Fac e m ask s in p u b lic m ade ob lig atory By Dave Jones Councillor for health Ana Barceló announced on Saturday that face masks have to be worn at all times in public in the Valencia region (provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón) – with some exceptions. The news comes as Sra Barceló reported a spike in cases in Valencia region on Monday.
The regional health authority reported 171 new coronavirus cases since Friday. A total of 17 of them are in Castellón province, 44 in Alicante province and 104 in Valencia province, with six cases ‘that have not yet been assigned’. This means that there are 442 'active cases' in the region, according to the figures – up from the 299 reported last Wednesday.
One person has died from the virus since the last update on Friday – four people are currently being treated in intensive care (up by two). Explaining the new regulations, Sra Barceló stated that a face mask is not needed for beaches, public swimming pools as well as 'countryside areas outside of town centres' when a distance of 1.5 metres can be maintained from other people

– or during physical exercise and 'any other activity which is not compatible with its use'. However, a face mask will have to be worn 'at all times in the street' and in public areas. They will also have to be used correctly, covering the nose and mouth. Bars will be able to use their outside tables at 100%
under the new measures, she added, with 1.5 metres between tables. However, people will have to wear a mask 'when they are not consuming', she noted. Full report on the latest measures and updates in Friday’s Costa Blanca News.

Fake news videos By Irena Bodnarec As if businessess in Benidorm weren’t struggling enough already, a YouTube video has been circulating over the last few days stating that Benidorm is in lockdown again! ‘Alex Belfield – The Voice of Reason’ a radio DJ for Celebrity Radio has a reputation of being controversial to get likes, followers and to provoke reaction – which he has certainly managed to do. The result has been holidaymakers due to fly out to Benidorm are now panicking and local businesses are incensed at the total lies he has managed to upload. Many have reported the video in an attempt to get it taken down
and cannot understand someone’s motivation behind it. Two of the statements he makes are “You’re not going to have fun” and “Looks like Benidorm is a no go”. Des Bellamy-Wright said “Some people do anything for the publicity and attention”, while Benidorm singer and entertainer Sean Mac remarked “I just watched the video and honestly it drives me nuts how much he is trying so hard to get people to be put off…. It’s even in his eyes – I’m so angry”. With the new regulations just introduced over the weekend on wearing masks, many are now hesitant and video’s like this are certainly not helping the tourism industry here.
ARRESTS MADE OVER MASS BRAWL By Dave Jones
A total of seven people face charges over their involvement in a mass brawl in Santa Pola town centre on Monday, July 13, reported the Guardia Civil. Long wooden poles, metal bars and an electric stun gun were used, alarmed witnesses told the authorities. Guardia Civil and local police officers intervened at about 7pm, but one of the groups involved had already gone. The other group was still there because the fight had broken out in their house, explained a Guardia Civil spokesman. Officers took their names and then set about trying to work out to what extent they had participated. The weapons were discovered underneath vehicles
in the street, where the assailants had thrown them when they heard the sirens approaching. Videos of the brawl had been shared on social networks, causing consternation among the local population. Careful analysis of these images enabled officers to identify all the participants, as well as the owner of a vehicle that had been damaged. The next day, three people were arrested including a 17-year-old boy, and the remaining four suspects were
detained on July 15. They included the person who had been carrying the stun gun, which had been fired but did not hit anyone, noted the spokesman. The suspects are six men and one woman, all Spanish and aged between 17 and 45. They face charges of affray, possession of prohibited weapons and causing injuries, and were released once they had made statements at the Guardia Civil station in the presence of a lawyer.

A total of five young pickpockets have been arrested in San Javier following a robbery wave of smartphones in seaside pubs, discos and car parks. According to the Guardia Civil, the pickpockets mainly targeted young tourists and luxury smartphones. The officers tracked the GPS location of the stolen smartphones with the support of the phone companies to recover them and identify the pickpockets. A total of seven smartphones were recovered and returned to their owners.

