Spanish red wine chicken, with peppers and mixed olives This dish from the southeast of Spain is the perfect family meal for Autumn. A rich, tasty and filling dish that will satisfy the hungriest family member. Ingredients

Method

1 large chicken 2 large white Spanish onions 2 red bell peppers 2 yellow bell peppers 1/4 bottle of quality Spanish red wine 1 pint of chicken stock 3 rashers of streaky bacon (chopped into lardons) 1 garlic bulb (crushed) pinch of saffron small carton of mixed olives 1/2 tsp of medium chilli powder sprig of thyme plain flour for dusting chicken

Cut the whole chicken into 6 pieces (your butcher can do this). Dust the chicken pieces in the flour and place in a large pan in a little oil, cook on a med heat to brown both sides, now set aside. Dice the onion into large chunks and add to the chicken with the bacon lardons, garlic, saffron and chilli powder. The Spanish like to blacken the peppers before adding to the dish, this adds great, full depth of flavour. To blacken, either hold peppers over a naked flame of the cooker hob or grill turning them regularly. Put the chicken in a hot oven (170c) for 10 mins. Now add the red wine along with the chicken stock and peppers and cook for a further 25 mins. This should reduce by half the volume and thicken to a nice sauce. Add the sprig of thyme, cover and rest for 10 mins, add the mixed olives before serving.

Thanks to Mike Allen for the recipe

Enjoy the dish with hot crusty bread or even patatas bravas!!!

Community Page Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA)

A word from the local air ambulance… At this time of year we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has so far raised money for us this year. In September we had our third annual Air Ambulance Week, which saw our supporters flock to the streets to paint their towns yellow and hand out badges in exchange for donations. Our totals are still being added up, but it looks like we’ve had another successful year thanks to our wonderful volunteers. Thanks to you, we have been able to come to the rescue of over 500 people so far this year. People like Stephen Underwood, who was engulfed in flames after an accident at his workplace in Leicestershire. Stephen sustained horrific injuries to his hands, arms, chest and face while working in the pit at his garage workplace after fumes ignited. Paramedics who attended the scene called the air ambulance and within 15 minutes of their request, Stephen

was at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, receiving lifesaving treatment – a road journey of 28 miles that would have taken much longer. “I try not to think too much about what could have happened but I know that I wouldn’t be here now if it hadn’t been for the air ambulance crew and medical teams who looked after me,” he says. As we receive no government funding, we really couldn’t keep doing our lifesaving work without you. Each one of our missions costs an average of £1,700, and we go out on approximately three missions every single day of the year. Our supporters lift us in the air – literally! To find out how you can help, or if you’d like more information about our service, give us a call on 03003 045 999 or email enquiries@wndlrairambulance.org.uk

