in the heart of the town A beach for every day of the week There are many great things about Royan’s golden beaches. Among the best sun-drenched resorts on the Atlantic coast, Royan and its coast is a paradise for those that love swimming and sports. With a long line of huge beaches and narrow streams in the rock pools, the only problem is knowing how to choose between getting involved in one of the many activities and relaxing in calm and intimate surroundings. LA GRANDE CONCHE La Grande Conche is an exceptional playing field which uses its 2,650 metres of thin sand sheltered from the wind. Facing the south, it offers all the delights of swimming right in the heart of the town. FONCILLON The discrete Foncillon, opposite the exhibition centre allows its swimmers to enjoy the joys of the sea. LE CHAY Snug like a bird’s nest in one of the winding paths of the cliff, the Chay strip is the most intimate of Royan’s beaches. LE PIGEONNIER Le Pigeonnier strip is a haven of peace whose golden sand is enjoyed by families and children in search of peace and tranquillity. PONTAILLAC Pontaillac beach, the “trendy beach” decked out in the blue and white strips of its tents, is a great spot for surfers.

upon the order of the Black Prince, Cordouan is one of the most beautiful and oldest lighthouses in France. In 1584, construction was started by Michel de Montaigne, mayor of Bordeaux, under the leadership of Paris architect, Louis de Foix. The work lasted 27 years until 1611 and the building was awarded «Oeuvre Royale». At a height of 67.5 metres, it has 6 Renaissance style floors and gives visitors an unobstructed view of the entire Gironde estuary, the Côte d’Arvert and the Pointe de la Coubre.

A touch of Brazil in Royan

From Monday July 13th to August 23rd – Morning visit at 10.00

With the 1940s Brazilian style of architecture in mind, the architects working on the reconstruction came up with solutions specific to Royan by «tropicalising» Le Corbusier’s modern designs. A Brazilian touch can be detected in the use of curved shapes, bright colours, or the relationship between in- and outdoors, the use of patios, loggias, shading devices or screen walls.

Inventing a town

First seaside estate in the town and departement, Pontaillac is still a quarter inspired by Bordeaux: a place where seaside traditions dating back to the mid 19th century are still alive. Meeting point: Royan Museum

The port is a very special part of Royan. Third most important marina on the Atlantic coast it provides a safe haven for many boats. It is also a busy fishing port, as can be seen by its Fish Auction Hall. For a little over an hour and a half, discover the maritime history of the town and how the fish auction works. In the sales room, which can be viewed from a balcony, the fish is shown to the customers. A sign of the times is that there is no longer a crier to yell out the prices: everything here is computerised. The end of the visit includes a tasting session with sushi made from locally-caught sea-bass and meagre fish. Meeting point: Palais des Congrès, entrance overlooking the square (reservation essential).

New for 2015

Artists’ houses: Le Chay, Le Pigeonnier Set out from the Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville) housed in the former St Anne then Les Palmiers mansion, to discover some of the most unusual holiday venues in Royan, passing through the old village of Le Chay and past the studio of Father Couturaud, who inspired the painter Gaston Ballande! Meeting point: Town Hall, 80 avenue de Pontaillac

«The other face of Royan» A town and its businesses

Notre-Dame, concrete cathedral

Masterpiece in the Royan heritage, Notre-Dame church ranks among the important buildings that marked the nineteen fifties. Recognised internationally as soon as it was built, a visit to this monument really is a must. Meeting time and point: Thursday at 12.00 at the great western door on the opposite side to the bell tower

Visit a «carrelet» at Pontaillac With the association «Un Carrelet pour tous» Discover the inside of a «carrelet», symbol of the regional maritime heritage and traditional fishing pastime. Admire the unique view of the Pontaillac Conche and Gironde Estuary, accompanied by the owner who restored this «carrelet».

