CHORAL CONTEST VENUE: Her Majesty’s Theatre ADJUDICATOR: Carol McKenzie Discipline Chair Janice Shelmerdine PRIMARY/SECONDARY SCHOOL AND OPEN CHORAL SECTIONS All music in choral sections is own selection unless otherwise specified. Not all open sections exclude school choirs

SPECIAL CONDITIONS To be read in conjunction with General Conditions. 1. A Choir has freedom of choice of instruments to form accompaniment - these include tuned and un-tuned percussion (except in sections 807 & 807.1). However, musical directors should bear in mind that the item is "Choral" and the use of instruments must not be dominant. 2. No curtain is permitted during a performance between items. 3. Conductors optional. One conductor may conduct any number of choirs. 4. Conductors or musical directors are not to sing with the choir except in sections 805 (up to grade 4 Primary) & 812, 815, 815.1, 815.2 and 817. 5. An individual member of a choir is NOT allowed to take part in more than one choir competing in the same section EXCEPT where a student performing in a school choir may also compete in one other non-school group. 6. Up to two members may be interchanged between items, but the maximum number must not be exceeded on stage at any one time. 7. Items may be sung in any language, except as specified for section 816 Multicultural choir. 8. Accompaniment may be up to any THREE acoustic instruments which may include piano. Backing tracks are NOT permitted (except in sections 807 & 807.1). This allows for adherence to the composer’s musical intent to a particular piece. A piano will be placed to the left of the conductor and will remain on stage for all sections. Additional instruments are not permitted side stage. 9. Show Performance Choirs sections 807 & 807.1 and 807.2 and Gospel/Sacred/Worship Choir sections 815,815.1, 815.2 may have up to five (5) instruments as accompaniment which may include piano. Additional instruments are not permitted side stage. Amplifiers are permitted for instruments in sections 807, 807.1, 807.2, 815, 815.1 and 815.2 only. 10. A maximum of three (3) microphones for vocalists are permitted in sections 807, 807.1, 807.2, 813, 813.1, 815, 815.1 and 815.2 only

11. The turning on and off of lights, dimming lights, lighting projections, special effects etc. are not permitted in any choral sections. 12. Please note that there will be a piano placed left of stage (front stage OP side) which may or may not be used. This will remain in this place for all sections of the Choral competition. This will not be moved off or around the stage under any circumstances. 13. Costume changes are not permitted in any choral sections. As such there is only a maximum of 2 “helpers� per choir allowed back stage or in the Green Room. 14. Choral risers will be set up and left on stage for all choral sections except sections 807, 807.1, 807.2, 813.1 and 815.1. Whilst their usage is not compulsory they will not be moved between performances. 15. In all sections, music for the adjudicator is required. All bars must be numbered. Sheet music must be sent electronically at least 2 weeks prior to the competition and will not be accepted on the day of the competition. 16. COPYRIGHT: Please see our General Conditions 17. For any section to proceed a minimum of three (3) entries must be received, unless at the discretion of the RSSS. Where appropriate sections may be combined where the minimum entries are not received. 18. If a choir performs in more than one section, only ONE song may be repeated in the second section or any multiple sections, not a repeat of an entire programme. 19. An Australian arrangement is not an Australian composition. 20. Time restrictions must be adhered to. Performance time must not exceed the specified time limit for each section. Adjudication will cease when a time limit has been reached. 21. AUDIENCE. School groups of 10 or more, for a fee of $3 per student, may be part of the audience, providing they are effectively supervised. Students who are performing in an evening session would need to be registered as a school group and pay to be a part of the audience in an afternoon session. Prior arrangement for these education group bookings must be made with the RSSS office. 22. Age limit will be deemed as at the 1st January of the current year. Choristers entered in any secondary school aged choirs must be 18 years of age and younger or enrolled in high school. Proof of age and/or enrolment may be required if appeals are lodged.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS Primary School Choirs Adjudicator’s Encouragement Award RSSS Trophy awarded at the discretion of the Adjudicator to any participating primary school choir who best demonstrate the joy of choral performance and is worthy of encouragement.

