How to Use

g n ti c e r r o C r Colo p u e k a M Looking fresh makes us feel like we look our best, right? From acne to dark circles under our eyes to age spots, birthmarks, or rashes, we all have blemishes on our face we want to conceal. You may get a little lost by the various shades of colorcorrecting makeup, so we have created an easy-to-follow guide so you can reference which color you need for different issues.

spots of discoloration are annoying. Orange hides these issues for darker skin tones.

Yellow Where age spots, broken capillaries, or bruising (perhaps you’re on blood thinner) are noticeable, you need to choose yellow. It conceals purple or blue hues.

Pink

How do they work, you ask? Remember the rules of the classic color wheel, where the colors across the circle complement one another? Well, the opposite colors cancel one another out with color-correcting makeup.

Maybe you’re a new mom or just work overtime all of the time and need to cover up those side effects of exhaustion and fatigue. If you’re suffering from dark circles under your eyes or sallow skin, pink is for you.

Purple

Green

This hue works to hide those yellow undertones (such as bruising, dull skin, or uneven dark spots).

If you battle red, inflamed skin, green will help you cover irritation such as rashes, acne, or rosacea. It will also help you hide red birthmarks.

Blue If you have used self-tanning lotions or have sun spots from sunning on a regular basis, blue is the hue for you. It also works to conceal hyperpigmentation flaws.

Orange

No one is perfect. We all have flaws and blemishes. But if we can make a few of them less noticeable, we can smile a little bigger. By Rebecca Austin

10 Steps to a

Happier YOU

Ever wondered how happy people are so happy? They have a few traits that help them approach life differently than their cynical counterparts. Happy people… 1. Wake up early. They get plenty of rest, allowing

them to wake up in plenty of time to enjoy their morning.

2. Have an attitude of gratitude. They are

grateful for their environment, the provisions they are blessed with, and cherish the people in their life.

3. Avoid negativity. Depressing news? They don’t watch it. Belittling gossip? They don’t participate in it. They treat it like the plague and stay away.

4. Don’t Give up. Whether it’s using dental floss to sew a button back on or making the best of a bad day, happy folks “grin and bear it” and keep on keepin’ on. 5. Stop to smell the roses. Cheerful people have learned that life is precious. Each moment is to be cherished, and not taken for granted.

6. Be Confident. Confidence… Happier people are

more confident. They believe in themselves and their abilities and they just go for it.

7. Smile. They know how to turn that frown upside

down! Happy folks can smile as they watch a bird attack a squirrel or at the simplicity - yet, magnificence - of the sunrise of a brand-new day. It’s the little things that bring them joy.

8. See imperfections as perfection. Mix-

matched furniture, two different socks, a zit on their nose - these things don’t matter to a happy person.

9. Meditate. Carving out special time each day to

simply be is crucial for peace and joy.

10. Get involved. Whether they are volunteering at the local soup kitchen or cleaning their church, running a marathon, or hiking or riding their bicycle, upbeat people are getting those happy endorphins pumping! Don’t worry, just be happy! By Rebecca Austin 4 • My Life 360 | Winter Holidays 2016/2017 www.MyLife360mag.com.

How to Achieve

Great Skin By Rebecca Austin

“Beautiful skin requires commitment, not a miracle.” - Erno Laszlo

4. Love your skin with a soothing mask to enhance collagen production and tone.

Surrounded by a toxic environment, chemical-laden foods and products, what is a woman to do in order to enjoy beautiful skin? Work at it! Just like anything else in life, great skin requires time, dedication, and persistence.

In addition, drink plenty of water - daily. Hydration is pure gold to your skin. Also, get sufficient rest every night.

Follow these tips faithfully - and you’ll reap results!

Treat yourself to a day at the spa. Indulge in a full body sugar scrub, and/or enjoy a facial.

Daily Diligence A daily regimen is crucial for beautiful, healthy skin.

1. Wash your face every morning - before you bombard it with beauty products.

2. Apply moisturizer. 3. Be sure to use eco-friendly cleansers and makeup (coconut or olive oil are natural moisturizers).

