Foreword Words are important. They help us to understand our thoughts, express how we feel and communicate our ideas. Words have power. Things we say make a lasting impact on the lives of the people around us that hear them. We can even look back and trace significant decisions we have made to words that were said to us by trusted advisors and friends. Words are so important and powerful that when God wanted to create, John tells us that through the Word, “all things were made and without him nothing was made that had been made.” God’s Word is the single tool God uses to create the world God wants to see. Our words work in the same way. We typically accept that we must raise the standard when it comes to various areas of our lives, but we rarely consider how we should speak as believers. We often overlook what sorts of things we should and should not say. Here’s one thing we all must do: Speak Life! Over the course of the next 21 days, we will tame our tongues and transition our speech in order to transform our lives. We have the power to create and to destroy with the things we say. We’re committing to say what God wants us to say, so we will see what God wants us to see!

The 10 Commandments of the Speak Life Fast 1. Thou shalt not cuss 2. Thou shalt not fuss 3. Thou shalt not gossip 4. Thou shalt not criticize 5. Thou shalt not throw “shade” 6. Encourage one another 7. Reconcile and Restore 8. Rejoice in the Lord 9. Speak the Word 10. SPEAK LIFE

Mouth Guard

23

Proverbs 21:23 (NKJV) Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.

Basketball players, boxers and football players are among those who wear mouth guards to protect their mouths from injury. They know that without that protection, the force of the impact that they experience could cause significant damage. Well, the “mouth guard” is not just for sports – it is for life. This scripture in Proverbs tells us that “guarding our mouth” is one way to protect ourselves from trouble. All of us have said the wrong thing at the wrong time and those words have brought trouble to our lives. Politicians, athletes, government officials and anyone else in the public eye are used to having their words scrutinized on a daily basis. As children of God, we need to have even greater diligence in this area. How many times have we robbed ourselves of opportunities, blessings and even miracles because of what we said? Speak Life! Speak the Word of God over your life and see a change that you could not have expected. The Bible states that God is, “able to do exceeding abundantly, above whatever we ask or think.” That is a word of life right there! Today, make the decision to speak life, to guard your tongue and your mouth, to keep your soul from trouble and to BLESS YOUR LIFE!

Day 1

Lord, as I Speak Life today, help me to guard my words and protect my blessing.

The Test

Joshua 21:45 (ESV)  Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.

45

Sometimes “pass/fail” classes can be the toughest to take. Unlike other classes where you can get a range of grades, pass/fail classes only have two possibilities: success or failure. There is no in-between.  Are you “passing” the Speak Life tests in your life? Are you speaking God’s Promises even when things look the complete opposite? Are you using your words for Speaking Life or are you speaking against the very promises that you are depending on? Despite how we handle some of life’s challenges, it is a comfort to know that we can have faith that the promises of God will always work. There is no “fail” in God. As Christians, we know that God will be true to God’s Word. He has never failed us in the past and He will not fail us now! Hold to the promises of God, Speak Life and you will “pass” life with flying colors!

Day 2

Lord, as I go through tests that life presents, let me Speak Life!

The Mess-Age

Philippians 1:6 (KJV)  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.

6

I went grocery shopping and picked up a cake mix box that had a picture of a delicious looking chocolate cake on the front. I followed the instructions and mixed all the ingredients in the bowl. But when I looked in the bowl and then looked at the picture on the box, there was a big difference. What was in my bowl looked like a mess and the picture on the box looked wonderful. But that was because the cake was still in process. It just wasn’t finished yet. Many times, our lives can be the same way. We are hoping for the “picture perfect” life that we have in our minds, but sometimes all we see is a “mess.” That’s because sometimes we are just “in process.” There is a process that God takes us through so that we can become all that God has planned. The question is what will you say while you are in process. Will you Speak Life and say that God will work it out or will you say that the “mess” is your lot in life? God has a great history of taking what looks like a “mess” and turning it into a “mess-age.” A message of His goodness, grace and love for us all. Speak Life!

Day 3

Lord, as I go through the process, let me Speak Life!

I Will Keep Going

Psalm 27:13 (KJV)  I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

13

I have never been in a marathon (and probably never will), but I have friends who have. When I asked them how they were able to achieve such a phenomenal feat, they all had the same answer: “I kept going when my body said stop.” They had moments when they felt like stopping, when they felt like giving up, but their YES was greater than their “no” and they finished the race. We may never run a marathon, but we are all running in the race of life. And just like a race can make you tired, so can life. There will come a point in your life where your words of faith will have to overcome your intellect, your disappointment and your doubts. Your words of faith may be what makes the difference between failure and success. Being a Christian does not mean that you will not be discouraged, that you will not be disappointed or that you will not be exhausted. What it does mean is that you have access to a power that will let you keep going far longer than you ever could have imagined. Your God is powerful and that power is a part of you! Keep going. Your victory is waiting on you!

