C osta c ou nc ils’ b onfire nig ht b eac h b an Town halls along the Costa Blanca have taken the decision to close access points to their beaches this evening (Wednesday) to prevent large crowds gathering to celebrate San Juan bonfire night. Elche’s councillor for beaches Ramón Abad stated that all the beaches in the Valencia region would be closed to stop parties taking place and to ‘contain the pandemic’. He noted that an operation had been prepared in his municipality involving 120 police officers.

He said that sun worshippers would be told to leave the beaches by 19.00 and they would remain closed until 09.00 on Thursday. The councillor noted that they would be using drones to watch over their nine kilometres of coast. Neighbouring Santa Pola council said their beaches would be shut from 19.00 until 10.00 to ‘guarantee social distancing and prevent new infections, for the good of all’. In Altea the council announced that their beaches will close from

A pre-Covid San Juan celebration 21.00 until 06.00 – and Albir’s will be shut at 20.00. Local police and Civil Protection will be out patrolling to ensure everyone abides by the rules, noted the councils. Benidorm announced that all three of its beaches will close as normal at 22.30.

Torrevieja town hall did not specifically say that the town’s beaches will close. Councillor for security Federico Alarcón said the town hall was asking people not to go to the beaches. He said there would be a heavy police presence and officers would ensure that crowds did not gather.

Cinema at Pedreguer vaccine centre Helping deal with vaccine nerves and alleviating boredom whilst waiting for the allclear to go home, a local film society in Pedreguer has set up a mini-cinema in the ‘jab room’. After being given their shot at the Rockodrome, members of the public are required to wait at least 15 minutes before leaving, to make sure they do not suffer any ill-effects. And thanks to Cineclub Pessic, they can spend that time with their feet up watching films. Spokesman for the club Josete Gayà says members have put together a compilation of four-and-a-half hours’

worth of footage, which continues on a reel throughout the day’s vaccinating – enough of it, in fact, that those going back for their second dose weeks later are unlikely to be watching the same videos twice. Short films, music videos, cartoons, fragments from popular silver-screen productions and other ‘very varied and diverse’ footage runs on a giant screen against a blackcurtained backdrop, giving the impression of a real-life cinema – although you have to bring your own popcorn. Sr Gayà said the move seems to be a huge hit among those being jabbed

On script in Benidorm By Irena Bodnarec Benidorm’s National Police chief Ceferino Serrano has been presented with the Command Staff and Script from the chief of the National Police of Valencia at a

special ceremony in the town hall square. Mayor Toni Pérez and councillors attended and witnessed this special act as well as serving officers in the force. The final words to the

force were to provide better services, protect citizens and visitors and to coordinate with other law enforcement and security forces to help recover tourist activity and make Benidorm a better and safer place for all.

Crane operator arrested in building site death incident By Shelley Liddell Guardia Civil officers arrested a 51-year-old male crane operator, in connection with the death of a 35-year-old worker last Monday in a building under construction located on El Campello’s Avenida Ausiàs March. Sources close to the inves-

tigation say that officers, after discovering the man did not fall from the eight floor as initially reported by emergency services, are now considering the theory that human error may have caused a load to fall and hit him. The incident occurred when the arrested man allegedly pressed the unload button on

the crane and the load it was carrying swayed and fell to the eighth floor, where the victim was working. The Guardia Civil charged the detainee with involuntary manslaughter due to workplace negligence. He was released after making a statement pending court proceedings.

When he became ‘very nervous’ they decided to search the car. They immediately noticed a ‘very large’ black plastic bag on the back seat and found eight more in the boot. Upon opening them the officers found that they were full of marijuana buds.

The spokesman noted that they had been dried and pressed and put into packs to prevent the strong distinctive smell from escaping. They also found that the man was carrying €2,834 in cash. A Torrevieja judge sent the suspect to jail on remand.

