Editorial This month we say farewell to two members of our inaugural committee who, due to changing personal circumstances, no longer feel able to continue in their roles. They are Events Co-ordinator, Paul Graber and Secretary, Karen Thurman. Both have worked extremely hard to help build the group in its first year and will be greatly missed. I am sure members join the rest of the committee in thanking them for their contributions and wishing them well for the future.

Committee member Pauline Benbrook has agreed to take over as Secretary. We need to recruit an Events Co-ordinator - for more details please see the News Round Up. Our main feature this month is Mick Rawcliffe's report on last month's Liverpool and Crosby field trip. Thanks also to Michael Norman, Andrew Barrow and Laura Hacking for contributing their images.

The next newsletter, and last for 2016, will be out in the middle of December. I shall be taking a break over Christmas and the New Year, so the first newsletter of 2017 will be in early February, so if you have anything happening in January please let me know by 11th December.

Submissions The next newsletter will be out in mid December. The deadline for submissions is Sunday 11th December.

For articles, please keep your copy to 500 words or less and include two or three images at least.

We are interested in your personal reflections on a place, rather than a location guide. Please submit your images as jpegs, sized to 72 dpi and with 1200 pixels along the longest edge.

NEWS ROUND UP Events Co-ordinator Needed Following the resignation of Paul Graber, for family reasons, the Landscape SIG Committee is looking to coopt a new committee member to serve as Events Coordinator. This would be, initially, until the Group's first Annual General Meeting early next year, when all committee members will be required to seek reelection.

Paul has done a great job developing our events programme so far and has provided the following summary of what the role involves:-

OPOTY Shortlist Announced The shortlist for Outdoor Photographer of the Year has been announced, and it is a long one!

The competition received a record number of entries and, given the high standard, it has been decided to put more in front of the judges.

Short-listed images can be viewed here. Good luck to any Landscape Group members who have made it this far - do let us know how you get on.

Extreme Sleeps and Wild Nights Phoebe Smith, editor of travel magazine Wanderlust was t the first woman to sleep solo at the extreme points of mainland Britain.

In this talk, at the University of Bristol on 14th December, she will show you how you can make the most of your weekends here in the UK, unlocking some of the best places to wild camp.

She will share with you hard-won advice on what to pack, and how to stay safe in the wilderness. See here for details.





Put in place an active rolling programme of events for RPS Landscape Group members, covering as much of mainland Britain as possible, and with possible occasional longer excursions abroad Identify Group members who are ready and willing to organise field trips, and assist them by ensuring that all necessary publicity, paperwork and safety matters are dealt with From time to time, organise events led by ‘star’ names in the photography business Liaise with RPS Regional Groups to ensure that chosen dates do not clash with other events, and to maximise joint publicity opportunities Update the Group website as necessary to ensure that all details of forthcoming events are appropriately listed Play a full part in the RPS Landscape Committee.

EVENT REPORT Liverpool & Crosby Field Trip, 15th October

by Mick Rawcliffe Leaving Lime Street Station in the rain - but with an improving forecast - the group headed for Liverpool One, the prestigious shopping area midway between the station and the Albert Dock. Two places to stop – a modern zigzag staircase over an escalator – very photogenic, and on to the covered walkway from John Lewis to the multi storey car park. Again, very modern with lots of angled steel, glass, and it is also zigzag. Really good in flat light gives great tunnel vision along the walkway.

By the time we left John Lewis the sun was coming out, and we headed over to the waterfront. To the south we had the Echo Arena and Exhibition Centre, ahead the Albert Dock, and to the north the "Three Graces" and The Museum of Liverpool. By now the weather was perfect - sun, blue sky and white clouds. As usual, Liverpool was heaving, but that did not stop any photography.

Inside The Museum of Liverpool some of us photographed the beautiful spiral staircase in the centre of the museum and then we had lunch in the museum café, followed by a good chat.

After lunch, some headed off to Anthony Gormley's Another Place at Crosby whilst others decided to stay in the city to make more of its almost endless possibilities.

