You’ll probably want to make a beeline for the beach or the pool before you have even finished unpacking your bags. There’s plenty more at Costa Linda Beach Resort to keep you and your family busy during your stay. Sign up for some of the daily activities we offer and meet your fellow guests, take a sailboat or kayak out on the ocean or try your hand at a new water sport. Diving, snorkeling and even windsurfing classes can be arranged. You can stay in shape at the gym, and if all of this sounds too strenuous, plan a morning at the Spa and treat yourself to some pampering!

Have we got a week of fun lined up for you! Join in the activities organized for adults and children during the week. There’s something different every day, ranging from pool and beach games to arts and crafts, bingo and live steel band music for adults. Keep the children busy with jewelry making, finger painting and sandcastles, a tug of war and a scavenger hunt on the beach.
Activities are subject to change and for a complete lineup, check the activities board located adjacent to the Tour Desk in the lobby or visit the Activities booth below the kiddies pool, Ext. 7224.

Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba. Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children. It is also popular with local families. Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come, first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach. You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort Tips section of this magazine. Please take a few moments to read them. Eagle Beach is a public area and there are no lifeguards, so you swim at your own risk.

It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it. Painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sunblock with the SPF (at least 15), suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water. If you are going snorkeling, it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt. The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Remember that you can still get burned even when it is cloudy or breezy.

Es muy fácil broncearse al inicio de sus vacaciones, en especial si usted viene de un clima frío. Evite sobrexponerse al sol, tome sus precauciones y use protector solar con FPS (al menos 15), según su tipo de piel. Spend hours of watery fun in the resort pool, enjoying organized activities such as volleyball and pool aerobics. Or simply relax poolside and cool off in the Jacuzzis after your sunbathing session. Small children will love the kids’ pool. It is suitable for tots up to six years old. Pool and Jacuzzi hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please abide by the pool rules and help us keep the pool area clean.

Challenge your friends to a game! There are two lighted tennis courts located to the south of the main entrance of the resort. Court hours are from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. You may use the courts for one hour a day. Free tennis lessons are available, see daily schedule. Reservations can be made at the Front Desk or call Ext. 7202.

Tennis Courts
After swimming and splashing in the kids’ pool, take the little ones to the beachfront play area designed specifically for them. The kids’ play gym is suitable for children under the age of 12 and there are a variety of complimentary events during the week.
You must supervise your children at all times and ensure that there is no rough play on the equipment that may endanger their safety. The use of the installations is at your own risk.

The calm waters of Eagle Beach are ideal for kayaking and sailing. As a Costa Linda member or guest, you are entitled to the complimentary use of a kayak for one hour per suite. Reservations are taken at the Towel Desk or you can call Ext. 7224. Kayak hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The use of kayaks is at your own risk. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a maximum of two adults is permitted per kayak.

Keep up with your daily workout at the Fitness Center, where you’ll find a variety of exercise machines to help you stay in shape. The gym staff is on hand to help you and provide for your every need.
Please wear proper attire: shirt, shorts and sneakers. Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The minimum age for the gym is 15 years old. The gym is located beside the elevator landing (A-B Wing) on the lobby level and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

SERVICIOS, POLÍTICAS Y PROCEDIMIENTOS DEL RESORT
Por favor, tómese unos minutos para leer esta sección. Las reglas existen para asegurar que todos nuestros propietarios y huéspedes disfruten sus vacaciones y para ayudar al personal a mantener el resort en las mejores condiciones.
When you stay at the resort, you are not a guest in a hotel. You own your suite during the interval purchased. The resort is not a hotel nor is it managed as such. Accepting this fundamental difference is essential to understand why compensation is not permitted for any minor inconvenience you might encounter during your visit.
As in your home, unexpected problems can occur. If a drain clogs or the safe will not open, call the Front Desk for assistance. You can be assured the matter will be taken care of as quickly as possible, often within minutes. Furthermore, situations sometimes occur as a result of miscommunication or human error. Accidents will happen. Rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from Front Desk personnel should suffice.
Guests who insist upon complimentary compensation for inconvenience or honest mistakes must understand and accept the difference between hotel and resort management. Unlike hotels, Costa Linda Beach Resort is nonprofit; owner dues cover operating expenses only. There are no funds to cover free dinners, extra nights or gifts. The cost of such compensatory awards would come directly from owner dues.
Costa Linda Beach Resort is your vacation home. If a problem arises, please report it. Staff members will do everything possible to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, but they are not permitted to offer nor allowed to give free gifts. You can expect an apology for an inconvenience, but not a reward.
Cuando se hospeda en el resort, usted no es huésped de un hotel, ya que posee una suite durante el intervalo adquirido. El resort no es un hotel ni se maneja como tal. Comprender esta diferencia es clave para entender por qué no se permiten compensaciones por cualquier inconveniente menor durante su estancia.