Anger on the beach By Irena Bodnarec The beach reservation system went live last Friday on Benidorm´s Levante beach and it has already caused
much annoyance and frustration by users. Access to the Levante beach is now only possible if you have booked a time slot – morning, afternoon or cur-
Angry beachgoers have to wait (above) while seeing many vacant plots and empty sunbeds (below) rently, all day is also available. Reservation can be made online or via the app but for those with no WiFi or mobile access, then physically at one of three points along the beachfront. Complaints quickly began from disgruntled holidaymakers, complaining that they had to wait in long queues wearing face masks in 28 degree heat with no shade.
Boy among injured in crash A collision between two cars in Guardamar del Segura injured four people on Thursday evening, reported the emergency services.
The crash happened at about 7.30pm on the CV-91 road, where three ambulances were sent to assist the occupants.
They treated a 44-year-old woman, a man, 43, and a boy, 11, for bruising, as well as a woman, 37, for multiple injuries.
What added to their frustrations was that the beach was half empty, with numerous empty plots. It is only possible to book one day in advance, so a holidaymaker would be required to queue up each day. Whilst the free plots were allegedly near to full capacity according to the town hall the previous weekend, hence the introduction of the booking system to avoid over-
crowding, the paying sunbed zones were sparsely occupied, causing further criticism that the ratio needs to be readdressed. Lengthy queues also formed at the entrances onto the beach, as each ticket has to be scanned. Neither of Benidorm´s other two beaches - Poniente or La Cala need to be pre-booked, nor in neighbouring Finestrat, Villajoyosa or Albir.

MASS DESTRUCTION By Samantha Kett Guardia Civill forces in Spain destroyed a total of 86,566 illegal weapons last year alone as part of the United Nations' gun clampdown programme. Of these, 62,000 were firearms. Overall, 6,269 were destroyed in the province of Alicante, including guns of all types and other weapons that do not use ammunition. The UN's international conference 19 years ago this
month on illegal arms trading led to a change in laws in several nations, including Spain. During it, concerns were raised globally about the manufacture, trafficking and circulation of small and lightweight weapons, their excessive accumulation and uncontrolled presence in many countries, the humanitarian, social and economic costs of this situation and its threat to maintaining and restoring peace, reconciliation,
safety, stability and sustainable development. After the conference, the UN declared July 9 as International Firearms Destruction Day. Legal possession of firearms or explosives, in Spain, falls within the Guardia Civil's jurisdiction, and is subject to the holder not having a criminal record, and passing practical and theory tests to obtain a licence. Once the holder no longer has a valid licence to use
Medical waste dumped in street Several bin bags full of clinical waste that had been dumped in the street in Elche have been traced by the local police to a nearby beauty centre. Inspectors from the municipal cleaning service made the discovery, finding syringes, gauzes and bloodstained materials inside. This is classified as a very serious violation of the bylaw, which establishes a specific procedure for disposal of clinical waste, and could result in a fine of up to €3,000.
Coordination between the local police and the cleaning service in Elche resulted in over 50 violations being re-
ported during the first half of this year, mostly related to dumping of plant cuttings, building waste and furniture.

them, they must be destroyed or deactivated. Since 2011, this process means breaking every single part of a weapon so it can no longer be used and no repair attempt will restore its purpose. Arms seized during crimecracking operations or confiscated from owners without a licence meet the same fate. After they are taken apart, the guns are then treated as scrap metal - melted down and recycled.
Prison for suspected people traffickers Two suspected people traffickers have been arrested and sent to prison by the National Police. The suspects are two Algerian men, who smuggled illegal immigrants in dinghies from Algeria into Murcia region. The men were experienced skippers and were hired by different human trafficking gangs to organise the trips and pilot the
boats. During the trip they would brag about all the people they had smuggled and warned the migrants to say nothing if the sea patrols or the police intercepted them. The traffickers had been investigated by the police, who had collected enough evidence to ask a judge to send them to prison on remand.
Boom for life on the road Sales and rentals of motorhomes are rocketing across Spain as people take to the road for ‘get away from it all’ holidays. ‘Glamping’ gives the opportunity to enjoy a vacation while avoiding the crowds at traditional destinations - and the chance of exploring the lesser known corners of the country. The Covid-19 emergency lockdown hit sales of camper-
vans - mirroring the fall in car sales and the tourism industry - but according to the Spanish media demand has ‘bounced back’. Over June there was an increase of 20% in sales of motorhomes over a year ago, which represents 1,208 new vehicles on the road across the month. The Costa Blanca News will carry a report on Friday.

