For those of us of a certain age it has been a sad start to the year hearing of the passing of some iconic figures from the world of music and entertainment. January saw the passing of music giant David Bowie, former Radio 1 DJ Ed Stewart (forever known as Stewpot), actor Alan Rickman and most recently Sir Terry Wogan. There has been a lot of discussion and comment about how we can be affected by the death of someone we do not know personally. I think it has much to do with how those people affected or influenced our own lives, something you don’t really think about at the time. I was never a particularly massive Bowie fan, my CD collection containing just one Greatest Hits compilation. But as a teenager in the 70s, he was just one of those figures that dominated the TV and Radio. He was one of the most influential musicians of his or any era. Alongside the music and many hits he also had a successful acting career both in the theatre as well as on screen. Before that I grew up listening Ed Stewpot’s Junior Choice most weekends. I remember the thrill of having a dedication played and hearing my name read out on national radio. In 2007 Junior Choice was revived for a Christmas Morning special and it became a firm favourite and nostalgic treat again in our house listening to those familiar songs , such as Captain Beaky and My Bruvver! Alan Rickman was a highly acclaimed British actor whose career ranged from The Royal Shakespeare Company to playing arch villain Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films. Rickman’s voice made him an ideal choice for a villain which led to roles such as Hans Gruber in Die Hard and the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as love Actually and Sense and Sensibility. Terry Wogan was another figure who became part of everyday culture. I can’t remember a time when he wasn’t on either the TV or Radio. There was his long running breakfast show on Radio 2 in the 70s and early 80s. This was followed by his prime time BBC1 chat show which was on three times a week. Also who will forget his sardonic and humorous commentaries on the Eurovision Song Contest? He loved to send the show up but obviously enjoyed the absurdity of it all. From 1980 until 2014 he was the main presenter of the annual Children in Need Charity Appeal. All that is left to say is thanks for the memories and it must be an interesting place where you are now all gathered!

View from the stand (well armchair really!) So we are into February and Leicester City is still mixing it with the big boys at the top of the Premier League. They came through the difficult Christmas and New Year period relatively unscathed losing just the one game. In fact they went from top by one point to second only on goal difference so passed that test. They have now played every team at least once and have lost just two games all season.

Now they face a different test. Up until now most neutral observers and pundits whilst rightly praising them have still been forecasting them to slide down the table at some point. Leicester was still the over achieving plucky underdog. That seems to be changing. The expectation level is increasing. People are starting to talk seriously about Leicester qualifying for the Champions League or even, whisper it quietly, winning the league. How Leicester deal with the added expectation and pressure will determine where they finish this season. The early exit from the FA Cup, somewhat unlucky given the controversial late penalty given against them in the first match at Spurs, may be a blessing in disguise. City can now concentrate solely on the league matches (14 left at time of writing) while their rivals have FA Cup and European games to negotiate. Transfer deadline day came and went with no new players coming in. Despite being linked with a number of strikers and the Manager indicating that he would like to add to the squad, they were unable to do any business. The good news was that no senior players left despite rumours in the media about the likes of Vardy and Mahrez, although a couple of squad members were allowed to go out on loan. Leicester did bring in three players earlier in January. Demarai Gray, Daniel Amartey and Daniel Iversen are all up and coming young players showing Leicester are building for the long term. Leicester Tigers have progressed comfortably though to the knock out stages of the European Cup and secured a home Quarter Final against French side Stade Francais, a team they have already beaten at Welford Road this season. Because Tigers qualified as second seeds from the group stages, should they win the quarter final, they are also guaranteed a home game in the semi final. Given the importance of home advantage, Tigers will see this as their best chance of making the final for a long time. Tigers are already planning for next season having announced the signings of South African international winger JP Pietersen and Australian international Matt Toomua. Leicestershire have announced a profit for the last financial year turning around a deficit from the previous year. It is further good news following the news that they have been given permission to install floodlights in time for next seasons T20 campaign and that they have signed a ground-naming rights deal with a local company. From next season Grace Road will be known as the Fischer County Ground.

