: the cheekbones, forehead, bridge of nose and chin to create a little glow! Radiant skin is a sign to yourself and to the world that you are healthy, blood is flowing, and joy is in your life. Your skin need not be flawless – it should appear healthy, well cared for and glow from within!

Enza Essentials offers the nourishing ingredients in the new SATURATION SYSTEM to restore the health and glow to your weathered-winter skin.

Are Exercise and Weight Loss Not Giving You the Abdomen You Desire? Joseph W. Rucker, MD, FACS THE TUMMY-TUCK (ABDOMINOPLASTY) procedure helps to flatten your abdomen by removing excess skin and fatty tissue. This procedure is suitable for men and women who are in good general health. Tummy tuck should not be confused with liposuction (the cosmetic surgery used to remove fat deposits), although your surgeon may also elect to perform liposuction to improve the overall results. Good candidates for tummy-tuck are women who have muscles and skin stretched by multiple pregnancies, and persons who were obese at one point and still have excessive fat deposits or loose skin in the abdominal area. If you are a woman who is still planning to have children, you may want to wait to investigate the tummy tuck procedure until you are through bearing children. If you are planning to lose weight, you do not want to consider a tummy tuck until you have reached and are maintaining your goal weight.

How is a tummy tuck done?

Depending on your desired result, this surgery can take from 1-2 hours. The complexity is dependent upon the amount of excess tissue you have in the lower abdominal wall. Most patients will receive a general anesthetic. There are several options for tummy tuck. Your surgeon will examine you and then discuss your desired results and anticipated outcome for each. COMPLETE ABDOMINOPLASTY The incision is made in the lower abdominal wall area, from hipbone to hipbone. The excess tissues beneath the umbilicus (belly button) are subsequently removed and the scar is hidden beneath the panty line. BELT ABDOMINOPLASTY This procedure is for patients who have usually lost a considerable amount of weight, and the laxity of the skin and fatty tissues occurs not just on the front of the abdomen, but also around to the back. This requires a circumferential excision of these tissues to get the overall best result. PARTIAL OR MINI ABDOMINOPLASTY Partial or mini abdominoplasty is often performed on patients whose fat deposits are located in a very small area beneath the belly button. This procedure can be done in the office with local IV sedation. Continued on next page.

PLASTIC SURGERY

How to prepare for a tummy tuck If you are a smoker, you will have to stop completely for a certain period, as determined by your doctor, because smoking can cause improper and poor wound healing. It is also important to eat a well balanced diet, as nutrition plays a key role in the healing process. Your physician will discuss with you the medications that you are currently taking and whether these can be taken during the time leading up to your surgery.

What are the potential complications and side effects of tummy tuck surgery? In the approximately 1,000 procedures that I have performed, most patients rate the initial pain level at 3 to 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. After surgery, all patients should expect some type of minor discomfort for at least one week; swelling may occur for 2-5 months. You may experience some numbness and bruising over the treated areas. The numbness will resolve between 2-6 months after your operation. With any surgery there are risks. The most common are infection, excessive scarring and skin loss.

Does insurance cover this procedure?

Insurance carriers generally do not cover elective cosmetic surgery, but your carrier may consider coverage of a certain percentage if you have a hernia that can be corrected during this procedure. You should discuss this with your surgeon during your initial consultation.

Recovery

The majority of my patients love their look after this procedure. However, you must realize that you might not feel like yourself for several weeks after this operation. Most patients can probably return to office work within two weeks and heavy lifting within 3-5 weeks. Your body has been under tremendous stress, both emotionally and physically. It is very important that you follow proper diet and exercise to maintain your new look.

6 Fitness Goal Tips from Trainer Lori Heck Lori Heck, Personal Trainer WELCOME TO 2012! IT’S TIME TO “TURN OVER A new leaf ”, start with a “clean slate”, “clean up my act”, and the clichés go on and on! Here are a few things you can do to be sure your New Year’s fitness goals don’t fizzle out.

1 Don’t Wait Till Monday To Get Started

Start now! It is small changes in nutrition, exercise, and attitude that will bring about the biggest change. The simple statement, “You are worth it!” is all you need to get you on your way. Believe it and embrace it.

2 Set a Goal

Set a goal but make it realistic. Then, set smaller goals that can be accomplished daily, weekly and/or monthly as stepping stones to your big goal.

3 Hire a Certified Personal Trainer

I know what you’re thinking, “of course she is going to say that!” Your certified personal trainer will have the knowledge, expertise, motivation, and help you to set goals to help you reach your fitness goal safely and effectively. Not only will you reach your goal but you are more likely to maintain your goal.

4 Find a Workout Partner

A workout partner should have similar goals as you. Hold each other accountable, encourage each other and design a plan and reward system together. Couple this with the personal trainer, and you are not only going to see results, but all guess-work will be taken away and lots of fun to be had!

5 DON’T EVER GIVE UP!

mashed ripe bananas cup whole milk yogurt eggs, lightly beaten Tbsp butter, melted and cooled tsp fresh lemon zest tsp pure vanilla extract

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease a 9x5 loaf pan and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, toasted walnuts, sugar, baking soda and salt. Set aside. In a medium bowl, mix together the mashed banana, yogurt, eggs, butter, lemon zest and vanilla. Using a rubber spatula, fold the banana mixture into the dry ingredients, mixing only until there are no streaks of flour left. The batter will be very chunky. Scrape the batter into your prepared pan and bake until the bread is golden and just baked through, about 50-55 minutes. You do not want to over bake the bread. Allow the bread to cool in the pan set on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then remove it from the pan and set it directly on the wire rack to cool.