has been proven at one bar already. The Ibrox Bar on on Calle Lepanto was ordered to close by police after social distancing rules were broken ¨for a short time on the 12th/13th¨. A video was circulated on social media which was evidently bought to the attention of the police. At present the bar remains closed and they are awaiting official information on when they can re-open. On Friday the newly awaited Mateo's Bar opened, owned by Benidorm series writer Derren Litten. A video was once again circulated of the opening night showing huge crowds with no social distancing being adhered to at all – and quickly taken down by him, probably fearful of the same fate. He then broadcast an

apology on Sunday morning and admitted that they had had a visit from the police – with many saying he was is-
sued with a fine. The bar was closed on Sunday and Monday and due to open back up yesterday.
Axe man arrested in Los Alcázares
A man with an axe attacked two local police and Guardia Civil patrols last Sunday at his apartment in Los Alcázares. A neighbour had called the police asking for help because the man was threatening them with the axe from his property. When the officers arrived, the man warned them that if they came into his house, he would kill them. The officers tried to talk to him and calm him down, but the man cornered them in the corridor and they eventually had to tackle him and subdue him. One of the officers suffered light injuries during the fight, but they managed to arrest him and take him to the Guardia Civil station.
Something fishy A person who was selling fish out the back of a van around the streets of Almoradí was reported by the local police on Saturday morning.
A force spokesman said: “This activity is not permitted because it can endanger residents by not respecting health regulations.”

APAD dog shelter gets Dénia's contract By Samantha Kett APAD dog shelter gets Dénia's 'waifs and strays' contract after year-long paper trail Pet shelter APAD has finally got the job of being Dénia's dedicated animal rescue centre after headaches and bureaucracy led to their losing the bid last year. The dog sanctuary, which has been running for 26
years and has never put any animal to sleep except on entirely humane grounds, reapplied for the contract for taking in Dénia's waifs and strays in 2019, but set its price at exactly the council's offer amount. This meant when Seproanimal, based in Vinaròs (Castellón province) undercut them by a relatively small sum, it was automatically awarded the contract. Huge protests, and a peti-
tion on Change.org, ensued, as Seproanimal does not have a no-kill policy and is a profit-making pound and boarding kennels. Seproanimal does, however, have a dedicated adoption centre which finds forever homes for around 1,700 dogs a year, as well as an on-site vet, and Dénia's councillor in charge, Javier Scotto, said no animal is ever put to sleep without his signing off a permission form
first. An animal-lover and petowner himself, Scotto says he has never been asked to do this and would automatically reject any request to do so except for purely humane motives, as 'no-kill' is part of the contract terms. But this did not convince the public, and Seproanimal decided it was in Dénia's interest not to go ahead with its bid, so it deliberately missed the deadline to file
the paperwork. As a result, the job had to go out to tender again, and has now been awarded to APAD for just under €286,000 plus IVA. APAD will now turn its shelter into a complete onestop-shop animal care centre handling animal welfare issues across the board for the next four years, after which the contract can be automatically renewed for another year if both parties wish.

Danceathon raises vital funds for JVHelp
The El Cid Restaurant was an ideal venue for the Danceathon organised by Pam Small and thanks to the generosity of all those attending over €1,000 was raised for Jalón Valley Help. After the long lockdown this was really a great boost for JVH funds but importantly an event with such a good atmosphere in these times was tremendous for all the participants. There were four events for everyone to have a try and Pam Small managed to fit in running the Fitsteps too. Yoga with Dionne Hughes and Keep Fit with Sarah Louise Pearce plus Jacintha Hoogewerf’s Aquafit made up the programme for the day that so many people enjoyed. Jalón Valley Help ran a craft and merchandise stall and a raffle that was very
well supported. Elaine Horton, Jalón Valley Help President, said “This was an ideal venue for the event and thank you to El Cid Restaurant for their generosity. I must say our gratitude goes to Pam Small for organising the event but a really big thanks to all the participants who seemed to really enjoy the day. It’s great to be getting back to normal and we hope that upcoming events will be as well supported.” The OK Band evening this Saturday, July 25 in Alcalalí is sold out. The next occasion for your diary is the Entertainers performing at Los Arcos, Pedreguer on Thursday, August 27 at 7.30pm. Tickets from eventsjvh@ gmail.com - another super evening in prospect.
Jávea Players summer show Master of the Musical will be held in the Casa de Cultura, Plaça Baix, Jávea Old Town, from July 27 to August 1 showcasing well-loved pieces from some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musicals. Tickets are €19.50 including a pre
show tapas meal at 7pm at Bar Imperial. Seats will be allocated upon arrival. Show starts at 9pm. For more information see the website www.javeaplayers.com Read more about this show in Costa Blanca News on Friday.
Donation helps with supplies for cat shelter This is Isobel from Germany donating a generous €500 and a large bag of bedding to ADAT (Association of Defenders of Animals of Torrevieja) based at the municipal albergue (animal shelter) in Avenida Los Nénufares, beside the fire station. ADAT helps provide many necessary supplies such as more expensive wet and dry food for cats and kittens, as the cats (like people) have different
dietary requirements. In addition ADAT helps to finance the sterilisation of feral street cats in order to control the street cat population as much as possible. If you care to know more about ADAT, the shelter or indeed like to help in any way please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
And the band played on!
Last weekend the Alfaz del Pi orchestra, la Sociedad Musical La Lira offered their first concert since the lockdown due to the pandemic crisis. As part of the 32nd Alfaz Film Festival currently be celebrated in Alfaz which finishes this Saturday, the open air concert took place last Saturday
evening, July 18, on the beach front of Albir by the anchor with all the health and safety protocols in place. This year, the band celebrates 40 years and under the direction of David Fernández Rodríguez, the band offered a wonderful concert with a very appreciative audience.