VISIT AND TASTING SESSION reservation required. The centre of Royan had to be entirely rebuilt in the 1950s, allowing a complete reorganisation of the town centre with carefully structured commercial areas. They can be seen as the symbol of renewed energy and the sign of a leap into the modern era. The lines of the sea front, the main roads or Boulevard Briand, composed around the amazing silhouette of the central market hall where the visit will be crowned by a tasting session of local products, are reminders of the new destiny the seaside resort was to experience. Meeting point: Royan Tourisme Accueil - Opposite the Post Office

Out and about in Royan Museum History, Exhibitions.

Royan Museum has been based since February 1, 2004 in Pontaillac’s former market located in a historical district of Royan. Its collections can be viewed as part of a complete chronological trail enabling you to discover Royan’s rich past, from prehistory through to the growth of the seaside resort, not forgetting the Second World War, or the architecture and design from the 1950s. A collection of curios similar to that displayed by the museum in the 1930s when it was housed in Foncillon Casino and later destroyed by bombing in 1945 is a great end to your visit. These displays include unusual items from the four corners of the earth. Temporary exhibitions allow you to relive Royan’s past, combining the disciplines of history, architecture, music, the visual arts, literature and the natural sciences. Royan Museum proposes a rich variety of concerts, shows and conferences for major national events such as the European Heritage Days and the Museum Evenings. The Ministry of Culture and Communication’s Heritage Department awards the «Villes et Pays d’Art et d’Histoire» title (Towns and Regions of Art and History) to local authorities which enhance, market and improve their heritage. This label guarantees the skills of the heritage officers and of the tour guides and the quality of their work. From architecture to landscapes, the towns and regions go out of their way to show off their heritage in all its diversity. Today, a network of 167 towns and regions throughout France are proud to present their know-how.

The Culture and Heritage service Royan’s Culture and Heritage service has the task of implementing the «Villes d’Art et d’Histoire» agreement signed between Royan town council and the Ministry of Culture & Communication in January 2011. Developing tourism, awareness building among local residents, promoting and raising the profile of heritage and developing educational initiatives are the four key activities accompanying the awarding of the «Villes d’Art et d’Histoire» label. To achieve these goals, the Culture & Heritage service organises numerous activities to help the town’s residents, (young and old) and its visitors to discover its heritage. Discover our event schedules through the «Laissez vous conter Royan» programmes. Educational activities Young people are a key target of efforts to raise awareness of the heritage of the «Villes d’Art et d’Histoire». The Culture & Heritage service presents numerous educational activities during school term time but also during children’s leisure time, enabling them to (re)discover the town with their parents and grandparents. Various discovery guides are already available as part of the «Raconte-moi» series providing a chance to discover Royan’s heritage as a family. BRAVO Bravo consists of a selection of events chosen for their quality, originality, and accessibility with the accent placed on variety so that each and everyone will find something to enjoy. The programme lasts from September to May and this year is inspired by great characters: from the classics we have Tartuffe and Hernani, not forgetting Moulineaux in «Tailleur pour dames», alongside today’s popular stars such as Antoine Duléry and the actors from the French TV series «Plus belle la vie». Other personalities who marked the 20th century also enliven the season: Georges Méliès, SaintExupéry, Marguerite Duras and Rosa Luxemburg. Stringed instruments take the centre stage of the classical music scene, with the Atanassov Trio, the PoitouCharentes Orchestra and Hortense CartierBresson with a piano recital, for example. And in September 2015 we will present another season of Bravo to you! The complete programme is available at all the information points in town: tourist office, Royan Tourisme Accueil, theatre or on Service Culture et Patrimoine 80 avenue de Pontaillac - 17200 Royan Tel. 05 46 22 55 36 -

Most people think that the central market is shaped like a shell due to its original shape and seaside location but don’t you believe is the true story. • A market, its history

This avant-garde structure was designed in 1955 by architects L. Simon and A. Morisseau, helped by engineers R. Sarger and B. Lafaille. It is a small shell of 8 cm thick reinforced concrete, chosen due to the characteristics of local geology. It’s monolith shell is 52.40 m in diameter and rests on thirteen peripheral support points without any internal pillar. Being the first of its kind at this time, this building inspired the CNIT in La Défense, the Nanterre market and it has also been said the «Christ the King» church in Melbourne, Australia. The central market was restored in 2003 and is listed as a Historical Monument.

