Community Page Hinckley Stock Car Driver Ready To Go Hinckley based Formula One stock car driver Paul Hines, Managing Director of Progress Windows and Conservatories, is all set for another season which started on Saturday 2nd April at Coventry Speedway. The former British and European Champion has had a busy winter preparing two formula stock cars for the demanding season ahead. BriSCA Formula one stock car racing takes place throughout the UK culminating at the World Championships due to take place at Coventry in September. Taking place on an oval track the cars are built for contact racing where it is encouraged to move the opposition aside to gain positions through a race. Paul has been racing for over ten years now and knows what to expect this season. “There will be some hard and close racing this year and I can’t wait for it. The team and I have worked really hard over the close season to really be ready to try and win the big titles in the sport”. Paul has won all the titles on offer in the sport except one, the World Title and that will be the main aim in 2016. “This year’s World Final will take place at Coventry International Motor Speedway in September and I’d love to win it there. Not least because the track is due to close at the end of the season after over 60 years of racing there” said Hines. “It will be sad when it’s gone as it’s been a big part of a lot of local people’s lives throughout the years. A lot of Hinckley residents have spent their time at the stock cars or speedway at some point since the early sixties. Each event there this year will be special but that world final race will really be a unique occasion”. Paul and the team have made a number of changes to the cars after a disappointing campaign in 2015. Paul crashed out of the World Final after qualifying well and will not want to repeat that in 2016. Hines said “We have made one of the cars slightly wider and longer to try and improve handling. We are still using 650bhp chevy engines so hopefully we will be right up there”. Paul would like to thank his sponsors who include a number of local businesses and also his team who are made up of motorsport enthusiasts from Hinckley and Burbage.

View from the stand (well armchair really!)

The Premier League is entering the final straight and City continue to defy the odds remaining top of the table. Heading into April with a 16 point gap to fifth place, Champions League football seems almost certain for next season. Who would have predicted that! The form of title rivals Arsenal and Man City has stuttered recently leading many pundits to declare it a two horse race for the title between City and Spurs. This may be a bit premature however as both are capable of putting a run together. I am sure Claudio Ranieri won’t be writing either of them off just yet. Spurs also show no sign of falling away so City need to keep going. The manager continues to do a great job of playing down the situation and deflecting the inevitable pressure that the players must be starting to feel. The style of football has changed from the free flowing counter attacking we saw earlier in the season. This was inevitable as teams finally realised City are actually quite good and have adjusted their tactics to counter our style. Teams are now much more defensive minded against us meaning City have to be more patient and wait for chances to come. It’s great that they have been able to adapt and keep on winning. Four 1-0 wins in five games shows a team capable of grinding out results when the going gets tough, not dissimilar to how Chelsea played towards the end of last season. Let’s just hope they can keep it going for a bit longer. It is going to be a nerve jangling ride from now until the end of the season. Whatever happens it’s been an incredible season that no-one could have predicted. For long standing City fans, it is taking a bit of getting used to. There has never been so much media coverage with numerous features on TV, Radio 5 Live broadcasting live from Leicester Market and producing a 90 minutes special about the season and numerous articles in the press. One notable result of this season’s achievements are this summer’s pre-season friendlies that have recently been announced. Can there be any more evidence of how the landscape is changing than Leicester being lined up to play Paris St Germain in Los Angeles and Barcelona in Stockholm? It makes Celtic in Glasgow seem quite mundane! Whether this turns out to be a one off or the start of a new era in Leicester’s history it is certainly going to be fun finding out. Leicester Tigers season continues to be consistently inconsistent. A run of three straight home wins including two against the two teams at the top of the table, Saracens and Exeter, have been mixed in with 4 straight away losses. A top four finish and qualification for the end of season play offs is looking under threat. It looks likely that Tigers will be fighting for fourth spot with local rivals Northampton Saints and it seems increasingly likely that the outcome will be decided when the two teams play each other in Northampton in mid April. That should be a cracker. Leicestershire have been warming up (literally) for the new season with a pre-season tour in Dubai. The season proper gets under way with an away trip to Glamorgan followed by the first home game at Grace Road against Kent which starts on Sunday April 24th. Great news is that admission on the first day will be absolutely free as the club host an open day from 10:00 am. There will be a number of fun events as well as the cricket with children being entertained by a treasure hunt, bouncy castle and face painting between 12 noon and 3pm. The club will also be showing the Premier League fixture between Leicester City and Swansea City on televisions around the ground at 4.15pm. Let’s hope the weather has warmed up a bit by then, it would be good to see the ground full for the start of the season.

