SMALL

Recently, while our cities are rapidly developing, a lot of things which are important have been forgotten, such as memories, nature, and the right to have a good outdoor space to rest. Therefore, we need to think: How can we bring back the things that we have lost?

Issue

Before Meander Cutoff

This area is the hypermarket area of Taipei, and lot of companies set their offices here. Also, there are some big car repair centres. After Meander Cutoff

This area has kept a lot of space for the public, but most of spaces are unaccessible. Moreover, people in this area would rather stay in the office or a hypermarket because there is a lack of street furniture to sit or trees for cover.

User Roads Followed the Original Shape of River

They cannot find a place to sit while they are waiting for someone or walking around this area.

Plan

People seldom walk in this area due to a lack of street furniture and trees to filter the sunlight. Furthermore, this is an area with a high potential for flooding, so the pavements should be changed.

MEDIUM

An artist community wants to spread the idea of nature to the public in their garden, but there are some problems with this place. Moreover, they do not have much money for construction. Therefore, we need to think: How to use the limited resources to best improve this area?

Tour Plan

The Bamboo Curtain Studio used to be a pottery studio. Then, many artists in different art fields from different countries came here to join the Artist-in-residence programs. However, the general public rarely hears about this place. I suggested establishing a tour to introduce this studio, and also promoting the background story of the Bamboo Curtain Studio to the public. Moreover, the most important thing is to let people enjoy the natural environment and art around here and also learn how to respect nature.

Large

While the military left this seven hectare base with many historical buildings built during the Japanese colonial rule, the Taipei City Government did not know how to use this land. Therefore, we need to think: How to make best use of this space before it is ready to be developed?

EX-AIRFORCE BASE DA'AN, TAIPEI 2014

Site Analysis

The government does not have a clear idea for the use of this site, because there are too many conflicts of interest to have to deal with. Thus, there needs to be a temporary plan that in order to activate this place; if we do not want the site to be left unused. Therefore, I believe an edible landscape would be the best solution.

About the Food Issue

Taipei Urban Agriculture Map

Food produce is controlled by particular countries in recent years. Taiwan is a country which greatly relies on food imports. Also, Taipei is lacking in farmland. If a food crisis were to happen, we might face extremely harsh conditions.

Building Retention Principle

‧Original function ‧Over 40 years ‧Special form

The Land Feedback Reserves

According to the law, while a site is developing, 40% of the land has to be reserved for public use. The reason for keeping the west side for this is because it can connect the green belts in both the north and south. Also, it is beneficial for social activities. Moreover, due to the historical buildings in the middle of the site, it is best not to have a high level of development in this area.

To allow people to access this place more easily I tore down part of the wall. Citizens can come here to take a break, have a cup of tea, plant vegetables, and learn knowledge related to food. Moreover, it connects the community as this space will host many activities which everybody can join in on.

Old Street River

Rebuilding the Urban Waterfront

28

X Large

A long time ago, the development of Zhongli was started from the Old Street’s Riverbank. After that, because of the city growth, the river was forgotten by everyone. Recently, the covers of the river have been removed, but, people do not know how to access the space. Therefore, we need to think: How to re-establish the relationship between the river and the people?

Public Transportation Analysis

1921 The riverside area became prosperity and the cargo distribution.

1944 The development of city turned to focus on train station area.

Floor Analysis

1950 Chung Hsing Alley (blind person alley) became the fortune telling area.

1970 Old Street River was a clean river. Resident always washed clothes in the river andlighted a water lantern.

issue A) Reconnecting the relationship between the old street river and the people. 1989 the shopping centre covered the river.

30

B) How best to improve the city's infrastructure after the Taoyuan Metro service starts? 1. There are no safe pavements for pedestrian. 2. Building arcades are occupied by scooters, and every arcade is of a different height. 3. Buses have to drive down narrow streets or alleys.
