Women that Connect Local Women’s Business Networking Group

A professional women’s business networking group for local businesses is proving to be extremely successful and is well into its 2nd year and currently has 33 members. The Women that Connect Group is an exclusive membership group meaning only one member per profession/industry is invited to join meaning that the Group has a good, diverse mix of businesses. The launch meeting in September 2016 was a great success and subsequent meetings have proved similarly successful. It is certainly proving a great way for Leicestershire and Warwickshire women business owners to meet. The monthly lunchtime meetings, held at Ullesthorpe Court Hotel, are friendly and relaxed yet professional allowing members to build new business relationships whilst cementing existing ones and form new friendships.

Sue Hambleton of Mellow Marketing spoke at the March lunch meeting. Sue gave an interesting presentation on her life journey and background to how she has reached this point in her life and business. For those of us there it was a really personal presentation. As has been said a few times since the launch meeting we are privileged to hear such personal presentations. It was again agreed that this is a fabulous group and so great that members feel happy to speak so personally. Guests are welcome to attend a maximum of two meetings a year as long as there is no clash with a business who is already a member of the group. If you are interested in joining this successful group, please contact Debbie of Roundabout Hinckley on 07751 211019 or email her at debbie@roundabouthinckley.co.uk for further information and to see if the business slot is available.

The Netherlands has a rich and diverse culture, partly due to it’s colonial history and this is reflected in it’s cuisine which features spices and recipes brought back from what was formally known as the Dutch East Indies and is now modern day Indonesia. This dish has become one of Holland's trademark dishes.

Satay Chicken Skewers (Kip Satay)

Ingredients

4 Chicken Breasts Whole tin of Coconut Milk 200g Smooth Peanut Butter 1tbs Fish sauce 1tbs Sweet Soy Sauce 1tbs Brown Sugar 1tbs Garlic Puree 1 finger sized Red Chilli Salt (to season) Lime Juice Mixed leaves to garnish Wooden or metal skewers

Serves 6 to 8 people, preparation time 35 mins, cooking time 25 mins

Tip If using wooden skewers, soak in water for 10 minutes before using as this will prevent them from burning when cooking.

Method 1. Based on 2 skewers per person, chop the chicken into half inch cubes and place on the skewer until three quarter full and set aside. 2. For the sauce, place all the ingredients into a large saucepan and stir whilst bring to the boil. After a few minutes the sauce will thicken to a paste-like consistency. Once at this stage, remove from the heat. 3. Place skewers on a baking tray and grill on a medium to high heat for 10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Turn skewers once whilst cooking. 4. Place skewers on a bed of mixed leaves and pour over the Satay sauce. Thanks to Mike Allen

Martin & Co Hinckley Office 99-109 Castle Street, Hinckley, Leics, LE10 1DA

01455 636349 hinckley@martinco.com

Welcome to our Newsletter Hello everyone. Would you believe the sunshine has finally arrived! It’s high season in the property world, and we’re busy adding properties to the sales and rental market. It’s all good! If you are thinking of selling or renting your home/property, and are unhappy with your current agent, why not try us! We’re competitive and provide excellent customer service, and that’s why “The way to go, is Martin & Co”.

Martin & Co’s top tips to add value to your home! From extensions and kitchen upgrades to furnishings, here’s a few tips of how to set your house apart from all the others – and get it sold. 

Have a loft conversion: The key thing is to make sure access to the loft is easy and that the conversion fits the rest of the house, rather than looking grafted on. This will add on average an extra 12.5% to the selling price.

Build a conservatory or extension: Extending your living space is always a good idea, but the danger is that your conservatory ends up looking like something just bolted on the back. Make sure the conservatory matches the style of the rest of the house. A conservatory can add around 7% to the value, while a full-blown extension adds 11%.

Refurbish the front door: Does it look smart? If not, buy a new doorknob, brass letterbox or a stainless-steel house number. Check around the area and take photographs of other people’s front doors. You’ll get some great ideas that way.

Hang mirrors in the hall: The hall is the first thing the buyer sees, yet it is often narrow, cramped and full of prams, bikes and trainers. A mirror on either side of the wall makes it seem magically bigger.

Get a new kitchen: If you are only going to improve one room, make it the kitchen. This has now become the showpiece area of the home. We don’t just cook in it, we do homework in it, we watch television in it and hold dinner parties there. Install equipment that is as up to date as possible, so it won’t look outmoded in 10 years. And make sure the price bracket of your kitchen matches the price bracket of your house. There is no point putting a £25,000 kitchen in a £250,000 house; you won’t see your money back. Equally, put a £10,000 kitchen in a £1 million house, and you will drag down the value. Typically, a new kitchen will add 4.6 % onto the value.

Martin & Co Hinckley Office 99-109 Castle Street, Hinckley, Leics, LE10 1DA

01455 636349 hinckley@martinco.com

When selling your home, here’s a few tips of what to avoid! 

Outgrowing your street: If houses in your street cost £250,000, don’t build an enormous extension and ask £400,000. People looking for a £400,000 house won’t want to live in a £250,000 street.

DIY bodging: If you make a very visible mess or bodge-up, it raises all sorts of questions in the buyer’s mind about all the more crucial bodge-ups they can’t see, for example, electrics and plumbing.

Replacing all the furniture: There is no need. It may look nice, but will it add a penny of value to your house? No, it won’t.

