ROTHERHAM is on the right track to regeneration with the latest piece in the jigsaw of its transformation set to be laid over the next few months. Engineers will start work on an ambitious project to modernise the town’s railway station later this month. The station, which is used by half a million people a year, will remain open during the work. The revamp is the latest phase of the Rotherham Renaissance vision which is

aimed at transforming the town into an attractive destination. Although it is early days, there are signs that Rotherham is on the move, with funding coming into the town centre and plans to renovate the main market and shopping areas. The shopping centre is going through a challenging time, with competition from nearby Meadowhall and Rotherham’s own Parkgate Shopping. But there are significant signs of Yorkshire Forward’s Renaissance programme

starting to transform the town centre to achieve the aim of creating a place where people want to live, work and invest. The town centre is served by many restaurants, ranging from traditional English and European to authentic ethnic outlets Rotherham is home to five markets, including the Centenary Market, an outdoor market and the town centre market. The town centre is easy to reach by bus, train or car or, if you are driving, why not take advantage of the Free After 3 offer at borough council car parks and on-street parking, with the recently reopened Corporation Street car park bringing more spaces into use? Shoppers can also take advantage of the borough council’s latest initiative, charging 20p for a 30-minute stay instead of 40p for 20 minutes. Rotherham town centre has a wide range

of shops—from well-known multi-nationals to local businesses. Whatever you want to buy, you are more than likely to find it in Rotherham. The historic parish church overlooks the revamped All Saints’ Square, which is a popular place for shoppers or workers to either have a rest and watch the world go by or relax by having a bite to eat. And while you’re at it, there is a range of places to have a drink or buy something to eat, from sandwiches to sit-down meals, takeaways to pub grub. But if you don’t feel particularly hungry, the range of pubs also provide convivial places to meet friends for a drink. If you are looking to pamper yourself, why not visit one of the many hair and beauty salons? All in all, Rotherham is moving forward and well worth a visit—whether you go by car, bus or train.

On 22 February 2010 exciting work to redevelop Rotherham Central Railway Station will begin. The station will remain fully operational during the works. At present almost half a million people a year use the station. This is a critical component of the Rotherham Renaissance vision that aims to make the town a much more vibrant, successful and healthy place for people to live, work, visit and invest in. The project has only been made possible by funding from Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Contributions have also been obtained from a number of other sources including South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Network Rail and Northern Rail. Significantly improved facilities include:

• A new ticket office, passenger lounge, toilet facilities and retail kiosk. • New lifts and stairs providing better access for all passengers. • CCTV cameras and improved lighting to help passengers feel safer and more secure. • Improved passenger information. Work to construct a temporary station will begin on 22 February 2010. During this time the station will operate as normal. Once the temporary station is complete, the entrance will be at the bottom of Central Road. Passengers should be aware that Platform 2 will then only be accessible via a footbridge with steps. Further information on help for wheelchair users and passengers with reduced mobility to access alternative stations is available at the station or on the project website.