802 Rotary Club of Wendouree PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHORAL CONTEST Open to all primary school aged students. Choirs to consist of no less than 15 voices. Each choir to present a program of 3 songs which must include the following; (a) Unison song; accompanied (b) Part song (c) A Cappella At least one selection of the program to be by an Australian composer. Time Limit: 10 Minutes First, $150 & Plaque; Second & Third, Plaques. Entry $55 Prize money and plaques for this section sponsored by the Wendouree Rotary Club in memory of their late member W.H Keith Young. 804 NOVICE PRIMARY SCHOOL CHOIRS (Primary/Junior School aged students). This section is open to primary school choirs who have not won a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in a choral section at Royal South Street Choral competition in the past 3 years. Choirs to consist of no less than 15 voices. Choirs are required to sing two contrasting songs; one of which must be by an Australian composer. Harmony optional. 805 PRIMARY SCHOOL CHOIRS (to Year 4) This section is open to junior primary school choirs only and is limited to students up to year 4 inclusive. Choirs to consist of not less than 15 voices. Two songs to be performed. Harmony optional. Sponsored by Wendouree Rotary Club in memory of its esteemed member, the late W.H. Keith Young. Time Limit: 8 Minutes First, $150, Second, $100; Third, $75. Entry $55 N.B. 805 & 805.1 may be merged at the discretion of the RSSS if entries are insufficient. 805.1 PRIMARY SCHOOL CHOIRS This section is open to primary school choirs only. Choirs to consist of not less than 15 voices. Two songs to be performed. Harmony optional. Sponsored by Wendouree Rotary Club in memory of its esteemed member, the late W.H. Keith Young. Time Limit: 8 Minutes First, $150; Second, $100; Third, $75 Entry $55 N.B. 805 & 805.1 may be merged at the discretion of the RSSS if entries are insufficient. 807 SHOW/PERFORMANCE CHOIR Primary/Junior School Open to Primary age choirs. Choirs to consist of no less than 15 voices. This section, focusing on entertainment, is intended to incorporate choral singing with other performance elements e.g. featured solos and duets, movement/ basic choreography. The major focus for adjudication will be on the choral element. Whilst soloists can feature in this section, they are not to dominate and perform for more than 25% of each song. A piano will be placed left of stage (front stage OP side) which may or may not be used. Hand-held props, instruments and costumes are optional. Up to five instruments with a maximum of three amplified instruments are permitted, plus the piano without microphone. Additional instruments and microphones will not be permitted side stage. Power is available on stage but musicians must supply their own amplifiers which must be tagged & tested prior to the performance. Three microphones for vocalists and a facility to play a backing CD will be provided. Choral risers will not be on stage during this section. Costume changes are not permitted. Programme to consist of a minimum of two contrasting styles of song, which may be contained within a medley. Choirs entering in this section will be required to confirm the number of amplified instruments and microphones at least two weeks prior to competition. Choirs in this section may be required to arrive at least 1 hour prior to the session to allow time for theatre sound technicians to confirm and check requirements prior to the commencement. Choirs will be advised at least one week prior to competition. Time Limit: 10 Minutes. First, $150; Second, $100; Third, $75 Entry $55

806 PRIMARY SCHOOL CHOIRS’ STANDARD COMPETITION This section is aimed at giving choirs the opportunity to perform on stage and to benefit from our adjudicator’s encouragement and advice. Open to choirs of not less than 15 voices. Only open to primary school choirs. Each choir to perform two pieces, a unison piece and a part song. Accompaniment may be up to three acoustic instruments (which may include piano). Choirs will be performing to achieve a critique and a standard – gold, silver or bronze. Multiple standards at any level may be awarded. All choirs will receive a medal & certificate stating the achievement attained. In order to provide greater clarity for assessing a choirs standard, it is anticipated that choirs entering in this section will be able to select one song of their own choice and one mandatory song from “School of Rock” that they must perform. The song will be relevant to primary age voices/choirs. Time Limit: 8 Minutes. Entry $55 Medals: Gold; Silver; Bronze; 815 GOSPEL/SACRED/WORSHIP Primary Open to any primary school aged ensemble minimum eight choristers. Any two songs in the genre of Gospel, Sacred and/or Worship songs are to be presented in a style suitable to the song being performed. Songs must include at least two part harmonies and unison. A maximum of three instruments in addition to, or instead of a piano may be used. Time Limit: 8 Minutes First, $150; Second, $100; Third, $75 Entry $55 817 CHRISTMAS CAROLS Primary Open to any primary school aged ensemble minimum 10 choristers. Each choir to present a program of 2 carols, which must include the following; (a) a Carol written in 1901 or earlier; (b) a Carol written after 1901. Songs should include at least two part harmonies and unison. A maximum of three acoustic instruments in addition to, or instead of a piano may be used. Time Limit: 8 Minutes First, $150; Second, $100; Third, $75 Entry $55

