Lasting Power of Attorney What happens when I can’t make decisions for myself? Many of us would like to plan for a time when we need help making decisions. A stroke, a heart attack, Alzheimer’s disease or a severe accident can leave us dependent upon other people to help make crucial choices in our lives. Or we may need to give someone decision-making power for us if, say, we’re going to be in hospital or abroad for a time and can’t easily carry out decisions for ourselves. To plan for the future you can create a lasting power of attorney (LPA). An LPA is a simple way for you to choose someone you trust to make decisions for you. LPAs can be a lot less expensive than other ways for people to make decisions on your behalf and can make things much easier for other people in your life than the alternatives. Who might need an LPA? Anyone potentially. Common illnesses such as cancer or heart disease can leave us reliant on other people to make decisions happen. More than 800,000

7

7

people in the UK have dementia, and the Alzheimer’s Society predicts this will rise to more than one million by 2025. As for accidents, every 90 seconds someone is admitted to hospital in the UK with a brain injury - traffic or contact-sport accidents are examples of what can go wrong. How does an LPA work? An LPA is a legal document that you create. In your LPA, you name the people you’d like to make decisions for you when you don’t want to or can’t make some decisions yourself. You can make an LPA for decisions about your property and money or about your health and welfare. When does an LPA start working? You can create an LPA to be used only if you can no longer make your own decisions - known as losing ‘mental capacity’. Or you can make an LPA to be used for certain decisions, financial ones, while you still have mental capacity.

Local Recruitment Company Installs New Defibrillator in Hinckley Town Life-saving medical equipment is now just minutes away for anyone who suffers a cardiac arrest in the vicinity of the Hinckley Branch of S&L Personnel on Coventry Road in Hinckley. Located near the town centre opposite the site of the old leisure centre, the new defibrillator (Automatic External Defibrillator or AED) is a device that gives a high-energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. Providing an essential and potentially life-saving, stage in the treatment of anyone suffering a Cardiac Arrest, defibrillators are easy to operate with step-by-step instructions for members of the public to use in an emergency. They’re becoming an increasingly common sight in public places across the country and have already saved many lives. Andrew McQuillan, Director of S&L Personnel said: “We are proud to provide this new Defibrillator for

the community and I’d like to thank KLB Electrical for the installation. Let’s hope it’s never needed but should an emergency arise this side of town it could ultimately save someone’s life. I would urge people to be aware of all of the defibrillators in your local area.” Mr McQuillan also added “All of the staff based at our Hinckley Branch will be trained in the use of AED’s should they ever be required to offer assistance in an emergency.” Responsible for around 100,000 deaths in the UK every year, sudden cardiac arrest is one of the country’s biggest killers but quick and easy access to a defibrillator can significantly increase the chances of survival. AED’s can be used in a medical emergency by phoning 999 and quoting the box number and location to the operator to retrieve a unique code

Welcome to our Newsletter Brexit! Are you as fed up as I am with the negativity surrounding the subject? I get asked all the time about how Brexit will affect house prices, so if you just bear with me while I retreat into my basement in the shop, don a cape and muster the crystal ball - “the mist is clearing” …like everyone, no one really knows. However, you can draw upon experience. House prices go up and down, and if they go down they will eventually recover. Whilst some people seem determined to talk us into a recession, let’s just look back at what happen in 2008. Interest rates were at 6%, fuel prices were high and the banks stopped lending to each other. So, ten years on and with Brexit looming where are we now? Well, again there’s the negativity of being talked into a recession, but interest rates are low, immigration is still high, housing stock is low, and as long as the money continues to flow then I’m going to be optimistic. Of course, I could be wrong, because no one really knows, and I’ll return my crystal ball back to Argos. Exciting isn’t it?

Pets and selling houses can be challenging. I love pets, and it’s a good job because during my working day I see all sorts of animals and I’m regularly jumped all over by most of them. If you see a photograph on Rightmove with a pet in it, then it’s probably one I’ve taken. I always try to get them on somewhere. When it gets to the viewing stage though, it can be problem. Although they’re cute and sometimes cuddly, let’s be blunt here - they smell! Even if the owner can’t smell them, the viewers will, and it’s not a good impression when they’re trying to look around the house and distracted by a pong. So, half an hour before the viewing, get the pets out, hoover any hairs away, open the windows and circulate the air. Even in Winter! Failing that there’s always an air freshener. It’ll help, and the viewer can give their full attention to your property.