Maintenance

No time for an appointment? No problem! At home, whip up a facial mask from ingredients you have in your kitchen. Apply that to your face and read or clean while it does its magic. That’s it! Take inventory of all of your beauty products and makeup, ensuring that they are still usable - and are not out of date, which can lead to nasty infections. Annually, visit a dermatologist for a skin screening.

4. Before bed, wash your face again to remove environmental toxins or dirt from the day.

Winning Weekly If taking care of yourself is a priority, you’ll find time each week to do the following.

1. Keep pillow cases, makeup brushes, and even your cell phone, clean and disinfected.

2. Exercise at least 3 times a week. Sweat those toxins out! 3. Exfoliate your skin to remove dead cells - out with the old, in with the new.

Your Skin Needs These Vitamins

Beauty

By Rebecca Austin

Free radicals wreak havoc on our bodies and are most evident when they reveal themselves through our skin, which is why it is so crucial that we take care of ourselves - inside and out. Environmental pollution and direct sunlight radiation both play a large role in causing free radicals to form inside our bodies and also causing harm to our skin health, outwardly. “A free radical is an atom or group of atoms that has an unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive.” -Dr. Diana Howard Second-hand smoke and other airborne pollutants (such as output from factories or chemicals or sprays) also cause free radicals, which is why an antioxidant-rich diet and vitamin regimen is crucial for healthy skin. Antioxidants are free radicals’ enemy, fighting

vessels near skin’s surface.

C - helps reduce the risk of skin cancer, as well as giving skin a supple, glowing appearance (where a deficiency causes a dull look).

D - with an abundance of antioxidants, this vitamin

protects skin from oxidative stress and blocks free radicals.

Along with the above vitamins, stay hydrated. By drinking plenty of water, you’re sure to nourish your skin from inside. Be sure to treat yourself to regular exercise as well as adequate rest, a vitamin-rich diet (as well as supplements as needed), and a natural beauty regimen to maintain the health and glow of your skin. Your body deserves to be well nourished. Love yourself first, and then you can love everyone else so much better.

Beauty Benefits of Vitamins: A - dermatitis, acne, and dry skin can plague you

without sufficient B vitamins intake, which strengthen your skin, tightening and moisturizing it, fighting aging, and boosts its overall appearance.

B - promotes natural collagen production, helps with

elasticity and firmness and maintains health of blood

How to Clean Makeup Brushes Beauty

By Rebecca Austin

Makeup brushes not only collect excess makeup over time, they collect dirt and dead skin cells. Even worse, the bristles are also a breeding ground for bacteria, which can irritate your skin and cause blemishes and infection. Much like our hair, the makeup brushes become dry over time. Olive oil is naturally thick and is a luxurious conditioner that softens the bristle fibers, while cleaning, and helps new life sprint into them .

juice), stirring well. You can do this with your finger, a tiny whisk, or a fork.

2. Swish brush(es) in cleaning solution and then allow

to soak for a few minutes.

3. When brushes are clean, rinse under running water,

gently separating bristle fibers to make sure there is no leftover makeup.

4. Dab brushes on clean towel and leave them there so they can air dry.

Note: If you don’t want to use lemon juice in the solution and choose to use the vinegar instead, you can dip your brushes in lemon water (or dab brush inside a lemon) after cleaning to give them a fresh scent, removing the vinegar smell. Emotional Intelligence Test By Abbie Tripplehorn

“Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others.” - Psychology Today Strong people skills. This is essentially what EI is. Those with strong people skills - or a high degree of EI - are considerate, steadfast individuals, who know how to listen well, remain calm in stressful situations, and are masters at managing their own emotions. They are also keenly aware of others’ feelings and are excellent problem solvers. Do you have a high EI score? Or, do you need emotional intelligence training? Ask yourself the following questions to find out. How do you overcome a weakness in your life? Is it easy for you to conquer? Do you rarely have negative feelings about others, as well as yourself? Is it easy for you to connect with people from any or all walks of life, those you have things in common with or those you don’t?