German drove to Spain ‘to buy drugs’ A German citizen who was transporting 23 kilos of marijuana buds in his car has been arrested by Guardia Civil in Torrevieja. According to a force spokesman, the 30-year-old man had travelled to Spain ‘specifically to buy the drugs’. The spokesman said that he was returning to Germany with the haul when he was stopped at a road block in the town. He noted that because the car had a German number plate it aroused suspicion and officers decided to speak to the driver.

Stolen car racket revealed An international gang, which allegedly stole vehicles then switched their identification details with similar models that had been in accidents, has been rounded up in a joint operation by Guardia Civil and National Police. The gang was led by Italian, French and Spanish citizens and had branches in various places around this country, according to a police spokesman. Officers searched 17 addresses in Alicante, Badajoz, Baleares, Córdoba, La Coruña and Valencia provinces, and arrested 10 people (four in Palma de Mallorca, one in Valencia, three in Córdoba and two in La Coruña). The owner of a car dealership and rental business in Villena was placed under investigation at the end of May in connection with the gang’s activities. The suspects are accused of illegal dealing in vehicles, money laundering, tax offences and belonging to a criminal organisation. The gang allegedly bought

cars that had been in accidents which were similar to those they had stolen, and swapped the number plates, chassis numbers and documentation. The stolen vehicles were then sold in Spain and in other countries, including Italy, France and Portugal. A warehouse in Palma de Mallorca contained a massive workshop with all the necessary tools to dismantle and alter the vehicles. Inside officers discovered 32 vehicles at various stages of assembly, as well as numerous engines and spare parts. The operation seized a total of 63 vehicles, many of them

high-end models, which are being analysed to determine if they were stolen. Officers also confiscated 45 pairs of number plates, a wealth of vehicle documentation from various countries (principally Germany and Italy), manipulated technical specifications cards and driving licences, equipment for stealing cars (radiofrequency detectors, devices for forcing locks, etc.), numerous computers, €14,800 in cash, a firearm and ammunition. The authorities also froze the accounts of 14 businesses used by the gang, along with nine homes, two warehouses and various financial products.

End to outdoor face masks People will no longer have to wear face masks in the open air from June 26. PM Pedro Sánchez announced that the measure will be approved in a Cabinet meeting tomorrow (Thursday).

“We will be able to enjoy life outdoors without a face mask,” said Sr Sánchez. All the details about the Thursday meeting will appear in Friday’s

advertising campaign to boost Pego’s local trade, warning that ‘if you don't use it, you lose it’. The campaign is titled El Futuro lo Compras Ahora, or ‘You're Buying the Future Now’, and presses the point that if

people do not buy locally, ‘shops will shut down and eventually stop existing’. According to the council, it wanted to create publicity that was striking, unusual, and would reach people's hearts.

UFO ‘hoax’ for local trade A flying saucer sighting over Pego was, indeed, fake news, reveals the local radio station which reported it. But listeners did not realise at the time, and some of them rushed to their windows to see if they could spot it. According to the newscast on Ràdio Pego, a space ship was clearly visible from above the town and, seconds later, touched down right in the centre. Witnesses, the station

claimed, saw how ‘just one person’ alighted – ‘a young girl, to be precise’. Whilst most would expect nobody believed it, the story reportedly went viral across Pego and even beyond, being passed from mobile phone to mobile phone – even when later bulletins claimed the girl who had disembarked was from the future. She introduced herself as Avenir, meaning ‘future’, and said she lived in Pego in the

year 2121, and had come back a century in time to go shopping and visit the bars and restaurants. The Pego of 100 years from now has neither, because they all closed down as everyone did their shopping at big stores or online. Naturally, and despite the authentic-looking video montage Ràdio Pego produced, the UFO tale had a perfectly realistic explanation. It was all part of an unusual

