In Memory of Brandt Lee Jackson  1985-2007 Brandt Lee Jackson, born February 1, 1985 was actively working at Sungate Management, Inc., and was preparing to take the RES 201 class in June to obtain his ARM® Credential. His plan was to continue his education and eventually expand on the business, following in the footsteps of his father, Roy Jackson, ARM® and a CPM® Candidate. Brandt took his own life earlier this year turning his family’s lives upside down. What you are about to read will certainly have a profound effect on your heart. As I discussed with Roy whether or not to publish his prose in the IREM® newsletter, he pointed out to me that if reading this could help just one person or make a difference in one person’s decision regarding the value of life, then it would be worth reading through his sobering words. Written at 4 a.m. in the morning, the words came to him effortlessly as he put pen to paper.

People say they don’t understand. Well, this is my best description.

Imagine the person you love the most in this world, or imagine your child. Then, imagine if you can, that you will never see them again as long as you are on this earth. Imagine waking up every day and asking yourself, is there something I could have done differently? Is there something I should have said differently? Should I have made a phone call when I didn’t? Imagine having horrible images in your head or hearing the words “your son took his life last night” over and over and over again in your head. Imagine the greatest pain you have ever felt and then multiply that by infinity. Imagine that you know you were left by choice, and there is nothing you can do to ever change that. Imagine missing someone so badly that you are sure if you don’t talk to them soon, you will cease to exist. Imagine tears that never end, and fears you never knew you had. Imagine all the emotions that we as human beings are capable of experiencing being experienced within minutes... one minute you’re “OK”, whatever that means anymore, and the next, you are falling apart. Imagine, if you can, for just one second, that your heart is being slowly and methodically ripped from your chest, and then maybe, just maybe, you will have walked past the door of my pain.

We asked the Executive Council and a few Past Presidents to lend their wisdom and expertise to help answer questions and extend advice to our Candidates. The Mixer was held in Dallas at Crockett’s Lounge at the Hilton Lincoln Centre. Membership Chair, Julie Brand Lynch, who is a Professor at SMU, an Academic member of IREM®, and President of Real Estate Talent Solutions, put together this great event.