Do you normally deal with conflict seamlessly? If so, is it fairly easy for you to envision a positive end result? Can you easily motivate yourself - and stay motivated - in order to reach goals and accomplish daily duties? Do you rarely feel like an outcast, like no one understands you? Can you easily pick up the correct vibe signals people emit with their body language? Are you usually sensitive to the feelings and wellbeing of those around you? Is it rare for you to be astonished when you discover that you have caused someone frustration? Do you have access to the tools you need to effectively manage stress? Do you tap into them as needed and maintain stress levels in a healthy way? If you answered no to these questions, you will benefit greatly from emotional intelligence training. It’s never too late to improve yourself!

Wellness

5 Scents You Need in Your Life By Abbie Tripplehorn

“Essential oils have been used for therapeutic purposes for nearly 6,000 years. The ancient Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used them in cosmetics, perfumes, and drugs. Essential oils were also commonly used for spiritual, therapeutic, hygienic, and ritualistic purposes.” - University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC)

Citronella

Add several drops of this handy-dandy essential oil to a spray bottle filled with water for a natural alternative to bug spray. Spritz onto your body and lawn furniture and around the area where you’ll be sitting to combat pests.

Peppermint

Because it contains menthol esters, menthol, and menthone, peppermint is a popular ingredient in toothpaste, ice cream, soaps, chewing gum, shampoo, and tea blends. Peppermint’s medicinal uses include relieving headaches, soothing indigestion and nausea, calming intestinal spasms, and working to alleviate respiratory issues. It is also a fabulous addition to Epsom salts for a revitalizing foot soak.

Eucalyptus

As an antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, this essential oil works wonders as a decongestant, opening airways and relieving respiratory issues. With its antiseptic, antibacterial properties, it can also be used as an ingredient in homemade deodorant.

Citrus (Orange/Lemon/Grapefruit)

These fresh, fragrant oils are perfect as natural household cleaning agents. Add 20 drops of any of these oils to ½ cup of baking soda, stir, and keep in a jar for an enjoyable, clean scent throughout your home.

Lavender

Add this relaxing oil to your bath water, diffuser, or even massage a drop or two into your temples to help you wind down after a busy day. Lavender alleviates pain, enhances blood circulation, eliminates nervous tension, and helps sooth and wash away your stress. It also disinfects the skin and scalp. Everyone will enjoy the pleasant aroma of these medicinal oils, along with a happier mood!

Revitalizing Peppermint Foot Soak

Beauty

By Rebecca Austin

How to Prepare A Peppermint Foot Soak

What you’ll need: • 4 peppermint tea bags • 18-20 drops peppermint essential oil • ½ cup baking soda • 1 ½ cups Epsom bath salts • A mixing bowl and whisk

What you’ll do: Our feet are so abused and neglected. We stand on them, walk for hours, sometimes run, stub our toes on furniture, trip and at times, fall, spraining one or both feet. We wear shoes that are too tight or heels that are too tall. We brutally torture our feet and then wonder why they hurt so badly, we cannot sleep at night. This cycle of abuse must end! With just a few simple ingredients that can be found around the house, you can whip together an amazing foot bath in just minutes - and even make an extra batch or two for gifts. For a cheerful holiday gift that will be greatly appreciated, follow these instructions and pour the recipe into a jar. Have fun decorating the lid and make sure it seals tightly. Add a cute note card with directions on how to use the jar’s contents and finish it off with a vibrant ribbon. Place into a gift bag to bless overworked friends or family members.

• Put baking soda, Epsom salt, and essential oil into mixing bowl. • Cut teabags and pour tea into bowl. • Whisk together until combined well. • Pour into jar and seal tightly for use.

How to use: • Scoop out half a cup of mixture and put into a tub of hot water. • Slide your throbbing feet into this peppermint foot bath and let them soak for up to 20 minutes. • Remove feet and pat dry. • Enjoy your happy feet! This combination soothes tired, aching muscles and leaves them feeling refreshed - your feet will love you!