01455 636349 hinckley@martinco.com Energy Performance Certificates – what are they? Whenever a rental or sale property is advertised then an EPC is required. It lasts for ten years and is a full report on the energy efficiency of your home, or in most cases summarised by a graph. How do they work, and how can they help me choose the right property? Think of heat loss and how inefficient a property. The lowest is grade G, built in 1850, solid walls, single glazed windows, open fires, no insulation anywhere. The highest is grade A, modern build, insulation everywhere, solar panels. Somewhere in the middle depending on the build, insulation and type of heating will be your home. An average 1930s three-bedroom semi will be a D, but if it’s an E or F then it has single glazing and/or an old heating system. Trust me, I’m an Estate Agent. Sharp suit and shiny shoes, that’s us! Invite three agents to value your home and work out the average valuation. Some are too low, others too high. “How can my house possibly be that price when a similar house down the road sold for more?”. It’s a minefield isn’t it? Some agents value reasonably, others are over optimistic and some downright misleading. We like to think we value as the market sees it and compile our evidence accordingly. One tool that may be useful for future sellers is this triangle. At the top is the example price of £350k and at the bottom is £290k with the equivalent of potential viewings expected. The difference between each price could be months, or mortgage payments. You choose, either way, over valuing will cost you. £300,000 Martin & Co have partnered with BHW Residential to provide a “Legally Prepared” service for our buyers and sellers. So, what is it? “Legally Prepared” costs £35 plus VAT and could save up to three weeks on the sale. Whilst the property is being marketed, the following will be conducted and when an offer is agreed you’re immediately ready. BHW will • • • • •

St Mary’s with St Francis, Hinckley Christmas Tree Festival 29th Nov - 3rd Dec 2018 This year sees the 8th annual St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival. Last year’s event was extremely successful attracting over 2000 visitors to the beautiful church in the centre of Hinckley. To help make this year’s festival even bigger and better, the committee would like to invite as many newcomers as possible to join in the festivities. A bigger event with more trees will provide a higher profile for you when you exhibit a tree, sponsor an event or provide a raffle prize. You have free reign on how you decorate your tree and how much you want it to represent your business, community group, activity, school or family. Money raised throughout the festival will go towards the renovation and on-going maintenance of the church and raffle tickets will be available throughout the festival.

We at Roundabout Hinckley are delighted to be designing and producing the programme for the Christmas Tree Festival for the fourth year running. The Festival launches on Thursday 29th November at 6:30pm and the lights will be turned on at 7pm. There will be music and entertainment from the church’s robed choir and band. There will be mulled wine and mince pies available. There will be further events during the Festival. Further details and information are available on the church’s website www.stmaryshinckley.co.uk

Women that Connect is an exclusive membership group meaning only one member per profession/industry is invited to join meaning that the Group has a good, diverse mix of businesses. It currently has 36 members.

Another member, Kate Jordin of The Bakewell Tart, made a beautiful cake to celebrate the second-year anniversary. The cake was in the shape of a handbag with two women helping each other climb up the side, demonstrating the support that group members give each other.

Every month each member speaks about their business followed by a 2-course lunch and drink. This is then followed by a presentation by one of the members giving more details about their business. Help spread Christmas joy to Leicester Animal Aid residents Tigger We know it may feel a little early to be thinking about Christmas, but adorable Albert, and all the dogs and cats at Leicester Animal Aid, already know what’s at the top of their Christmas list - a new loving family and a home to call their own. Whilst we may be celebrating over the festive period with friends and family, Albert a nine year old Labrador cross, will be spending his second Christmas at the Centre. He is hoping that he will be made to feel very special like last year when he received a cosy blanket and some treats. This was down to the kindness of people who gave Christmas presents to all the dogs and cats at the Centre.