On Sundays, your towels will be changed, toiletries will be replenished and trash cans will be emptied. We kindly request that you keep your room as clean as possible. Please do not hang towels or clothes on your balcony railing. Use the laundry line in the bathroom and the towel racks on the decks. A Housekeeping surcharge may be applied if your room requires additional cleaning.

Costa Linda Beach Resort has installed a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly “Smart Thermostat” system as part of its ongoing commitment to our owners and the community at large. The Smart Thermostat system senses when the suite is unoccupied and will raise the thermostat set point to an economical humidity control setting until the moment a guest returns to the room. Please allow a few minutes for the room to cool to your selected temperature upon your return. Please be aware that the air-conditioning unit will be interrupted if you should leave a door open. Aruba was first settled by an Amerindian tribe called the Caiquetios. Rock paintings and fragments of pottery dating from around A.D. 1,000 have been found on the island.

The first European to visit Aruba was the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and in 1636 it became a Dutch colony. Aruba is 19.6 miles long and 6 miles across, totaling 77 square miles or 193 square kilometers. Aruba is located 12° 30’ North Latitude; 68° 58’ West Longitude; 19 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, 990 nautical miles from Miami and 890 nautical miles from the Equator. Aruba is situated on the Caribbean Tectonic Plate. The island is made up of limestone-capped hills and ridges, with cliffs on the northern and northeastern coasts and coral reefs on the southern coast. Aruba’s terrain is almost entirely flat. The highest elevation, Mount Jamanota, is only 188 meters above sea level. Rock formations characterize the interior of the island.

Aruba’s currency is the Aruban Florin (AFL). The exchange rate for 1 USD is generally 1.75 AFL and if you buy USD, the exchange rate is usually 1.80 AFL. Dollars are widely accepted and there are ATMs throughout the island. All major credit cards are accepted on the island. Banks are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. non-stop, Monday through Friday.

The Aruban climate has little variation from the yearly average of a sunny 81°F (27°C), tempered by northeasterly trade winds. Aruba is out of the range of the Caribbean hurricanes. A word of caution, though — the sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and using protective sunscreen is highly recommended.

While most people in Aruba speak English and some Spanish, the official island languages are Dutch and Papiamento, a Creole language which is a blend of Spanish, Portuguese, African, Dutch, French, English and even Amerindian words. Derived from the Portuguese verb “papaer,” which means “to speak,” Papiamento originated during the slavery era as a pidgin lingo used by estate overseers to communicate with workers from different West African tribes.

Oranjestad, nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (Bay of the Horses), sprang up at the end of the 18 th century as the island capital. The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796. The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse and was named after the Dutch ruler of that time.
Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today, Oranjestad is a peaceful and picturesque town. Its streets are lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear.
Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Wilhelminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. The port hums with activity when cruise ships dock and an impromptu floating market springs up at the wharf every morning when island fishermen and farmers gather to sell their wares.
Located in Fort Zoutman, the History Museum has informative displays on the island’s past and local traditions. The Archaeological Museum on Zoutmanstraat is an introduction to the ancient inhabitants of Aruba and their legacy. Artifacts on display include pottery, art, stone tools and burial urns recovered at archaeological sites throughout the island. Visit the Kunsthuis art gallery, café and cultural center where the entertainment program includes concerts, theater, movies and exhibitions.

