A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Charity Article Leicester Animal Aid helping dogs and cats down on their luck Can you help rehome a dog or cat from Leicester Animal Aid?

Unfortunately, some of the canine and feline residents at LAA end up staying far longer than we would like. We would love to see them in their forever home. If you can give the animals below a chance at a happy family life, then please get in touch with the centre for more information.

Charlie Brown and Peanut – 6 year old Standard Poodle and 4 year old Toy Poodle Charlie Brown and Peanut are the coolest double act around! Charlie Brown is a laid back, loving guy who enjoys playing and running around with his toys. Peanut is a little shy at first, but bonds quickly with his human once he has gained confidence. He is a very loyal boy and loves fuss and cuddles and sitting on your knee. This pair absolutely adore each other and need to be re-homed together. Maybe you have a home with older teenage children or are around for a large part of the day, so you can keep this duo company. They would love a large, secure garden for exercise as Charlie does not enjoy exercise or walking in the presence of other dogs, apart from his best buddy Peanut.

Poppy – 8 year old DSH cat Poppy was a stray that turned up in a couple‟s garden bedraggled and thin. They took her in and gave her warmth and good food. Unfortunately their circumstances meant they couldn‟t keep her so they brought her into LAA. Since then, she has had a dental and an eye removed as a preventative measure due to a congenital birth defect. Through all of this Poppy has been an angel and is the sweetest, most gentle cat. She is like a teddy bear as you can pick her up and cuddle her and she loves it. She needs to be a house cat due to her being deaf and would be a fantastic companion for somebody who wants a loving gentle girl. She also needs to be an only cat as she is not keen on any competition for sitting on your knee! For more information about Charlie and Peanut or Poppy, then give us a call on 01455 888257 or come and visit us. We are open from 10am until 2.30pm daily. This festive season, we would love to spoil the cats and dogs at the centre and you could help to make their Christmas a little brighter by donating the money you would‟ve used to buy your Secret Santa presents: via Just Giving at http://campaign.justgiving.com/charity/laa/secretsantapaws, or at the centre. If you would like to buy a present directly for the animals at LAA, their Amazon Wish List can be found by visiting

View from the stand (well Armchair really!) Almost a third of the way through the season and Leicester City are top of the Premier League. Who would have thought it? Certainly none of the so-called experts and pundits who almost universally tipped them for a relegation battle following the change of Manager in the summer. Of course, there is an awfully long way still to go. History shows that the ‘bigger’ clubs tend to rise to the top as the season progresses as their greater quality and squad depth allow them to cope better with the inevitable injuries, suspensions and general fatigue that comes from playing week in, week out. I don’t think anyone seriously expects Leicester to maintain their current position, especially with the seemingly difficult run of fixtures coming up. But, at least they start that run in a position of strength. They can approach those games with great confidence knowing they can afford to drop a few points and still be in a pretty good position at the turn of the year. At the moment they must feel like they are a match for anyone. It was good to see them finally keep a clean sheet and Ranieri duly treated the players to their promised pizza. The fact that they made a day of it, got the players making their own pizza and got the TV cameras in to film the Manager doing the waiting duties showed the great spirit in the club at the moment. It is also good to see the club are keeping their feet on the ground. The Manager is still talking about targeting the 40 points he feels will mean they are safe from relegation. Hopefully he will be able to adjust that target upwards sometime in the future and I am sure that privately he will be looking for much more than that. But it is good Management to keep expectations realistic and then hopefully, over achieve. We will certainly have a better idea of how the season will pan out after the busy holiday period coming up. A special mention must go to Jamie Vardy. At the time of writing, after the Man Utd game, he has broken Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record by scoring in 11 consecutive Premier League games. What an achievement that is, especially for a player who was still playing non-league football as recently as 2012. After a relatively (and understandably) slow start at Leicester, his massive improvement, even since last season, has been remarkable. Credit must also go to the club for spotting him at Fleetwood Town and having the courage to spend a record £1 million on a non-league player. One wonders what his price tag is now although no Leicester City fan will want to find out! It has been an encouraging if unspectacular start to the season for Leicester Tigers with four wins out of five in the Premiership and two bonus point wins in the European Cup. The performance against Stade Francais under the lights at Welford Road was particularly good. Tough fixtures lie ahead with back to back games against Munster in December. Away wins in Europe are hard to come by so the home match against Munster on the Sunday before Christmas will be vital. There is bound to be a big crowd, the Irish will come over in big numbers so it should be a fantastic, festive atmosphere. There will also be the chance for some late Christmas shopping at the Christmas market held at the ground prior to the game. Another big name signing, former South African Captain Jean De Villiers arrives in December. De Villiers played for the Springboks 109 times but retired from international rugby after breaking his jaw in the recent world cup. His experience and quality will be a massive plus for the Tigers.