Bamboozle is a charity based in Leicester who create magical, multi-sensory experiences for children who have learning disabilities and the whole family. You may have seen over the past few issues that Roundabout Hinckley and Roundabout the Villages have featured news from the charity and we’d like to share more with our readers about the beginnings of this inspirational cause. Twenty three years ago, in 1994, Bamboozle was formed by two local theatre practitioners, Christopher Davies and Sue Pyecroft, through the desire to create work for, and with, children and young people with learning difficulties. “Christopher and I have worked in making theatre throughout our careers. My specialist area was design and production, and Christopher’s specialism was in teaching and directing”, reflects Sue. “We were very inspired by working with young people who have learning disabilities, and saw there was a real lack of quality theatre that was specially designed for audiences who had special educational needs and sensory impairments”. Christopher and Sue joined the Leicestershire Drama Advisory service in the '80s, and as part of this, they worked closely with special schools. After their experience at the Advisory service, they became freelance theatre practitioners, and started delivery creative projects around the Midlands and the North. During this time, Sue was inspired by working with Interplay in Leeds: a renowned theatre company working with people with learning difficulties. Christopher and Sue wanted to do more. After gaining support from Headteachers at a few local special schools, and the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester, they set up a week-long residency designed for disabled children to participate in an experience of drama and music which was fully accessible and included all of the senses. The week was a great success and attracted media attention from a local paper who did featured the project. Sue and Christopher were asked what the name of the company was... neither of them had thought of that! But Sue quickly replied 'it’s Bamboozle!' The rest is history. Bamboozle continues to provide residencies for families who have a child with complex needs and children who are on the autistic spectrum in Leicestershire and Nottingham. In 2010, Bamboozle made their first touring theatre production, Where the Wild Things Are, which toured to special schools around the country. Now Bamboozle takes their shows not only to schools and theatres in the UK, but around the world. This September, Christopher has been training artists in Singapore in Bamboozle’s unique approach to making theatre for young audiences with learning disabilities. “One of the things that we’re trying to do is to make disability more visible because largely disability is hidden away. It’s brilliant that Bamboozle’s mission: to provide creative opportunities for children to engage meaningfully with the world, is being recognised by the international arts community”. To find out more about Bamboozle’s amazing work, visit their website: www.bamboozletheatre.co.uk. St Mary’s with St Francis, Hinckley Christmas Tree Festival 30th Nov - 4th Dec 2017 This year sees the 7th annual St Marys Christmas Tree Festival. Last year’s event was extremely successful attracting over 2000 visitors to the beautiful church in the centre of Hinckley. To help make this year’s festival even bigger and better, the committee would like to invite as many newcomers as possible to join in the festivities. A bigger event with more trees will provide a higher profile for you when you exhibit a tree, sponsor an event or provide a raffle prize. You have free reign on how you decorate your tree and how much you want it to represent your business, community group, activity, school or family. Money raised throughout the festival will go towards the renovation and on-going maintenance of the church and raffle tickets will be available throughout the festival. We at Roundabout the Villages are delighted to be designing and producing the programme for the Christmas Tree Festival for the third year running. The Festival launches on Thursday 30th November at 6:30pm and the lights will be turned on at 7pm. There will be music and entertainment from the church’s robed choir and band. There will be mulled wine and mince pies available. There will be further events during the Festival. Further details and information are available on the church’s website www.stmaryshinckley.co.uk

Martin & Co Hinckley Office 99-109 Castle Street, Hinckley, Leics, LE10 1DA

01455 636349 hinckley@martinco.com A new study has revealed that 31% of tenants in rented accommodation cannot imagine ever owning their own home. The research also revealed that more than a fifth (21%) of renters think that the removal of mortgage interest tax relief on buy-to-let properties, which came into force in April 2017, will reduce the supply of rented properties in their area. Some of the tenants surveyed were also concerned that they will face rent hikes as buy-to-let landlords pass on the higher costs. 6% said that their landlord had already or will increase the rent as a direct result of the tax changes. Affordability and access to mortgage loans were key reasons why many Brits rent. Half of the tenants surveyed live in rented accommodation because they can't afford to buy their own home, 11% were renting because they were currently unable to obtain a mortgage. Just 14% of those renting was doing so out of preference. The survey also looked at the profiles of people in rented accommodation, it found that more women (57%) than men (43%) were tenants; 39% were single households, 28% were families with children and 23% were couples. One in ten of people surveyed share their home with flat or housemates. Commenting on the research, Matt Sanders from GoCompare Mortgages said, "Our research reveals that half of all tenants are in rental accommodation because they can't afford to buy their own home. It now looks like many have given up all hope of ever owning a home and, for some, the changes to buy-to-let regulations are likely to make renting more expensive. In turn, that makes saving for a mortgage even harder. April saw profound changes to the taxation of buy-to-let properties which will reduce landlords' profits and our survey suggests that there is a real concern among tenants that to protect their profits, over time some landlords will increase rents while others may sell-up - reducing the stock of available private rented homes. Business expansion has always been an ambition for Steve, and on the 1st of September he purchased the existing Martin & Co Northampton Franchise, as you can see it’s currently in the older branded colours (which Steve aims to change sooner rather than later), and the new Nuneaton shop opened on the 1st October. Exciting times!

Local Women’s Business Networking Group celebrates its First Year Birthday Meeting A professional women’s business networking group which launched last year for local businesses has recently celebrated its first year birthday. Women that Connect has proved to be extremely successful and currently has 36 members. It is an exclusive membership group meaning only one member per profession or industry is invited to join which means it has a good, diverse mix of businesses. The launch meeting in September 2016 was a great success and subsequent meetings have proved similarly successful. It is proving a great way for Leicestershire and Warwickshire women business owners to meet. The monthly lunchtime meetings are friendly and relaxed yet professional, allowing members to build new business relationships whilst cementing existing ones. Women that Connect is a fabulous group of dynamic, vibrant local businesswomen and since the launch last year a lot of business has been exchanged as well as some good friendships formed. Along with a 2-course lunch and drink, members introduce their businesses. This is then followed by a presentation by one of the members giving more details about their business. Presenting at our first birthday meeting was Clare Farrell, owner of the local Financial Advice Company, Northfield Wealth Management.

