MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee

It is with my greatest pleasure that I welcome you to the 199th running of the Regatta President Paul Rogers Royal St. John’s Regatta. While every year is special, this year is extra special as it is the Canada 150 edition of the Regatta. We are happy to recognize and celebrate the 150th anniversary of confederation of our beautiful country. Next year will be a momentous year as well. Athletes, spectators and organizers have been enjoying the Regatta for 200 years, making us the oldest continuing sporting event in North America. We will celebrate our anniversary next year with special events surrounding Regatta Day. Please continue following along with our website and social media for updates over the coming months. In the meantime, please enjoy your time at the 199th Regatta. There is something here for everyone, from cash wheels, which support charitable organizations throughout our community to delicious food vendors to the 23 races on today’s schedule. You may notice that amongst those 23 races, an abundance of them fall under the Youth category. This year, we are proud to say that 30% of participants are under the age of 16. Youth are the future of the sport and with statistics like that, the future is strong! None of this would have been possible without the tremendous support we receive on a continuous basis. Without our sponsors, volunteers, staff, City of St. John’s and most of all, the hard-working athletes, none of this would be possible. For this, I thank you!

Dennis O’Keefe Dennis O’Keefe Dennis O’Keefe Mayor Mayor Mayor

Now, grab a hot dog, test your luck at a game of chance and sit back and enjoy the races! Paul Rogers President Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee

2017 Royal St. John’s Regatta CANADA 150 GREETINGS

On July 1, 1867 Canada became a Nation and is celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary in 2017. As it is the biggest anniversary since 1967, Canadians are spending this year celebrating our beautiful country. Although it is 150 years old, it is much younger and less populated than many other nations. However, despite its youth, the immense accomplishments could be indicative of an older country. Besides being the creator of Superman, peanut butter and basketball, Canada is associated with many life-changing actions that Canadians can be proud of. It has aided in the health of mankind with thousands of medical breakthroughs; most noteworthy the discovery of stem cells and insulin, creation of radiation equipment for cancer patients and discovery of safer heart surgery. The world became a little brighter when a medical student from Toronto created the very first light bulb. If that wasn’t something to be proud of, Canada is also home to the very first telephone; with the first trans-Atlantic signal happening right here in Newfoundland Labrador. With all of these accomplishments, along with being known worldwide for our friendly demeanour and accommodating nature and beautiful landscapes and scenery, we have so much to be proud of. On behalf of the Executive and members of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee, all of our participants, sponsors and patrons, we recognize the leadership and achievements of our country, Canada, in all fields of endeavor over the past 150 years. We wish our beautiful Country and all Canadians

On April 9, 2017, Canada commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in northern France. Included was a commemoration of the Battle of Monchy-le-Preux which involved members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. The Battle saw the Canadian Corps overtake the firmly entrenched German defenders upon the heights which crucially overlooked the Plains of Artois and the City of Arras located 12 km to the southwest. Monchy-le-Preux was located on a rise about eight km southeast of the City of Arras. The Regiment took part in the offensive beginning on April 14, 1917 and lost 450 members. Losses by the Regiment at Monchy were the second highest exceeded only by Beaumont Hamel. Vimy Ridge gained importance during World War I because of the heights which overlooked the Allied-held town. German forces seized control of the ridge in September 1914. French attempts to gain control of the ridge throughout 1915 were repulsed with the loss of some 150,000 French casualties. Although the British relieved French operations in May 1916, they were pushed back along a two km front. As part of the wide-scale Arras offensive in the spring of 1917 the Canadian Corps, operating under British General Julian Byng, were tasked with the recapture of Vimy Ridge. On the morning of April 9, the Canadian attack comprising four divisions began following a heavy three-week British artillery barrage. Within thirty minutes the Canadian 1st Division, under Arthur Currie, succeeded in capturing German front line positions and within a further half hour the second line had similarly passed into Canadian hands. With the entire ridge wholly under Allied control by April 12 (when Hill 145, the highest feature on the ridge, fell), this became the single most successful Allied advance on the Western Front to that date. The ridge remained in Allied hands for the remainder of the war. It did not come without cost however: 10,602 Canadians were wounded during the attack, and 3,598 killed. The opposing German force suffered even more heavily: 20,000 casualties. Four Victoria Crosses were awarded as a consequence of fighting at Vimy Ridge. Many historians suggest that the success of Canadian forces from all parts of the country fighting together for the first time during the Vimy Ridge campaign solidified Canada as a significant nation on the world stage. The tremendous loss of life, which in retrospect does not seem justified, has left a void still evident today and is the reason why “with the setting of the sun, we shall remember them”. 41

The Lamb

History of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Crest

Crown of Rocks/ Helmet Supporters/ Royal Crown Shield Rocks of Quidi Vidi The Motto

Supporters/Royal Crown

When the designation Royal was given to the St. John’s Regatta in 1993, the crest gained half caribou and half brown trout supporters. These are adorned by maple leafs and have circlets with the Royal Medallion hanging from them. The maple leaves represent competitors and spectators who come from all across the great nation of Canada, while the Royal Medallion represents the traditional connection that has existed between the Regatta and the Monarchy. The supporters themselves represent the spirit of Quidi Vidi Lake. They have the strength of the caribou, matched with the speed and agility of the brown trout, which are characteristics of all who compete in the races. The caribou is taken from the Coat of Arms of Newfoundland and Labrador. When combined with the tail of the brown trout, it represents the riches of the natural resources of the province. The supporters rest on a rocky formation which symbolizes the shores of Quidi Vidi Lake, where the races take place every year.