Prolonged use of medicines
It is reported that at any one given time, almost 50% of us are taking at least one prescription drug. This is not taking into account over the counter medications. This figure is quite incredible! So, we take a lot of medicine, but are we using some for too long? Many medicines are made to ease minor, temporary problems, but taking them for too long may have a counter effect and cause other problems. In the long run, some medications can do more harm than good. In some cases, changing your habits may ease the symptoms you’re using the medication for in the first place. We have to be aware that with any medication, either prescribed or over the counter, there are usually risks. However, if you have a medical condition that requires long term treatment of course the benefits may outweigh the risks. One concern is that prolonged use of medication may mask a more serious health problem. SHORT-TERM medications NSAIDs Available both over the counter and in prescription strength, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have long carried warnings about potential risks of heart attack and stroke. After looking at new safety information, it suggests the risks are greater than first thought, and are seen even with short-term use and in people without a history of heart disease. According to the FDA the risk appears greater at higher doses and recommends that the lowest effective amount should be used for the shortest possible time. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) These are medications that treat heartburn. People should only take over the counter forms for about 2 weeks. If you still have repeated heartburn, you should see your G.P. partly to make sure the over the counter PPI isn’t hiding

something else. Your doctor might rule out other issues and put you on a prescription PPI. There are patients who take long-term PPIs with no problems, but you do have to be aware there are potential risks. Over-the-counter nasal sprays and oral decongestants Decongestant nasal sprays, are intended for temporary congestion. Taking decongestants containing pseudoephedrine by mouth long term can lead to other problems, including seizures, hallucinations, headaches, and insomnia. If you have lingering congestion, talk to your doctor, because there are other ways to treat it.
Benadryl and other anticholinergics Over the counter diphenhydramine, found in Benadryl and some sleep aids, is an anticholinergic. So are some prescription antidepressants, bladder control medications, and drugs for Parkinson’s disease. A recent study found that taking any drug in this category for 3 years or more could raise your risk of getting dementia by more than 50%. If you’ve been taking one of these medications for more than a few years, it

