WHO DO YOU LOVE? Introduction [For Sure: 1 John] What is 1 John all about? “I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.” - 1 John 5:13 Read 1 John 2:15-17 [Prayer - Another house church] Who do you love? [Gutters Clogged] John has told us why he wrote this book, so that we can be “for sure” we’re saved. He wants us to be for sure or for assurance to flow into our lives, like water flows downs the gutter. But there are things that can clog this up and keep us from being saved period. One of ways the Bible describes what keeps us from coming to Jesus to be saved or from being for sure about our salvation as Christians is loving this world or lust. So, today we’re going to talk about who do you love? The big idea here is love for God and for the world can’t live in the same heart. They are enemies. “You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.” - James 4:4 So, we’re going to look at two reasons why love for God and love for this world can’t live in the same heart. We need to see this passage of the Bible as God’s grace to us too! God, the Father’s commands are not a burden, but a blessing! “Grant what thou commandest and then command what thou wilt.” - Augustine It don’t make sense The first reason why love for the world and love for God can’t live together is it doesn’t make sense. [1 John 2:15, 16]

What is God calling us to do here? So, if we’re going to stop loving this evil “world” we need to know what he means by world. What is the most famous verse in the Bible? Obviously this is not a command to stop loving sinners who are far from God, because this is what God did in sending Jesus. What does the first verse in the Bible say? Obviously God is not calling us to stop loving the creation that he made. In fact, the idea that the physical is bad and the spiritual is good is something John is saying is false in his letter. So, what does the word “world” mean here? “the world as it places itself over against God...the combination of things that draw us away from God (Wright, 147).” World is everything that rebels against God and his word. It is the way things are. It is doing what everyone else is doing. It is believing what everyone else believes. The Bible teaches this is what is wrong with us, all of us. “Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world.” - Ephesians 2:1, 2 Why are we told to stop loving the world? So, if we love things that are opposite of who God is or things that rebel against him, it shows we don’t really love God. Love for God and love for the world can’t live together. [Tambourines] Read 1 John 2:16 John here explains more about what it means to love the world. What are the three things the world offers here? What is lust?

It is what you want, can’t live without, desire, hope for, go after, love, find pleasure in, and so on. “Lusts of the flesh (cravings or pleasures) is a summary term for what is wrong with us in God’s eyes. In sin, people turn from God to serve what they want...And the most significant inner conflict in Christians is between what the Spirit wants and what we want.” - Powlison What are some examples of lust? What are some ways we lust after good things? There is nothing wrong with wanting to have money. The problem is when we lust after it and it is what we love more than God. You know you love money more than God if you get anxious about it. You’re happy when you have it and sad when you don’t. You look down on others who don’t have it. There is nothing wrong with wanting a relationship. The problem is when our thoughts and hopes are wrapped up in a person. Do you sin against God to have a relationship? Are you willing to settle for a man or a woman who is not godly or do you avoid someone who is godly? If so, you have replaced Jesus in your life. There is nothing wrong with wanting respect or acceptance. Are you willing to sin to get respect? Do you get angry when you don’t have it? Do you get nervous around people? They have become bigger and more important than God. Love for the world has clogged love for God. [Eva/I want it/I need it] Do you lust after the world? We try to stiff arm God’s truth like a football player at this point. We try to justify our sin. We say things like “I want, I expect, I wish for, I desire, I demand, I need, I long for, I feel, God told me, God has called me. We say these things all the time and a lot of it is simply wanting something else more than God. Application: Selfish Dreams/Desires This can happen within the church and outside the church. What I mean by within the church is a desire (I feel/I want) to have your own way. It’s a desire for control. It’s a desire to be seen or noticed by people as righteous and holy. It’s wanting to be a leader, so much you don’t listen to the leadership God has given you and you are jealous of the ones God is raising up.

It can happen outside the church. What I mean by outside the church is you have dreams and visions for your life that are not honoring to God and not loving to your brother or sister in Christ. What do your personal goals have to do with the local church being central to God’s plan? Are you involving others in your decision making processes? How about others who might disagree? How will your plan affect the church and its witness? How is this demonstrating love for your brothers and sisters? God’s priorities according to the Bible: 1) God, 2) Wife, Husband, Family, 3) Church, and 4) Work/School. Where does your ambition fit into God’s priorities? It won’t last The second reason why love for the world and love for God are enemies is it won’t last. [Vacation] Read 1 John 2:17 Why should we not love or lust after the world here? What does it mean that this world is fading away? [Katrina] 1) God is the hurricane 2) Lusts/Love for the world are the houses 3) Foundations that remain are those who do want God wants Only one life to live, which soon shall pass, only what is done for Christ will last. - Piper How have you seen in your own life how desire for this world is fading? [Roscoe/Shawn] How can we run from loving this world and lusting after it to loving and doing God’s will? God is trying to teach us about the gospel our entire lives. - Keller “For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” - 1 John 5:4, 5 Look at me I'm good partner I'm on my forever buzz If everything I have is taken I can take it. - Lecrae