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Charity Article Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) Make 2016 a memorable year with Air Ambulance

Although we are already well into the New Year there is still time to set yourself a challenge for 2016. With the help of Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) this could be a memorable year for you! The charity is looking for people to sign up for one of their fundraising challenges which not only raise cash but give individuals the once-in-a-lifetime chance to do something extraordinary. The fantastic opportunities on offer range from cycling across the Great Wall of China, wing walking, skydiving and trekking through the rainforest in Borneo to running marathons and completing Tough Mudder obstacle courses. There are experiences for everyone, and team challenges for people who want to get a group of friends, neighbours or fellow villagers together and raise vital funds. When supporters sign up, they will receive a pack in the post about their chosen event, and be put in touch with their local fundraising coordinator, to help them achieve their fundraising target. If these events don’t appeal to you, there are plenty of other ways you can get involved with DLRAA. For example you can become a volunteer, organise a fundraising event or donate unwanted clothes, mobile phones, office equipment – even cars to the charity. Whatever your ideas, strengths or ambitions, why not get in touch to see how you could get involved and make a difference this year. To find out more, please call the charity on 08454 130999, email enquiries@theairambulanceservice.org.uk, or visit www.theairambulanceservice.org.uk/fundraising-challenges. Readers may remember the appeal in the last edition of ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY to suggest songs for a playlist for DLRAA crews and supporters to listen to over Christmas. Many thanks to those who suggested tunes. There were over 200 of which 50 made the final playlist.

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Community Page Your Local Police Update

As a Neighbourhood Policing Area we have recently been spending a lot of time working on reducing reports of anti social behaviour within Hinckley Town Centre. Although this might not affect you directly, I‟m sure many of you will come to the town to shop, or to visit the new Crescent complex, so this work may be of interest to you. Over the past few months reports of anti social behaviour have increased in the town, mainly due to reports of young people hanging around after school, causing a nuisance and being rowdy, which some residents have found intimidating. We take anti social behaviour very seriously and will deploy a wide range of resources and tactics to tackle it because we know it affects people‟s lives. Anti social behaviour is complex to deal with (there is no actual „crime‟ as such for us to simply make an arrest) so we work together with other services to devise the best course of action to try to resolve the problem. To get a full understanding of the problem we need reports from the public, so if you experience what you feel to be anti social behaviour whilst in the town centre please report it to us by calling 101. Over the last few months we have received an increase in reports of thefts from motor vehicles, with many cars being broken into as they were left insecure or with items on show. I would like to take this opportunity to urge residents to take precautions to reduce your chances of become a victim by making sure your vehicle is locked when you leave it with no items left on show. As well as high value items such as electronics and phones, items such as bags, boxes and coats can also be tempting to thieves. Remember you might know these items have no value but this won‟t stop someone breaking in to find out. Although burglaries have not increased within the Borough we would like to remind people to remain vigilant and ensure your property is secure at all times. This includes locking doors and windows when you go out or are in another part of the property. It is also a good idea to remove ladders, garden furniture, bins etc. from gardens and fronts of buildings so that they can‟t be used to climb on roofs to gain access. Also make sure that garages and garden sheds are fitted with solid locks and that hinges cannot be removed easily. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Inspector Dan Eveleigh, Hinckley and Blaby Neighbourhood Policing Commander

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Advertorial Martin & Co (Hinckley)

2015 was a relatively busy year for the Sales market, despite it being affected by the election where a “bounce” occurred and then volumes subsequently dropped every month leading to December. Encouragingly Leicestershire average prices increased by 4.2% (see below from Land Registry)

House prices rose across the board with Detached houses averaging £251,039, Semi-Detached at £135,787, Terraced at £109,448 and flats at £86,048 (see below from Land Registry)

So, what are the predictions for 2016? Well, it seems to be varied. It‟s certainly been a busy start to the year with first time buyers and investors enquiring and viewing many advertised properties. Cash buyers are plentiful due to people downsizing or cashing in their pensions. With the Chancellor seemingly attacking the buy-to-let sector with tax hikes in stamp duty and eventually income, it‟ll be interesting to see how the rental sector adapts to the changes. If you wish to discuss selling or renting your home please call Martin & Co on 01455 636349 to arrange a free market appraisal. A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Community Page MEP to talk on EU exit vote Emma McClarkin, MEP for the East Midlands will be visiting Hinckley this month to talk to local businesses ahead of the forthcoming EU referendum. The MEP will speak on „The advantages and disadvantages of staying in the European Union, the financial implications and effects of free movement of people‟. This will be followed by a Question and Answer session where local business representatives can put their questions to Emma.

