BLONDE BULLET 2013 Published by the Alberta & Man/Sask Blonde d’Aquitaine Associations Welcome from the Alberta President Well winter came very early this year, but in my part of the province we have had warmer than normal weather since the new year, and it feels like spring is around the corner. The cows have really backed off feed the last month or so as the weather continues to be warm, and that’s always a good thing. Dave Kamelchuk and I (along with our wives) made the trip to Ontario again this year . We had the chance to visit with, and see the cattle of some Blonde breeders we hadn’t met before which is always very interesting. You find that there are some great Blonde cattle out there, not just amongst the more recognized breeders. The AGM for the Alberta Association was held in at the home of Ken & Mary Mackenzie on Saturday November 3rd. Thank You to the Mackenzies for their great food and hospitality. Art & Sharon Breitkreuz returned to the board keeping our group at six The balance of the meeting was taken up with discussion of the upcoming National event and other ways to promote our breed in the year to come. By the time you receive this Bullet the 2012-2013 Alberta Blonde Bull Test will be complete. There were 16 bulls consigned by Arsha Blondes, Little Creek Blondes, Shambani Blondes, Spruce Vale Blondes and Willow Springs Stock Farm. The bulls are now back at their home farms, and available for private treaty purchase. There is more information, and results later in this publication.

Welcome from the Man/Sask President This is the most expectant time of year. As the days get longer and the cows get larger, we can look forward to the next crop of lively calves. The "girls" should be ballooning out very nicely now. Did you ever notice they eat like there is no tomorrow for the first month or so they are home, then start backing off as the new year progresses? Seems like they need to intake all the calories they can, then once the foetus is getting larger, the stomach compartments hold less, so eating slows down some, just a thing we have noticed out here. The feed stacks are going down, this year has been a bumper crop for the second time in a row. There is lots of hay for sale wherever I have traveled and that is not even including all that has gone down south or wherever needed. Winter has been quite typical here with the snow blizzards and wind. Last year was a walk in the park, no snow at all, very unusual. There has been a couple of storms that affected all three provinces but even so , this year is not out of the ordinary as far as weather goes, we have seen worse. Cattle are still moving through the system at a reasonable price, for any of us with culls or commercial cattle. The Blonde breed is ahead of so many with the meat to bone ratio. Once this fact is well known, the meat packing industry would be well advised to look for the Blondes or cross breeds that come thru the auction barns. For now, keep warm and dry and have an excellent calving season.

Alberta Blonde Bulls on Test at Strathmore The Alberta Blonde Association bull test is now complete at Cattleland Feedyards near Strathmore, Alberta. Five Blonde breeders contributed 16 bulls for the test. There are Fullblood and Purebred bulls in the test, with a majority being polled. They were delivered in late October for a warm-up period to let them adjust to new surroundings, new feed and to help even out some of the environmental weight differences of the bulls before the test started. The official test started December 1, 2012 and will conclude March 23, 2013. The bulls are weighed every 28 days during the test. If you would like to have the results sent directly to you, please contact The Alberta Blonde Association. The bulls are available for purchase by private treaty, so if you are interested in any of the bulls on test, contact the contributor.

Alberta on Top at the 2012 National The 2012 National was held in Victoriaville, Quebec during the Expo Agricole de Victoriaville (October 612). Cattle were exhibited by breeders from Alberta, Ontario and of course Quebec. WSS Xtravagant 66X with her heifer calf at side sired by WSS Xplosive 31X was named the 2012 National Champion Female. She was exhibited by her Quebec owner Ryland Cleary who had purchased her from Willow Springs Stock Farm as one of the high selling females in the 2011 National Sale. Xtravagant has had a very successful show career the last two years, winning numerous awards in Eastern Canada.

WSS Yttrium 3Y was named the 2012 Reserve National Champion Female. She was exhibited by Willow Springs Stock Farm. Yttrium began the long trip east in early September, was shown in Ontario & Quebec and culminated it as the high selling animal at the 2012 Cream of the Crop Sale in Ontario. Paul Ferguson of Crystal Farms was the high bidder in a hotly contested battle for ownership of this outstanding heifer. Several other animals from Forty Acre Blondes, Little Creek Farms (the Kamelchuks) and Willow Springs Stock Farm were also well received at the Cream of the Crop Sale, including Little Creek Yochanen the high selling bull to James Graham of New Brunswick.

Alberta to Host the 2013 National Plans are underway for the Alberta Blonde d’Aquitaine Association to host the 2013 National Blonde Show, Sale and AGM. The Show will be held in conjunction with the Olds Fall Classic October 4-6, 2013. The show entry deadline is Sept 15, 2013 and all entries are made on-line at the Olds Ag. Society website (http:// www.oldsagsociety.com/fallclas.html). A few things I wanted to touch on are the fact that the Alberta Association will be covering entry fees and providing a prize money payout (exact payout still to be determined). Although the Olds prize list does not separate calves/yearlings into Senior (Jan-March born) and Junior (after April 1st) we have received permission to run additional classes to accommodate more age ranges; so don’t worry about your April calf having to show in a class against January borns. There are also plans for a private treaty/silent auction sale facilitated by the Association. Sale animals would be charged a flat fee to be entered into a private treaty catalogue that would be mailed out to Blonde enthusiasts across the country. Again the exact details are still to be worked out.

The official host hotel is the Ramada Inn Olds - Direct (403) 556-5900 or for Booking 1-800-854-9517. There are rooms blocked under Canadian Blonde Association until Sept 1st Website: http://www.ramada.com/hotels/alberta/olds/ ramada-olds/hotel-overview As always we rely on sponsorships to make the event run. If you are interested in sponsoring the event, know of someone who might be, have more questions about the event or would like to become more involved in planning/participation, please contact the Alberta Blonde Association.
