A HORRIFIED courtroom has heard this week how two brothers aged ten and 11 subjected two young boys to a 90-minute torture ordeal. Ahead of today’s sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court the families of the two victims heard on Wednesday how the brothers, now aged 11 and 12, frog-marched their victims to Edlington’s remote Brick Ponds area before subjecting them to the sadistic attack. The disturbing account came after a report leaked to the BBC suggested that the incident should have been prevented through intervention by the authorities. The two brothers attacked their nine and 11-yearold victims with sticks and branches, a metal noose, lit cigarettes, a boulder weighing 28lb and broken bottles during the ordeal last April. They stripped them, forced them to perform sex acts on each other and told them they were going to die. It only ended when they left the scene and the younger of the two victims managed to stagger into nearby Edlington village for help. One of the boys was left close to death and the other seriously injured and deeply traumatised. The brothers later admitted robbery, grievous bodily harm and sexual offences. The two attackers were in foster care at the time and a serious case review report leaked this week said that that the incident could have been prevented. The report identifies multiple failings by nine different agencies and lists 31 missed opportunities where intervention with the attackers’ family was possible over 14 years. It spells out how the assault was not only predictable, but preventable by highlighting an inability to connect the boys’ worsening behaviour to their neglectful family background. No action was taken when, in 2006, aged eight, one of the two boys was excluded from school after threatening staff with a baseball bat or in 2007 after complaints of arson and the killing of ducks. A week before their brutal attack on the two Edlington youngsters, they beat and kicked a local choirboy. The brothers were due to be questioned about the attack by police on the very day they carried out the more serious offence.

This one’s for you, brother!
IT WAS a family affair for musicloving nine-year-old Leon Simpson O’Regan as he celebrated his birthday this week — his brother’s band provided the entertainment.
ROCK ON, BRO! Leon Simpson O’Regan – pictured on the drums – got a special birthday surprise when his brother’s band, Chinatown, turned up to play at his ninth birthday party. Pictured with him, from left, are band members Tom Hemmingway, Liam Simpson O’Reagan and Tom Blessed. 100216/18.
Leon’s brother Liam (15) is a member of an indie group called Chinatown, who showed off their skills at Leon’s birthday party on Monday. Liam and bandmates Tom Hemmingway and Tom Blessed took centre stage at Darfield’s Longbow pub. Leon’s proud dad, Ronald O’Regan, said: “The band has only been going since September, so I was pleasantly surprised how good they were. “Leon had a great time. He’s a big fan and is having guitar lessons. He wants to follow in his brother’s footsteps.” Ronald said Chinatown were building a reputation following a charity gig in Mexborough and more appearances are planned.

Flowers in tribute to ‘brilliant’ mum Sarah FLORAL tributes have been laid at the side of a country road for a “brilliant” mum who died after a collision with a taxi.
Sarah Watkinson (25), of Kendray, Barnsley, was in collision with the Toyota Avensis as she walked along Ludwell Hill towards High Melton at around 12.50am on Sunday. Police said that she had been walking before the accident with a 25-year-old man, who was arrested and released on police bail pending further enquiries. The driver, who was travelling along Ludwell Hill towards Barnburgh, was unhurt. Sarah’s father, Derek, said: “Sarah was a brilliant mum who thought the world of her kids. She always put them first and it’s a tragedy to think of them and others she has left behind. “On behalf of the family, I’d like to thank everyone for their kind words and messages of support. These have been a great comfort at this difficult time.” Police said that they had been pleased with the response from the public and several witnesses had come forward. They said that Ms Watkinson had been wearing a yellow top and the man had been wearing a red T-shirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact the South Yorkshire Police witness line on 0114 220 2970.

MONSTER MAGIC This is an easy magic trick where you show a spectator five cards, ask them to remember the position of one of them and then mark its position on the reverse with a paper clip.
Materials: Five old playing cards, glue and a paper clip, it helps to select five cards with one that
contrasts against the others, like a red queen in the middle of four black number cards.
Preparation: Glue the cards together as in the first picture making sure the contrasting card is in the middle.
Performing the trick: Show the spectator the cards and remember where the middle card is in this case the red queen. Turn the cards around and ask them to mark the queen with the paper clip. (Most spectators will clip the middle card). When you turn the cards around, the spectator will find that they haven’t clipped the queen at all. Just for fun, if you like, you can actually clip the queen to show the actual location on the back side of the cards.