The event which is being hosted by the Hinckley and District Chamber of Trade will take place at Cafe Espanol in The Atkins Building, Lower Bond Street on the 23rd February, starting at 6:00pm. In addition to the Hinckley and District Chamber of Trade members, other leading business groups in the area will be represented including the Hinckley Town Centre Partnership (HTCP). The Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth, Councillor Janice Richards will also be there. Chamber of Trade president Rosemary Wright said “Many businesses in the UK are unhappy with our relationship with the EU. They feel that EU regulations hinder their business, make it difficult to grow and create jobs and want the UK to take back control of trade negotiations and legislation. On the other hand there are those whose opinions are the exact opposite and think that as part of Europe we should be in. There are others who will not decide until the conditions and concessions the Government are currently negotiating are announced. This is one of the most important decisions for Business and for Society in general for many years and this presentation by Emma McClarkin is aimed at helping business to get the decision right. The presentation is designed to help businesses to decide whether to vote IN or OUT when they have heard all sides of the argument.” The Hinckley and District Chamber of Trade are a non-political group representing businesses in the whole of the Borough of Hinckley and Bosworth. It was re-launched a year ago and in that time membership has increased threefold. It is representing member business interests on several working groups in liaison with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and HTCP, including car parking and traffic flow in the town centre, amongst others. *As a member of the Chamber of Trade we are looking forward to meeting Emma and to attending this event and listening to the advantages and disadvantage of European membership.

Local Recruitment Firm Supports Hinckley Area Foodbank

The build up to Christmas was a busy time for a local recruitment company S&L Personnel and not just when it comes to finding work for local people. The team at S&L Personnel ran a charity tombola stall at the Hinckley Christmas light switch on and also collected donations whilst giving away Santa hats and Balloons at other Christmas light switch on celebrations across the area, all to raise funds for the Hinckley Area foodbank. Andy Cleaver, Manager of the Foodbank, commented “The Foodbank has been used thousands of times by local families who face a very real choice of heating or eating. This is a choice no one should have to face, but with the ever increasing cost of living, more and more people find themselves needing to come to us for emergency food parcels”. Simon Sparrow, Director at S&L Personnel said “We are proud to announce that the team raised a fantastic £500, which will go a long way to support the excellent work that the foodbank do”. He added “It was really great to take a little time out to get involved with and support our local community and we look forward to supporting the foodbank as our chosen charity through 2016” For more information about the Hinckley Area foodbank and ways in which you can help please contact the Project Manager at the Food Bank, Andy, on 01455 697390. A ROUNDABOUT

HINCKLEY Charity Article

Cats In Need (Hinckley and Nuneaton) Registered Charity No. 1042283

Cats In Need is a small locally based charity run entirely by local volunteers who foster the cats in their own homes. They do not have access to a sanctuary. Squint and Skyla who were featured in our last issue have now found their new forever home. Skyla Squint However we still have many other cats and kittens waiting to be re-homed. To see some of the cats currently looking for homes please take a look at www.catchat.org under Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Some of our cats requiring loving homes: Gizmo is looking for a new home after the loss of her owner who she was a constant source of comfort and companionship to during a long illness. She is a happy healthy girl who loves to spend time outdoors playing and hunting leaves but also very friendly and loves a cuddle on a lap. She is very confident with meeting people, after all a new face is a new lap to sit on ! Her Gizmo favourite sleeping spots are on the backs of chairs and even better a radiator. She has previously lived with another cat. Eddie came in to us with two other cats after the death of his owner. He was in quite a state with very manky ears. Unfortunately he tested positive for FiV (feline AIDS). With good food he soon turned himself around and is a lovely boy. FiV is no longer the death sentence it once was and with good care many cats reach a normal life span. Eddie is a placid boy who loves company and would need an indoor home with lots of fuss and food available. Eddie is a special boy who deserves a special home which we hope someone will give him.

A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Charity Article CHARITY URGENTLY APPEALS FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP COMBAT LONELINESS Contact the Elderly, the only charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is urgently appealing for volunteers living in Hinckley to spare just a few hours each month to drive one or two older people to a local tea party - and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves! Or to welcome a small group of people into their home for a tea party, just one or two afternoons a year. The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities – providing a regular and vital friendship link every month. Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host‟s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. The charity‟s existing group in Hinckley is currently under threat due to a lack of volunteer hosts and in order to keep the monthly tea parties going, it is in need of volunteer drivers who are able to collect older guests from their homes and accompany them to the gathering each month, and volunteer hosts to welcome the group into their homes for tea once or twice a year Contact the Elderly runs a popular group in Hinckley but in order to ensure that it continues to thrive, the charity is making an appeal for more coordinators who would be able to help organise the tea parties and liaise with the older guests and volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly every month. Furthermore, the coordinator must be able to drive one or two older guests to the tea parties one Sunday a month, or host an afternoon tea party once or twice a year. Contact the Elderly‟s Midlands and North West Development Officer, Prabina Lord, said: “Anyone who can spare a couple of hours one Sunday a month, has a driving licence, a car and a capacity for drinking tea, is eligible! For those interested in becoming a host, it would involve just a couple of hours once or twice a year. It‟s not a big commitment, and our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I‟m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.”

