Photography By Colorbox Photographers

This year has been a busy one with the release of the Cloverdale issue and Bridal issue, both which took a lot of creativity and energy. For this issue, we each decided to share our favorite features. Although it runs a close race with “the LIST” because I love meeting new people, my favorite thing has to be the advertisements. So much goes into building the perfect ad. Seeing it all come together to showcase the style, products, services and promotions of each advertiser is rewarding and definitely my favorite part of this issue.

-Kim This issue’s Retreats Within Reach feature has me itching for a weekend getaway with my closest girls, and lucky for us, we don’t have to go far! You can bet that before we leave, we’ll be flipping through Reply Yes, Color Me Summer, for the brightest, boldest and best looks to add a little color into our trip. Anyone who knows me knows that I love nothing more than a pink pout with a fun summer dress, my inspiration for the article!

-Jeannie Because I work downtown, I have a heart for all of the events and activities that take place on the River. I am looking forward to the 4th of July Festivities. Federal Expression is one of my favorite local bands and they will be performing. Check out Now Hear This and make your plans for a staycation right here in the River Region!

-Mallory

After being cooped up all winter because of the polar vortex, I am more than ready to be out and about on the town! Since I personally put the calendar of events together, it has given me a new appreciation for all that Montgomery has to offer. I was most excited to learn that the Riverbend Brew Fest happens to be right after my graduation at Huntingdon as if it was planned just for me! Hope to see you there!

-Kate This issue comes in my second year of editing at RSVP, and it never fails that with every new issue there is something I learn from a writer’s article; some event, place, or person making waves in the River Region that I was previously unaware of. I am blessed to work with an incredible team and group of writers who make this possible. I hope that in this issue you find some new information as well about what’s happening in Montgomery, whether it be the new Farmers Market activities at EastChase, the talents of three siblings in Cloverdale, or a local band that is finding a huge following.

NEVER, EVER BUY A 65-INCH, 1080P, LED, INTERNET READY, FLAT-PANEL CENTERPIECE FOR YOUR HOME THEATER SYSTEM WHERE YOUR WIFE BUYS HER

UNDERWEAR.

Research tells us trust is an enormous factor when it comes to where people shop for major appliances and electronics. How much, for instance, would you trust the 18-year-old who just stepped over from the shoe department to explain the intricacies of a home theater system to you? At Cohens, you’ll fortunately never have to face that problem. The average tenure at Cohens is 11.5 years. Which means our experienced staff probably has answers to questions you don’t even have yet. And wouldn’t that be comforting if you’re ever in the market for a major home appliance or home theater product? Cohens. Everything you need. Including the experience to know exactly what that is.

We deliver confidence.

BILTMORE ESTATE

W

ith three floors and a basement that house 250 rooms, the Biltmore House on Biltmore Estate is the largest privately-owned house in the United States. This French Renaissance Chateau was built between 1889 and 1895 by George Vanderbilt as a country retreat for his family in Asheville, N.C. Inside this mansion there are 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces, as well as a library with over 10,000 volumes, an indoor pool and bowling alley, and original art from masters like PierreAuguste Renoir and John Singer Sargent. Nearly every item on display in the mansion is from the original collection belonging to George and Edith Vanderbilt. While a tour of the mansion is certainly reason enough to visit the Biltmore Estate, there are many other attractions that lure guests to the grounds. The Biltmore Estate Wine Company was established in 1983, and in 1985 the winery opened to visitors. Today the winery is located in Antler Hill Village on the estate, where guests can enjoy a tour and wine tastings. This charming and picturesque village also has an outdoor adventure center that offers activities such as hiking, fly fishing, horseback riding, biking and river float trips. At the Antler Hill Village farm, guests can travel back in time when they visit the barn and watch blacksmiths, woodworkers and other craftsmen offering demonstrations. Farm-friendly animals, an old-fashioned mercantile shop and a Carolina smokehouse can also be found on this part of the estate. The 8,000 acres of ground are also home to a 34