Police officer faces death crash charge A POLICE officer involved in a crash in which a 49-year-old Dearne Valley man died is to be charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Pc David Allen (34), has been summonsed to appear before Leeds Magistrates’ Court on January 29 following an investiga-
Mr Hambrey, of Lime Tree Walk, Denaby Main, died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the collision. The IPCC investigated the incident and submitted a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service. The CPS has a determined that a second police officer who was a passenger in the vehicle will not face criminal charges.
tion by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. The charge relates to an incident in Denaby Main in March last year when the police patrol car being driven by Pc Allen collided with Ian Hambrey on Doncaster Road. Officers were on their way to an incident in Mexborough at 2.29am following reports of a male being unconscious.
Officers quash behead rumour RUMOURS of a beheading in Mexborough have been quashed by police who confirmed that the incident which triggered the hearsay was a sexual assault.
The rumour mill went into overdrive around the town after a large area of bushes on land across from Cowood Street, off Wath Road, was cordoned off by police. The rumours turned out to be false when police officers later confirmed that a 39year-old woman had been sexually assaulted. She suffered minor injuries. A 38-year-old man was arrested and bailed, pending further investigations. A police spokesman said: “We were alerted to an incident over the weekend around that area, but there were definitely not any headless bodies involved.”
Haiti help A COFFEE morning in aid of the Haiti appeal is being held next weekend. It takes place at Christ Church, Brampton Bierlow, on Saturday, January 30, from 10am to 1pm. There is no charge for entry. The event will include cakes and a raffle.

BUDDING chef Poppy Dickinson proved that she was top of the pops when she cooked up a storm in a youngsters’ culinary competition. Poppy, who is a Year 8 pupil at St Pius Catholic School, in Wath, competed in the Mexborough Rotary Club Young Chef Competition district final at North Hykeham, Lincoln, on Saturday after winning a heat at the end of last year. The 12-year-old was charged with cooking a healthy three-course meal for under £15.
She chose spicy parsnip soup, followed by roast sea bass with dressed salad and herby potatoes. Her tasty dessert was a white chocolate cheesecake. The youngsters, who had two hours after preparation time to create their meal, were judged on their healthy option, planning, organisational skills and hygiene, as well as presentation and tasting. Poppy, who lives in Thurnscoe, won the district final, scooping herself a trophy and certificate along with a personalised apron. She now goes on to the regional final to be held in Leicester in March. She will be guided by a chef who will act as her mentor for a month, helping the youngster to tweak her menu for the regional competition. Her mum, Jane, said: “Poppy’s always been keen on cooking, so when the competition came up at school, she thought she’d enter it. “Her dad, David, and I are both really proud of her.” Jane added that Poppy’s younger brother, sevenyear-old Toby, enjoyed sampling his sister’s cooking. And she said that the family was grateful to Philip Radcliffe and the Mexborough Rotary Club for organising the competition and for their continuing support.

‘Affordable homes will be just that’ FEARS that new council housing in Denaby would be “affordable housing which is not affordable” have been calmed by a councillor.
After a Government announcement that £1.3 million would be invested to provide 24 homes at Hesley Court, worries emerged at Doncaster Borough Council about borrowing to match-fund the project. And following strong concerns from some members, the council has voted to re-examine the scheme be-
fore committing to borrowing cash. But Cllr Chris Mills, ward member for Conisbrough and Denaby, said: “Councillors have asked for the report and figures to be looked at again. It may be that there are one or two amendments to put in there. “It’s important that local councillors, who are accountable to the residents of the borough, get the best possible value for money. So that is what’s happening. “Council housing and council housing income can be very complex, but because this is a new project, some of the rental income can be

used to pay for the borrowing. Like many other areas, there is a great need for this here. I’m sure that local residents will be very pleased to see development. “It is right in the middle of Denaby, in an area which has been waiting for some form of development for quite some time.” Don Valley MP Caroline Flint welcomed Housing Minister John Healey’s announcement of Government funding. She said: “As part of the scheme there will be new apprenticeships and local recruitment of workers, a wel-
come boost for Doncaster’s building industry, which has been hit hard during the recession. “The announcement is part of the biggest ever investment by any Government in affordable housing. “Thirteen years ago, most council properties did not have central heating or double glazing. Today’s homes are more modern and cheaper to heat, thanks to Labour. “However, local authorities need to have a coherent housing strategy which is about more than houses, it is about creating places where people want to live.”

