Isla Smiler - #Islastones So many people in Hinckley, and indeed worldwide, have been touched and affected by the sad news that Isla Tansey, known as Isla Smiler left us on 10th July. For anyone who doesn’t know, 7 year old Isla woke up last year unable to walk and after many horrible treatments, surgery and radiotherapy, Isla was diagnosed as having a rare brain tumour, a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma DIPG – for which there were no further treatment options for her. DIPG has a 0% survival rate, only 10% of children survive 2 years following their diagnosis and less than 1% survive for 5 years, the average survival is 9 months from diagnosis.

Isla and her incredibly strong family made the most of their time together making lots of precious memories. One of Isla’s dreams was to be famous, she certainly achieved that becoming famous with children and adults searching and posting pictures of themselves with their stones. Isla started to decorate stones and gave them to her friends to hide. Very quickly her Facebook group grew as it caught everyone’s imagination as people all over the world began painting and hiding stones. Stones have been hidden across the world including at the Taj Mahal, in New Zealand and a very special stone in Antarctica!

7

7

72,000 members from all around the world who are continuing to decorate and hide their stones. As many have said it has been so great that children particularly have been struck by the idea of painting and hiding the stones and looking for hidden stones. As a result it has taken them away from computer games and their mobile phones and encouraged them to be outside more. Many local businesses have offered services such as cardboard boxes, stones, paints etc. A local aggregates company have just named a newly delivered lorry Islastones. Isla would love the idea of a lorry with her name on it delivering stones. Since Isla left us there was a 2 week long tribute at the bandstand in Argent’s Mead and there were thousands of painted stones. Along with an exhibition of some of the stones being held at The Atkins Building during August there are also plans for a permanent memorial being considered. On Friday 27th July following a private funeral service, a very moving celebration of her life was held at Argents Mead when the stones were all removed to be rehidden. At all times Isla’s wonderful family, her parents Katherine and Simon along with her brother Harrison, have been so dignified and have been happy to share their private thoughts. Our thoughts are with them as they face life without Isla. There is no doubt that Isla’s legacy will live on and we really believe she will never be forgotten. You can follow #Islastones on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Isla chose weekly themes for her stones. She chose some fabulous themes such as Pets, Star Wars, Unicorns and Teddies. Isla really loved seeing all the posts on Facebook of children and adults posing with their painted stones before hiding them. Isla’s Facebook page #islastones, now has over

Bobotie Bobotie is a rich meat dish much loved by the South African people, and very tasty.

Ingredients 2 tbs vegetable oil 2 medium onions, finely diced 800g minced beef 2 slices of extra thick white bread 1/2 cup raisins 1 tbs apricot jam 1 tbs hot chutney 1/2 tbs curry powder 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 large egg 1 bay leaf

Method (Pre heat oven to 175° C) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Serves 4 people, preparation time 15 mins, cooking time 1 hour, 40 mins

Lightly grease a baking dish approx. 9” by 13”. Heat the oil in a pan and cook the onions until soft. Add the beef mince and cook until brown. Place the bread in a shallow dish and add the milk, drain off the excess milk and keep aside. Mix together the rest of the ingredients apart from the egg and left over milk. Place in the baking dish and cook for 1 hour. While the Bobotie bakes, whisk together the egg and remaining milk and add a pinch of salt. Lay the bread on top of the Bobotie. Pour the whisked egg/milk mix over the Bobotie and add the bay leaf on top, bake for a further 25minutes until the top is golden brown.

Welcome to our latest Newsletter It’s a fine line between being a consultant or salesman… especially as an Estate Agent. The competition between agents is fierce to win instructions and increase their stock. “We’ll try for the best price” means “I’ll over value to win the instruction”. It’s the same for the seller who says “I’m in no rush”, then prices the property too high and moans about a lack of viewings or offers. We all think our house is worth more than it probably is and feel offended when someone points out that actually it isn’t worth that at all. So, how do houses get over valued? One reason is greed. For example, the agent, having provided clear evidence, will value a property at around £100k and market around £110k to achieve it. The seller agrees but will then increase it to £120k on the day of placing the house on the market. Does the agent argue, or lose the instruction? It’s also not unknown that some agents are instructed by their head office to add £10k or £15k onto every valuation, and then have a concerted plan (over several months) of reduction. Play to the sellers’ ego, “we can put it on at whatever price you want”, and you’ll win the day. Wait long enough and a buyer will be found who will pay the price the seller wants. However, this isn’t the end of the story because the house isn’t actually sold, it’s under offer. Next appears the Valuation Surveyor, who armed with comparable evidence of similar sold properties decides that the house is worth £100k, not £120k.

