The Vicky-Anne Academy of Dance and Drama 25th Anniversary Celebration 2018 WELCOME….. Thank you so much for joining us tonight for our presentation of SHINE. This year we celebrate 25 years of The Vicky-Anne Academy which is such a huge achievement. We have enjoyed our celebrations, but we have still managed to achieve amazing exam results as well as success at Comps. We maintain our 100% pass rate with both the IDTA & LAMDA. As well as all this some of our pupils have been very busy performing around the county on both the amateur & professional stage. Grace Conant appeared in the Trinity players Pantomime and was awarded the Best Young Female Performance award by the Leicestershire Pantomime Alliance. Lisa & Fern Duffy continue to study at BOA and both took lead roles in the Concordia Youth Theatres production of Phantom of the Opera. Both girls have been busy performing at various events over the summer and then appeared in Rent at the Concordia in September. Jensen Bedford also appeared in Phantom at the Concordia and he is now studying at Leicester Centre for Performing Arts. He will be appearing in the Pantomime, Beauty and the Beast at the Concordia Theatre in January. Maisey Brewin took her first steps on the professional stage in Joseph and his amazing technicolour dream coat at Kilworth House Theatre alongside Miss Ashleigh who also appeared in the production. Well done to

Lucie Ellard who will be appearing in White Christmas at the Curve as Susan over Christmas so if you get the chance to go along and watch her please do. We are all super proud of each and every one of you for spreading lots of VA sparkle everywhere. As well as the pupils our teachers continue to shine too! Miss Roxanne has continued to perform with Beyond Repair at various events as well as taking more classes at VA’s such as Tumbling. Miss Ella appeared in Avenue Q at the Concordia and continues to sing around the country at various gigs and weddings. Ella continues to teach in schools and privately alongside her classes at VA’s. Miss Dee has been busy choreographing shows such as Phantom of the opera as well as performing in Rent herself. Miss Dee and Miss Ashleigh have launched CDP…Chasing Dreams Programme which provides performance workshops during holiday times. It is proving to be hugely successful so look out for the next one. Miss Ashleigh is now off on tour with Nativity but has taken her day off to be with us today. Miss Alice has graduated from LCPA with a Distinction for her level 6 extended Trinity diploma in Performing Arts. Alice has been modelling and dancing since graduation and has now started to take more classes for us at VA’s. Miss Lydia is doing further teaching studies as well as working full time. Miss Vicky-Anne has also been on courses with Progressing Ballet Technique and Twist & Pulse. Another sparkly year at VA’s and here’s to the next one! So sit back and enjoy the show………

The Vicky-Anne Academy of Dance and Drama 25th Anniversary Celebration 2018 25 years of sparkle…….

At the age of 3 Vicky-Anne started dance classes at a local school to build her confidence. Little did her mum and dad know what those first tentative steps would lead to. Vicky soon started more classes and began competing in festivals aged 4. Her love of performing was evident and only grew with time. Vicky began drama lessons at the age of 5 with Pricilla Morris and again loved to act and was soon taking exams and competing at festivals. At the age of 9 she was cast in the world premiere of the hobbit at the Phoenix Arts centre Leicester. Vicky continued to study and compete becoming the East Midlands song & dance champion aged 10 and the Variety Club Tap champion at 11 years old. Once Vicky had left school she enrolled on a Performing arts course and studied in Coventry. Whilst at college Vicky appeared in various musicals, plays and pantomimes. She also did a stint in an “s club 7” tribute as well as dancing with the hit man and her with Pete Waterman and various hit factory stars. Upon gaining her Btech in Performing arts Vicky studied towards her teaching qualification in Tap with the IDTA.In February 1993 she gained this and was now teaching at schools throughout the county. During these first months Vicky was a finalist in the Live Wire competition receiving a grant of £650 to help her set up her business from the prince’s trust. In April of that year she decided to start a few classes in Burbage.

These were held at the congregational church on a Thursday evening. She had 3 pupils turn up on the first day but continued to persevere. Her classes soon grew in numbers and another two evenings were added. Vicky’s love for dance and her kind manner were a hit with children and teenagers and her popularity grew. Her first show was held at Hastings high school in 1995 and she had around 40 pupils. Over the years the Academy grew, and she moved her shows to William Bradford College. In 2006 Vicky decided to put on a show at the Civic Hall Bedworth and has held her shows there ever since. In 1995 the old co-op hall became available to rent so Vicky, along with her Mum & Brian Geary went to have a look. The floor was covered in chewing gum and had ceiling to floor cobwebs. Despite this Vicky could see potential and decided to go for it. This enabled her to offer more classes and grow her school further. After weeks of cleaning, painting and drilling the new studio was ready to use. It was to prove a great success and housed the Academy for 21 years. Vicky had branches in Whetstone, Fleckney and Thurlaston all of which she transferred over to her Burbage base. The school saw various achievements from exams, shows and pupils going on to perform professionally as well as teach themselves. A couple of Vicky ‘s past students have since set up their own schools and she continues to support them in their journeys.