Addison’s Disease/ Adrenal Insufficiency

By Jill Smith

Have you ever heard of a disease with many different names?? Well, there is a specific disease with many different names and here they are: • Hypocortisolism • Hypoadrenalism • Primary Hypoadrenalism • Chronic Hypoadrenalism • Adrenocortical Hypofunction • Chronic Primary Congenital Addison’s Disease • Addison’s Disease • Primary Addison’s Disease

• Primary Adrenocortical Insufficiency (Disorder) To make it easy, I am going to use the term, Addison’s Disease or AD, to refer to all of the above terms. Addison’s Disease is a rare, life-threatening disease that occurs when your body doesn’t produce any or enough of a certain amount of specific hormones that are produced in the adrenal glands. AD occurs in all age groups and affects both males and females. It occurs in approximately 5-10 in 1,000,000 people. Addison’s Disease results when your adrenal glands are damaged or removed. The adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney. The hormones cortisol and aldosterone are in virtually every organ, cell and tissue in your body.

• Secondary Addison’s Disease

Corticosteroids are essential to sustain life. It is divided into two classes:

• Adrenal Insufficiency

Glucocorticoids including Cortisol

• Primary Adrenal Insufficiency

1. required for energy

• Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency

2. your inflammatory response

• Chronic Adrenal Insufficiency

3. helps the body respond to stress

• Hypoadrenocorticism Familial 22 • My Life 360 | Winter Holidays 2016/2017 www.MyLife360mag.com.

Mineralocorticoids including Aldosterone 1. Keep your blood pressure normal 2. Balance sodium and potassium

And Androgens are male sex hormones 1. Produced in both men and women 2. Provide sexual development in men 3. Influence muscle mass 4. Produce libido and a sense of well-being in men and women Each person with AD can have different symptoms. Here are some symptoms associated with AD: • Extreme fatigue • Weight loss and decreased appetite • Darkening of your skin (hyperpigmentation) • Low blood pressure, even fainting • Salt craving • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) • Nausea, diarrhea or vomiting • Abdominal pain • Muscle or joint pains • Irritability • Depression • Body hair loss • Sexual dysfunction in women • Sleep disturbances Cortisol production is regulated by the pituitary gland, located at the base of the skull, and is responsible for the hormone ACTH or adrenocorticotropic hormone which tells the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Primary Addison’s Disease or Primary Adrenal Insufficiency results when the adrenal glands are not working properly or have been removed and don’t receive the signal from the pituitary gland to produce cortisol and aldosterone.

Disease happens when the problem lies in the pituitary gland. The adrenal glands are working but never receive the signal due to problems in the pituitary gland. Dr. Thomas Addison’s first described this disease in London in 1855. At that time the most common cause was tuberculosis. This remained the leading cause until the middle of the 20th century when antibiotics reduced TB. Since then, the major cause of Addison’s Disease results from an autoimmune reaction in which the body’s own immune system makes antibodies against the cells of the adrenal cortex in the adrenal glands and slowly destroys them. That process can take months to years. Other less common causes of Addison’s Disease include chronic infections including certain fungal infections, breast cancer cells that invade the adrenal glands, AIDS, and the surgical removal of both adrenal glands as well as removal of the pituitary gland or tumor removal in the pituitary. The treatment for AD is to replace the missing cortisol with hydrocortisone, dexamethasone or prednisone and if Primary AD replace aldosterone with Fludrocortisone. In times of physical stress like surgery, accidents and illnesses, it is necessary to get IV steroids and fluids. In times of mental stress either happy or stressful, it is necessary to “stress dose” which means to take extra oral steroids in order to avoid an Adrenal Crisis. An Adrenal Crisis can be fatal. It is when the stressors are using up your oral steroids making one very sick and therefore extra IV or oral steroids are required. Since Addison’s Disease is a chronic condition, daily replacement medication can never be stopped or death will surely happen. A person with any type of AD must regularly maintain doctor visits, examinations and lab tests. There is no single blood or urine test that gives us answers therefore a panel of different ones and doctor visits are a must. Every Addisonian should wear an identification bracelet stating that he or she has the disease, to insure proper emergency treatment. An identification card outlining treatment is also suggested. It is important to bring awareness to this rare, lifethreatening disease.

Awareness is Key!