vast array of both formal and informal gardens, designed by famed American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, for visitors to stroll. George Vanderbilt’s dream of building and inn on his land finally came to fruition in 2001, when the Inn on Biltmore Estate officially opened. Offering five different styles of guest rooms and five suites for visitors to choose from, the Inn aims to present its guests with the same hospitality that Vanderbilt himself did. The Spa at the Inn has numerous treatments and packages to choose from, and there is both a formal dining room and the more casual Library Lounge located at the Inn. There are several other dining options for visitors in Antler Hill Village and at the Biltmore House and Gardens, ranging from upscale restaurants to taverns to an ice cream parlor. Want to decorate in the Vanderbilt style? Then you will want to stop by either the Carriage House or Traditions, two of the many shops on the estate. You can also browse through an old-fashioned toy store, a book store, a wine shop, and a store devoted entirely to Christmas. In 2014, the Biltmore Estate is open to visitors from March 20 until November 6. Whether you are looking for a romantic weekend, family-friendly vacation or planning a wedding or corporate event, there is something for everyone on these 8,000 acres nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

LUKE LINDGREN Cinematographer and owner of Luke Lindgren Cinematography, Luke Lindgren has lived all over the country working in photography and video production. Originally from Hartville, Ohio, Luke got his start in the cinematography and photography industry while living in Colorado. Through his association with a group of professional snowboarders, he started working with a Coloradobased company making snowboard films. He eventually branched out into action-sports photography before moving to Alabama and changing the direction of his company to wedding and commercial video production. Luke attributes most of his success his wife Katie. He says that she “has always fully believed and supported me in everything I do. We have moved several times across the country and re-establishing a business in a new area can be challenging”. Despite these challenges, with the support of the Montgomery community, Luke has been successful in his business. Local artists such as Kim Box, Nick Drollette and Josh Moates have been extremely influential and helped to connect him to others in the industry. Luke says that his favorite thing about Montgomery is the Old Cloverdale area. He enjoys the shops, restaurants, old homes and the welcoming sense of community that the area has to offer. When Luke isn’t working on his stunning videos, he loves skateboarding, snowboarding, campfires, music, being adventurous and spending quality time with his wife Katie and dog, Otis.

ALYSSA HAMM Although she grew up moving around Georgia and Florida, Aly Hamm, the owner and designer of SawGirl, considers Montgomery, Ala. home. She began her training and education in building material production 15 years ago with Blue Circle Materials. After moving to Montgomery in 2005, Aly and her husband Chris began renovating properties for resale and rentals. While flipping these properties she began to notice how much material and money was wasted on even the smallest building project. This realization inspired her start repurposing old materials into beautiful and useful pieces of furniture. Her first real project was a hutch built from a pile of wood that sat in her yard for four years. Aly says that this piece is still her favorite today because it was a labor of love, a teacher and an inspiration to take her work to the next level. From there, Aly began working with old doors, sinks, windows, hinges and any materials that she thought could be repurposed into something interesting. With encouragement from her family, friends and the community, she began to participate in various contests and shows which ultimately allowed her to display her work in her shop in Old Cloverdale. Aly says that overcoming obstacles in her career and personal life have led to her transformation with SawGirl. After facing rejection and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, she chose to pick herself up and force her way back. Aly attributes much of her success to her husband Chris, who has supported her on every project and idea along with their three children, Hannah, Ryleigh and Griffin.