Eagle Beach is so beautiful that it would be hard to get tired of it. However, if you like beach hopping, the island has some of the finest pearly white strands in the Caribbean, each one with its own charm.
Located on the northwestern tip of the island, Arashi Beach and Boca Catalina are sheltered, making them popular snorkeling and swimming spots. Palm Beach is the island’s most famous and busiest beach and the location for many of its most popular waterfront restaurants and bars. Traveling south from Eagle Beach, Manchebo, Punta Brabo and Druif are all picturesque spots. Mangel Halto is a secluded cove that is ideal for swimming and snorkeling; the coral reef is so close to the coast that shore diving is possible.
The shallow and sheltered bays of Rogers and Baby Beach are popular with visitors and locals alike and boast shade huts and food stands. On the windward shore, the surf is stronger and the coastline opens up to offer dramatic views of wide beaches such as Boca Grandi and Wariruri. There are also extensive dunes, rock platforms and natural limestone arches, basins and sea caves created over the centuries by wind and waves.

SPANISH LAGOON
Legend has it that the Spanish Lagoon was once a hideaway for pirates. Whether this is true or not, the quiet waterway and the surrounding mangroves are a haven for wildlife, including herons, ospreys, owls and parrots. The lagoon is located between Pos Chiquito Bay and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mine. Follow the nature trail from the lagoon through the wetlands to Balashi and the Cunucu di Aloe plantation.
SPANISH LAGOON
La leyenda cuenta que la Spanish Lagoon (Laguna Española) fue alguna vez escondite de piratas. Protecting one third of the island’s surface, Arikok National Park is a patchwork of rolling hills covered in cacti and bent divi trees, strange rock formations (lava, quartz diorite and limestone), caves and a stretch of coastline with beaches, dunes and rock platforms. The arid landscape is home to a surprising variety of birds, including the endemic Shoko or Aruba burrowing owl and Prikichi or parakeet, orioles and hummingbirds, snakes, lizards, iguanas, wild donkeys and goats. Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years. Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants.
The park is also dotted with stone dwellings or cunucu which date from the Colonial period and housed the poorest settlers and their estate workers. A network of trails traverses the park and guided tours are available.

Other sites of interest on the island include San Nicolas, the second-largest town which grew up around the oil refinery and attracted workers from many of the British Caribbean islands. They kept their own customs, including calypso, carnival, steel bands and cuisine and the community has a unique ambiance. Visitors can go into the bush to explore the ruins of the 19 th century gold smelters at Bushiribana and Balashi or the rock formations at Casibari and Ayo.
The Donkey Sanctuary in Santa Lucia was founded in 1997 to provide a home for stray animals and for a glimpse of Africa, you can also call in at the Ostrich Farm.

LEARN HOW TO WINDSURF
The prevailing trade winds that blow across Aruba at a constant 15 knots cause choppy conditions along the windward shore, making beaches like Boca Grandi unsuitable for swimming and snorkeling, but highly desirable for experienced windsurfers, kiteboarders and surfers. Indeed, the island has its own windsurfing community and over the past few years, several local windsurfers have triumphed in international tournaments. The island also hosts the annual Hi-Winds Amateur World Challenge Windsurfing competition.
If you would like to learn how to windsurf and feel the thrill of coursing through the waves, ask at the Concierge Desk about classes available from local water sports centers. Most golfers make a beeline for the Tierra del Sol Golf Course on the northwest tip of the island. This 18-hole, par-71 course, designed by Robert Trent Jones II, is challenging and has spectacular views of the Caribbean and the surrounding countryside. There are also two 9-hole courses: the Aruba Golf Club near San Nicolas in the south and the Links at the Divi Resort. Mini golf provides hours of afternoon fun for the family.

If you are an old hand with a rod and net or you have always wanted to try fishing, the waters around Aruba provide plenty of challenges. Game fish such as sailfish, blue and white marlin, wahoo, tuna, bonito and dorado are plentiful year-round. You can charter a boat for a full or half day and the experienced crew will take you right to where the fish are running. Help preserve local fish stocks by following the catch-and-release policy.