The Lamb

The crest employs a Paschal Lamb taken from the Crest of the City of St. John’s. However, this lamb is holding an oar as opposed to the pennant staff. This shows the close relationship between the Royal St. John’s Regatta and the City of St. John’s. The Lamb is standing on a rocky formation that is indicative of the connection with Newfoundland and Labrador.

Crown of Rocks/Helmet

The rocky formation on which the lamb stands is encircled with alternating crosses of Malta and the Pitcher Plant, the provincial floral emblem. The Cross of Malta is used when mentioning St. John in heraldry because it is taken from the insignia of the Order of St. John, which was given to the Island of Malta by the Emperor Charles V. Below this is a crest wreath that shares the same colours as the shield, silver and blue. From this flows the cape-like mantling, which leads to the helm or the helmet that rests atop the shield.

Shield

The shield displays a vertical shell within an inverted chevron laid on a field of wavy silver and blue lines. This represents a Regatta racing shell cutting through the waters of Quidi Vidi Lake to victory.

The Motto

At the very bottom of the crest lies a golden banner with the Latin motto “Certamen Traditione Regatur” which translates as “Let the Contest be Governed by Tradition”.

2017 Royal St. John’s Regatta BACKGROUND TO THE KIM STIRLING MEMORIAL TROPHY Kim Stirling was the daughter of Geoff and Joyce Stirling of Middle Cove, Newfoundland. Kim was an avid rower who dearly loved the sport and participated in the Royal St. John’s Regatta for four years with the Apache Female Crew. On October 16, 1977, at the age of 19, Kim was tragically killed on the west coast of Newfoundland in an automobile accident. During her years of rowing, Kim expressed her concern and disappointment to her mother that there was not a female championship race as there was for the male. Consequently, when she died, Geoff and Joyce decided that they would create a female championship trophy in her honour and memory. With the advice and assistance of John Perlin, then president of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee, the artistic services of Frank Warren, were enlisted. Frank was a sculptor who worked in pewter and lived on Bonaventure Avenue in St. John’s. It was decided a shell of delicate proportions mounted on a wooden base would be an appropriate and impressive female trophy. It took a year to complete and the Kim Stirling Memorial was ready for presentation in 1979. A further note of human interest: Kim had mentioned to her mother the last summer she rowed, when she died an old lady after many years of rowing, she would like to be buried on the finish line in the Anglican Cemetery. In the fall of 1977, at the age of 19, she was.

2017 Royal St. John’s Regatta

BACKGROUND TO THE MOLSON GERRY ANGEL MEMORIAL TROPHY The male championship trophy, as it is known today, was first presented in 1954. It was provided by Carling Breweries in the United States through the Pepperrell Air Force Base Non-Commissioned Officers Club in St. John’s. Fittingly, the Air Police Crew from Pepperrell was its first recipient. In the 1960s, Carling Breweries in Newfoundland was responsible for beer distribution for all the United States Bases within the province. During this time, the title of the trophy became the Carling Cup. It was to be awarded to the winners of the Armed Forces Race, which consisted mainly of crews from Pepperrell. Carling Breweries in the United States purchased O’Keefe Brewing Company in Canada and consequently, Carling O’Keefe was created. Carling O’Keefe then purchased Bennett Brewery, located in Newfoundland, and was known for its production of Dominion Ale. In 1973, Carling O’Keefe and the Regatta Committee renamed the distinctive trophy, the Dominion Ale Cup. When Molson and Carling O’Keefe merged in 1989 to form Molson Breweries Canada, the trophy was transferred to Molson, who retain its sponsorship at the present time. In 2002, the trophy was renamed once again, and is now known as the Molson Gerry Angel Memorial. This was done to honour the memory of a very worthwhile, dedicated and impressive gentleman, Gerry Angel. Mr. Angel was not only a longtime employee of Molson Breweries in St. John’s, but in 1982, he was given the first title of Honourary Life President of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee. The contributions that Mr. Angel had made to the Royal St. John’s Regatta were extensive and inspiring, symbolically comparative to the impressiveness of the 10 inch silver cup mounted on the 20 inch ebonized wooden base.

Each year, the winners of the Molson Canadian Male Championship Race are presented with the Molson Gerry Angel Memorial, gold medals and token Dominion t-shirts. In 2010, there was a change to the medals as the inserts took the shape of the unique and coveted Molson Gerry Angel Memorial.