LATOYA MICHELLE BROWN “I love seeing other people succeed. Mentoring and watching our young people grow and believe in themselves is a feeling that nothing else compares to, except having once been that young person yourself,” says Latoya Brown, the owner of Dorothy Alexa and author of the book “The 411 on Waiting and Dating”. She has spent her career pursuing both of her passions: fashion and mentoring young women. A native of Prattville, Ala., Latoya started her career with an internship at the world-renowned fashion house of Stella McCartney, interning in the London office. She later felt a calling to make a difference in the lives of young people, and so she packed her bags and moved to Ghana where she volunteered in an orphanage, then spent time in Cambodia volunteering with the Peace Corps. Upon returning to Prattville, Latoya opened the doors of Dorothy Alexa, a chic and inspiring lifestyle brand that celebrates young women’s worth. Along with a successful book, Dorothy Alexa boasts an online boutique that features everything from trendy jewelry to motivational T-shirts. Latoya’s goal with Dorothy Alexa is to remind young girls that they are more precious than jewels and do not need the validation of others to be confident and successful. Latoya attributes much of her success to her mother, who pushed her to be and believe better, and always reminded her that “this too shall pass”. Latoya says that her biggest obstacle was realizing that she didn’t have to be a statistic. She believes that no matter what your background, having faith and working hard for yourself can change your path. In her free time, Latoya loves traveling the world, but always enjoys coming home to Alabama.

Dancing from the age of three, the 5’9’’ powerhouse has received multiple titles such as “Dancer of the Year” and “Top 20 to Watch.” Her work includes Nike and Pepsi commercials, music videos, the Pittsburg Steelers, Disney, Carnival Cruise Lines, Six Flags, and work a back-up dancer for the Black Eyed Peas. While receiving her bachelor’s degree in dance from Point Park University in Pittsburg, Penn., Kylee danced professionally and held faculty positions for multiple companies throughout the United States as well as internationally. In 2012, Kylee received a master’s degree in education from Troy University where she is now employed as an admission specialist. Kylee is also the jazz teacher for Alabama River Region Ballet and on staff for VIP Dance, a traveling dance competition company for young dancers which provides a philanthropic aspect through a “Dancing for Charity” program. Kylee says she would not be who she is today without the support and love of her parents. She is a multifaceted educator because of her passion, enthusiasm and charismatic personality. In her spare time, Kylee enjoys spending time with her boyfriend Robby, who she says is her best friend, and their four-legged babies: Rio, Kendall and Kain. Kylee is also an active member of the community with involvement in EMERGE, the Arthritis Foundation, the United Way, and the Montgomery Arts Council. She also serves as an Ambassador for the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. Kylee says, “Montgomery needs more educators that genuinely care about the future of our community and I am ready to take on the challenge of making our community a more positive, well-rounded, diverse one, whether inside a university setting or a dance studio. I plan on changing the world one student at a time.”

JW GODWIN “As a lawyer, I can do things to make people’s lives better that they cannot do themselves,” explains John Warren (JW) Godwin, a partner at the Law Offices of Troy King. Originally from Greenville, Ala., JW’s favorite thing about Montgomery is its history.“When I wander around Montgomery, the sense of history is never far away,” says JW. One of nine children, JW believes growing up in a large family helped prepare him to be successful in life. His parents instilled in him independence and a strong faith in God. JW and his wife KC have three daughters: Olivia, Zoe and Collins, and are expecting their fourth child in November of this year. They both feel there is no greater job or responsibility than that of being a good parent. Zoe, their middle child, was adopted from Ethiopia. JW and KC love children and hope to continue to adopt and add to their family. JW feels the obstacle he struggles the most with is self-confidence. “From the beginning of my career in the Air Force, I was reminded daily that there is no room for self-doubt,” he explains. “When I joined the Attorney General’s staff in a high profile role, once again, I had to be confident and right.” Surrounded by others who encouraged and helped him to overcome his self-doubts, JW has seen great success in his career and personal life. As members of Pike Road Crossfit, JW and his wife enjoy staying healthy and active while also having fun.