Residents must recycle more ''Forget tolls and focus

A campaign to raise awareness about the importance of recycling plastic waste has been launched by Orihuela town hall. It was presented by councillor for the environment Dámaso Aparicio by the River Segura behind Ociopia commercial centre, where a barrier to catch floating debris has been installed across the water. He noted that a large quantity of plastic had been collected from there the previous night but it was already dirty the following morning. “We have a beautiful river in the Segura so we want to stop the plastics that constantly come in from upriver,” he said. “It can be seen that most of this is for domestic use, not at all what people think that it comes from farmers.” A Miguel Hernández university study found that more than 90% of plastic containers in the River Segura are of types usually for domestic use by the public. The street cleaning department is working with the Segura river and water authority (CHS), regional government, water courts and schools. A campaign against plastic waste was started by Hurchillo primary

school and involved 124 other schools with more than 8,000 pupils. Between 2009 and 2020, the amount of plastic containers recycled in the municipality increased by 500% from 151 tonnes to 771. However the average amount recycled per resident of the municipality is 7.8kg, compared to the regional average of 8.8kg. Sr Aparicio said the town hall has made a big effort by adding more containers and trucks to collect separated waste, and putting on awareness campaigns, ‘but the rest is down to us members of the public’. The campaign will be extended to Orihuela Costa over the summer with nautical activity clubs and associations to prevent plastics from ending up in the sea.

on the train'' By Samantha Kett

A united front from political parties across the Marina Alta is hoping to back Spain’s transport minister into a corner and commit him to funding the Gandia-Oliva-Denia train. So far, 18 towns and villages, and 12 parties, have passed motions at their last council meetings agreeing to tell José Luis Ábalos to forget about any future motorway tolls and focus on railway lines. Sr Ábalos is considering reinstating tolls on motorways throughout Spain to fund their upkeep, but says he will not do so without the agreement of all local authorities affected. With 18 towns and their entire local governments voting against paying to use the motorway, it will make it clear to the minister that he will not obtain this agreement. Another reason for the controversial toll proposals is to penalise long-distance driving, to cut air pollution and reduce the speed of climate change. And Marina Alta councils say this plays right into their hands when they campaign for the train line, ‘as with a decent cross-regional transport link, long-distance driving will be less necessary’.

Arranging a funeral abroad can be overwhelming. But with us by your side, you can simply get on with enjoying every day in the sun.

Eight towns have already cast this unanimous vote – Denia, Jávea, Pego, El Verger and Benidoleig, all led by the Socialists party (PSOE); Gata and Pedreguer, run by Compromís, a Valencia-wide party in coalition with the regional socialist government; and Teulada-Moraira, governed by the Partido Popular (PP). Centre-right Ciudadanos (C’s) and local independent outfits CUP, Gent de Dénia, Ciutadans per Pego, Ciudadanos por Jávea and Teulada's RED, have given their supporting votes. Another 10 towns are set to debate the motion and are likely to vote in favour – Orba, Jalón, El Ràfol d'Almúnia, La Vall de Laguar and Senija (Compromís), Ondara and Els Poblets (PSOE-Compromis), and Calpe and Benissa (PP) – and it is expected that the independent parties Defendamos Calpe, PIREE in Els Poblets, and Reiniciem and CIBE in Benissa will support the move. Local councils have agreed that the last time all parties and towns voted in one direction was around seven years ago when they opposed the oil-drilling plans for the Gulf of Valencia.

Beware the cherry pickers... Successful investing is not about cherry-picking the latest high-flying fund (there are plenty of examples where these turn out to be over-ripe and over-valued). Instead it is critical to ensure that your adviser matches your investment portfolio to your personal appetite for risk and overall financial planning objectives. Confirm that they are personally qualified to advise on both the investment and financial planning elements of their recommendations. At Blevins Franks, our first steps are to thoroughly assess your risk tolerance and characteristics using a combination of psychometric questions and other methodologies, and to understand your needs in term of income, future capital requirements and estate planning.

