Ethics Simulation Experience I was assumed as an operations analyst of an imaginary company and had to make decisions based on the available information. Our company made a product which fulfilled the FDA requirements and standards but the product was somewhat contaminated and did not meet our internal company standards. I was required to make an ethical decision about the product that what should we do about it? For this I had to look inside myself and think. Does a religious affiliation make a difference in the nature of the ethical issues it confronts? (Heller, 2003) My first reaction, as taught by my religion, was that we should recall all the products to prevent the consumers from any harm. This decision seems very nice to a common person but simulation taught me that there are some other factors to consider before making any decision. I learned that my first choice was not really in favor of customers as it did not allow to them the right to choose. Some decisions are difficult because they trigger us emotionally. They involve conflicts of interest, yielding to undesirable realities, or possibly pain and suffering for the deciders or for others. (Brenner, 2007) Another factor that came to my mind during the game was the expected reaction of my superiors or my boss. Few factors associated with this factor came to mind as well; my job and my family. After considering these factors, I knew my initial thinking wasn’t that right. Ethical and Legal Aspects Introduction Ethics are very important in today’s world but it was not the case when Ford made Pinto. That is why time and social values of that time must be kept in mind when examining this case. The question to be answered here is, did Ford act unethically when designing Pinto’s fuel tank? This case was so intensely discussed and analyzed because Ford did not change the fuel system for seven years only because of its cost-benefit analysis. Ford motor company stated that it did not change its fuel system because risk/benefit analysis was not in its favor. Ford stated that its reason for using a risk/benefit analysis was that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) required them to do so. (Leggett, 1999) We need to think that should we be using tools like cost/benefit analysis even when innocent lives are at stake due to extremely serious fault? Possible Solutions and Examples We could have done many things to fix this problem had we been managing Ford’s production unit in 1970. Most important of them was to make sure the cost benefit analysis was as accurate as it was thought. This analysis was the very reason this fuel fault was not corrected and if correctly presented, they could have understood that usage of an $11 waffle was more than reasonable. We can see below that Ford used an equal number of deaths and injuries for his calculation of cost-benefit analysis.

Introduction Ethics and ethical values are developed over long period of time and is an on-going process. One may be facing certain risks when making an ethical decision so he/she must be ready to face that issue. Our parents teach us some values and they become an integral part in our personality. My commanding officer always showed favoritism to his favorite people. Favoritism is being shown to another employee or applicant if a supervisor gives unauthorized


preferential treatment to any Navy civilian employee or applicant, or, takes specific personnel actions based on nepotism. (Bostic, 2008) My commanding officer showed his nepotism by different means such as by revealing work schedule to his preferred ones so that they may get the chance to avail overtime and make more money. Working days were also decided through consultation. Biggest of all, he granted promotions based on his personal bias instead of their performance. Another officer inspired me before my promotion to become an officer. She was a very good officer and tried to make this belief stronger in me that I should avoid the interference of my personal beliefs in my work. In her view, a good commanding officer supports his subordinates and stays behind them in every ordeal. Regardless of all this affiliation, he must not let his bias interfere in the matters of principle and stay neutral in case of any conflict.