STEPHEN WHITEHEAD Stephen Christopher Whitehead, the Chief Information Officer for The Center for Pain of Montgomery, P.C., has ten years of experience in the IT field. A 2007 graduate of Huntingdon College with a Bachelor of Science in computer science, Stephen is interested in truly understanding how things work. “I get the most satisfaction from making people’s lives easier through technology and workflow analysis, both for our staff but most importantly for our patients.” A linebacker on Huntingdon College’s inaugural football team, Stephen’s competitiveness didn’t initially translate well from the football field to the workplace. “I had to learn how to ‘win’ in an office setting and learned that this involved totally different tactics and skills,” explains Stephen. That competitive nature has certainly helped with his success. He has called Montgomery home for over 20 years, but comes from a very diverse heritage. Born in Athens, Greece, Stephen’s heritage is very important to him and he is active in the local Greek community. Stephen says the values encompassing the Greek culture, along with his wife’s belief in his abilities are what push him to excel. His community involvement also includes participation in the March of Dimes, the Dragon Boat races and WAKA kickball league. He is married to Raquel Whitehead and they have a 4-year-old son named Knox and 16-month-old identical twin boys named Costandinos and Chandler. Along with spending time with his family, Stephen also enjoys being outdoors either hunting, fishing, camping or introducing his sons to organized sports.

DUNCAN KIRKWOOD Duncan Kirkwood is the Alabama State Director of the Black Alliance for Educational Options. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Duncan moved to Alabama to attend Alabama State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in public relations and served as Student Body President. After graduation, he worked for City Councilor, Tracy Larkin, as Chief of Staff for the Montgomery City Council District 3. Duncan also traveled the country as a motivational speaker for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Duncan attributes his success to those who have inspired and motivated him throughout his career, along with his faith in God. His mentors Ibrahim Lee, Sheyann Christburg, Councilor Larkin, Senator Ross and his parents have pushed Duncan to challenge himself and to never apologize for being exactly who he is. Duncan says that the best part of his career is the knowledge that he is personally helping to change the trajectory of the lives of thousands of children. He works relentlessly to educate low-income families on scholarship options that could provide their child with high quality educational options. In addition to his work with BAEO, Duncan is the Battalion S1 Senior Human Resources Officer for the 145 HHD Chemical Battalion. He also teaches chess to students at Southlawn Middle School and works with various volunteer organizations that promote voter registration and the importance of a high school education. In his free time, Duncan enjoys teaching soccer and chess to his son Elijah, traveling, and playing sports and classical piano.

Annie feels blessed beyond her years to be a part of Montgomery’s desire to sustain an amazing city and to work with its great people. A University of Alabama graduate, Annie worked for Lowder New Homes as their in-house designer from 2006-2007, Goodwyn Mills and Cawood as Project Managing interior designer for all RSA and hospitality style projects from 2007-2011, and Chambless King Architects as Director of Interior Design from 2011 to 2013. FARM to FIT

By Katy Sulhoff

Spring has been a tease. Cold temps continued creeping in, but with a little luck, by the time this article is published summer will have moved in for good. Motivation wanes during the winter months to tie on tennis shoes and work up a sweat, but the warm weather brings it out in all of us again. And starting in May, The Shoppes at EastChase are offering plenty of incentives to get you moving!

RSVP MAY/JUNE 2014

May 24th is the kickoff of the Farmers Market in The Shoppes at EastChase, and this year they are celebrating ten years. In that time, the market has grown from just ten to over 30 vendors and evolved to offer more than homegrown produce. “We’ve always wanted to promote healthy living,” says Vickie Lawrence, Marketing Manager for The Shoppes. When it comes to healthy living, smart eating and exercise go hand in hand. After a successful trial run in 2013 of adding yoga to the Farmers Market, Lawrence decided to expand the fitness offerings to Crossfit classes and Zumba for kids. It’s a great opportunity for anyone who wants to be active or just try something new, free of charge. You don’t have to be a pro to participate, as instructors are on hand to guide you through the exercises. When you’re done, you can continue your focus on whole health and attend a Wellness Seminar by Earth Fare. Cooking demonstrations by Williams-Sonoma will also be available and, of course, plenty of produce brought to you by local growers. The 10th annual Farmers Market is from 7 a.m. until noon, rain or shine, every Saturday until August 30th, and it is located in the northeast parking lot at EastChase in front of Earth Fare.

