Bobotie Bobotie is a rich meat dish much loved by the South African people, and very tasty.

Ingredients 2 tbs vegetable oil 2 medium onions, finely diced 800g minced beef 2 slices of extra thick white bread 1/2 cup raisins 1 tbs apricot jam 1 tbs hot chutney 1/2 tbs curry powder 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 large egg 1 bay leaf

Method (Pre heat oven to 175° C) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Serves 4 people, preparation time 15 mins, cooking time 1 hour, 40 mins

Lightly grease a baking dish approx. 9” by 13”. Heat the oil in a pan and cook the onions until soft. Add the beef mince and cook until brown. Place the bread in a shallow dish and add the milk, drain off the excess milk and keep aside. Mix together the rest of the ingredients apart from the egg and left over milk. Place in the baking dish and cook for 1 hour. While the Bobotie bakes, whisk together the egg and remaining milk and add a pinch of salt. Lay the bread on top of the Bobotie. Pour the whisked egg/milk mix over the Bobotie and add the bay leaf on top, bake for a further 25minutes until the top is golden brown.

Thanks to Mike Allen for the recipe

Welcome to our latest Newsletter It’s a fine line between being a consultant or salesman… especially as an Estate Agent. The competition between agents is fierce to win instructions and increase their stock. “We’ll try for the best price” means “I’ll over value to win the instruction”. It’s the same for the seller who says “I’m in no rush”, then prices the property too high and moans about a lack of viewings or offers. We all think our house is worth more than it probably is and feel offended when someone points out that actually it isn’t worth that at all. So, how do houses get over valued? One reason is greed. For example, the agent, having provided clear evidence, will value a property at around £100k and market around £110k to achieve it. The seller agrees but will then increase it to £120k on the day of placing the house on the market. Does the agent argue, or lose the instruction? It’s also not unknown that some agents are instructed by their head office to add £10k or £15k onto every valuation, and then have a concerted plan (over several months) of reduction. Play to the sellers’ ego, “we can put it on at whatever price you want”, and you’ll win the day. Wait long enough and a buyer will be found who will pay the price the seller wants. However, this isn’t the end of the story because the house isn’t actually sold, it’s under offer. Next appears the Valuation Surveyor, who armed with comparable evidence of similar sold properties decides that the house is worth £100k, not £120k.

He will recommend this to the lender and effectively “down values” the sale. The buyer pulls out and guess what? You’re back to square one. Which agent would you go for? Consultant or Salesman?

Landlord bashing seems to be the current fashion from rogue tenants to never ending legislation. If it’s not the Government trying to win over the tenant vote, or Councils discussing licencing, it’s the tenants not paying rent, or ruining the property. I can imagine that there won’t be much sympathy, but Landlords are currently facing an onslaught of costs. Most Landlords are well intended, legal and approachable with only one or two property owning types who just wish to enhance their pension. However, they’re now leaving the rental sector - in droves. The Government’s intention of course was to free up housing for first time buyers, and in this sense, it has worked. Since the 3% stamp duty tax was imposed on a second property purchase, there have never been so many first-time buyers in the market. The trouble is not every tenant can be a first-time buyer, and some currently find themselves having to move and trapped within a rental market that has a dwindling stock and subsequent rent rises. Landlord bashing might be a vote winner, but it has gone too far and instead of helping the housing market, the unintended consequence is damaging the industry and the very people whose votes they’re trying to attract.

ROADSHO

comes to tow

Monday 10th September 2018, 11 The Railway - Steamin Billy, Station Road THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in The Railway Steamin Billy and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel estimated at just £100 £200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be nervous or embarrassed. You will find our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash. Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex, valued at £2,000 - £3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The pub is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available.

So on Monday 10th September, you have the chance to visit the pub and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are some of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay for these articles. Listed below are a few items we require, but due to limited space not everything is listed, so if you are in any doubt, bring it along! LADIES - LOOK IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOXES If you have any old broken rings, chains, earrings, old gold wrist watches or items with stones missing, then bring down the box and let us surprise you. Amber and Jade, costume jewellery - high prices paid. We specialise in watches and listed below are just a few of the makes we require BROKEN OR WORKING ANY CONDITION Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Patek, Philippe, Vachron, PLUS MANY OTHER MAKES. Women that Connect Local Women’s Business Networking Group

A professional women’s business networking group for local businesses is proving to be extremely successful and is approaching its 2nd birthday and currently has 35 members. The Women that Connect Group is an exclusive membership group meaning only one member per profession/industry is invited to join meaning that the Group has a good, diverse mix of businesses. The launch meeting in September 2016 was a great success and subsequent meetings have proved similarly successful. It is certainly proving a great way for Leicestershire and Warwickshire women business owners to meet. The monthly lunchtime meetings, held at Ullesthorpe Court Hotel, are friendly and relaxed yet professional allowing members to build new business relationships whilst cementing existing ones and form new friendships.

Louise Mercieca of The Health Kick spoke at the July lunch meeting. Louise clearly demonstrated her knowledge on all things sugar and why it is so important to restrict the introduction of sugar to young children. As has been said a few times since the launch meeting we are privileged to hear such excellent presentations. It was again agreed that this is a fabulous group and it is great that members feel happy to speak so personally. Guests are welcome to attend a maximum of two meetings a year as long as there is no clash with a business who is already a member of the group. If you are interested in joining this successful group, please contact Debbie of Roundabout the Villages on 07751 211019 or email her at debbie@roundaboutthevillages.co.uk for further information and to see if the business slot is available. Why not take a look at the website and discover more about the members and the meetings.