Exhibitions Liza Dracup: Landmarks Harrogate New work by Yorkshire photographer Liza Dracup inspired by the visualisation of the landscape of northern England found in the work of early photographers in the Mercer's photographer collection. At the Mercer Gallery, Harrogate, until 8th January 2017.

Fox Talbot: Dawn of the Photograph Bradford An exhibition exploring the life and career of Henry Fox Talbot, 'the father of photography'. Showing at the National Media Museum, Bradford from 18th November to 8th February 2017 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Edinburgh The exhibition, on tour from the Natural History Museum, is on show at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, until 19th February 2017.

Cold Places: Pictures from the Poles Chester This exhibition showcases photographs from awardwinning photographer Sue Flood's visits to the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, alongside Inuit pieces from her collection and a selection of her polar survival gear. At the Grosvenor Museum, Chester, from 19th November to 22nd February 2017.

The View from Here | Landscape Photography from the National Galleries of Scotland Edinburgh A selection of landscape photographs from the 1840s to the present day, drawn entirely from the permanent collection of photographs at the National Galleries of Scotland. At the Scottish National Portrait Gallery until 30th April 2017.

Joe Cornish Gallery Northallerton A tribute to Ansel Adams: 100 years of photographing Yosemite by Charles Cramer, Joe Cornish and Dave Chalmers is showing from 17 November to24 December 2016 The On Landscape Room is currently showing work

Conferences, Fairs and Festivals A Meeting of Minds 2016 Cumbria 18th - 20th November, Rheged Centre, Cumbria Organised by online magazine On Landscape, this year's speakers include John Blakemore, Charles Cramer, Mark Littlejohn, Simon Norfolk and more.

Chester Arts Fair The Deepbridge Chester Arts Fair 2016, returns for its fifth successive year from 18-20 November at Chester Racecourse. Visitors can view and buy art from over 90 galleries and artists presenting collections of visual art, photography, sculpture, glasswork and ceramics.

The Photography Show Birmingham The UK's largest photography show returns to the NEC, Birmingham from 18th to 21st March 2017.

Landscapes of Britain Dorset An exhibition of work by Dorset based photographer Robin Goodlad, who has been commended in Landscape Photographer of the Year for three years running. At Moors Valley Country Park Visitor Centre from 3rd December to 8th January 2017.

Ullswater, Aira Force & Borrowdale Thursday 17th November Aira Force car park

Adobe Lightroom for Landscape Photographers Saturday 25 March 2017, 9:45 to 4:15 Central London

This workshop will cover a complete landscape photography workflow, using the library and develop modules. This will include reviewing and choosing images, white balance, exposure, curves, lens corrections, sharpening, batch processing and exposure matching.

Walk through Aira Beck on to Gowbarrow and then the top of Yew Crag; visit Aira Force with various falls, rocks and rapids. After lunch move on to the Bowder Stone car park in Borrowdale to visit either Grange Crags, with sunset opportunities towards Derwentwater and Skiddaw, or King's How. See here for details.

Long Exposure Coastal Exploration Sunday 4th December

Shoreham The day will start at Shoreham harbour, West Sussex, making images of the harbour structures and the harbour wall. After two hours, the group will drive along to Shoreham beach and make images of the posts and breakwaters as well as break for lunch. The day will finish on Brighton beach with the opportunity to photograph the old west pier at sunset. See here for more details.

Julian Rouse LRPS, an Adobe Lightroom certified expert who has delivered many successful courses for the RPS, will lead the workshop. There will be a maximum of 8 delegates, to ensure a good level of personal attention.

The workshop will be given using a projector but, to get the best out of the workshop, it is recommended that you bring a laptop with Lightroom loaded. You can download the latest version from Adobe.com with a 1-month free trial.

A memory stick with the images on will be provided for the course and participants will be invited to bring along a raw file of their own to edit at the end of the day.

The workshop will be held in central London at the Whitechapel Idea Store 321 Whitechapel Road, E1 1BU, situated 100 metres from Whitechapel on the District, Metropolitan & over ground lines.

Cost: RPS landscape £50, RPS £60, Non-RPS £80 The course fee is for tuition only. Participants can bring a packed lunch or purchase lunch at the on-site cafeteria.