What you need to know: • Fitness classes and Wellness Seminars are offered on select dates in June, July, and August, so be sure to check the schedule online at www.theshoppesateastchase.com. • Cooking demos are May 24 & 31; June 14 & 21; and August 2 & 30. • Market Preview is May 17th • Grand Opening is May 24th

Sophia European Day Spa | Mind & Body

ou may be one of those people who has never had the pleasure of receiving a professional massage, or taken the time for a facial or other beneficial skin treatment. Or maybe you have, but only on vacation and never in Montgomery. If either of those statements describes you (and this goes for both men and women), you are missing out. Because tucked away on the backside of the Cloverdale business district, on Woodley Road near the fivepoints intersection, there are two Montgomery gems: Mind & Body and Sophia European Day Spa. As the owners of both businesses, siblings Foad, Ali and Sophia Araiinejad have attracted a loyal client base of individuals seeking rest, relaxation, beauty treatment, stress relief, and so much more.

At Mind & Body, Foad and Ali are self-described “medical and sports massage specialists.” In each of their private massage rooms, you will see walls covered with anatomy charts and instructional massage literature, while relaxing music is softly playing in the background. Foad and Ali offer a wide range of massage choices, including (but not limited to) the Mind & Body therapeutic massage (their classic and customizable massage), the table Thai massage (a focus on pressure points), the cupping massage (suctioncreating cups used in Chinese medicine), Indian scalp massage (for the head and face), and the Lomilomi massage (a form of Hawaiian massage), just to name a few. The actress Jessica Lange was a frequent visitor of Mind and Body in 2003 when she was in Alabama filming “Big Fish”; after her first massage she declared

connections that Foad’s treatment was better than any she had received in Los Angeles. Aside from massages, Foad and Ali also offer hydrotherapy and Ayurvedic treatments, including their original Mind & Body Mango Sugar Glaze, a soothing body scrub derived from raw sugars and jojoba oil, among other natural products, that rejuvenate and moisturize your skin. For those of you living on the other side of the Eastern bypass, Foad and Ali offer their services at the Wynlakes Country Club on certain days of the week.

Foad also combines his massage skills with the Universal Art of Self Discovery to empower individuals looking to release blocked negative energy in their bodies. Universal Art of Self Discovery (UAFSD) is an approach to relieving physical and emotional pain and suffering through a combination of ancient and modern techniques like positive psychology, cognitive behavioral psychology, creative expression and release through art, compassion exercises, prayer, meditation, visualization, synchronicity (grouping effects by meaning), symbolism, principles of natural law, and collaborative learning. UAFSD is beneficial in the treatment of chronic pain, chronic illness, depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, grief and loss, obesity, and post traumatic stress disorder. For those licensed massage therapists, professional counselors and social workers looking to learn more about UAFSD, Foad is offering a 12 credit continuing education workshop on October 25 and 26 at Wynlakes Country Club. When speaking about the Art Therapy room in Mind and Body, and the work that is done in there, Foad told us that he has worked with many individuals who suffered from chronic pain.

Some had seen medical doctors, psychiatrists, accupuncturists, or even gone to Foad and Ali for massage therapy – and in the end, when they finally tried the Art Therapy that is a part of Mind & Body, that is when their pain gradually began to diminish. Sophia, of the eponymous spa, has over 25 years of experience in skin care and treatments, body treatments, waxing, makeup application and therapeutic massage. She was the first aesthetician to be licensed in both Alabama and Florida. When you walk into her spa, you are instantly calmed by the soothing and tranquil atmosphere and relaxing music. Sophia’s menu includes a classic facial, various peels (fruit acid, micro derma and chemical), eye treatments, hair cut, classic massage, bacial (back facial), cellulite treatment, body wrap, self-tanning, manicure, pedicure and permanent make-up application. Sophia is assisted by her daughter Melissa, and once a week by Dr. Nancy Haring, who offers med spa treatments such as Botox and Juvederm. There are many pampering packages to choose from at Sophia, including full-day or half-day packages, or ones with group rates. Inside Sophia’s spa, customers will find a wall with a vast array of products, including the OBAGI skin care line. One of the newest products offered by Sophia is the Dermapen, a fractional micro-needling device that uses a vibrating, stamp-like motion to deliver effects such as skin tightening, lifting, lessening of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as minimization of pore size and acne or sun spots. Many aestheticians consider the Dermapen to be one of the most effective tools used today in skin care. The dedication these three siblings have to their craft is evident in the sheer number of clients they have, some who have been regular visitors for a decade or longer. Foad, Ali and Sophia go above and beyond to ensure you have the best possible experience, and always leave feeling better than you arrived. If you’re not already a client, you should consider making an appointment for one of their many services.

