CHARITY GALA EVENING

2018

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS & AUCTION GUIDE

Josie with Land Girls Betty and Doris in Bamboozle’s production, Down to Earth

Welcome Thank you for joining us this evening at Bamboozle’s glittering Moulin Rouge Gala dinner and charity auction. Your contributions tonight raise vital funds so that we can continue our life-changing work with children and young people who have learning disabilities and their families. We hope you have a wonderful time. Many of the children we work with are unable to speak for themselves. They can’t express themselves in ways that most of us understand. But they do have things to say. What we want to do at Bamboozle is to unlock the doors to a world where they can find their own voice - a voice which is listened to with care and attention. Too often in our society, these children and their families are not heard; they are left out and made to feel that they don’t belong. We need to put that right. That is why we are all here this evening. With your help we can give a voice to more children and enable them to know that they, too, belong here. Thank you so much for your support - from everyone at Bamboozle.

The Bingley’s Story Presented by Ian Bingley, Olivia’s Dad. On the 10th of March 2007, Our daughter, Olivia Pearl Bingley was born after complications during the labour. She was starved of oxygen causing major damage to parts of her brain which has left her with the condition Cerebral Palsy. This condition affects the whole of her body, meaning that she struggles or is unable to do the things that we take for granted, like walking, talking, using her hands and even being able to eat and drink. We knew that Olivia had other complications, and in 2016, the day before her ninth birthday, she was further diagnosed as being on the Autistic Spectrum. Olivia’s autism is a developmental disability that affects how she communicates with and relates to other people, and how she experiences the world around her. Even with her disabilities, Olivia is a bright, intelligent and a funny little girl most of the time, but her inability to do the things she see’s people around her doing, can lead her to experiencing very high levels of anxiety and frustration leading to severe meltdowns. In order for her cope with this, she has tried to keep her world as small as possible by not wanting to go out of the house unless it is part of her normal weekly routine. This means that doing normal family activities like going for a walk, a trip to the cinema, swimming or even visiting friends can be a major trauma for her, which in turn can be stressful for us as parents too, except that is, for when it’s a day out with Bamboozle! To Olivia, Bamboozle means a safe day out, where she can be transported to a different world, where she can be inspired to let her imagination run away, a place where she can relax and be entertained by caring people that understand her and her needs without any judgement. It’s not often that Olivia is captivated by someone or something, however when Olivia goes to Bamboozle she looks and listens intently, giving her body time to relax from all of the unwanted movement that is caused by her condition. Quite simply, Olivia loves Bamboozle, and we do too.

Ian Bingley