Community Page Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA)

Stay safe this spring Spring has finally sprung, leaving behind the cold, frosty days and dangerous driving conditions of winter. But did you know that this time of year is even more dangerous for a particular type of accident? While you might think that most sports accidents and emergencies happen in the summer, spring actually tops the list. Last year, from March to May, Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance went to 71 sports incidents. That’s compared to just 58 from June to August. So as the season changes and you start getting back into your hobbies and sports, make sure you stay safe. If you cycle, make sure to wear your helmet and get lights on your bike. If you ride horses, make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing and reflective gear. And always carry an ICE card, or keep an ICE contact in your phone. ICE stands for ‘in case of emergency’, and is a vital way to let emergency crews know who you are and who to contact in case you can’t tell them yourself. ICE cards should have your name, your emergency contact’s name, and a phone number for them. Strap them in a visible place, like on your arm or helmet, so emergency crews can see them as soon as possible. Alternatively, keep an ICE contact programmed into your phone under ‘ICE’, or have it as your phone’s background if you have a lock on your phone. Your local air ambulance flies approximately 1,000 vital missions every year. Each costs around £1,700, and the charity is entirely funded by the generosity of the public. They receive no government funding. To donate to the service or find out more, visit theairambulanceservice.org.uk or call 08454 130999* *Calls cost 3ppm.

Advertorial LWS Training Services What is an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)?

An Automatic External Defibrillator or AED is a box of electronics that analyses and re-organises the rhythms of the heart should an individual have a cardiac arrest. Chances of survival without one? Without the use of one of these pieces of equipment the person who has had a cardiac arrest has a slim chance of survival. The window of opportunity is quite short and best results are achieved if it is used within the first 10 minutes of an incident occurring. After 10 minutes the chances of recovery go down by 10% for every minute delayed, so do you know where you‟re nearest AED or more common name of Public Access Defibrillator (PADS) is located? Do you know there is a map showing where AED‟s/PAD‟s are located as well as an app for mobiles? Your community, village, town or city can register your AED/PAD online, register it with the local ambulance service or your local health centre/doctor. What about training? Not required the unit tells you what to do. Technically true but with a little knowledge and understanding of basic life support you could do so much more. Each unit is different and has unique features, for example, can it be used with children as well as adults? What about maintenance? Does not need it. Again technically true as they all self-test and have indicators showing they are ok to use. However, all units have consumables that expire and need checking on a regular basis. It is advisable to read the manufacturers literature as most units require simple maintenance every now and then, some even have a service indicator on them to tell you to contact the manufacturer. Volunteers can be asked to become “guardians” to help look after and maintain these units, who cares for your unit? What about the First Aid kit?

Community Page Your Local Police Update Staff updates I‟m very pleased and proud to state that PCSO Andy Harrison was a finalist in the PCSO of the Year competition and two other local officers, Nathan Bastock and Jack Walters were also nominated – it‟s quite an achievement to have three nominations from one Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA) which, in my opinion, reflects the high calibre of staff we have. A new group of PCSOs is being recruited to tackle high harm cases (such as child sexual exploitation) and the force is currently looking at something called the Cambridge Harm Index which prioritises resources where the most harm is caused not necessarily where the highest number of crimes are recorded i.e. shoplifting. The Neighbourhood Priority Team (NPT) has had some notable success lately arresting a burglar and securing a custodial sentence. The Dedicated Neighbourhood Teams (DNTs) continue to flex and innovate and our use of new legislation to close premises which generate lots of complaints about antisocial behaviour is leading the way in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Policing style We continue to strive to be accessible and, through our engagement and consultation, local officers create a database of local needs and concerns on a tailor-made system. This leads to the creation of a „Problem Solving Plan‟ (PSPs) which is linked with reported crimes and intelligence, which are held in our systems, so that we can ensure we are tackling real issues. We work very closely with both Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and Blaby District Council to share intelligence and pool tactics for tackling antisocial behaviour and other complex issues together. Our role is to try and reduce demand and create changes in offenders, victims and locations so that there are fewer incidents to attend and fewer crimes to investigate. If you have anything you‟d like to report to us, or any information that you think would be useful to us, please continue to use 101 for non-urgent matters or dial 999 in an emergency or if you see a crime in progress.