801 3BA INTERMEDIATE CHORAL CONTEST Open to all secondary school choirs. Choirs to consist of not less than 15 or more than 40 voices. Each choir to present a program of 3 songs. NOTE - All Choirs must present a, b & c in that order (a) 2 part song; accompanied (b) Unison song (c) Unaccompanied part song At least one selection of the program to be by an Australian composer. Time Limit: 10 Minutes, First, $200, Perpetual Trophy & Plaque; Second & Third, Plaques. 808 THE YOUNG PRIZE FOR OPEN AGE CHOIRS OR SECONDARY SCHOOL CHOIRS The Young Prize is in memory of our esteemed benefactors and dedicated choristers, the Late Mr WH Keith Young and the Late Mrs Amy Young OAM. Open to any combination of voices – Minimum of 20 voices. Choirs may repeat a single item performed in another section. Choirs to present a well-balanced program of no less than three pieces that includes part singing (at least 4 part harmony in two songs and 2 or 3 part in the others) in a contrast of styles and tempo. At least one selection of the program to be by an Australian composer. (a) Sacred part song – 3 or more parts (b) Part song – 4 parts (c) Part song – Own choice item unaccompanied. Accompaniment - Up to three single acoustic instruments. Prizes courtesy of the Young Trust. Time Limit: 12 Minutes. First, $800 & Perpetual Trophy; Second, $300; Third, $100. Entry $85 811 SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHOIRS Open to all secondary school choirs to consist of not less than 12 performers. Each choir to present a program of 3 songs; (a) Unison (b) Own selection (c) 3 or more parts At least one selection of the program to be by an Australian composer. Time Limit: 12 Minutes. First, $200 & Plaque; Second & Third, Plaques. Entry $55 Prize money kindly donated by Rotary Club of Ballarat East 815.1 GOSPEL/SACRED/WORSHIP Secondary Open to any secondary school aged ensemble minimum 8 choristers. Any two songs in the genre of Gospel, Sacred and/or Worship songs are to be presented in a style suitable to the song being performed. Songs must include at least two part harmonies and unison. A maximum of three instruments in addition to, or instead of a piano may be used. OPEN The following sections are open to any community choirs, school choirs, church choirs etc. Open Choirs Adjudicator’s Encouragement Award RSSS Trophy awarded at the discretion of the Adjudicator to any participating choir in the open age group sections who best demonstrate the joy of choral performance and is worthy of encouragement. 800 COURIER SMALL CHORAL GROUP Open Groups to consist of Minimum: 8 voices Maximum: 15 voices. Each choir to present a program of 3 songs (a) Part song; in 3 or more parts, accompanied (b) Part song; unaccompanied (c) Sacred part song; accompaniment optional Time Limit: 10 Minutes First, $200 & Plaque; Second & Third, Plaques. Entry $60 807.2 SHOW/PERFORMANCE CHOIR Open Choirs to consist of a minimum 12 choristers. This section, focusing on entertainment, is intended to incorporate choral singing with other performance elements e.g. featured solos and duets, movement/ basic choreography. The major focus for adjudication will be on the choral element. Whilst soloists can feature in this section, they are not to dominate and perform for more than 25% of each song. 813.1 ACAPPELLA Open Open to any ensemble minimum of ten (10) voices. Each group to present a program of a minimum of three items in three or more part harmony, to be delivered as a medley/continuous program along the lines of American/World College A Capella such as depicted in Sing it On and Pitch Perfect. Three microphones will be available for vocalists. Choral risers will not be on stage during this section. Time Limit: 10 Minutes. (Whilst raising awareness for a specific cause. (Victims of strokes, family violence, missing persons etc). Any combination of voices. Choirs to consist of no less than 10 voices. Programme to consist of two songs, own selection. (a) Part song (b) Unison song Time Limit: 8 Minutes First, $200 & Perpetual Trophy; Second & Third, Plaques. Entry $55 815.2 GOSPEL/SACRED/WORSHIP Open Open to any ensemble minimum eight choristers. Any two songs in the genre of Gospel, Sacred and/or Worship songs are to be presented in a style suitable to the song being performed. Songs must include at least two part harmonies and unison. A maximum of three instruments in addition to, or instead of a piano may be used. Time Limit: 10 Minutes First, $150; Second, $100; Third, $75 Entry $60 816 INDIGENOUS/MULTICULTURAL CHOIR Open Open to any choirs. Indigenous and Multicultural community choirs are encouraged to enter. Minimum 10 choristers. Choirs must prepare a minimum of two or maximum of three songs.