He will recommend this to the lender and effectively “down values” the sale. The buyer pulls out and guess what? You’re back to square one. Which agent would you go for? Consultant or Salesman?

Landlord bashing seems to be the current fashion from rogue tenants to never ending legislation. If it’s not the Government trying to win over the tenant vote, or Councils discussing licencing, it’s the tenants not paying rent, or ruining the property. I can imagine that there won’t be much sympathy, but Landlords are currently facing an onslaught of costs. Most Landlords are well intended, legal and approachable with only one or two property owning types who just wish to enhance their pension. However, they’re now leaving the rental sector - in droves. The Government’s intention of course was to free up housing for first time buyers, and in this sense, it has worked. Since the 3% stamp duty tax was imposed on a second property purchase, there have never been so many first-time buyers in the market. The trouble is not every tenant can be a first-time buyer, and some currently find themselves having to move and trapped within a rental market that has a dwindling stock and subsequent rent rises. Landlord bashing might be a vote winner, but it has gone too far and instead of helping the housing market, the unintended consequence is damaging the industry and the very people whose votes they’re trying to attract.

Women that Connect Local Women’s Business Networking Group

A professional women’s business networking group for local businesses is proving to be extremely successful and is approaching its 2nd birthday and currently has 35 members. The Women that Connect Group is an exclusive membership group meaning only one member per profession/industry is invited to join meaning that the Group has a good, diverse mix of businesses. The launch meeting in September 2016 was a great success and subsequent meetings have proved similarly successful. It is certainly proving a great way for Leicestershire and Warwickshire women business owners to meet. The monthly lunchtime meetings, held at Ullesthorpe Court Hotel, are friendly and relaxed yet professional allowing members to build new business relationships whilst cementing existing ones and form new friendships.

Louise Mercieca of The Health Kick spoke at the July lunch meeting. Louise clearly demonstrated her knowledge on all things sugar and why it is so important to restrict the introduction of sugar to young children. As has been said a few times since the launch meeting we are privileged to hear such excellent presentations. It was again agreed that this is a fabulous group and it is great that members feel happy to speak so personally. Guests are welcome to attend a maximum of two meetings a year as long as there is no clash with a business who is already a member of the group. If you are interested in joining this successful group, please contact Debbie of Roundabout the Villages on 07751 211019 or email her at debbie@roundaboutthevillages.co.uk for further information and to see if the business slot is available. Why not take a look at the website and discover more about the members and the meetings.

Advert on Page 8 “Having always wanted to sail along the Norwegian Fjords, once we had decided to go on a cruise in 2018, Tracy at Not Just Travel asked us a few questions such as the type of ship we wanted, dates etc. She then promptly came back to us with an itinerary and excellent prices. We sailed off on our first cruise to Norway in April. The ship was just as we expected with really easy check in and Tracy had even managed to get us a cabin upgrade at no additional cost to us. From our initial enquiry through to booking the cruise, Tracy was both helpful and knowledgeable and helped to make our first cruise experience extremely enjoyable. I would highly recommend Tracy of Not Just Travel for any holiday you are considering or looking to book. Using a travel service is so much easier than booking online and costs no extra, so why would you not?” Debbie Heron, Owner of Roundabout the Villages

“Once again, Debbie did a fantastic job producing the programme for our annual gala dinner and charity auction. The finished article was delivered to a very high standard and was top quality. Our guests enjoyed browsing the programmes throughout the evening, and it provided a great a memento of the event. The digital version of the programme was another great resource, and enabled us to share our event far and wide to our supporters. Debbie is a delight to work with, and nothing is too much trouble!” Best wishes Jade Frost Tours and Marketing Coordinator
