St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival 2017

Reverend John Whittaker’s Message “Why do you pray Vicar?” is a question I have been recently asked. The answer could take days, but I sensed the enquirer was after something a bit briefer: ‘I pray because I love the life I have received, I love my family and my friends and I want to learn to love all my neighbours, my sisters and brothers the world over. I pray to ask God to help me love in that way. I pray because I love the world God has made and I want it to be a world in which God’s loving purposes come to fulfilment.’ The reason why I am able to answer in that way is because I believe that God, creator of the universe, has encountered the world and the world has encountered God through the life of Jesus Christ. This encounter we can know deep in our being through the loving and grace filled actions of the Holy Spirit. The birth of Jesus, the one in whom humanity encounters the fullness of God, is of cause at the heart of our celebration of Christmas. This Christmas Tree Festival is Hinckley’s way of both getting ready for the joys of Christmas as well as the celebration of our community, our love for one another and our desire for a world in which sisters and brothers the world over are united in the pursuit of love and peace. So thank you for the huge generosity of our sponsors, tree donors and festival makers. Thank you for coming and supporting this wonderful community event in Hinckley’s grandest ancient building. And as we rejoice in the creativity and generosity of the Hinckley community, let’s say a prayer to God, the one who knows us and invites us to know God; and when we do, let us discover peace, purpose, grace, love and hope. Today and always. Amen. God Bless.

John