New Venture Helps Small Businesses in Leicestershire

13

A Newbold Verdon man has launched a new venture aimed at helping small businesses in the area to connect online. After nearly 20 years in marketing and communications, John Cooper has set up „it‟seeze Leicester,‟ a website design company. John said, “I know as well as anyone how tough the marketplace can be for a start-up business, so I wanted to do something that I would enjoy as well as something that could benefit the local business community." John‟s new business venture was founded as a result of the research he did with small businesses in the local area. “I was staggered to learn that most companies don‟t have a website and of those that do, the majority are unhappy with the service or experience ongoing problems with their site.” Research also revealed that on the whole small businesses simply don‟t know how to source an effective website. The world of technology and the ever-changing internet can be frightening prospect for small business owners when looking to have a web presence. John works with a team of expert web designers and developers. “Our websites are easy to use, mobile-friendly and enable small businesses to have a professionally designed website at an affordable price." “I hope to be able to use my previous business experience to help local businesses overcome their challenges or fears about websites and I promise only to speak a language they understand. . . after all, that‟s why the business is called „it‟seeze‟ pronounced as “it‟s easy”.

3rd Year Anniversary Ladies that Do is a women only networking group set up in October 2012 by Lesley Bee who owns Lesley Bee Photography. Since the initial meeting the group has become very well known in the Hinckley area and membership has grown to 34 ladies and there is currently a waiting list. The group has now just celebrated its third birthday. The group was set up as there were no lunch time business meetings for ladies running local businesses who had children and therefore breakfast networking business meetings were not an option, as these conflict with the school run. The initial meeting was held in October 2012 with 15 women and it immediately became apparent that Lesley had had a great idea and it is a terrific way for local business women to get to know each other. Several women already knew each other but there were others who did not and everyone was very interested to hear about each otherâ€&#x;s businesses. Ladies that Do is a professional, friendly business group, offering exclusivity and meeting monthly, which does not pressure members to provide referrals. However since the inaugural meeting, business has developed naturally within the group as have many friendships. This means that any business leads provided tend to be of a higher quality and usually leads to business being generated.

Inspire2Achieve Training & Consultancy Ltd Enabling people 2 reach their potential www.inspire2achieve.net

Several of the members business logos are bordering this article. The meetings are held monthly at Hinckley Golf Club. As a group it was decided that at the end of each year, as we are a not for profit group, we donate some of our surplus funds to a nominated local charity and to date we have raised considerable funds for several local charities. If you are in interested in joining this successful Ladies that Do group and meet with a vibrant, dynamic group of local business women please contact either Lesley at Lesley.bee@btconnect.com, Debbie Heron of Roundabout Hinckley and Roundabout the Villages Magazines at Debbie@roundabouthinckley.co.uk or Lucy Hooper of Lulaberry Business Support at lucy@lulaberry.co.uk.

Your Local Police Update I want to start by raising Halloween and Bonfire night. These were both exceptionally busy evenings for us, especially Halloween which can be traumatic for many who call us for support and action. It is a real test of the concept of looking to all communities to have a balance of respect and tolerance, as the nature and extent of the ASB is much higher than normal. Due to the increase in demand, the majority of your local officers worked a late shift, and in one area I authorised a dispersal order so that those committing ASB could be removed from the area and prevented from returning for a suitable period. During this evening your local officers worked incredibly hard to minimise disorder. I recently discussed some crime figures and trends with colleagues within the Community Safety Partnership. This is historically how success in policing has been defined, but we recognise that long-term policing is about getting upstream and „Problem Solving‟. As well as targeted patrols to disrupt offenders and collect intelligence on them, your local officers are normally tasked with engaging with a variety of people and communities to identify „Local Priorities‟. Then, via a range of mechanisms with partners, we combine information, intelligence and tactics and tackle the early causes of crime and disorder. So, if there‟s an opportunity for you to contribute to that process, please take it! Some of the times and places where you can access your local team are on our website: https://leics.police.uk/local-policing Christmas is approaching fast, and with it sadly comes the risk of Burglaries. There are far, far fewer than there used to be, but there is normally a „seasonal rise‟ now. Consequently I‟d like to issue some simple crime prevention advice so that you can help us help you. We will target offenders as ever, and you can take some simple steps to reduce the risk of you becoming a victim. These include:

   

Having solid locks on doors and making sure they are used/locked when you‟re out or gone to bed. A mortice lock costs about £20 and is a simple and effective measure that only takes around an hour to fit. Use a timer-switch when you‟re out or away so that a light comes on to make it look like there is someone at home Shut ground floor windows when you go to bed, and do not leave ladders or gardens chairs available so that they can be stacked for someone to be able to reach the upstairs windows. Ask your neighbours to be vigilant and if they spot anything suspicious around your property, get them to call us on 999 and remember to do the same for them.