Policing Priorities A recent increase in burglaries in the north of the area has been tackled through an operation called „Op Wellness‟. As a result, we‟ve seen a reduction in the number of offences in one month from 90 to 57 which is good news although we are not complacent and continue to prioritise and tackle this problem. Another operation, Op Violin, is focussed on drugs, vulnerability and antisocial behaviour from residential addresses in Hinckley. We are working with our partners to secure Closure Notices and Orders; change the lifestyle and dependencies of offenders; reassure local residents and support local communities by helping them to improve the security of their homes. You can find all our problem solving plans on our website www.leics.police.uk along with other local information.

Inspector Dan Eveleigh, Hinckley and Blaby Neighbourhood Policing Commander

Advertorial

"The UK housing market is one of the most valuable in the

world, and we foresee the private rented sector continuing to grow over the next 30 years and surpassing 30% of households renting from a private landlord." Steve Chadwick, Martin & Co Martin & Co UK celebrates 30 years in the UK lettings industry this year. To mark our progression over the years we have produced a celebratory, special edition market intelligence report analysing the private rental sector and its evolution since the first Martin & Co office opened in 1986, when just 10% of all UK property was being rented privately. Today that number has virtually doubled, with 19% of households privately renting, a total of around 4.3m properties. Thus, landlords and the buy-to-let sector now occupy a fifth of the UK market. "The population will divide into those who own multiple properties and those who rent." The number of mature adults renting today has also skyrocketed 346% since the 80s, and house prices have grown a staggering 768% in the same time frame, at double the rate of FTSE shares (342%). The national average rent today stands at just over ÂŁ750pcm and is growing at 3pc a year. Nevertheless, media coverage and government intervention ignore these facts and signal the end of buy-to-let. However, the figures stack up in favour of all serious landlords, and the last 30 years paint an interesting picture for further growth in the future. Migration, rising property prices and a much higher student population mean that more households will choose to forego owning a house in favour of the stability of renting, an estimated 100,000-200,000 households a year for at least the next five years. "There is nothing the government can do to stop this growth unless it acts to control rents and grant tenants security of tenure." Since 1986 we have navigated complex and temperamental property markets to get to where we are today, as one of the largest and most specialised estate agency businesses in the UK. Our network consists of nearly 200 offices stretching from Falmouth to Inverness and we have focused our model on residential lettings, so we are well-placed to answer any questions you have about investing in a buy-to-let property. We have the expertise to help you find, buy and manage an investment property, with all the support you need from your local Martin & Co Hinckley team. Please contact the Hinckley office today to find out more and ask for a free Martin & Co special edition Market Intelligence Report. If you wish to discuss selling or renting your home please call Martin & Co on 01455 636349 to arrange a free market appraisal. Community Page Concordia Youth Theatre “DON’T STOP BELIEVIN!” Aptly these have been the words constantly spoken by the Concordia Youth Theatre committee for the last few months. As a youth theatre we are lucky in the fact that most new musicals tend to be released for amateur performance for either schools or younger performers before they are available for adult societies. We looked at Lloyd Webber musicals like Evita and Cats, recent West End musicals like Urinetown, 9 to 5 and Loserville but when we saw Rock of Ages was available for amateur performance we instantly knew the search was over. Rock of Ages tells the story of Drew Boley (stage name WOLFGANG VON COLT) a wannabe rock star who cleans the toilets at the Bourbon Rooms and Sherrie Christian a part time waitress and stripper who has just arrived from the small town of Paola, Kansas and dreams of being a movie actress and is set at a time when the famous Sunset Strip is to be demolished by a family of wealthy German developers for regeneration! With the life of The Bourbon Rooms coming to an end, bar owner Dennis Dupree persuades the famous rock star Stacee Jaxx and his band Arsenal to perform their final gig there with hilarious consequences. Lenny, Dennis’s right hand man and the shows narrator, brings the whole show together with his unusual style of narration. The show has everything from love to laughter interspersed with classic sex, drugs and rock and roll. Rock of Ages is a rock/jukebox musical, with a book by Chris D'Arienzo, built around classic rock hits from the 1980s, especially from the famous glam metal bands of the decade. The musical features some of the most iconic soft rock classics including Don’t Stop Believin, More Than Words, I Want to Know What Love Is, Keep On Loving You and everybody’s favourite - The Final Countdown. Having a 7 year run on Broadway, a 3 year run in the West End and a Hollywood film starring Tom Cruise, this is a massive show that will rock the roof of the Concordia Theatre. The show runs from 21st - 25th June 2016, ticket prices start from only £9 to £11 and will be available to buy either at the theatre box office, by calling our ticket hotline on 07784 303579 or online at www.cytonline.co.uk Please be aware that the show does contain some adult themes and language that some people may find offensive. This show wont have you dancing in the aisle - you will be ROCKIN !!!