I had a similarly positive, professional experience. If for some reason you don’t click with your therapist, the site allows you to request a different one. Biggest Brain Benefits:

How Long to Nap By Abbie Tripplehorn

Naps are in these days. The question is: how long to nap? Each nap length has its own benefits. Let’s take a look at how your brain can benefit from different phases of shorter sleep times.

Hour and a Half This stage of sleep allows you to enter the deep phase of rest, which includes dreaming and REM (rapid eye movement). Waking from this type of extra rest is pleasant as it enhances emotional well-being and procedural memory (part of the long-term memory which controls motor function and how the brain files information on how to do things such as talk, ride a bicycle, or walk).

Hour While this length of nap will have you waking up a little groggy and wishing for more sleep, it is extremely beneficial as you enter the deepest realm of sleep known as “slow-wave sleep”.

the greatest benefits of improvement on cognitive functions, such as strengthening the memory to recall names, faces, and facts.

Half an Hour Although napping for just 30 minutes may feel almost cruel when you battle that hangover feeling for up to an additional half hour after waking, once the nap’s advantages occur, you’ll see the positives (restorative brain effects) of this shorter sleep time.

Power Nap The shortest of all naps, the power nap, lasts a minimum of 10 - 20 minutes. Sleeping for this short time keeps you in the lightest realm of (NREM) non-rapid eye movement sleep. With just a few moments of shut-eye, you can experience a recharge of energy! Whether you nap leisurely and enjoy the 90-minute nap, or only have time for 10 minutes of rest during the day, be sure to reap these nap benefits.

According to a study, a nap of at least an hour provides 26 • My Life 360 | Winter Holidays 2016/2017 www.MyLife360mag.com.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Health

By Melody Miller

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” -Jim Rohn

• Shortness of breath

Good health is priceless, and it’s the kind of thing you don’t miss until it’s gone - or quickly failing. Once you become exhausted and start noticing hair loss, brittle nails, and physical ailments such as the following, it’s time to get serious about taking care of your body before it’s too late.

• Dizziness

Vitamin deficiencies can happen for a variety of reasons. A lack of B12 can be detrimental, leading to many different health issues.

• And more

Vegetarians and vegans are at higher risks for deficiency in this area as the best sources of B12 are found in carnivore-based diets.

Others groups at high risk are:

• Someone infected with bacterial growth

Symptoms of B12 deficiency include: • Decreased appetite • Memory loss • Osteoporosis • Canker sores • Lethargy

• Arthritis

B12 benefits: • Youthful skin • Prevents eczema • Heals skin • Promotes healthy hair and helps prevent hair loss

• Increased brain power

• Diabetics

• Anyone who has had stomach surgery

• Neurological issues

• Promotes energy

• Anemics

• Those with fertility issues

• Anxiety

• Helps prevent cancer

• Alcoholics

• Autoimmune disorder sufferers

• Weakened digestive system

• Healthy nails

• Anyone over 50

• Those with colon disorders (such as Crohn’s, Colitis, IBS or Celiac)

• Dry skin

• Enhanced mood • Etc. Vitamin B12 can be found in quality meats, dairy, fish and shellfish. Supplements also suffice if you don’t consume any of these foods. This vitamin controls the life and formation of cells. It’s crucial that our body is properly nourished. You may feel it is unnecessary to purchase a quality B12 supplement, but if you invest in your health now so that you don’t have to invest in hospital bills later, it will be a joy. RDA recommends at least 2.4 micrograms of Vitamin B12 daily.

Healthy Recipes Road Trip! Where to Eat

Pajama Program Delivering Warm Sleepwear and Nurturing Books to Children in Need

Our Mission

Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide, many of whom are waiting to be adopted. Every child has the right to a good night. Thousands of children across the United States go to sleep at night afraid and lonely, in ill-fitting and soiled clothing and alone with their dreaded thoughts. A Pajama Program child may live in a group home, a shelter or temporary housing facilities. The children Pajama Program serves are often shuffled from one place to another. Many of them have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a parent tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story. Some of the children are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter. The two simple gifts of pajamas and books let these children know that someone cares sometimes these are the only new things they have ever received. Through this simple act of love, we can fulfill every child’s right to a good night.