Day 4

Lord, help me to Speak Life and keep running!

Expert Witness

Acts 1:8 (NLT)  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 8

An expert witness is defined as “a person who is permitted to testify at a trial because of special knowledge or proficiency in a particular field that is relevant to the case.” Most of us will never be called upon to serve as an expert witness in a court case. But ALL of us are called upon to be expert witnesses for Christ. The early believers were given the Holy Ghost so that they could be bold in their proclamation of the gospel, the Good News. And on the day of Pentecost, Peter’s expert witness added thousands of believers to the church! He Spoke Life and the Church was born! The world is in desperate need of God’s love, God’s goodness, God’s forgiveness and so much more. The only way that the world will know all those great things is if you give expert testimony. If you Speak Life. Every day people you come in contact with need to see Jesus through your words, through your example and through your life! So, whether you realize it or not, you are on the stand and you are an expert witness for our Lord. Speak Life!

Day 5

Lord, let my words be a witness to your goodness!

Time for Change

Isaiah 43:19 (KJV)  Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. 19

Blockbuster Movies. Borders Books. Hostess Snack Cakes. Each company was successful, but when the market started to change they did not. Because they did not change, they lost business and eventually went bankrupt. In some ways, we can be just like those companies. Life throws things our way and we need to change to survive and succeed. This Speak Life Fast is a great opportunity to make a permanent change in an area that really matters: our speech. Almost everyone that God used in the Bible had to go through a major change in their life. From Noah in the Old Testament to Paul in the New Testament, they all made a decision to change. The blessings that you seek, the life that you are looking for may be on the other side of changing the words that you speak. It’s time for a change. SPEAK LIFE!

Day 6

Lord, help me to change my conversation from negative speaking to Speaking Life!

Get Packing

Matthew 9:17 (NLT) And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved. 17

When you take a trip, you pack a bag. How you pack is important but WHAT you pack is vital! You can pack shorts expertly, but if you are going to the North Pole those shorts won’t help you at all! Your day is the same way. Each day is a trip and you have to pack for it. Instead of packing a bag, you are packing YOU. Are you packed with joy, hope and love? Or are you packed with doubt, despair and pain? We often don’t have a choice as to what happens to us in life, but we DO have a choice as to what we carry with us in life. Only pack those things that will be a blessing in your life! We pack with the words that we say. Are you filling yourself with what will bless you? Are you speaking words that you want to carry? I may not know what is in your bag, but I do know what is in your future! Your future has favor, your future has joy, your future has peace and your future has victory! Even if you don’t have them now, make sure to save some space because one day your bag will be overflowing with the blessings of God! Get packing!

Day 7

Lord, let my heart and my mind be filled with Your Word!

Executive Order

27

Isaiah 14:27 (NLT) The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has spoken – who can change his plans? When his hand is raised, who can stop him?”

Every President has a powerful tool at their disposal called an Executive Order. An Executive Order is defined as: a rule or order issued by the president to an executive branch of the government and having the force of law. Basically, it means that within certain limitations, the President can use his or her executive power to make their words law. That is a lot of power! Well, as powerful as Presidential Executive Orders are they do not compare to the power of God’s Executive Orders! God spoke, and the universe came into being. God spoke, and the light separated from darkness. Jesus used that same “executive” power of speech to give sight to the blind, to give healing to the lame and even life to those who were dead. That is REAL power! God has used those same executive orders to say that you will be blessed, to say that you will be victorious, to say that no weapon that is formed against you will prosper. God’s Word is His executive order and it is filled with the great things that He has in store for us. So, make sure that your words line up with God’s. Speak Life and be encouraged. God has spoken a Word on your behalf!

Day 8

Lord, let my words line up with your Divine Will for my life!

Closer than You Think

Genesis 32:26 (NLT) Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

26

Are you thinking of giving up? Jacob was in that position. He was tired, he was scared and he had been wrestling all night. Things were tough, but he held on anyway because he believed that there would be a blessing at the end of the struggle. And he was right!    What about you? Are you thinking of giving up? Are you contemplating letting go of the promise? Well HOLD ON! Many times, the difference between success and failure, between victory and defeat, is how long you can hold on. What if you would achieve victory if you could hold on just one more hour, just one more day, just one more month? You have already held on this long. Hold on a little longer! God will help you, but you must make the choice.    Jacob spoke life to his situation. He knew that a blessing was on the other side of his pressing. Speak Life to your situation. Speak Life to yourself! Hold on, your victory is closer than you think!

