Welcome to the RSNO’s new Season in Aberdeen. The Orchestra, RSNO Chorus and I are looking forward to playing our part in the 150th Anniversary celebrations of the wonderful Music Hall, our Aberdeen home. We’re proud of our new 09:10 Season; we’ve been creating it and making arrangements for over three years. There are some threads that weave throughout the Season; themes and links that knit together pieces and programmes. This year we will be looking at music inspired by works of literature: the exotic stories of Scheherazade; the epic tales of Peer Gynt and Taras Bulba; and a classic novel, Don Quixote. Composers from the 20th and 21st Centuries are well represented in the Season, with a great European premiere by Michael Daugherty and contemporary works by Oliver Knussen, alongside established masterpieces by Stravinsky, Janácˇek and Richard Strauss. As well as welcoming four world-class soloists, I’m very pleased that our concerts this Season will be conducted by members of our ‘home team’ – myself (twice), my predecessor, RSNO Conductor Emeritus Alexander Lazarev, and RSNO Assistant Conductor, the very talented Austrian, David Danzmayr.

A Little Knight Music! Friday 9 April 2010: 7.30pm A concert showcasing the superbly talented sections of the RSNO: Stravinsky’s Symphonies is a short work for wind and brass, whilst the strings have their chance to shine in Tchaikovsky’s beautiful Serenade. “This is a piece from the heart,” said the composer. Out and About in Aberdeen and Shire 1-6 March 2010

In addition to our 09:10 Season at the Music Hall, Aberdeen, the Orchestra is delighted to be bringing its successful Out and About week to Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in March 2010. Out and About takes the RSNO to places not normally reached by live orchestral music. Our musicians are placed in many different settings to provide local communities with opportunities to experience Scotland’s national orchestra in new and creative ways. The RSNO will be travelling around your area delivering a diverse series of workshops, events, visits, performances and concerts. This weeklong celebration of music aims to nurture talent, encourage creativity and build a new audience of people of all ages. Keep updated on our plans at www.rsno.org.uk “Just a quick note to say thank you to all the members of the RSNO that came to play with our orchestra. I personally found it to be a fantastic experience and great fun. Also, massive thanks to David [Danzmayr], who has given me a brand new outlook on performing music and was an amazing and supportive conductor.” Lesley, 1st violin, Perth Youth Orchestra Out and About Week 2009, Perth & Kinross

30 Years of Young Voices The 09:10 Season Fundraising Appeal

During the 09:10 Season the RSNO Annual Appeal will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the RSNO Junior Chorus. For 30 years the RSNO Junior Chorus has been a beloved part of Scotland’s musical life, creating unforgettable musical memories for thousands of children, and providing them with the priceless opportunity to work alongside one of Europe’s finest orchestras.

Generations have already benefited from the expert training and experience of performance and recording that being a member of the RSNO Junior Chorus provides. Every Monday evening the RSNO Centre is a hive of activity as over 250 children make music together, growing audibly in confidence and skill as the weeks go by. Whatever else they go on to do in their lives, they will always have music.

The Gift of Singing Many people these days opt to donate back to the RSNO some of the great savings they make through being a subscriber. In this special anniversary year you can help us to bring the gift of singing to future generations of Scottish children. Please make a donation as we seek to expand and enrich the opportunities we provide for the RSNO Junior Chorus.
