SEX Introduction How to Love: Song of Solomon The Song of Solomon is one of the most neglected books in the Bible, but it is the only book in the Bible completely dedicated to the idea of love. Something we all have in common is we want to be loved and love in return. This picture of love is all about Jesus. The whole Bible is about him. This is the way Jesus and all who came before him understood it. So, the love, marriage, and sex we see here are a shadow of God’s love for his people, his feelings toward us, and his closeness with us {not sex with God}. My prayer for you all is this book would open your eyes again to the beauty of God’s love for you in Jesus. God’s love for us in Jesus is more than some facts we say we believe, but a real love to be experienced. Also for some of you my is prayer you would be awakened to God’s love for the first time and that you begin to love him in return. This book tells us how to love people and be loved by them. It is all about relationships, marriage and sex. The Song of Solomon is a celebration of marriage and sex between a husband and a wife. This is what we’re going to talk about tonight, sex. [Read Song of Solomon 4:16-5:1] [Pastoral Prayer] Remnant, Redemption Hill Sex as Gift1 The first thing we’re going to talk about tonight is sex as a gift from God. What is sex? We all have a view on what it is, whether we be Christians or not. I would say the majority view on sex in our culture is that we determine what it is and how we’re going to do it.

So, what I mean is we as a culture say it’s ok to have sex outside of marriage between one man and woman or it is ok for two people of the same gender to have sex. We decide this. [Instruction Manual] The Bible teaches that God is the maker of sex. It also teaches us he is good and has knowledge of all things without end. “This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.” - Genesis 2:24, 25 Why should a man leave his father and mother? (wife) What happens after the couple get’s married? (joined/united) What is the result of their having sex? (knowledge/oneness) So, when Adam and Eve had sex, God wasn’t caught off guard like, “I didn’t know that would happen.” No, the story unfolds and it is as if this is the way things were supposed to be. God brings his daughter to Adam and they have sex. “Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!” - Genesis 1:31 God was not mad they had sex or anything like that. No, he was pleased because they were doing what they were created to do. He made sex to give it to them couple as a gift. [Purpose of Instruction Manual] However, God did not make sex for sex itself. He created sex as a gift yes, but the gift has meaning. “For when the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. In this respect they will be like the angels in heaven.“ - Matthew 22:30 What does this verse tell us about sex? In other words, Jesus is saying that in the new heaven and earth, there will be no marriage or sex. Some of you won’t like heaven, because there will be no sex. The Bible begins with a couple marrying and them experiencing the deepest level of unity in sex. The Bible also ends with a beautiful picture of the church, described as a

bride, being united to God forever in pleasure and oneness [not sex]. This is why God created sex, to give us a small picture of this pleasure and oneness we were meant for with God. “And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.” - Revelation 21:1-3 What does this our relationship with God? Summary: 1. Sex is good 2. God made us to enjoy it 3. It’s not permanent or everything 4. It’s a picture of pleasure and oneness [Read Song of Solomon 4:16] This is the bullseye, the main point and climax of the book, the couple enjoying sex in marriage. Awake, north wind! Rise up, south wind! Blow on my garden and spread its fragrance all around. Come into your garden, my love; taste its finest fruits. (Song 4:16) How is sex described here? 1) Breeze at the beach 2) Beautiful garden 3) Fruit 4) Cologne and Perfume This is the way sex is supposed to be. It is a beautiful thing, a delightful thing, that brings no shame or guilt, and actually brings two people together. The garden of sex is meant to be a picture of the garden paradise of knowing and enjoying God forever through Jesus Christ. Sex as God

The second thing we see about sex from the Song of Solomon is it is not god. What I mean is we should not look to sex to do what only God can do. Sex is not the goal, God is. This is really the view of our culture. Sex is god. Sex is ultimate, not God. Sex has nothing to do with God. We know what it is and will use it our way, not God’s. [Read Song of Solomon 5:1] I have entered my garden, my treasure, my bride! I gather myrrh with my spices and eat honeycomb with my honey. I drink wine with my milk. Young Women of Jerusalem Oh, lover and beloved, eat and drink! Yes, drink deeply of your love! (Song of Solomon 5:1) How is sex described here? Even though sex can be so beautiful, there are several warnings all throughout the book that sex has it’s proper place. “not to awaken love until the time is right.” - (Song of Solomon 3:5 3X) What does she mean by not waking up love? God’s design: 1) Marriage 2) Sex What does it look like for sex to be a god in your life? [Sex as power] - I feel better about myself - I need to be saved from - Redemption God commands us to love him, trust him, delight in him, find happiness in him, look to him for love, acceptance, power, pleasure and so on. When we look to sex for these things we’ve made it a god, an idol. Idols enslave us and destroy us. How else could you know if sex is a god in your life? 1) Sin to get 2) Sin when you don’t get

Sex as Gross The last thing we learn about sex from Song of Solomon is it’s not gross. [Read Song of Solomon 4:16-5:1] What about this description says sex is not gross? However, this is the way sex is usually presented in church culture. It’s something that is bad and you don’t ever talk about it. You get embarrassed and blush. Why might someone view sex as gross? People who think sex is gross usually come from an extremely religious background or have been abused. Now, if you’ve been abused we don’t want to take that lightly and I want you all to know I consider it my role to be there for you and counsel you through these tough issues. This is what the majority of my study and life is given to. So, sex isn’t gross it’s good. It’s a gift from the Creator God who tells us so. Conclusion Sex is one of these key areas where it is pretty clear whether someone is really following Jesus or not. “You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.” - Ephesians 5:5 “Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming.” - Colossians 3:5 If you’re having sex outside of marriage between one man and one women, you’re lost. You do not know God and will go to hell. The reason is your worshipping sex rather than God. You bringing shame upon his name. [Gospel] So, what if that’s true about you? Is there any hope for you? Is there anyway to escape God’s anger?

Without a doubt, the God who created sex, also sent his son to save us from our sexual sins. Jesus lived his whole life in sexual purity and died a 30 year old virgin. On the cross, he wore all our sexual stains and died to pay the penalty our sins deserved. He is the only one clean enough to wash away our guilt. By trusting in him, God will wash your sins away and give you a new heart and power to turn away from sinning against him in this area. If you’re already a believer, then my prayer for you is that you would experience the gospel freshly. You would know the deep delight and pleasure God has is in you, because of Christ and you would love him in return. “Oh, lover and beloved, eat and drink! Yes, drink deeply of your love!” - Song of Solomon 5:1