fter the release and popularity of RSVP’s special edition on Old Cloverdale, we continued the excitement by hosting a Cloverdale Pub Crawl on April 12. With its two vibrant entertainment and shopping districts with numerous restaurants and shops that include art galleries and an independent arts cinema, it’s no wonder people of all ages continue to consider it one of coolest locations in town. Pub Crawl participants included The Capri Theatre, El Rey Burrito Lounge, LeRoy, Sinclair’s, True, Pine Bar, Bud’s and 1048 Jazz and Blues Club. The City trolley made going

back and forth between the two entertainment districts of Cloverdale convenient and fun. Pine Bar stayed busy from beginning to end and is always a popular choice with its huge beer selection and friendly bar staff. Their special for the night was the Rammer Jammer that ran out quickly due to demand. The Capri Theatre served beer and wine (the only theatre in Montgomery that serves alcohol) and offered free popcorn to guests while showing classic trailers all evening long. Next door to the Capri, El Rey Burrito Lounge and LeRoy set up shop in the alley where they served discounted margaritas and pork tacos.

With live music by Mac Cone, Sinclair’s was a great stop for people who wanted a light bite in lieu of dinner as the appetizers were discounted, the drinks were strong, and the party was on. Bud’s was slammed all night while pub crawlers enjoyed their specials and played pool and shuffle board while mingling until the wee hours of the morning. At 1048 Jazz & Blues, The Franklyn Roosevelt Band had the crowd dancing all night long. The bartenders were slinging drinks like Tom Cruise in “Cocktail” to keep up with the crowd that stayed three deep at the bar most of the evening. 1048 proved to be the late night stop where many crawled in and crawled out with stories to tell.

shared the same love for the same bands...our harp player, Will Gordon was also there, so we exchanged info with Brandon and planned a jam session. RSVP: How did the rest of the band become involved? Patrick: After one afternoon, in what we now call The Laboratory, we realized that that we had something special. We invited axe man, Buddy Barnes, over to the very next jam, and the result was immediate bonding through shared musical preferences and some pretty tasty four-part harmonies. The rest is Federal Expression history. We are truly blessed to have such amazing musicians, like Freddie Smith, Trey Evans, Bart Morgan, Will Hudson, and The Legend Sam Williams in our band. RSVP: What band would you say has most informed your sound? Brandon: I think it’s safe to say the strongest bond we have is our love of the Grateful Dead. The range of music those guys played was phenomenal. From blues to gospel, they did it all

and made it their own. Listening and learning from the Dead through the years, inspires the urge and need to play live music. We just love making music...it doesn’t really matter what genre. RSVP: Besides the Dead, who else influenced your sound? Brandon: Phish, the Doors and acid rock in general. While we enjoy their influence, we don’t really want to emulate any of them, we just want to use their formula of writing and playing because it is so free and liberating. Patrick: For me, it’s the 3Ds as I call them: Dead, Dylan, Doors. RSVP: How did you get involved in the Fourth of July Event at Riverfront Park? Brandon: We wrote a song called “Streets of Montgomery” that is on our upcoming album. After playing it a few times at our shows around the city, people began to request and love the song. Denise Welch, and the good folks that plan all of the wonderful events in Montgomery, heard the song and came