Hinckley residents interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly can contact Prabina Lord, Midlands and North West on 0161 460 2950 or email prabina.lord@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

Our dedicated team provide individual care and attention to in a safe and loving environment until a new home can be found. A ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY Community Page Youth Champion and Fairtrade Forum Member

Happy New Year! Yes, I know we're into February now but this is my first opportunity to be able to say that to you here in ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY magazine! February and March sees two big national events take place which I am helping to lead celebrations of locally. February is LGBT History Month, which aims to promote equality and diversity. It does this by increasing the visibility of LGBT people (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender), their/our history, lives and experiences in wider society. Here in Hinckley, at St Mary's Church in the town, at 5pm on Saturday, February 27th, we will have our second annual LGBT History Month reflection and reception. Many thanks to Reverend John Whittaker for his help and support in organising this important event with me. We have a number of great speakers who will share their stories as part of the reflection and reception. St Mary's gospel choir will also be performing. It is a free event and I hope to see you there... you don't have to be LGBT to attend. Meanwhile, from Monday February 29th, to Sunday, March 13th it is Fairtrade Fortnight. Here in Hinckley and Bosworth there is a host of events being held to celebrate this great occasion, including: On Monday, February 29th, at The George Ward Centre, at 3pm, I will be celebrating my ninth (real) birthday...yes, that's right, I was a Leap Year Baby...with a Fairtrade Birthday Party at The George Ward Centre in Barwell. On Tuesday, March 1st, Fairtrade Breakfast at Burbage Methodist Church. On Tuesday, March 8th, Wriggly Readers, 9.45 am, Hinckley Library. And on Sunday, March 13th, Fairtrade Breakfast at Hinckley United Reformed Church and a farmers' breakfast at St Catherine's Church, Burbage. (These events are subject to change.) Many thanks to my colleagues on the local Fairtrade Forum for putting all these events together. By buying products with the official Fairtrade label on them, we ensure the original farmers and growers in the Developing World get paid a fairer wage and get to live and work in better conditions. I hope you will join us at one or more of these events! Thanks for reading and see you next time! Mathew Hulbert is Youth Champion at The George Ward Centre and is a Member of the Hinckley and Bosworth Fairtrade Forum.

Each year Charity Link helps over 5,500 children and adults throughout the region who are experiencing poverty, hardship or crisis by providing items that the majority of us take for granted, such as a bed to sleep in, a cooker, and in emergencies, food. There are many ways to show your support for this local charity. Due to the unique way in which Charity Link works, for every £10 donated it can raise £50 from charitable trusts that are available to help those in need – meaning your support makes even more of a difference to the people who really need it. Advert on Page 15 We recently decided to have some work done to move our loft hatch. Mal & his colleague from More Than Loft Ladders called round and by suggesting a more appropriate ladder, saved us some money (always good) and did a sterling job. Very friendly and cleared everything away even vacuuming the carpets. Would highly recommend. Liz Brewer

ROUNDABOUT HINCKLEY During the months leading up to the St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival 2015 Debbie and I discussed having our first ever magazine to promote the festival. Debbie was so helpful right from the outset and assured us that we could produce a glossy, colour magazine at no cost to ourselves. Sounded too good to be true but that is exactly what happened. Debbie advised on layout, designs, distribution and handled all the final design, printing and delivery. Debbie gained advertisers to support the magazine along with those we had secured and was able to advise and support them on their adverts too. No request was ever met with anything other than a positive attitude and she made the whole experience a joy and took all the hard work out of it. Her attention to detail and taking on board last minute changes ensured we had a 20 page outstanding programme to deliver to local people. We were thrilled with the final product and the amazing professional service we received from Debbie throughout. Her generosity and skills contributed greatly to topping the number of visitors and money raised at St Mary’s Church Hinckley. We have no hesitation in working with Debbie again and recommending her to you. Catherine Hamilton, St. Mary’s Church, Hinckley