Day 9

Lord, help me to hold on until the victory is won!

Stepping Up

Joshua 1:9 (NLT)  This is my command – be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

9

Have you ever been nervous about an opportunity? Wondered if you were up to the challenge? In those situations, you can either speak life or you can speak doubt. Speaking Life will allow you to “Step Up” and raise your level to match or exceed the level of the challenge. Joshua was in a situation where he had to do some serious stepping up. He was following in the footsteps of Moses, who had just died. Do you remember Moses? He led the Israelites out of Egypt, defeated Pharaoh and his army, spoke directly with God, wrote down the Ten Commandments; yes, that Moses! He achieved a lot. What about Joshua? Joshua’s list of achievements was zero! Military leaders, educators, politicians, priests and more were available and yet God chose Joshua. God knew that it was a big challenge, but God also knew that Joshua was able to step up. We will all have moments in our lives where we need to “step up.” It may be a new challenge on your job. It may be making changes in your lifestyle to improve your health. It may be raising your kids by yourself. It may be finally pursuing a lifelong dream.  It may be taking a chance on love. Whatever it is, to achieve it, you will have to step up and Speak Life. The advice that was given to Joshua, we can take as well. Be strong and courageous! God will give you the strength to match the challenge, but you have to supply the courage to try. Joshua succeeded magnificently and so will you! The greatest regret is not failure. The greatest regret is never trying. What is the point in believing in a God that can do EVERYTHING, if you won’t try SOMETHING! Today is a great day to Step Up and achieve the impossible.

Day 10

Lord, help me to Speak Life, Step Up and do something amazing!

Your Vote Matters

Deuteronomy 30:19 (NLT)  Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!

19

Your vote matters! I have been surprised by the number of persons who didn’t vote in the past because (in their words), “my vote does not matter.” Nothing could be farther from the truth. Every vote matters – especially yours! But all voting is not political. We also “elect” how we will live our lives. We vote between faith and fear. We vote between strength and weakness. We vote between hope and despair. The votes we cast and the choices we make determine our lives. And one of the ways that we vote is by what we say out of our mouths. Are you “electing” the promises of God or the evil of the enemy? We can’t choose all the things that come into our lives, but we can choose what we say about them! We choose what we give power to. That IS a choice. Every day, I hope that you are exercising your right to choose. Every day, I hope that you are choosing life by what you say! Speak Life and choose life!

Day 11

Lord, today I Speak Life and Choose Life!

Good & Tired

9

Galatians 6:9 (NLT) So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

So, there you are on the treadmill at the gym. You are ten minutes into your thirty-minute workout, and it happens, as it often does. You start to get tired. And when you get tired you have a choice to make – either to give in to the tiredness or to fight it and keep going. And most times, you keep going. And that makes you tired, but it also makes you better. Good and tired. Tiredness is not limited just to working out. We also know that doing right can be tiring, especially when you are doing the right things and not seeing any right results. You are working hard on the job and still not getting promoted. You are doing things right and seeing those who do it wrong, succeed. You are trusting God and still not seeing the miracle that you so desperately desire. And just like in working out, you have a choice to make. Do you give up or do you keep doing what is right?  This scripture in Galatians encourages us to keep doing what is right, even when we get tired. Why? Because it will pay off in the end. Your efforts are not in vain. You will be rewarded and it will be worth it. You will be tired, but you will be blessed! Don’t get tired of Speaking Life!

Day 12

Lord, help me to never get tired of Speaking Life!

Under Off icial Review

Job 23:13-14 (NLT)  But once he has made his decision, who can change his mind? Whatever he wants to do, he does. 14 So he will do to me whatever he has planned. He controls my destiny.

13

All football fans have watched a referee go over to the sideline to review a controversial play. Everyone has an opinion about the play in question, but only the referee’s decision counts as to whether the catch, the fumble, the touchdown, etc. will stand. Everyone sees the same thing, but only the referee has the authority to make the call. Many times in life, we have an opinion about something: this won’t work, this will never get better, I can’t do anything right and the list goes on and on. But even you do not have the final say! Lazarus was dead for DAYS and Jesus reversed the call and said LIFE! Whatever you are dealing with, whatever the situation, whatever has been taking away your sleep, remember it does not have the final say! Jesus does! So, if He says that you are coming out of this, you are! If He states that it will work out for your good, then it will! He has the authority to make the call.  When we Speak Life, we agree with God’s decision to bless our lives.