Vall del Pop U3A – Ladies at Lunch Nature and history collide in Guardamar A new campaign launched by Guardamar del Segura town hall emphasises the municipality’s unique combination of natural and historical heritage. Its curtain of sand dunes stretches along the length of its 11 kilometre coastline, which boasts golden sandy beaches of great ecological value, with three Blue Flags for Playas Centre, Roqueta and Montcaio, noted the town hall. Also of interest is the pine forest, or Alfonso XIII park, covering 800 hectares and originating from efforts to fix moving dunes by planting various species of vegetation, added a council spokesman. “Proud of its roots, traditions and fiestas, Guardamar is a welcoming town in a privileged location at the mouth of the River Segura with history that can be traced back for millennia,” he said.

Phoenicians, Iberians, Romans and Moors, amongst others, have left their legacies over time, including the archaeological sites of the Phoenician port town of La Fonteta (8th-6th century BC) and the Moorish Ribat (10th-11th century AD), which will open for guided tours this summer. The most visible cultural landmark is the old walled town and castle, which were inhabited from 1271, making this year the 750th anniversary of its foundation. To mark the occasion, various commemorative activities have been planned, including a festival of music, dance and theatre to be held in the castle in the first half of August, and a magnificent audiovisual exhibition, which can be visited at the Casa de Cultura until after the summer.

On Tuesday, June 15, a total of 24 of the lady members of the Vall del Pop U3A met at the Shack, Jalón for the second Ladies at Lunch event. They were lucky with the weather and sat in sunshine for a delightful three course luncheon, with soft drinks and wine. The event gave them an opportunity for a couple of hours spent chatting, eating and drinking – exchanging plans for the U3A summer

recess and looking forward hopefully to the resumption of normal U3A meetings from September. The next Ladies at Lunch will be on Tuesday, September 21, so keep your eye on the website for further details of the venue and other events. Salutes and farewells The Aircrew Association held a unique, four element, function on June 16 at La Cumbre restaurant, Benitachell. The occasion included the presentation of the award of Chevalier de L’Ordre National De La legion D’Honneur to John Russell, the association’s most ‘mature’ member; the farewell to its president of five years, Henry Horth; the ‘entertaining’ of the association’s ladies, and the appointment of the new president, Tom Brown. John Russell was presented with his award on the terrace of La Cumbre by the assistant defence attaché from the French Embassy in Madrid, captain Xavier De Cervoisier. members of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), North Costa Blanca Branch were also present, led by their chairman, wing commander Bob Hunt MBE. John is also a member of RAFA! Prior to ‘pinning’ the award, captain De Cervoisier made an impressive speech in English in which he highlighted the many operational sorties and other activities in which John had participated during World War II, thus contributing to the liberation of France. John’s award was richly deserved and the applause from the spectators following the presentation reflected how popular and much appreciated the award had been. Next, the chairman, Max Maxwell, introduced the proceedings by proposing the toast ‘to the association’s newest Chevalier De L’Ordre National De La Legion D’Honneur, John Russell’. The chairman then welcomed everyone present including the association’s

guests: Henry Horth and John Russell, the RAFA members, captain Xavier De Cervoisier, wing commander ‘Phelpsy’ Phelps (a serving RAF officer from the CAOC at Torrejon who became a member of the association during his welcome!), Henry Horth’s daughter and son, Ann and Paul and the association’s honorary chaplain, Father Marcus Ronchetti. Then followed an appropriate prayer for John Russell and the grace from Father Marcus. After a ‘dedication to the comradeship of aircrew’ from Father Marcus, Peter Langley, vice life-president of the association proposed the toast ‘to the ladies’, Max Maxwell bade farewell to the departing president, Henry Horth and also proposed the toast to ‘our president Henry’ which was followed by the formal handover of the president’s badge of office to new president Tom Brown. More toasts were proposed, first to Spain's King Felipe, then to squadron leader David Tucker, to the president of the Republic of France (in French), and John Russell, appropriately, proposed the toast to ‘the Queen’. The chairman gave thanks to all who had contributed to the obvious success of the function, and proceedings were closed with the aircrew toast ‘to absent friends and fellow aircrew’, proposed by the newly appointed president Tom Brown. This was a special occasion with a mixture of joy, and sadness. Another memorable day in the diary of the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca.