27 27

Clare gave an interesting and informative presentation on pensions and the reasoning behind the disparities regarding when pensions can now be taken. After the speaker, there also a forum where members can ask for advice on any issues they may be experiencing in their businesses. With our meeting format, members “Lunch and Learn”. Another member, Kate of The Bakewell Tart, made a beautiful cake to celebrate the first year in the pink and white colours of the group logo. The cake included many words that members had used to describe the group. Guests are very welcome to attend a maximum of two meetings a year if there is no clash with a business who is already a member of the group. The meetings are held at Ullesthorpe Court Hotel and the next meetings are on Wednesday 11th October and Wednesday 8th November. Anyone who is interested in coming along to see what it is all about and to see if they would like to join this successful group, should contact Debbie of Roundabout the Villages by email at debbie@roundaboutthevillages.co.uk or call 07751 211019 for further information and to see if the business slot is available. To see more why not take a look at the website www.womenthatconnect.co.uk to discover more about the members and the meetings.

See what some of say abo "When I first moved to Hinckley nearly two years ago, I found Roundabout Hinckley an invaluable source of information about local businesses and events. After launching my own business, I got to know Debbie through networking and realised pretty quickly where the tone of cheerful helpfulness that defines Roundabout Hinckley came from. Debbie is so incredibly supportive of good local businesses, and the service she provides is really the best round!"

“I only advertise with Debbie Heron of Roundabout Hinckley and Roundabout the Villages as I know that they are quality magazines with only one business type in its content. Debbie is professional, approachable and provides a first class service when producing your advert and nothing is too much trouble at a reasonable cost. I have no hesitation in recommending her services to businesses that wish to promote themselves within quite a large area around Hinckley and its surrounding villages.”

“We have been working with Debbie for a number of years now and the service we receive is the same now as it was on day 1 – just excellent! Debbie is really attentive to her clients and goes that extra mile to ensure they get the most out of their advertising. We would highly recommend Debbie and the Roundabout publications to any business who wants to grow their business!”.

“I have just started my second year of my travel business and have had numerous magazines ask me to advertise with them. What makes Roundabout Hinckley and the Villages Magazines different is its owners Debbie and Nick. They offer exclusivity within their magazines to high quality businesses so you are not competing with other businesses within your market sector. The magazine is designed to engage its audience and is not just full of adverts so customers tend to retain the magazine and you can get leads months after you have advertised. They are there to advise on the best content for your advert but also design for you, for them it is about what is best for you as a business and not what makes up their bottom line. They become your friends and are constant mentors to you for your business always at the end of the telephone if you need advice or guidance. I can whole heartedly say the best decision I made was to advertise with Roundabout.” Tracy Allen, Not Just Travel

f our customers out us

I have advertised with Roundabout for many years and have been very happy with the response and leads generated from her magazine. Debbie is an excellent marketer and also loyal to her clients with her magazines exclusivity. Well done Debs, keep up the good work! Steve Chadwick, Martin & Co

“We have had our advertisement with Roundabout Hinckley for almost 8 years now. Your magazine has proved to be very good for Progress Windows over the years and we are extremely proud to be a part of your growing success. We would highly recommend not only your magazine but yourself, Debbie you’re not only a lovely lady but professional, helpful and a very supportive person. We hope to continue to be a part of your magazine for many years to come.” Paul Hines, Progress Windows

“I am a regular advertiser in Roundabout Hinckley and I have found it has done wonders for my business. Due to my presence in the magazine, I have been contacted by a wide range of local businesses and individuals. Debbie’s ethical and caring approach to advertising, as well as her outstanding customer service, is second to none. You know you can always trust the businesses that advertise in Debbie’s magazines due to her careful checks, only choosing trusted local businesses with a good reputation.” Louisa Sando-Patel

“Debbie has been instrumental in designing my advert for the Roundabout magazines and I would have been lost without her! Debbie has considerable experience in advertising and knows the layouts that bring the most business. I have had two clients book services from one month of advertising. Debbie is always there at the end of an email or telephone to answer any questions about the magazines and their readership. I feel that without Debbie and the Roundabout Magazines I would have not realised the opportunity for my business to grow.” Julia Curran