member—at any time of year. Many places will have healthy choice of meals to help your waist as well as your wallet. There are plenty of welcoming pubs and bars
W ith the
and a wide choice of nightclubs are always bustling. There is also a host of restaurants to visit to suit all tastes. Take your pick from traditional English food, as well as Chinese,
Italian, Indian and, if you look around, even the more exotic. Whether you are heading out with mates, family or a loved one, there are so many places to choose from.
St Margaret’s Parish Church Swinton Will be holding a
CHARITY COFFEE MORNING in aid of Haiti This Saturday, January 23rd, from 10-11.30am in the church hall.
A really sunny and friendly vibe can warm the last phase of January for you. Expect lots of attention and for your popularity to be riding high. Yet despite this, cash and friendship don’t make very happy bedfellows, so you may be best to keep these two areas apart. Confidential advice given or taken can prove invaluable. Be open to this now. Call me for your financial forecast…
This is a week to relish. Not only will you feel more outgoing, you can also begin to feel like spending time with others. Romance is particularly well aspected, but you can’t sit back and wait for a fantasy admirer to hunt you down, you need to busy yourself with as many buzzy events as possible. A fairer share of domestic chores can lift an existing tie. Call me for your love scope…
Stay conscious that your reputation is your license to success. If you have trodden on an important person’s toes, the feedback can be felt now. Yet if you understand who holds the power in your relationships, this can be time when your star can be in the ascendant. Impressions really do count. Consider the impact you make and ask if it is good Taurus. Call me for your in-depth forecast…
The Quarter Moon in your opposite sign of Taurus, right angles the Sun. This gives you an opportunity to confront a painful emotional or family event, which has been causing some sadness. Have the courage to do this, for Venus is going to be very protective of you and will ensure that things can be sorted with less ill will than you may fear or suspect. Call now for more advice…
Your enthusiasm can be absolutely awesome this week, and faraway places and faces can truly enchant you. So an ideal time to book or plan a holiday. If you are on the move or go to see a show, band or exhibition, you can have a fabulous time. Just be conscious that one person could be rather jealous of your hot streak and may prove spiteful. Call now for more news and advice…
All forms of communications can see you do spectacularly well, so a great week to book a refresher course for computing skills or to start a website or personal blog. Yet, there are only so many hours in each day. So, do plan prudently what you want to do with yours. Don’t try to do too much. Concentrate your focus and you can be awesome Sagittarius. Call now for more advice…
Education can be a really important feature these days. And for many of us, there is a need to constantly update our skill set, especially as technology becomes more and more important. You and a friend can help each other, perhaps going on a course together or providing mutual encouragement. In love, things can spice up but also be mysterious! Call me for your love scope…
The stars put you in full-on temptation mode, and anything remotely luscious can be a real draw. This can also therefore, be a diet breaker, but just as easily you can find yourself daydreaming about a new, sizzling love interest. Yet however sultry they may be remember that after the initial glow has worn off, they’re likely to be fallible, just like us all. Call for your love scope in full…
Meet people in the middle and this can turn out to be a sparkling week. A spirit of compromise really can work wonders. And if you do make any agreements or get chatting to someone new, Saturn can anchor down the more frivolous side of Venus, and see these become lasting and satisfying bonds. Be sincere, and life will reward you handsomely Leo. Call now for more…
You can be a bit of a magnet, for all sorts of good things, as the Sun in Aquarius combines with Venus. With lucky Jupiter also angling well with the transformative Pluto, the hard work you have invested behind the scenes can start to pay off, and this can see an improvement in your income and self-esteem. Don’t let a doubter hold you back. Call me for your financial forecast in full…
Okay, the jobs market has been depressed, so I don’t say the following lightly, but this can be a week when things turn for you - if finding a job is your main goal. This may be a role where you can combine your powers of concentration and eye for detail with helping others. So service industry roles, retailing, health and caring, can all see you prosper. Call now for more advice…
Life is fluid. Situations, as well as friendships can come and go. But a blast from the past can cheer you this week, when an old friend gets in touch, out of the blue. This person may have changed quite a bit since you last spoke, and you can be pleased to reacquaint yourself with them. A great time to plan future and potentially life changing events. Call now for more news and advice…

Treat your home to a Advertisement feature WITH the long winter nights and gloomy days showing few signs of letting up, now is the perfect time to turn your attention to sprucing up your home. It might be a bit early for a spring clean but there’s no reason not to start thinking about what improvements you can make to your surroundings. Don’t forget, there are many ways to give it a fresh, brand-new look. Simply by decorating, you will give your home a new lease of life. You could paint, wallpaper, or in some rooms, such as the bathroom or kitchen, do a bit of tiling. Maybe the carpets are looking shabby. You could either give them a good clean by hiring a professional to do it, or even have a go yourself. If that fails and your budget allows, why not treat yourself to some new ones or, better still, think about swapping your carpet for wood flooring instead? Maybe your kitchen needs a revamp? If so,
there are many ways you can breathe new life into it. If your units look tired, you could buy new ones or give your present ones a new look by stripping them down and giving them a new coat of varnish or paint or, if you browse around DIY stores, find a wide variety of products to transform them. And don’t forget the windows. They might be in good condition so that a new blind or pair of curtains will do the trick—otherwise you might have to think about replacing them altogether. Other simple touches—even just a pair of new taps or light fittings, or perhaps a new piece of furniture—can make all the difference. Or why not tackle the bathroom by treating yourself to a new suite? Bedrooms are another area of the home that householders like to transform. If this is the case, why not have a look at some new wardrobes or fitted bedrooms? If the room isn’t very big, ask a specialist for help. They will find a way of making the most of every nook and cranny. Why not add a conservatory to your home too? This will give you more space—in fact it’s like adding an extra room—and will look attractive and probably add value to your property. But one thing is for sure, whatever you want to do there is a wealth of shops and professionals willing to help. Just look at these pages for places to visit.

Bulldogs mark return with points avalanche DEARNE Valley Bulldogs’ second string stepped back into the limelight with a 60-0 destruction of South Bradford. Duathletes rise to the challenge TOUGH duathletes braved the treacherous weather to participate in the first Team Manvers off-road Duathlon of 2010. On the morning of the event, the course at Manvers Waterfront Boat Club had to be re-routed due to the hazardous conditions underfoot caused by the weather. biker Steve Peat was watching the event and afterwards paid tribute to the courage shown by all who participated. He also presented event winner Andrew Hardman with his novelty award for finishing the course in a winning time of 58.39sec. Michael Goulding was second in 59.42sec.
