Which double glazing company offers first class customer service? Which double glazing company offers great value for money? Which double glazing company can fit A+12 energy rated windows? Which double glazing company guarantees quality? ‘If you’re not happy, you don’t pay’ Which double glazing company is a Which? trusted trader? The answer to all the questions above is Progress Windows in Hinckley. Progress are the first company in Hinckley to be awarded the coveted Which? trusted trader accolade and the company can now proudly associate the Which? logo with their company. Progress continue to grow their reputation as the best double glazing, fascia and conservatory installers in the area and being awarded the Which? award goes some way in affirming that reputation. The team at Progress have worked very hard to achieve the accreditation. The vetting process is very thorough as you would expect from the leading consumer advice organisation in the country. Progress Windows Managing Director Paul Hines is clearly delighted with the way business is going in his company. “It’s a great achievement for us to win the Which? accreditation. It’s a great statement from Progress that we are committed to the best customer service that we can offer and fitting the highest quality product available within our industry. It’s brilliant to have a team at Progress who are dedicated to doing the best we can for our clients and because of this the Which? award was a natural step for the business. We felt confident we would achieve our goal of winning the award”. Progress Windows have advertised in the Roundabout Hinckley Magazine continually for over 5 years now. At Roundabout Hinckley we pride ourselves on only advertising the best businesses from the local area. We would like to congratulate Progress on their recent success and we are looking forward to advertising this wonderful company long into the future. If you are thinking of improving your home then there really is no reason not to give Progress Windows a try. Please see their advert below.

Handy Plumbing advice from Roy of Roy Lee Plumbing and Heating Ltd Gas Appliance Unsafe Situations

7

There are three main classifications for gas appliance unsafe situations. 

Is not to current standards : This is where usually a boiler has been sited for a few years but the flue outlet is too close to an opening door or window but is working satisfactorily and so does not pose a threat to human life. This is a general example as there are other NCS situations that are also relevant

At Risk : This is where a gas appliance has been badly installed and is a potential threat to human life. Again there are other At Risk situations to consider as this is just one example.

Immediately Dangerous : This is where the gas appliance is a definite threat to human life, and must be disconnected from the gas supply as there is chance of fatalities if it remains operational. These are caused by lack of servicing, badly installed appliances, some times the lack of knowledge by the gas installer themselves. There are other examples of Immediately Dangerous but this is just a small example.

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Charity Article

Leicester Animal Aid helping dogs and cats down on their luck Please help Leicester Animal Aid this Christmas Even though it doesn’t seem five minutes since Christmas 2013, sure enough the festive season is soon to be upon us again. Winter time is always a struggle at the rescue centre with extra heating expenses, the washing machine on the go all the time to keep the animals in clean bedding and towels to wipe those muddy paws after their walks and playtimes. There are lots of ways you can help us make the winter months more manageable and to make Christmas in the Kennels or Cattery more special for its residents. Here’s a few ways to help: AlterNativity is an annual event held on Saturday 8th November from 10am until 2pm at the United Reformed Church in Hinckley (LE10 1NL), with the aim of promoting a different view of Christmas giving. It ‘Aids’ those in need or difficulty at Christmas by offering 'living gifts' for you to give your family and friends as an alternative Christmas gift to help the poor, hungry, sick and homeless. LAA are one of the featured charities this year and you can help LAA by buying a gift of ‘a warm bed, good food, care and affection for a dog or cat for one day’ for a donation of £10. More information about the event is available at www.hinckley-alternativity.org.uk Christmas Bazaar is a giant sale of donated goods held on 22nd November from 11am – 3pm at Blaby Village Hall (LE8 4GQ). It is the perfect place to get your decorations, presents or a treat for yourself at a bargain price. Use our Amazon Wishlist to buy a present for a cat or dog to open on Christmas Day! Go to Amazon and type Leicester Animal Aid Wishlist into the search bar. Click on the wishlist and choose which items to order and they will be delivered direct to our door! It couldn’t be more simple to cheer up a homeless dog or cat who is in rescue over Christmas. And after Christmas, if you got some dodgy presents you don’t like, or you have had a big clear out to make room for new clothes you have bought in the sales you can donate your unwanted stuff to our Charity Shop! Drop your items off at the Centre between 10am and 2.30pm (we are open every day except Christmas Day). Merry Christmas from us all at Leicester Animal Aid!