Happy 60th wedding anniversary Happy anniversary on June 24 to Peter and Shirley Bambridge. Sending love from all your family and friends, hoping soon we can get together again for not only a celebration but a big hug too. We miss you x

Pandemic Investing – How It Can Work For You. The pandemic has overhauled the lives of most households over the past year. The changing way we live has come to the fore during the coronavirus pandemic, as much of the world has had to adapt to social distancing and national lockdowns. This has sped up the adoption of technology, with work moving online, lockdown restrictions making people more reliant on streaming services to stay entertained, and internet shopping for their deliveries. There are plenty of technology stocks that have benefited from this theme. Beyond the pandemic, investors could consider technological, scientific and medical advances

or themes such as climate change or shifting social and economic demographics. Investing in trends means you can invest in the future and understand where your money is going. However, diversification is the key word for any portfolio. This means parts of your portfolio can perform well even if others slump and should smooth out any losses over the long-term. Searching company financial and performance data to choose the top stocks for your investment portfolio can be baffling and time-consuming. If all this seems rather daunting and you are looking for better returns on your savings, but

triple your chances of developing skin cancer, according to Cancer Research UK, so take extra care to cover up with sunscreen, hats and clothing. “Sunburn occurs when UV radiation from the sun damages epidermal skin’s DNA and leads to cell death,” says Dr Susan Mayou, consultant dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic (cadoganclinic.com). “At a cellular level, sunburn is associated with microscopic changes in the skin and inflammation.” You usually know if you’ve got sunburn – because your skin will be red and sore! Symptoms can also include swelling, tenderness and irritation, skin feeling hot to touch and, in severe cases, blistering and fever or chills. Mayou adds: “Severe cases of sunburn may result in second-degree burns, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, secondary infection and shock.”

The best way to approach sunburn? Avoid getting it by taking all necessary sun safety measures. If it does happen, Mayou suggests: “Take a cool shower and

apply a cold compress to the affected area for immediate relief.” Keep the skin hydrated with moisturiser too: “Aloe vera has been proven to have excellent soothing properties and is anti-inflammatory, so very effective in calming the effects of sunburn.” 4. Allergies If you have hay fever, your allergies will be worse when the pollen count is high, so

try to plan ahead. “It’s also advisable to avoid grassy areas, particularly in the early morning, evening or night, when the pollen count is highest,” says LloydsPharmacy pharmacist Anshu Kaura (lloydspharmacy.com). “When it comes to treating allergies, you can opt for a targeted treatment, which can help relieve common symptoms, including itchy, watery eyes, such as LloydsPharmacy’s Fusion Allergy Eye Spray (£11.99),” she notes. “If you experience a number of symptoms, an antihistamine tablet may be the best course of action. These stop the action of histamine, which is released during inflammatory process and causes the onset of symptoms.” 5. Food poisoning Rates of food poisoning increase in summer, because bacteria grow faster in warmer weather and foods can quickly spoil. Plus, it’s easy to undercook meats on the barbecue (especially after you’ve already had a couple of beers in the sun!). “Food poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhoea or a combination of the two,” says GP Dr Rachel Ward (@drrachelwardgp). The most important management of food poisoning is remaining well hydrated. “As you lose water, salt and sugars with diarrhoea and vomiting, rehydration sachets are an ideal way of replacing what you have lost. They’re usually available from your pharmacist,” says Ward. If you have underlying

medical problems, such as diabetes or heart disease, Ward says you may need to take extra considerations with some medications, so check with your GP. Though most cases of food poisoning are mild and pass in a few days, it

can sometimes be more serious. As Ward stresses: “If you experience fever, blood in your stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain or if you are unable to keep fluids down, then call 111 or speak to your GP for advice.”