Charity Page Cats In Need (Hinckley and Nuneaton) Registered Charity No. 1042283

Cats In Need is a small locally based charity run entirely by local volunteers who foster the cats in their own homes. They do not have access to a sanctuary. Gizmo who was featured in our last issue has now found her new forever home. However we still have other cats and kittens waiting to be re-homed. To see some of the cats currently looking for homes please take a look at www.catchat.org under Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Gizmo

Some of our cats requiring loving homes:

Tabs is a bit of a mysterious type, he was fed as a stray after turning up in someone's garden and that is really that as far as his history goes. Maybe he was a much loved pet, maybe a streetwise loner. Perhaps he got lost or someone got bored. He is certainly able to look after himself so he may have had to for a while. He is a very friendly boy and a bit of a lap cat but he won't tolerate anything he considers to be "messing about!" Tabs is untested living with other animals and would not be suitable for a home with young children.

Eddie

Tabs

Eddie who we featured in the last issue is still looking for a new home. He came in with two other cats after the death of his owner. He was in quite a state with manky ears. Unfortunately he tested positive for FiV (feline AIDS). With good food he soon turned himself around and is a lovely boy. FiV is no longer the death sentence it once was and with good care many cats reach a normal life span. Eddie is a placid boy who loves company and would need an indoor home with lots of fuss and food available. Eddie is a special boy who deserves a special home which we hope someone will give him.

Please mention Roundabout Hinckley magazine when contacting Cats in Need To enquire further about becoming a fosterer, re-homing a cat or making a donation please call 02476 384358 or 01455 631213 after 5pm only.

Community Page Tinny Hat launches new extended opening hours for the Museum season Hinckley‟s own mascot, Tinny Hat, launched Hinckley and District Museum‟s new open season on Easter Monday. The opening hours of the Museum have been extended as a way of increasing visitor numbers to the town centre venue. The Museum will now be open on Mondays in July, during the school holidays. The trademark of the Museum in its 22 open seasons, since 1996, has always been that new exhibits are produced in order to attract people again and again to the Museum and to provide hours of exploration and discovery. This year is no exception.

Centrepieces One of the centrepieces for the coming season will be the interior of a 17 th Century plague ridden room - recalling when the great disease came to Hinckley. The other big ticket attraction will be an enhanced display of the Hansom Cab, with the three quarter model Hansom Cab built by students at Redmoor, in a completely new setting, surrounded by artefacts showing how the image of the Cab has become part of the fabric of our popular culture - perhaps more than we at first realise. Exhibit curator, Greg Drozdz said: “I would bet that lots of people would be surprised just how important the Hansom Cab, which was invented in Hinckley, was. It has made its way into everything in our lives from cough linctus to Sherlock Holmes. It features regularly in films and on TV - including Dr. Who and Star Trek”. Other featured exhibits are: Roman Ways, John Cleveland - the Royalist Poet, Grave Mysteries, the Battle of Bosworth revisited, Hinckley's Tin hats, Burbage Darby and Joan Club at 100, the First and Second World Wars. Museum Volunteer of the Year in 2014, Martin Yates, has prepared a display on the weird and curious in our local churchyards. A keen photographer, Martin has been visiting local churchyards, across the district, capturing the strange and unusual, through the eye of his lens. Martin said: “You never know what is round the corner in our local churchyards, there‟s always a surprise and I hope that people will appreciate what I have been unable to unearth”.