Day 13

Lord, thank You for “making the call” in my favor!

We Hold These Truths

John 8:32 (NLT)  And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

32

“We Hold These Truths” are the first four words in the second paragraph of The Declaration of Independence and possibly the most important. The rest of the document depends on those truths. As Christians, we hold to certain truths as well and these truths are found in the Bible. One of my favorite “truths” from the Bible is Jeremiah 29:11. The scripture gives us three truths: 1) God has a plan for our life; 2) God’s plan for our life is good; and 3) We should never lose hope because God has us covered! These are truths that we all can hold to and these truths will HOLD us as we go through tough times!   When David fought Goliath, he held onto the truth that God would give him victory. When Esther went before the king, she held onto the truth that God would be with her. Peter walked on water (for a while) by holding onto the truth that Jesus would not let him go. We all face things in our lives that will test our faith, test our resolve and test our strength. When we are tested, HOLD TIGHT to the truth of God’s Word and Speak Life!

Day 14

Lord, today help me to hold on to the truth of Your Word.

0-1

Romans 8:37 (NLT)  No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

37

After the first weekend of the season, half of the teams in the NFL have an 0-1 record. One loss and zero wins. If the season was to end today, the teams would be considered complete failures. The good thing is that the season does not end after the first game or after one loss. With the exception of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, EVERY Super Bowl Champion had at least one loss on their record. One loss is not fatal. One loss is not final. Every week, each team has a chance to improve their record. They can’t do anything about the past, but they can win the next game. They can focus on the failure of the past or on the possibility of the future. Champions learn from their mistakes, but don’t stay stuck in them. You and I are the same way. We are all going to experience some losses in life. Some will be big and some small. And just like a championship team, it is how you handle the losses you face that makes the difference. Disappointment, failure, pain, grief and despair are just a few of the losses we face. Don’t stop at your loss. Keep moving! The power of Christ is stronger than any loss we face. Overwhelming, undeniable, unstoppable victory is ours! But only if you play the season out! I don’t care what your record is, Speak Life, because you are a champion. God KNOWS it and you have to SPEAK IT!

Day 15

Lord, despite my record, I thank You that You have made me a champion!

Insider Information

Romans 8:28 (KJV) And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

28

Most of us remember the high-profile court case of Martha Stewart involving illegal stock trading based on insider information. It was illegal because she used information that gave her an unfair advantage over the rest of the public. That advantage was against the law and she spent five months in jail because of that “insider information.”     Well, we have a different type of insider information that is not only legal, but essential for our life as a Christian. The insider information that we have is that God is working all things together for our good. Knowing that and believing that gives us an advantage in life. While others are worried, we can remain calm. While others may lose hope, we can have our hope renewed. While others may be ruled by fear, we can have courage. While others will give up, we can keep going. While others are speaking doubt, we can Speak Life! As Christians, we have the advantage of Divine “insider information.” God has information about your life and He is using all that information for your good. That is what gives us a peace that passes understanding. So, we can Speak Life regardless of the situation because we know that things will work out in our favor! Read the Bible today and benefit from some Divine insider information.

Day 16

Lord, today help me to hold on to the truth of Your Word.

Rain or Shine

Psalm 146:6 (NLT)  He made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He keeps every promise forever.

6

Summer is one of my favorite times of year. Cookouts, outdoor concerts, water sports and so much more are things that I enjoy. But summer also brings rain and sometimes that rain can cancel even the best summer events. So, I love it when events are “Rain or Shine.” Regardless of what the weather is, the event will go on. Well God’s promises are even better! Regardless of what life throws at you, regardless of what happens, God is able to carry out His promises in your life. The Bible is full of examples of God’s ability to work through imperfect situations and imperfect people to bring about perfect success! God will do His part, but what about you? Are you willing to push through the rain, push through the difficulties and hold onto God’s promises? I encourage you to do just that! Many times, our success, our joy, and our blessing is on the other side of some rain. You have to believe that even when things seem darkest, the sun will shine again. So, no matter what happens in your life, God is still working it out for good. Rain or shine, God is faithful to keep His promises!  Lord, I am thankful that Your promises are Rain or Shine. Nothing can stop Your will in my life.

Day 17

Lord, despite my record, I thank You that You have made me a champion!