Dr. Vicente Mera, internal specialist at Clinica Britannia answers your questions Sudden death syndrome I am really concerned about my husband after seeing the Danish footballer collapse on the football pitch. He plays football three times a week and often feels dizzy with a shortness of breath midgame. What should we do? Before taking on any exercise it is always advised to have a thorough checkup with your GP. But if he is suffering with dizziness and breathlessness, then he should consult with a cardiologist. Firstly, a simple ECG can be taken to check the electrical activity of the heart, and if needed a Holter-ECG can be applied. This device will continuously test and record his heart rate and rhythm over a 24-hour period. An echocardiography can

Dr Vicente Mera also be used to determine if certain regions of his heart muscles are not receiving enough oxygen-rich blood. It uses an ultrasound to give a moving image of the heart, providing information about the shape, size, function, strength, movement and thickness of its walls and the functioning of its valves. Please make an appointment with his GP who assess him and organise an appointment with a cardiologist if

necessary. Many sports people feel healthy and do not know they have any underlying heart problems or defects until it is too late.

Bladder problems Can’t pass a loo without taking the opportunity to nip in?! You may have overactive bladder syndrome Overactive bladder syndrome is also known as an irritable bladder or detrusor instability (the detrusor being the bladder muscle). Symptoms include: ■ Passing urine frequently ie more than seven times per a day. Some sufferers need to pass urine much more than this! ■ Being unable to hold urine in for very long. You need to go, and you need to go NOW! ■ Not making it to the loo in time. And ending up with a damp undercarriage! ■ Getting up to pee more

than once a night These symptoms may also be caused by other illnesses or by a simple urine infection but when these have been ruled out and no cause can be found, overactive bladder syndrome may be diagnosed. The cause of this problem is not known but sufferers have a faulty message system between the brain and the bladder! In a normal situation, the bladder fills with urine and when it needs to be emptied a message is sent to the brain to tell us to find a loo soon. We have plenty of time to find a convenience get comfortably seated, the bladder muscle contracts and urine is expelled. Not so with

overactive bladder syndrome! Faulty signals cause the bladder to contract suddenly and in an erratic fashion even when there is very little urine in the bladder. The problem is much more common than you might think, probably due to the fact that people feel embarrassed about bladder problems and many don’t even like to talk to their doctor about it. Studies have found that as many as 1-6 people are affected and the good news is that there is a lot that can be done to cure the problem!

48

Overactive bladder syndrome can cause terrible embarrassment and curtail your normal activities and thus enjoyment of life.

If you are having problems with your bladder find an understanding doctor or nurse to have a chat with. It could well change your life.

Across the Pond: Potato salad By Gordon Grindstaff

Every year since I can remember, I look forward to the middle of May, a time when I can safely put my tomato and pepper plants in the ground without having to worry about a frost or freeze that would kill them. (1) It's also the time of year when the farmer’s market down the road opens their doors; in the beginning, the produce is real expensive but you have to remember, it’s coming all the way from South Florida and someone has to go all the way down there to pick it up and bring it here. But as the days go by, fresh produce gets cheaper as it follows the sun; first from North Florida, then marching on through South Georgia, North Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and if the weather cooperates, we can be eating Indiana corn on the cob by the fourth of July. I was not intending to bring this up when I sat down to write this morning but I couldn’t help it; it is such a marvel to me that you can count on this annual migration of fresh produce, as it were, to happen like clockwork. Originally, I was just going to tell you that the day the market

opened; I bought my first Florida tomato and two ears of corn and paid dearly for the privilege. When I brought that tomato home, I wasn’t going to waste it willy-nilly on a salad. Half that baby was going to top a couple of grilled cheeseburgers fresh off my sparkling clean grill and the other half would later become the ‘T’ in a couple of BLT’s for breakfast. (2) In mid-afternoon, I began my preparation for what is one of my favourite summer meals; cheeseburgers on the grill, corn on the cob and my special recipe baked potato wedges. My plan was to have it ready by 4 o’clock or so; I can’t eat that much food any later than that. (3) As the afternoon wore on, I was rushing around, flipping the burgers and turning the corn on the cob on the grill outside while simultaneously watching for my special recipe potato wedges to get golden brown in the oven inside the house. I wanted all three things hot and ready at the same time. It didn’t work; some things got done before others, the burgers were overcooked and besides, I was too tired from running around to eat much

