How many times would you come across a set of books which have become a best seller only after the authors' death? Not many that we know. What makes it more interesting is the fact that this book "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is the first of a set of three books; yet another Trilogy you may say; however these set were left unpublished till they were found after the author, Stieg Larsson's, death in 2004. Stieg was a Swedish and hence these three books of his were first published in his own language, but later translated in other languages. The popularity of these books, which came to be known as the Millennium Trilogy, was so huge that it became the second Best-seller in the world in the year 2008. In all they have sold more than 25 Million copies in 40 countries till date!! The success of a book translated from another language depends a lot on its translation; whether it still remains to be a good read.I must say that the translation does not affect the manner in which the flow of the story must have been intended! For someone who loves crime and fiction, I had to remove the bias I have for an Agatha Christie or an Enid Blyton, and then commence reading it. The novel begins in a slightly tedious manner which may prompt one to dump the book, but it is recommended that you continue because the pace then picks up and the story gets much more involving and intriguing. It is said that Stieg wrote this novel as he was disgusted on seeing a gang-rape of a girl in his teens. The girl, who was raped in real life, became his protagonists in this novel, a detective who is solving a serial murder mystery along with the other main character, a journalist (just like what Stieg was in his real life). This was his way of redeeming his folly of not helping the girl when she actually needed it. In fact there is an underlying theme of abhorrence against sexual violence in this novel. The Author has taken real Swedish towns as the setting for his novel, which is a novel idea and for those who have never visited Sweden, there is ample description to incite a search on the internet for those towns. The Novel offers a mix of all emotions with interesting storytelling and ample number of characters and twists and turns to keep you hooked. Being a crime mystery novel, it mixes the intrigue with suspense, drama, disgust and some comic relief in portions. Reading the other books is hence... inevitable! This is one of the very good fiction books I've come across.