I would also like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Inspector Dan Eveleigh, Hinckley and Blaby Neighbourhood Policing Commander

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Advertorial Martin & Co (Hinckley)

From October 2015 there has been quite a few changes to legislation regarding the private rental sector. Below is a short summary and for further details please call Steve or Lee at Martin & Co on 01455 636349. EPC regulations From April 2016 Landlords of residential properties will not be able to unreasonably refuse requests from their tenants for consent to energy efficient improvements, where financial support is available, such as the Green Deal and/or the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). Following this, from April 2018 private rented properties must be brought up to a minimum energy efficiency rating of “E”. All new tenancies must meet this standard. This provision will make it unlawful to rent out a house or business premise that does not reach this minimum standard. From April 2020 no property can continue to be let that has an energy efficiency rating greater than an “E”. Smoke Alarms On October 1st 2015 a new law commenced requiring Landlords to supply smoke alarms for every floor of the rental property. These must be tested at the start of every new tenancy. Wood Burning Stove Wood burning stoves need to be installed by a qualified HETAS engineer or should be subject to building regulation approval. If the Landlord has installed it himself and there is not certification in place, then they should be checked before Tenants move in. Legionella Bacteria and Risk Assessment Full details may be found at www.hse.gov.uk/legionnaires Deregulation Act 2015 S35 removes the requirement that a S21 notice must expire on the last day of the tenancy. S36 notice cannot be given during the first four months of a tenancy. It also gives the S21 notice a shelf life of six months. S40 Landlords cannot serve notice if a maintenance issue has been reported to the council and an enforcement notice issued. A S21 cannot be re-issued for six months after an enforcement notice repair.

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Advertorial Handy Plumbing advice from Roy of Roy Lee Plumbing and Heating Ltd Magnetic Filters

When fitting a new boiler on an existing heating system or even installing a complete new heating system, a Magnetic Filter should always be fitted as near to the boiler on the return pipe work as possible. The reason for this is that even after power flushing an existing heating system, there are always small particles of magnetite left, usually in the radiators which if just left to circulate around the heating system without any filter to catch these small particles will eventually enter the boiler‟s heat exchanger. This can cause a restriction in the heat exchanger which will lead to a complete failure of the boiler and a very expensive heat exchanger replacement. I liken this to a boiler‟s version of a heart attack as piping gets clogged up with debris and will eventually just stop! To find out more about this and any queries please contact Roy of Roy Lee Plumbing & Heating Limited.

A ROUNDABOUT

HINCKLEY Charity Article

Cats In Need (Hinckley and Nuneaton) Registered Charity No. 1042283

Fred

Cats In Need is a small locally based charity run entirely by local volunteers who foster the cats in their own homes. They do not have access to a sanctuary.

Ginger

Fred and Ginger who were featured in our last issue have now found their new forever home. However we still have many other cats and kittens waiting to be re-homed. To see some of the cats currently looking for homes please take a look at www.catchat.org under Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Some of our cats requiring loving homes: Squint has been with us for ten months and we are looking for an outdoor site for her such as a stables, smallholding or similar. She is a friendly affectionate girl but prefers the outdoor life to being inside. She would need a sheltered site with regular food and would pay for her keep as an effective pest control expert. Squint Hendricks is an adorable lad who likes to roll around in Hendricks your arms and reach out to pull your face down for a kissy lick. He has no tail as a result of an unfortunate incident with a door in his younger days but otherwise is fine. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and looking for a new home where he can enjoy being the only pet.

Skyla is the only girl from a unwanted litter of kittens. She is a big fan of a warm snuggly spot to sleep and she is always the first to know if the under floor heating has come on or the fire has been lit She is fully vaccinated and ready to find a new roost to rule where ideally she would be joined by one of her brothers.

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Charity Article Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) Give your Air Ambulance the gift of music this Christmas

While youâ€&#x;re tucking into your turkey this Christmas Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance will be working as usual, helping to save lives even during the festive season. The air ambulance crew works 365 days a year to provide lifesaving support even when everyone else is enjoying a day off. Last year DLRAA went to 73 missions in December alone, with several on Christmas Day itself. Winter is a busy season due to the icy roads and poor weather, and the holiday period is even busier as everyone travels home. This year the charity is asking for supporters to contact us with their suggestions for a Christmas song for the crew, so they have something festive to listen to between missions. The best songs suggested will be added to a special online DLRAA playlist so the crew and all our supporters can listen over Christmas. To suggest a song for the playlist, send us a message on Twitter @WNDLRAirAmb, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/WNDLRAirAmb, or please email us at enquiries@theairambulanceservice.org.uk with the subject line Christmas playlist. If you would like to help keep your local air ambulance in the skies above you this Christmas, you can find out more about our Christmas Appeal by visiting our website www.theairambulanceservice.org.uk/ChristmasAppeal or by calling us on 08454 130999. A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Community Page Youth Champion and Fairtrade Forum Member