Too big a television: We have seen far too many living rooms that have been overpowered by the size of the plasma screen.

Too many bedrooms: There’s a substantial difference in price between a two, three and four bedroomed house. After five, though, there’s hardly any.

If you’ve invested money into a property, why would you hand the keys over to a cheap agent? We find this very strange and currently the competition is charging from 4% upwards for the fully managed service – which is just nonsense. Maybe Landlords feel that managing a property is money for old rope, but in reality, it’s the hassle factor that is being dealt with £300,000 and a fair charge for the time involved should be paid for. At Martin & Co we’re a licensed ARLA letting agent that has client money protection insurance. Excellent customer service coupled with value for money pricing ensures that our Landlords and their tenants are looked after correctly. If you have a property to rent out, don’t choose cheap for the sake of it, use a qualified agent and the way to go is Martin & Co If you would like to market your property for Sale call 01455 636349, or email hinckley@martinco.com

The me&dee registered charity was formed in 2006 to create special memory experiences when time is short or precious. To date, more than 2,000 families have been helped through the support of our charity. I am the founder and CEO of the charity. Before setting up the charity, I had had 18 major operations performed, some of those life saving, but causing huge amounts of scarring and leaving me with two stoma bags. My cousin Delia had cancer. We were amazed at how many charities had huge amounts of tick box forms, excluding many including myself, who could not tick a box when applying for help, and a huge need to justify yourself, and also, little personal interaction. Delia and I decided to break this mould, making the application form very simple, no tick boxes and support at the end of the phone 24/7. Sadly Delia passed away at the end of 2005. I continued with me&dee as a legacy to her, and run it in the way that we both envisioned. No awards are looked for, I have remained unsalaried and working 7 days a week for the 12 years of our charity. What do we do? We have a static caravan on a lovely site at the seaside town of Mablethorpe. This is Dee’s Den. It is a large luxury caravan, with central heating, large decking and beautiful views across lakes and woods, in a very quiet area. Included in the holiday is a sea front new and modern beach hut with running water and electricity. The back of the beach

Charity Page hut opens on to Queens Park with boating lake, café, large paddling pool and host of activities giving the best of both worlds, beach front seclusion at the front, activities at the rear. This is for families who are facing short and uncertain futures together. Our criteria is for anyone of any age with any life threatening, life shortening and terminal condition. In this way, we help many families facing short and uncertain futures who cannot tick cancer and leukaemia and brain tumour boxes, such as those with aplastic anaemia, MS, Cerebral Palsy and a whole host of conditions. We have a warm and cosy chalet on the Chalet Park in Mablethorpe. This is Daz’s Den and run as a legacy to my friend who took his life after serving for 13 years. The chalet is a lovely little retreat, open lounge and kitchen, double and single bedroom with every luxury including orthopaedic mattresses, shower and toilet and a large decking area. This is on a small, quiet site and only minutes walk from miles of sandy beaches with the privacy of the sand dunes areas. We are always looking for volunteers to help with bag packs, charity collection days, to have a collection pot in their premises, and can show where every penny goes. There are small ways to help; a beach hut is £50 a week, a memory box £20, our lovely memory elephant and lion, Hope and Hero are £25 to buy for a family. Scheme gives hope to our vulnerable residents Leicester Animal Aid would like you to meet the adorable Fern and Sophie who are able to enjoy life in a loving forever home thanks to the Centre’s Medical Foster Scheme. Yorkshire terrier, Fern is an incredible 14-years young and is now spending her twilight years in her medical foster home whilst receiving treatment for her condition which includes high blood pressure.

Residents waiting for their forever homes Sunrise Ruby, is a gorgeous 10-year-old German Shepherd who loves a comfy duvet and plenty of yummy treats. She’d love a new home where she’d be the only pet.

The lovely, seven-year-old Sophie, who has medication for kidney disease, waited patiently in the Centre for over six-months until her perfect match came along. The Scheme, which commits to paying the veterinary treatment related to the animal’s condition, costs thousands of pounds each year to run and is helping to support more than 40 dogs and cats in medical foster homes. For a number of years we have organised a sponsored tandem skydive to raise much-needed funds to support the Scheme.

Handsome three-year-old Jinx came to the Centre as a stray and is looking for a loving home. He is full of energy and very playful but still has time for cuddles. He would like a home where he is the only pet.

This year’s event is taking place on Saturday July 21. If you’d like to take the first step in what could turn out to be a giant leap for you and what will mean the world to the most vulnerable of our animals, you can download an information pack at: www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk/skydive or call us on 01455 888257 or drop us an email at info@leicesteranimalaid.org.uk If you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground then you can always sponsor one of our high-fliers!

Testimonials Received Fencing Services

“Having had a tree felled in our garden due to the damage its roots were causing to the driveway, we then needed to get the driveway repaired. John Smith of Fencing Services, a long time advertiser with us, was the obvious choice as he also offers driveway and landscaping services. The service provided was first class from when John called round to take a look and quote for the work, to when John and his friendly team arrived to do the job. They lifted the block paving, removed all the offending roots, then re-laid and re-sealed the drive leaving it looking as good as new. John exceeded our expectations and did an excellent job. Fencing Services are clearly skilled at what they do and I can highly recommend them if you are looking for any fencing or landscaping work”. Debbie Heron, Roundabout Hinckley owner and editor