Think about Therapy

“We would just like to say a massive thank you to Debbie at Roundabout Hinckley. We appreciate being the exclusive recruitment company in Roundabout Hinckley” Simon Sparrow Andrew McQuillan

“I have been advertising with Debbie for almost 12 months and cannot fault her outstanding customer service. Not only does Debbie produce such high-quality magazines at an affordable cost, she always goes the extra mile if you need design suggestions, tweaking of content or artwork etc., nothing is ever too much trouble for Debbie”. Debbie Heron aka “Roundabout Hinckley and Roundabout the Villages”. In a word – brilliant!” Christine Hewitt

“I have advertised with Roundabout Hinckley and the Villages for over 5 years now and know that the service given by Debbie at Roundabout Towers is second to none. Others may try and copy, but there is definitely only one Roundabout, and the others just can not compete.” Roy Lee

Leicester Animal Aid Long Term Residents One of the most difficult parts of working in rescue is seeing dogs and cats full of life and love being overlooked day after day. Residents often become longer stays because of simple characteristics, such as coat colour, age, breed and size, and it’s the preconceptions around these that lead animals being dismissed before they have a chance to show their true selves. Sometimes they stay longer because of behavioural issues, and we never hide that some of our residents have needed more time and help, or will continue to do so, but we ask you to remember that this is not their fault. Those that take the time and patience to get to know them, receive huge rewards in return. Many of our longer stay dogs would be extremely loyal and affectionate companions to those that are kind and caring to them because they appreciate how much this means. Boo Boo Bear, our six year old Staffie, really struggled when he first arrived in December 2016. He didn’t like being in kennels, he was scared, and as a result, reacted to new people and other dogs in an anxious way. We’ve slowly built up his exposure to both. For example, this has included walking by other dogs at a distance, then walking nearer to another dog, getting a chance to say hello, walking next to each other and then having some

off lead. Now Boo Boo Bear loves spending his time with other dogs, but sadly he keeps finding all of his friends have homes and is being left behind. Beautiful Sophie came to us due to her owner no longer being able to care for her. She is our longest feline resident having arrived with us five months ago. She loves plenty of attention but will let you know once she’s had enough and wants a little 'me time.' Sophie would love a home where she is the only pet in the household and where there are no children. If you feel you may be able offer a home to Boo Boo Bear, Sophie or any of other residents then you can fill in an interested parties form which is on our website www.leciesteranimalaid.org.uk or give us a call on 01455 888257. You can see more of our lovely cats and dogs that have been re-homed in our 2018 calendar. It’s just £4.50 and all the proceeds go towards helping our cats and dogs here at the centre. We also have Christmas cards too.

Leicester Animal Aid is a rescue and rehoming centre for cats and dogs, based just outside of the South Leicester village of Huncote. www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk Email: info@leicesteranimalaid.org.uk Leicester Animal Aid, Forest Road, Huncote, Leicester LE9 3LE Registered charity number: 242560

Advert on Page 4 "When our Women that Connect Business Networking Group recently celebrated its 1st Year Birthday I wanted to have a cake for all the members. As Kate of The Bake Well Tart is a member of the group, as well as an advertiser with Roundabout she was the obvious choice. Nothing was too much trouble for her and after we had a conversation about what I was hoping for, Kate was superb at first producing a drawing of her intended design and then making it. The cake exceeded my expectations and everyone commented on what a fabulous cake it was.* Kate’s helpfulness and sense of humour made it a pleasure to work with her*

Kate is so incredibly skilled at what she does and I can highly recommend her if you are looking for a cake for any occasion. Debbie Heron. Roundabout Hinckley owner and founder of Women that Connect * picture of cake on Page 27

Advert on Page 4 “Another brilliant service provided by Jordan Motors. Over the years I’ve experienced many garages from those where you dodge the oil etc. Jordan Motors stands out from these and I won’t be changing where I go from now on. When you step inside the garage you are greeted with a smile and the customer service is brilliant. They go above and beyond to help you and provide clear advice and guidance on what work needs to be done. I’ve used Jordan Motors for a car service, MOT and most recently new tyres – where they were very competitive on prices. For the MOT, you get a lovely text reminder too. You don’t need to worry about missing your next MOT! I cannot recommend them enough. And even better, if you didn’t want to sit and wait for your MOT in their lovely reception area, you can go for a mooch at Fosse Park a short walk away.” B Pope