Welcome to my latest column for Roundabout Hinckley! Recently it was „International Coffee Day,‟ a day which as I‟m sure you gather from its title, exists to promote and celebrate coffee as a beverage. Who doesn't love a good cuppa, right? I certainly do. But I love it even more when it‟s Fairtrade coffee! So, as a local Fairtrade campaigner, it was a great chance for me to promote Fairtrade coffee, which I did at the studios of Hinckley‟s own Castle Mead Radio. By buying Fairtrade coffee (which has the official Fairtrade label on it) we ensure that the original farmer/grower in the Developing World gets paid a fairer, more decent wage and gets to live and work in better conditions. So, not only do you get to enjoy a delicious cuppa, but you also get that warm glow of knowing you‟ve done a good thing and helped someone to help themselves. What could be better than that? There are, of course, lots of other Fairtrade goods available too...more than 4,000 available in the UK! So, the next time you‟re out shopping, why not put one or two Fairtrade items in your basket? People you‟ll likely never meet will be very thankful that you did. Also recently, I was honoured to attend the Leicestershire Police Chief Constable‟s Annual Intercultural Evening at Leicestershire Police Headquarters. I was representing the Leicester LGBT Centre with which I‟m a Trustee and was one of more than 150 invited guests. The event included stalls on different parts of the police‟s work, including the Youth Commission, as well as on behalf of different faith group representatives in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Chief Constable Simon Cole told leics.police.uk: “The Intercultural Evening is very important to us. It allows us to reach out to lots of different groups and individuals from all across (the city and two counties) to talk about what we are doing. There was a real buzz in the room and it was a great opportunity to engage with people from our local communities.” It was a great occasion and thanks to all those involved in organising it. Finally, the aforementioned Castle Mead Radio is celebrating twenty-five years on the air! The station is staffed totally by volunteers and now, as well as continuing to broadcast to Hinckley and Bosworth Community Hospital on Ashby Road and Hinckley and District Hospital on Mount Road, our programming can also be heard around the World online via our website. Here‟s a link to my page on the site: http://www.castlemeadradio.co.uk/presenters/matthewhulbert/ You can listen to my review of the week‟s papers every Thursday, live from 1-2pm and repeated 6-7pm. Many congratulations to Station Manager Paul Gardner and all of my friends and colleagues at Castle Mead Radio for a quarter of a century of great service to the local community!

CHARITY APPEALS FOR VOLUNTEERS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF LONELY OLDER PEOPLE IN HINCKLEY Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is urgently appealing for volunteers living in Hinckley to spare just a few hours a month to help run its local tea parties - and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves! The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities – providing a regular and vital friendship link every month. Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host‟s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. Contact the Elderly runs a popular group in Hinckley but in order to ensure that it continues to thrive, the charity is making an appeal for more coordinators who would be able to help organise the tea parties and liaise with the older guests and volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly every month. Furthermore, the coordinator must be able to drive one or two older guests to the tea parties one Sunday a month, or host an afternoon tea party once or twice a year. Contact the Elderly‟s Midlands and North West Development Officer, Prabina Lord said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but our attempts to continue to provide this lifeline for older people in Hinckley have hit a bit of a stumbling block due to a real shortage of local volunteers to help run the group. Being a driver requires a commitment of just a couple of hours once a month, a host just a few hours once or twice a year, and the coordinator role only involves a little extra regular commitment each month in addition to the tea party outings which everyone really enjoys! So I‟m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.”

Hinckley residents interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly can contact Prabina Lord, Midlands and North West on 0161 460 2950 or email prabina.lord@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

Advert on Page 4 I recently needed an eye check. Having seen Optical People had recently opened in Sapcote I made an appointment. They are in a good location with free onsite parking and a great kids gaming area. From booking the appointment, to the eye test and then choosing my new glasses from the hundreds of frames to choose from, the process was a real pleasure. I was made to feel really welcome and I am delighted with my lovely new glasses and better vision. I can highly recommend Ravi and his team at Optical People. Debbie Heron. Advert on Pages 24 & 25 Just wanted to let you know we went in to Buttercream Tearoom yesterday and had our wonderful afternoon tea. The food was gorgeous and really generous. Cathy is a great baker and Lee a fab host. We took our 13 month old along and they were great with her. Thanks so much again to Martin & Co for providing the prize, we were so full we didn't have dinner that night. Lynda Gilmour. Roundabout the Villages Wordsearch Winner August September 2015