Your gift will be delivered by LAA’s very own Santa Paws to their kennels or cat pod and will help them to feel the warmth and joy of Christmas. Gifts include special food, treats, toys, blankets, beds or your donation may go towards a larger gift such as a sandpit or ball pit that we can share with a friend. If all the dogs and cats are lucky enough to get a present, donations will be used to buy the residents gifts and enrichment items throughout 2019.

Wishing you a purrfect Christmas and a pawsome New Year!

Will you give £6 to buy a present for a dog or cat so that all our residents feel loved this Christmas? If you would like to give Albert, and his fellow dog and cat residents, a present this Christmas you can donate online at www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk/christmasappeal or call the Centre on 01455 888257.

HINCKLEY SALVATION ARMY, in Lancaster Road next to the library, is a Christian church and a registered charity. With one of our mottos being “with heart to God and hand to mankind” we have been serving the local community here in Hinckley for well over a century. All are welcome to attend our Sunday meetings (worship services) which start at 10am and last around an hour. Our Minister, Major Carol Evans, leads this adult service but always provides something within it for the children too so that young and old can attend and enjoy worship together. Refreshments are served afterwards in the community lounge offering an excellent way make lasting friendships. There are other worship opportunities during the week with a regular prayer meeting on Wednesday mornings and between September and January we are planning to run a free ALPHA Course, a good opportunity to engage in a gentle introduction to Christianity and its relevance in today’s world. As part of our service to others we run a number of weekday community groups. On Monday and Saturday mornings between 10am-12pm we welcome people to call into our informal coffee mornings. People come to enjoy refreshments and a chat before going off to do their shopping or waiting for a bus to take them home. Our newest venture is our craft club held twice a month on the first and third Mondays from 2pm to 3.30pm. This is a very informal time where all are welcome to bring along your knitting, cross-stitch or other hobby and just enjoy pursuing your favourite craft interest in the company of others. Feel free to just turn up to meet new friends! One of the groups that has been running for almost twenty years is our weekly short mat bowls club. This is held on Tuesdays in the upstairs community room from 9.45am to 11.45am. Anyone can come along to this pleasant way of spending a Tuesday morning. Why not try it? On Tuesdays and Fridays we have a Day Centre for Older people, a very relaxed atmosphere where up to 40 people can come and chat over a cup of tea or coffee and then enjoy the beautiful 2 course meal provided by our chef with assistance from a team of caring volunteers. We often have a short waiting list for this, so if you or someone you know would benefit from attending, please call us for more information and to register your interest.

On Thursdays during term time we run a Parent and Toddler Group. Parents, Grandparents and Childminders come along with their children. The children enjoy plenty of interaction and fun whilst learning and the adults enjoy fellowship with one another as well as the refreshments provided. There are monthly fellowship groups which offer an opportunity to meet new friends and at the same time enjoy the variety of interesting activities that are organised. Ladies Fellowship takes place on the 1st Monday of the month and Men’s Fellowship on the 4th Monday of the month. Both groups are thriving and if you are looking for an interesting & informative evening in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere one of these this is for you. Both start at 7.30pm. A big part of our “hand to mankind” service involves care given to people who are homeless or sofa surfing, and others who have simply hit on hard times. We are able to provide clothing and other necessities of life. We have shower facilities and can offer food to those who are hungry. We work very closely with other local churches under the umbrella of the Trussell Trust Foodbank. We are able to issue the necessary vouchers for this service and we ourselves are open on Tuesday afternoons between 1pm - 3pm as a Foodbank distribution centre. We can’t meet all the needs of all people, but we are always willing to try and will endeavour to signpost people to the right place . We hold a Friday market stall outside our premises on Lancaster Road, from 9.00am until 1.00pm. Donations of good quality goods can be brought in on Friday mornings or we can collect at a time to suit. There are often volunteer opportunities available. If you are interested in offering time to support any of the above activities, please call in to register your interest so that we can discuss when an opportunity arises. For more information on any of the events at The Salvation Army or to register an interest in volunteering , please call us on 01455 251008. Leave a name and number, if there is no answer, and we will get back to you as soon as possible. If the Salvation Army can bring support in any way, please get in touch.