You are what you speak

Luke 6:45 (The VOICE) It’s the same with people. A person full of goodness in his heart produces good things; a person with an evil reservoir in his heart pours out evil things. The heart overflows in the words a person speaks; your words reveal what’s within your heart. 45

How often do you say what you mean and mean what you say? How often do you listen to the words that come out of your mouth? The Bible says, “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” We live in a society where seemingly everyone has something to say. Many times, before the words are uttered from the mouth of an individual or a statement given on behalf of a group, they are posted all over social media. Here’s the issue: In our highly technical society, often times what one says, and how it is interpreted, doesn’t align. We have heard it repeatedly, “My words were misconstrued,” or “That’s not what I said,” or “Fake News.” As followers of Jesus Christ, if our hearts are full of goodness, we will produce good things. When our words reflect our heart and our godly character, they provide a snapshot of what lies within us. When was the last time you did a heart check? Purpose out of the goodness of your heart to say what you mean and mean what you say. Speak Life! Allow the Power within to overflow in the words you speak! Speak words of encouragement, words of hope, words of peace, and words of joy. The Bible says, “the power of life and death lies in the tongue.” Decide today to live! Let the love and joy of your heart overflow in the words you speak into your life as well as the lives of others.

Day 18

Almighty God, as I Speak Life today, allow my words to produce good things (good fruit).

Put out the Fire

Proverbs 26:20 (NIV) Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down.

20

Forest fires can become one of the fastest and deadliest moving natural phenomenon. It is most often caused by one’s careless act of leaving a fire burning where there is an abundance of wood. If all the elements are present in high winds and dry ground, a forest fire can spread rapidly and within a matter of seconds, it can destroy land, homes, and even lives in its path. Well, the spreading of gossip is like having wood continually placed in the path of a fire. This scripture in Proverbs reminds us that in removing wood, the fire begins to go out and so it is with the carrying of gossip. At some point and time, we all have been guilty of carrying something we heard to someone else only to have that word of gossip move throughout our workplace, our school and yes, even the church, like a burning fire being fueled by the constant application of wood. As children of God, we must become conscious of how easy it is to become a part of gossip and destructive conversations. The words spoken from our lips have caused catastrophic destruction or pain to another. The next time someone brings to you or you even consider carrying a gossiping word, remove the burning wood of your tongue and put that fire out before it begins.

Day 19

Lord, as I Speak Life today, help me to change my conversations and to not spread gossip.

Pour Responsibly

Proverbs 15: 1-2 (NKJV) A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. 1

I remember growing up, as a child one of the things I used to love

was when it was dinner time and I had to do my job. My job wasn’t the cooking just yet; my job was the pouring of the drinks for

everyone. As a child we always had my favorite drink – yup that is

right, Kool-Aid. I loved all kinds of Kool-Aid: the blue, the orange… but the best was the red. After my mother or grandfather would

finish cooking, they would call me to pour the drinks. As I poured I

had to be careful not to pour too much or too little in anyone’s cup.

However, I also wanted to make sure I poured enough in my cup as well, since I was the one in charge of pouring.

This Scripture reminds me of my childhood role as a pourer. The text says that a soft answer can turn away wrath but that a harsh

word stirs up anger. All of this comes from the power of the mouth. If we are fools then we pour out foolishness. As Christians it is

important for us to realize that while we are not responsible for what others say or think, we are responsible for our response to them.

We cannot allow the words from others to dictate our actions or our

words. Instead we must decide to pour out words that reflect being a Christian and being someone who trusts and believes in God.

Today pick your words responsibly and only allow those that reflect being a child of God to pour out. Speak Life over your life and the lives of others.

Day 20

Lord, as I Speak Life today, help me to pour out Your Word responsibly to those around me.

Your asWords a Preservative

6

Colossians 4:6 (NKJV) Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

The Greek word in this scripture for salt is “Halas.” This word is only used four times in the Bible in this form and literally means “salt with which food is seasoned.” I don’t cook much, but one thing I do know about cooking is that salt can help food taste better and it can also preserve food so that it lasts longer. The Bible is being clear that when we speak it should be like “seasoning” with salt in order to know how to answer one another. As we continue to Speak Life today we must be aware of the fact that our words should season the conversation. Our words can add flavor and add a level of taste to the conversation that wouldn’t normally be there if we hadn’t decided to use those words. Think about the last meal you had where you used salt. I am pretty sure you could have made it through the meal without the salt, unless the cooking was really bad. However, the salt added something that didn’t just impact the one item you seasoned with salt – it impacted the whole meal. Your words today, if you decide to use words seasoned with God’s salt, will have the opportunity to impact not just the conversation, but someone’s whole meal. It is important to note that every conversation is seasoned, but the question becomes: is yours being seasoned with salt? Today season up your words not just for your sake but for the sake of those with whom you will speak. Do this because you want them to have a better conversation and a better life. Speak Life!

Day 21

Lord, as I Speak Life today, help me to season my words so that others around me are empowered.