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Community Page Your Local Police Neighbourhood Watch

We are currently in the middle of a busy couple of weeks here at Hinckley. The force launched the fourth phase of Operation Tiger activity on Monday 15th September and local officers have been carrying out extra patrols to target crime and antisocial behaviour across the borough. We’ve been tackling crime and ASB in other ways too. By working closely with local second hand shops to help them spot stolen property, we are cutting off a potential disposal route to criminals. And by seizing vehicles which are used antisocially or without insurance, we are reducing the misery caused by irresponsible motoring. On 6th October, I will be moving on to pastures new and handing over the reins to Inspector Mike Cawley. Mike has got lots of experience, most recently as an Operational Command Inspector, looking after critical incidents across the whole county. He has also previously held a senior position at Blaby LPU, our nearest neighbour with whom we already work closely. Mike is looking forward to taking over the team of dedicated officers here at Hinckley, and you can look forward to his updates over the coming months. One final parting plea – Although the number of houses and flats being burgled keeps coming down, these offences still happen far too often. And in so many cases, the burglars simply walk or climb in through unlocked doors and windows. Please keep your homes secure, particularly as the darker nights roll in as the clocks go back. By taking a few extra precautions, you can massively reduce the chances of a break in at your home.

Please follow us on twitter for regular updates on local policing @HinckleyLPU

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Advertorial

Martin & Co (Hinckley) As we enter the Autumn and Winter period, it seems an age away since sunny August and our holidays. The Hinckley property market was subdued during August and asking prices dropped by 3%, mainly because everyone seemed to be away and enjoying themselves! However once the children were back at school and the everyday routine returned, the property market picked up! Sellers were calling us and booking in for valuations and by the end of September there were plenty of new properties on the market. Rental demand continues to be high and this is despite the first time buyers leaving the private sector in droves. However the rental stock continues to be low and this always seems to be a problem. This could be for many reasons such as tenants staying longer, or the increase in competition between us local agents. However, the encouraging sign is that investors are back and purchasing more properties to bolster their portfolios and new developments are in abundance locally. It’s all good news. Steve Chadwick, Director, Martin & Co (Hinckley)

Super Slimmer Michelle is named Woman of the Year! A Hinckley slimmer has discovered less is more after losing over 7 stones in weight and winning the title of Woman of the Year 2014. Michelle Richardson lost weight with her local Slimming World group held at St John’s Church in Hinckley. The 45 year old follows Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmer’s to fill up on satisfying yet healthy everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, lean meat and fish, pasta, potatoes, rice, pulses without having to weigh or measure. Michelle says “My family and friends are all amazed how much I can eat and still lose weight. I cook for them now and they can’t believe it’s all healthy food because it tastes so good. I still eat all the same meals that I did before but now I cook and prepare them differently” “I never dreamt I could achieve so much. I’ve gone from a size 30 to a 14 and it’s made a huge difference, it’s changed my life! Alison, who runs the St John’s group, says “I’m so proud of Michelle. Not only does she look fabulous, she’s improved her health and is bursting with energy. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women in Hinckley to change their lives in the same way. It can be hard to admit that you need to do something with your weight and to ask for help. But I think Michelle shows just what’s possible when you do. St John’s Church Slimming World group is held every Monday at 9.30am at the church on Coventry road. To join or find out more call Alison on 07900 227447

Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) exists to provide a rapid Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) to people when they need us most. DLRAA receives no Government or funding. Each rescue mission costs an average of £1,700, so it is important for the Charity to get as much support as possible and raise vital funds for their service. DLRAA routinely carries senior Doctors and Consultants on board to can provide advanced treatments such as anaesthesia, in essence taking the hospital to the patient.

From road traffic collisions to serious sporting incidents and medical emergencies, DLRAA helps people in the community at their greatest time of need. The most common type of incident that DLRAA attends is road traffic collisions, but they also attend horse riding accidents, falls, sporting injuries and medical emergencies such as heart attacks and strokes. DLRAA's state-of-the-art Agusta helicopter has a top speed of 185mph and is one of the fastest civilian helicopters available. DLRAA works alongside sister HEMS Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance on collaborative operations at major trauma scenes as well as supporting each other by staggering their shifts during the summer months. Between them they carry out approximately 1,800 rescues a year. DLRAA is part of the umbrella organisation The Air Ambulance Service, which also consists of Warwickskhire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, and The Children’s Air Ambulance. In January this year Ross Cunningham was rescued by the service after breaking his neck during a rugby match. He has taken part in the DLRAA’s first Bottle Bank Week fundraising with his company, ATA Group, to help say thank you to the service that came to his rescue. Schools and local businesses across Derbyshire were asked to fill bottles up with cash to help them raise vital funds and help fill their lifesaving helicopter with fuel. Ross said: “Having had first-hand experience of the service, I wanted to do my bit to help by getting the office involved, we’re already thinking up fundraising ideas. You can’t predict when you might need the help of your local air ambulance. It’s there to help all of us. The speed and care I received was phenomenal, and were it not for public donations, who knows what might have happened to me.” Raising £100 could help DLRAA fill up with enough fuel to fly 109 miles, which could get them from the airbase at East Midlands Airport to North London. The Charity needs your support to help raise as much money as possible from their many fundraising campaigns.

A ROUNDABOUT

HINCKLEY Charity Article

Cats In Need (Hinckley and Nuneaton) Registered Charity No. 1042283

Cats In Need is a small locally based charity run entirely by local volunteers who foster the cats in their own homes. They do not have access to a sanctuary.