You can help make it a ‘Magical Christmas’ for local people in need Local charity, Charity Link, has joined forces with Curve Theatre to put on a very special event on 15th December, ‘Magical Christmas’. Seats have been reserved to enable the most vulnerable people in our local community to watch a Curve Christmas production, along with having a hot meal, interval drink, ice-cream and show programme. Charity Link is now asking local businesses and the wider community to come together to help fund places for the event. For over 140 years Charity Link has been working to ensure that local people have the basics in life, no matter what crisis, illness, disability or difficulty they may be experiencing. In addition to providing essential items, including food, clothing, beds and cookers, Charity Link has seen in the past what a difference this type of Christmas experience can make to people going through really tough times. In conjunction with local business woman and long-term supporter, Rachel Hargrave of RDZ PR, the idea was formed of offering a Christmas theatre experience on a much larger scale. Curve, which is dedicated to ensuring that everyone who lives, works or learns in Leicestershire has access to great art, was instantly inspired and supportive of the event. Susan McEniff, Director of Charity Link, says: “We’ve been able to provide a few tickets to

Christmas productions in the past and we’ve seen how this can really brighten a family’s Christmas, even at the worst of times. Magical Christmas will help vulnerable people to feel part of the local community, take them away from the stresses of daily life for a few hours and, particularly for children and young people, give them the opportunity to dream and be inspired, which could leave a lasting legacy”. Each guest place for Magical Christmas costs £45, with Curve (also a registered charity) offering items associated with the event at cost price. Guests will be clients of Charity Link and those supported by its network of agencies. Susan adds: “Quite simply, the more support Magical Christmas receives, the more Christmas’s we can help to transform! Each £45 enables another person facing hardship or crisis to attend the event which will have a fantastically uplifting atmosphere - we really hope that local people and businesses will want to be part of that.” Businesses who fund a number of guest places can take advantage of promotional opportunities associated with the event. Individuals can also fund seats or can choose to be part of an online ‘crowd funding’ scheme where every donation of £20, £10 or even £1 will help to ensure that more local people can experience a Magical Christmas.

Donations are needed ASAP so that places can be confirmed. For full details of the event or to donate visit www.charity-link.org/magical-christmas or call Susan on 0116 222 2212.

Leicester Animal Aid has added an exciting element to its traditional charity firewalk. For the first time not only will you be able to hot-foot it across a bed of burning coals but you’ll also get to bare your soles as you navigate your way over broken glass! Both events are run by Blaze, a professional organisation, who have more than 30 years’ experience putting on these type of events. The challenge takes place under the guidance of a trained Blaze certified professional instructor and full training is given on the night. The money raised will help to support the lost, abandoned and relinquished animals that come into the Centre. It will help to provide food, veterinary treatment, toys, a warm bed and a safe and loving place to stay until they find their new forever home. Fundraisers can take on both elements or decide just to do the firewalk or glasswalk. Registration for the Fire & Ice Challenge is £50 which covers the cost of both of your walks and we ask that you pledge to raise £120 in sponsorship. Registration for the Ice Challenge only is £20 which covers the cost of your walk and we ask that you pledge to raise £50 in sponsorship.

Gorgeous Cassie, a five-yearold crossbreed, has been waiting patiently for a new family for more than a year. She is a very loyal, sensitive and loving girl. Unfortunately, Cassie has learnt in life that not everyone is kind and gentle and therefore she can feel anxious when meeting strangers. She is looking for an experienced dog owner who has previous experience in caring for a dog that needs a little time to get to know new people and in the right way that helps build her confidence and keeps everyone happy and smiling. Lovely boy, Tigger, is 18-months old and is waiting to explore the big wide world. Before coming to the Centre he was a house cat but now would love the freedom to get out and about. He’d need an experienced adult only home with someone who has the patience and understanding to help him settle in. He would also need to be the only pet in the household.

Registration for the Fire Challenge only is £40 which covers the cost of your walk and we ask that you pledge to raise £100 in sponsorship. To find out more and register for the event visit www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk/fire-ice.

Having decided to change our hallway carpet to wooden flooring I spoke to David of DK Flooring. He visited us to measure up and also brought many samples for us to choose from. From our initial enquiry through to having the flooring fitted, David was very helpful and knowledgeable and made having new flooring easy and it looks superb. I have no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending his service. Debbie Heron, Owner and Editor of Roundabout Hinckley

Robert McVey Joinery Services Advert on Page 13 The new oak and glass banister and additional veneering fitted by Rob and Nathan has transformed our traditional staircase! Our hallway now looks light, bright and much more modern. Rob and Nathan are master craftsmen of their trade, and their work is extremely professional. In addition, their work is great value for money when compared with much bigger national companies. I have no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending their services. Kate W

“Once again, Debbie did a fantastic job producing the programme for our annual gala dinner and charity auction. The finished article was delivered to a very high standard and was top quality. Our guests enjoyed browsing the programmes throughout the evening, and it provided a great a memento of the event. The digital version of the programme was another great resource, and enabled us to share our event far and wide to our supporters. Debbie is a delight to work with, and nothing is too much trouble! Best wishes Jade Frost Tours and Marketing Coordinator