anyway. It dawned on me that something had happened to my body over the winter. My advancing age had slowed my reflexes; combining that with my sore knees, my aching back and on top of that, not having Susie’s hands available to help, meant that my multitasking days are over. I knew I had to simplify things for the next time. I needed to have some already prepared dishes available; potato salad for instance; that had worked well with the grilled Rueben sandwiches I had fixed earlier this spring. I wasn’t ready to make my own but I could buy it from the store. When I went shopping, I noticed that a three pound carton of mustard potato salad only cost a little more than the one pound version. Why don’t I just buy that three pounds and save us a little money, I reasoned. But the thought of having to eat three pounds of potato salad before it went bad almost made me ill. Go bad, you say? Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to eat potato salad when it’s hot outside? I liked potato salad but not that much. Still, I could save some money. Long story short,

thriftiness won the day. I bought the three pounds and froze two pounds of the stuff. I know. I know. You’re not supposed to freeze potato salad, especially when there’s mayonnaise involved. It says ‘do not freeze’ right on the jar. But I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck, you know. I went to the internet where a website called ‘Northern Nester’ assured me I could freeze potato salad if I was real careful about thawing it. Fair enough. If it’s on the Internet, it must be true, I always say. I should probably mention that another website called ‘Southern living’ told me to not even try but I had to do something with all that potato salad. Well, another long story short - you cannot freeze potato salad. When I thawed a pound of it and took the lid off the container, what was inside looked like I had taken my ladle, driven the 792 miles to the Okefenokee swamp and dipped up a bowl of the stuff floating in the swamp water. Two pounds of potato salad went into the trash. I should have listened to the Southerners. G2 notes: 1. I know. It’s not as simple as that. Even mid-May is still a gamble. Lengthy periods of rain in late May can and have caused my plants to rot some

years. The latest recorded frost in central Indiana was also on May 27 of 1961 when I was 21 years old. Tomato plants were the last thing on my mind back then; that would come much later when my testosterone levels dropped to middle-age numbers. 2. That’s a bald-faced lie. The grill was not freshly cleaned. It still isn’t. I’ve been intending to clean it up since last fall when I put it away for the winter but I just haven’t gotten around to it. I’ll get to it eventually. I promise. In the meantime, I will continue to pray that we don’t get ptomaine poisoning. 3. Eating late causes all kinds of havoc; it’s an old people problem so I won’t get into any details. If you’re old, you already know what I’m talking about; if you’re not, you’ll find out soon enough.

For those animal shelters that would like to send in details and photos of animals needing homes please email editor@weeklypost.es in the same way they used to with a SHORT piece of text and contact detailss. Deadline Mondays 13.00.

Grow your own lettuce mix By Hannah Stephenson, PA If you’re always throwing away bagged salad, try growing your own lettuce mix. Charity Garden Organic offers tips to help you grow salad leaves of your own. We bin so much bagged salad every year, it’s surely time to think again. Some figures suggest we chuck out 40% of the fresh lettuce and leafy greens we buy every year, making salads among the most wasted foods. Shoppers don’t always buy bagged salads with a specific meal in mind, meaning parts of, or even whole bags are often thrown away untouched. Yet it’s so easy to grow your own, insists charity Garden Organic (gardenorganic.org.uk), which promotes organic horticulture. Growing your own mixed organic salad requires minimal space, with most varieties suitable for growing on a window ledge, says the charity’s growing expert Dr Anton Rosenfeld. It’s also quick, with shoots revealing themselves in days, ready to be harvested in less than a month. “Britons buy a huge amount of bagged salad each week, and so much ends up straight in the bin,” says Rosenfeld. “However, it couldn’t be simpler to grow your own – you don’t even need a garden. With a bit of planning and a sunny windowsill, you can keep yourselves in a variety of salad leaves all year round.” Bestselling bagged salads include lettuce, rocket, spinach and pea shoots, but you can mix and match to suit your particular tastes.