Guiness

Tizzy, Dougal, Pickle, Shoebridge, Guinness, Eric and Splash have now found their new forever loving home! However we still have many other cats looking for new homes including a number of kittens waiting to be rehomed. To see some of the cats currently looking for homes please take a look at www.catchat.org under Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Tizzy

Some of our cats requiring loving homes:  Betty is a sweet little ex stray who is looking for a new home. She is an affectionate little girl with a little squeaky miaow to say hello. Betty has been neutered and is very clean. She loves a stroll around the garden and if a pair of legs is there to rub around then that is a bonus.  Jeff was born in a logshed to his stray mum and arrived with us with his sister. They were a little scruffy and shy but after some TLC Jeff is a playful little lad who is fully vaccinated and looking for his new home, maybe with a fire to curl up in front of instead of sleeping on the wood !

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Community Page 37 Children and Young People’s Champion and Fairtrade Champion As ever this has been a very busy, productive couple of months for me in my dual roles, as the Borough's Children and Young People's Champion and Fairtrade Champion. Recently the second Hinckley and Bosworth Snapdragon Children and Families Festival was held, with thousands of people enjoying the host of activities put on as part of the week-long event. It included twenty-five young people from across the area being involved in a musical showcase at Hollycroft Park in Hinckley. Young people from Dorothy Goodman School, John Cleveland College, Redmoor High School and Primary schools across the Borough also took part. Earlier in the week the annual National Play Day event was held at Argents Mead in the town. On that day, and forming part of the commemorations marking 100 years since the start of the First World War, children, young people and their families were able to write down their hopes and dreams for the future and attach their notes to the Hope Tree. On my note I wrote, 'My hope is...that all children can be safe and loved!' The notes have now been collected and will be compiled into an on-line booklet, that will also be held in the Borough Council's archive. I congratulate Rebecca Ball, the Borough Council's Children and Young People's Strategic Co-ordinator, her team and the volunteers who helped during the week for all of their hard work. Recently, as part of the Summer Activities scheme at The George Ward Centre in Barwell (where I'm a staff member) I took part in one of their weekly information point events, where a different local agency/group sets up a stall and is available to talk to local people about their work. I was there representing the Hinckley and Bosworth Fairtrade Forum, a group of volunteers who work throughout the year to promote Fairtrade in the Borough. It's always fantastic to be able to talk about the importance of buying Fairtrade products where possible as, by doing so, we help to ensure a fairer wage and better working conditions for Developing World farmers and produce who toil hard to ensure we get many of the items we find on our shop shelves. Thanks to Centre Manager Lesley Pratt for facilitating the opportunity. If you would like to invite me to attend your event or to give a talk about Fairtrade, please e-mail me via: mathew@barwell.eu or tweet me at @HulbertMathew. See you soon! * Councillor Mathew Hulbert is HBBC's Children and Young People's Champion and Fairtrade Champion.

Local Christmas Lights Switch On Hinckley Friday 21st November, 2014 Earl Shilton Friday 28th November, 2014

Charity Link needs your support. Whilst Leicestershire is one of the richest counties in the UK, you may be surprised to learn that it also has one of the highest rates of poverty in the country. Each year Charity Link helps over 5,500 children and adults throughout the region who are experiencing poverty, hardship or crisis by providing items that the majority of us take for granted, such as a bed to sleep in, a cooker, and in emergencies, food. There are many ways to show your support for this local charity. It is hosting a ‘Moulin Rouge’ themed evening on Thursday 6th November at Bistro Live in Leicester city centre (tickets £25), you can donate food or volunteer to help out in the food bank, buy the charity’s Christmas cards, or organise your own fundraising activity. The charity’s small and friendly team would be delighted to hear from you. Due to the unique way in which Charity Link works, for every £10 donated it can raise £50 from charitable trusts that are available to help those in need – meaning your support makes even more of a difference to the people who really need it. To find out more about the charity and how you can get involved please visit www.charity-link.org or contact Rachel Markham by calling 0116 222 2218 or emailing rachel.markham@charity-link.org .

Aquaguard Midlands Roofing Ltd, Advert on Page 20 "I was given Alistair McNeil’s contact details by Roundabout Hinckley after a previous contractor had let me down. I am visually impaired and finding reliable workmen for contract work is not easy, so when one lets me down, I feel particularly vulnerable to cowboys and fly-by-nights. So, I was very pleased when Alistair responded to my call promptly. We arranged a date for a visit and he arrived spot on time! He quickly appraised the job required and gave a very fair price and agreed a date for the work. Alistair and his colleague arrived dead on time again to do the work. He was quick, efficient and did a great job (guaranteed for years). He is a friendly guy who does a great job and doesn't rip you off. He does need topping up with tea on a regular basis, milk and two sugars if you’re brewing! I can’t recommend him highly enough!" Steve P. Nuneaton