• Quality and diversity

The market is a mass of people all with a single idea, to please and be pleased, and to find the authentic Atlantic flavours. At every turn, at each stall we discover products of great tradition and quality.

Rue Henri Meriot - 17200 ROYAN

• A lively market

The central market traders will welcome you every morning from 7.00 to 13.00 except Mondays off season, and every morning peak season (JulyAugust). Every Wednesday and Sunday morning throughout the year is «big day» open air market. The market is bustling all year round, particularly at Christmas, Easter, 14th July, 15th August with numerous prizes to be won.

In one of the 151 most beautiful villages in France, an ancient tradition endures with its salt worker Sébastien Rossignol. On the salt marsh, unique to Pays Royannais and the most southern point on the French Atlantic coast, Sébastien employs a skill which is not easy nor at all therapeutic. Removing the coarse salt and carefully extracting the fleur de sel (flower of salt) are the daily tasks for harvesting this white gold. Tours by the salt worker take you into a natural world, let yourself be taken over by the atmosphere of this fascinating place between the land and sea. Guided tour: every day from 16th June to 16th September at 16.30 and 18.30. €3/ adult. Free for children and individual. For other times and group bookings: please contact us. an Church m e Ro Every market town or s

village has one of these joyous pieces of architecture, all distinguished by the balance, sense of Art, genre and period. From La Tremblade and Talmont to St Romain/ Gironde, the Pays Royannais has many historic religious buildings. Sainte-Radegonde in Talmont, which sits proudly on its rocky promontory, is the most visited Roman church in Saintonge.

sur Gironde

Upon entering this peninsula, you will find that all of the roads in the village lead to the church dedicated to Saint Radegonde. The clarity of the traditional architecture, the colours of the doors and the wooden shutters, the stone wells preserved in their original state, the sundials, the hundred year old lime tree in front of the town hall, all prepare you for the striking vision of the church - a «fortress of chiselled ivory» beyond which lies the vastness of the biggest estuary in Europe. Around Royan Fort Louvois In 1690 the Marquis of Louvois, Defence Minister for Louis XIV, ordered the construction of a fort on a rocky promontory called ‘Le Chapus’. Constructed opposite the Citadelle of Oleron Castle, it gives a good view for cannons and makes it possible to cut off southern access to the Rochefort Arsenal. Vauban oversaw its completion in 1694. Fort Louvois is linked to solid ground by a paved 400m straight path, accessible only by boat at high tide. Visit the keep, the barracks, the supply stores and the weapon stores... See temporary exhibitions, a 3D model of the region, the oyster museum, the panoramic view of the sluice... Visit the keep, barracks and powder store. A permanent exhibition tells the story of the fort from its construction up until now. Panoramic view over the Oléron «coureau» (narrow channel). Guided visits every day in July and August.

Discover more in the area Chapus port Nowadays the port of Bourcefrance is the main oyster port of the Marennes-Oleron Basin and of France, with numerous slipways/jetties. l Don’t miss: fishermen setting off for the oyster beds during the ‘malines’ (high tide). Chapus Old Town A village of fishermen and oyster farming, low houses and narrow roads, it has existed since the 15th century. The toponymy of the roads of Chapus Old Town evoke an era when it was dependent on the sea: la rue des Mousses (Sea Spray Road), la rue et la place des Pilotes (Captain Road/ Square), la rue du Vieux Port (Old Port Road), la rue des Pêcheurs (Fishermen’s Road), etc. At the bottom of Chapus bay is the old port dating from the middle ages with its restored quay, used for selling salt and fishing. The labyrinth of narrow streets of old Chapus is a good place to start your exploration of this beautiful quarter. l

The Château was the residence of the bishops of Bordeaux in the 17th century. - Classified as a «Monument historique» – To break up your visit, you will be greeted in one of the Château’s drawing rooms or given the chance to try the Exceptional Cognac and Pineau.