Follow Rosenfeld’s top tips for growing your own stress-free salads… Do your prep Prepare your veg patch (or a tray on a window sill) by weeding, raking and levelling the soil to a fine tilth and gently firming it down. Lightly water the area so you’re just moistening the

soil. You don’t want to compact it. Grow your favourite leaves Pea shoots These are ideal for beginners, easy to grow and delicious. Simply buy a bag of dried marrowfat peas from the supermarket and soak a handful overnight. Then sow them 1-2cm deep, a few cen-

timetres apart. You’ll see results in days and within two weeks you can snip the shoots to harvest. If you keep the soil moist, you can get up to three harvests from each shoot. Rocket With its peppery flavour, rocket livens up any salad. Sow from March until late August or early September (depending on where you live). Sow seed 0.5cm deep in pots or rows, then thin to 15cm apart. You can start to enjoy them when the plants are 10-15cm tall and regular cutting is advised to encourage new growth of young, fresh leaves. Spinach This is not only delicious but is also a great source of essential vitamins. It can be sown in the spring to late summer. Sow 1cm deep in pots or rows and when the seedlings are big enough to handle, thin them to 15-30cm

apart. You can cut individual leaves as needed or you can cut seedlings and mature plants to 2.5cm above the surface as the plants regrow. Lettuce This is the key ingredient of all mixed salads and there is an abundance of different varieties to choose from including the pretty Lollo Rosso, with its frilly deep copper red leaves, or the ‘cut-and-come-again’ mixed leaf varieties. You can either buy your favourite or purchase a packet of mixed seeds. Lettuce can be sown directly into the ground from when the risk of frost has passed, right through until the autumn. Some varieties are prone to bolting, or running to seed in the hot dry summer months, so just check the details on the packet before you sow. And in winter? Don’t worry about the colder

months as you can simply switch to growing your leaves on a windowsill. Mixed lettuce leaves, for instance, will grow all year round indoors. When to harvest When young leaves are big enough to eat, use scissors to harvest just the amount

you need for your salad or garnish. Start with the outer leaves, making a clean cut. The stems will grow new leaves, hence the name ‘cutand-come-again’. As the plants mature you might notice the leaves taste bitter or attempt to flower, especially in hot dry weather. If so, it’s time to remove them.

Top tips A good, consistent watering habit is key. Ideally little and often. Slugs could be an issue if you’re growing outdoors. Avoid non-organic slug pellets as these are poisonous to hedgehogs, birds and other wildlife that might visit your garden.

Check the UV Protection of your sunglasses for National Sunglasses Day Article supplied by Specsavers Ópticas June 27 is National Sunglasses Day, an awareness day to celebrate and share the importance of wearing UV protective eye wear to protect your vision. To support this cause, Specsavers Ópticas are offering a free UV checking service in store to allow residents to check the protection that their sunglasses are giving their eyes. Francisco Jurado, Director of Specsavers Ópticas in Torrevieja explains, “UV rays can damage our vision as well as our skin. Prolonged UV exposure has been linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, and even some types of eye cancer. Sunglasses are not just fashion accessories, so it’s particularly important that you wear a good pair that

offer high levels of UV protection. Unfortunately, not all sunglasses provide sufficient protection from damaging UV rays,

so make sure your sunglasses conform with agreed safety standards. Look out for CE (European Community Standard), BSEN1836 (British Stan-

dard) or UV400 markings and aim for a pair that offer 80 percent light reduction. Wearing sunglasses that do not meet the European industry

standard protection of UV380 rating, especially those with dark lenses, is more damaging to the eyes than not wearing any at all. Dark lenses make the pupil dilate and let in more harmful rays than if you weren’t wearing them, because without the glasses the eyes would naturally squint to keep the rays out. This is why we’re offering UV protection checks in store, to make sure your eyes are properly protected from the sun this summer.” There are five Specsavers Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca offering the UV check service, in Jávea, Calpe, Benidorm, Guardamar and Torrevieja. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.