The Vicky-Anne Academy of Dance and Drama 25th Anniversary Celebration 2018 Vicky takes much joy and satisfaction from seeing her pupils do well, even if they haven’t gone on to perform, she keeps in regular contact with many of her past pupils and that contact is something she treasures. It means a lot to have played such a special part in a persons life and for them to remember that. Some even bring their children to classes now. Vicky herself has continued to train and study and is now a Fellow member of the IDTA and is qualified to licentiate level or above in ALL theatre dance subjects. Vicky also holds her ALAM & GSM certificates for acting and adjudicates festivals of dance. with In 2016 it was the end of an era as the Co-Op gave Vicky notice to leave as they were to turn her beloved studio into flats. It was a devastating time for the Academy as a lot of memories had been made there. However, Vicky being Vicky did not let this drag her down for long. She moved classes to Hastings high school for a while and looked to a new home for the Academy. This was to be a smaller unit on Burbage road which has now become the heart of the academy where lots of smiles & sparkle can be found. The hunt for a new place didn’t come without its upsets along the way but the show must go on as they say. Vicky is a firm believer of never letting anyone dull your sparkle! Despite the Academy’s great success over the years it has been tainted with personal sadness for Vicky with the sudden loss of her mum and best friend in 2012. However just days after her death Vicky was back at work putting on a show as there was no way she would let the pupils down. Since then Vicky has also lost other close family members and

cares for her dad who lives with her. In 2017 Vicky herself was diagnosed with NonHodgkin’s Lymphoma and underwent courses of Radiotherapy. Although her cancer cannot be cured Vicky continues to work hard for the Academy and inspires many with her strength, kindness and sparkle. I mean who else would take on the organising of the Town Carnival whilst having treatment for cancer ?!? Vicky is forever grateful for the love, support and kindness that people have shown her along this journey. Her parents have sacrificed many things in their own lives to help her and she hopes that her mum is proud of all she has achieved. The academy now has an excellent teaching faculty who will no doubt continue to nurture and train the future faces of VA for many years. Vicky-Anne is so very proud of all of her teachers and pupils and looks forward to seeing her present pupils spread their wings and fly.

Remember that Vicky-Anne’s was just a big dream to a little girl once so keep dreaming, keep believing and most of all Sparkle!!!

Testimonials My daughter Olivia Bevington started at the Dance school at 2 1/2 and she has enjoyed every minute with a family dance school atmosphere, Olivia has gained so much in not just dance but friendship and confidence. I myself as mum have enjoyed my involvement including chaperoning back stage and helping organise fundraising and carnival floats. I can’t think of a better school to be involved in and I have made friendships too and being an ex dancer myself I love that Olivia loves it as much as she does now at 11 years old. Joanne Bevington x

A fabulous dance school with creative teachers. All four of my daughters attend this academy and have been attending classes now for over four years. The teachers are caring, thoughtful, whilst also remaining professional and good educators. There is a great sense of family and friendship amongst the teachers and also the dancers themselves. There are a wide range of classes available to suit different ages and abilities. Another great advantage to the academy is the payment plan option and the understanding that Vicky-Anne gives to larger families or those on a lower income. Strongly recommend! Jacqui Dixon It's hard to remember back to the time before Vicky-Anne's but this year will be the very last show for Fern & Lisa. I can honestly say the girls would not be where they are today without the support and teaching they have received from Vicky and all the teachers over the past 14 years. Thank you for always pushing them to be the best they can be, I hope they make you proud. Marianne Duffy xxx Vicky has been my friend for over 35 years and I have watched her develop & build the academy to what it is today. I have so many special memories of the academy & it is a really special place to be. Here's to another 25 years of VA dance. Lots of love Gemma Smith xx I joined VA’s when I was 14 and low in confidence. Vicky showed me I could dance and made me enjoy it again. Now 20 years on my little girl has joined VA’s. I hope she gains as much as I did all those years ago. Thanks Vicky for the faith you have in all your pupils. Claire Rowe x Vicky-Anne and her team are the perfect dance family. Would highly recommend to anyone. Congrats on 25yrs!! Love the Simmerson’s xx www.vickyanneacademy.co.uk