to see us play. They thought it would be a good idea to give Montgomery a real concert with a true local band. We are thrilled and honored to be a part of Montgomery’s 4th of July celebration. RSVP: What does performing at events like this mean to you and the band? Patrick: No matter how much we practice in the Laboratory, we truly only mature and become more cohesive by playing live music. We will use this opportunity to continue to grow as a unit, and continue our quest for the perfect jam. Mainly, we are just thrilled to play to the people of our amazing city. Especially on a day where everyone feels the excitement of our country’s birthday, and lets all worldly issues go. On the 4th of July, we are all family… Blue Sullivan is a Montgomery native, regular contributor to RSVP and author of the book, “Your Ex-Boyfriend Will Hate This”. We stopped by for lunch one sunny day in April and took advantage of the outdoor patio seating (there are also several tables inside). The “daily lunch menu” was limited, but still had 68

plenty of variety -- hamburger, rib eye steak sandwich, BL“G”T (bacon, lettuce, and fried green tomato), chef salad, and a lunch special (that day, it was fried catfish with a choice of sides). I ordered the BL“G”T with fries. The first thing you notice about the BL“G”T is the emphasis on the “B” – BACON. Several layers of thick, perfectly cooked (not too soft, not too crispy) bacon sat between two fried green tomatoes topped with lettuce and black pepper mayo, all on thick Texas toast. Served with some ranch dipping sauce (recommended by the waiter), it made for a tasty sandwich. The ranch dipping sauce was also a nice addition to the crinklecut fries. My wife ordered a number of side items for her meal: coleslaw, baked beans and banana pudding. A

rather picky eater, she is not usually known for her appetite – but she cleaned the plate and noted that all three sides were delicious. While eating, we couldn’t help but notice the food other guests seated near us were enjoying. The couple at the table next to ours had each ordered the hamburger (a staple at the Butcher Block), and when asked how it tasted, they confirmed our suspicion that it “tasted great” and added that it was “what we always order”. I made a mental note to choose that the next time I stop by for lunch. After we finished lunch, we spent some time walking around the store. The shelves are full of beers and wine, as well as other fit-for-foodie items. Alabama beers, like Good

People and Back Forty, are well represented, as are other popular labels like Fat Tire, Abita and Magic Hat. In addition to wine, the shop also boasts a good selection of champagnes. The actual “butcher shop” of the Butcher Shop features some great items too – Conecuh hickory smoked bacon, Capps jalapeno and cheese sausage, boudin, jalapeno poppers (peppers stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon), as well as various steak cuts– New York strip, porterhouse, ribeye, T-bone, and baconwrapped filet. The store has other specialty items like “Jessica’s Bloody Mary Mix” (with a note to add a shot of tequila, in addition to the vodka) as well as their own “Butcher Block” label food items, dressings, seasonings, rubs, and sauces, including fiesta jalapenos, pickled asparagus, black pepper ketchup, merlot steak sauce, parmesan peppercorn dressing, and Phil’s course rub, just to name a few. The cakes by Cake Designs (Italian Cream and Strawberry on the day we visited) were a pleasant surprise, as The Butcher Block is the only place you can buy them other than the actual Cake Designs bakery in Montgomery. While the Butcher Block has focused on lunch, the dinner service will be picking up with the newly-added later hours on Thursdays and Fridays (till 9 p.m.) as well as live music on the patio for the upcoming summer months. If you want to grab dinner on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night, you will need to get there before it closes at 7 p.m. When she’s not helping out in the kitchen at the Butcher Shop, Tammy is busy running her catering business, A Catered Affair. You’ve likely enjoyed her great food at a local wedding or event (and may not have even known). Available for purchase in the store are a variety of her casseroles, which are great for stocking your freezer with to pull out on nights you may not feel like cooking. The Butcher Block is a great and much-needed addition to the Pike Road community, and also worth the relativelyshort drive for those of us living in Montgomery.