Traditional Wash Days These popular events will be continuing this year, with the same emphasis on soap suds, washboards and dolly bombs. The days are designed to give children a hands on feel of what it was like in the days before twin tubs, automatics and tumble dryers. Those taking part will be shown and have a chance to use the old equipment that were once part and parcel of Great-Grandma‟s life. Museum Chairman, Ann Crabtree, said: “This is a great opportunity for splashing about and dipping more than just your toe in the water. These days have been popular in the past and we hope that this year it will be the same.” MUSEUM OPENING HOURS Easter Monday (28th March) to 30th October 2016 Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays 10am to 4pm Sundays 2pm to 5pm, Mondays in July 11am to 3pm Mondays in August, apart from Bank Holidays, are traditional wash days,11am to 3pm Last admissions are half an hour before closing

Charity Page Leicester Animal Aid helping dogs and cats down on their luck Can you help rehome a dog or cat from Leicester Animal Aid? Are you looking for a new addition to your (furry!) family? By rehoming from Leicester Animal Aid you are giving a dog or cat the chance of a new, happy life.

Jarvis - 18 month old terrier I‟m „Jazzy Jarvis‟, I am a friendly little boy who loves to play and quite a ladies‟ man when it comes to other dogs. Being a terrier I am very active and would certainly like a home with an active owner who is interested in the mental stimulation of interactive games and clicker training as well as agility and fly-ball. I love fuss and enjoy a comfy sofa at the end of the day where I can relax and enjoy T-Touch massages and a yummy Kong full of sardines. I could possibly live with a compatible dog but would need an adult only home without any visiting children and a loving owner who has time, bags of patience and experience of working with a dog who has separation anxiety issues. I can get quite upset when my human friends leave me but I‟m learning how to manage my anxiety. My new owners must be understanding and able to settle me into a new and regular routine following my current training methods.

Banjo - 11 year old domestic short haired cat I‟m „Bouncing Banjo‟ and can be heard having a party in my cat pod, I maybe an older gentleman but I love to play and sometimes it‟s too cold to go outside so I bring the party indoors! I am respectful of my neighbours though and it‟s not long until I‟m back in bed relaxing. I do love the sound of my own voice and enjoy my own company. I am a real fuss pot deep down and a gentle soul but I think I‟d prefer a home where I would be the man of the manor without any competition from other animals or children. Retirement is all about being pampered and waited on so I am ready to lap that up! I do need daily grooming of my beautiful coat so would certainly need a loving and dedicated new owner. If you are interested in finding out more information about Jarvis or Banjo please call 01455 888257 or come and visit us. We are open from 10am (11am for the Cattery) until 2.30pm every day.

Community Page Youth Champion and Fairtrade Forum Member Fairtrade Fortnight was fantastic here in Hinckley and Bosworth, with so many events being held across the Borough to celebrate it. From breakfasts to coffee mornings, a trail, and so much more! I am very proud to be part of the Borough's Fairtrade Forum, a group of local volunteers who work all year round every year to promote this vitally important cause, who helped to organise these occasions. I would like to thank them for all of their hard work and ongoing commitment and dedication. By buying products with the official Fairtrade label on them we ensure more of the money we pay, a fairer amount goes to the original farmer and grower in the Developing World. Also as part of the fortnight I was honoured to be able to represent the forum, down at Westminster, at the launch of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPGP) for Fairtrade. This is a cross-party group who will work together to promote Fairtrade and what it means to farmers and growers, in the corridors of power. Whilst there we heard from Patrick, a tea farmer from Kenya, who talked movingly about the difference Fairtrade has made to him, his family and his community. We must always remember the power we have as consumers to effect change for the better, by shopping ethically. If you'd like to be involved in the Fairtrade Forum, please tweet us at @LE10Fairtrade or e-mail me via: comedymat@yahoo.co.uk Mathew Hulbert is Youth Champion of The George Ward Centre and is a Member of the Hinckley and Bosworth Fairtrade Forum.

Testimonials Received Advert on Page 13 On my recent birthday I chose to have afternoon tea at Ullesthorpe Court. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon with delicious sandwiches, scones with cream and jam and a lovely selection of cakes with delicious coffee as well as glasses of bubbly. Thank you to both Simon and Paul for the fabulous service and I can highly recommend the afternoon tea to everyone! Debbie Heron - Roundabout Hinckley Advert on Page 17 The service provided is reliable, quick and effective, and it’s 100% better than I ever anticipated. Karen Chappell.

I have been trading for over 4 years now & having tried various forms of advertising, I have to say that the Roundabout magazines is by far the best. Debbie is very professional in the way she works and the quality of the magazine is excellent. Debbi ‘s Design and Decorating