might be a good idea to ask your doctor whether you still need it, whether there are alternatives, and discuss the risks and benefits of stopping. Sleeping pills Whether or not they are anticholinergics, prescription and over the counter sleeping pills are not for long term, nightly use as you can build up a tolerance to them making the same dose will no longer be effective. Insomnia can also be a sign of another problem such as anxiety, depression, or sleep apnoea, all needing a different treatment. Insomnia could also be a side effect of another medication. Changing your lifestyle and habits can make it easier to get to sleep. For example, don't watch TV in bed, avoid exercise too close to bed time, limit intake of alcohol etc. If you need sleeping tablets for more than a few weeks, talk to your doctor about your insomnia.
LONG-TERM medications Some prescription meds treat conditions that could last a lifetime. Examples are: Antidepressants Expect to take an antidepressant for at least 6 months to a year for a first or second episode of depression. If you’ve had several bouts of depression your doctor might suggest you take the prescription indefinitely. Antidepressants have side effects, such as insomnia and less sexual desire, but the risk of side effects isn’t thought to increase for people who take the medications long term. One has to way up the prs and cons of long term antidepressants. Exercise, good sleeping habits and professional counselling can all help. Statins For many people, the main benefit of statins (prevention of heart disease) outweighs any potential risks that statins bring.
Side effects such as muscle pain are fairly common. Some people who take statins report a mild memory loss after starting the drug, but researchers say there is not enough evidence to support a connection between the two. In rare cases, statins can cause liver damage. You should call your doctor immediately if you are unusually tired, have lost your appetite, have right upper abdominal discomfort, dark urine, or yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes. Statins may also slightly raise the risk for type 2 diabetes. Those at risk (strong family history) should have their blood sugar monitored. Antipsychotics Depending on your condition, you may need antipsychotic medication for years, or for life. But some studies suggest that the people who benefit most from these drugs take them for only a few years. The drugs prevent psychotic symptoms for the first few years, but people who stay on them for a lifetime might have about the same risk of a relapse as people who stop after a couple of years. Antipsychotics could also cause new side effects as you age. However it is important NEVER to stop taking antipsychotic medications without talking to your doctor. Always consult your doctor before you stop ANY medication. Article supplied by Family Medical Centre, Albir. Call 96 686 5072 or email firstname.lastname@example.org

Could my child have scoliosis? By Lisa Salmon, PA Caroline Freedman, author of The Scoliosis Handbook, explains how to spot the signs of curvature of the spine in children, and how it's treated. My 12-year-old daughter slouches a lot and sometimes says her back hurts, and my friend says I should get her checked for scoliosis. What is this, and is it serious?
Personal trainer Caroline Freedman, author of The Scoliosis Handbook, was diagnosed with scoliosis herself at the age of 15 and now one of her children has the condition. She says: "I really understand your concern for your daughter. Children do slouch, especially over their digital devices and it's difficult to detect whether this is just down to bad posture or if there's something very wrong with their backs. "Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine, where it twists and curves to the right or left side or both, forming an 'S' shape. It can also affect the position of the ribs, creating a hump on one side. If the spine develops a major curve this can cause pain, while also putting pressure on the heart, lungs and other organs. Scoliosis affects three to four children in every thousand from the ages of 10-15 onwards, of which 80% are girls. If the scoliosis is severe
the condition is serious and not only physical but can have an enormous effect on their mental health. "Mostly, scoliosis is of unknown cause, although some cases occur before birth and in very young people. Adults can also develop a curve.
"As you're clearly feeling anxious after your friend's observation of your daughter's spine, I definitely suggest you take your daughter to see a GP. He may then refer her to a specialist scoliosis consultant. Diagnosis would include an examination, X-ray, and/or a CT scan and MRI. "Treatment for scoliosis includes wearing a spinal brace to help straighten the spine which can work, depending on the stage of the curvature - and in severe cases, spinal fusion surgery. Exercise, physiotherapy and massage can also alleviate pain before and after surgery. "A simple way for you to check for scoliosis is to get your daughter to bend forward and touch her toes. You'll be able to see if her back is symmetrical or if one side looks more raised than the other. "Look to see if one shoulder or hip is sticking out or if her waist is more pronounced on one side. Do her T-shirts or sweaters look wonky, is she complaining of any pain, or
does she describe a pulling sensation over one side of her ribs on her back? "Please remember most cases are mild and don't need any intervention but it's important to watch children's spines as they grow." The Scoliosis Handbook is published by Hammersmith Books, available now.

Can CBD Replace Traditional Pain Meds?
How This All Natural Solution is Gaining Popularity CBD or Cannabidiol extracted from the Cannabis plant is steadily growing in popularity as a natural treatment for pain relief, ranging from headaches, lower back and joint pain to pain endured with cancer and fibromyalgia. More and more people prefer a healthy, natural approach to pain relief rather than using standard pain medication with the known side effects of liver and kidney damage and dependency. In fact, Cannabis has been used in Eastern medicine for thousands of years. You could ask, how can one plant have such an effect on our bodies? We have an endocannabinoid system with thousands of receptors all over our bodies and CBD has been proven to engage and activate these receptors. CBD encourages the body to create more of its own cannabinoids. When we increase the amount of receptors that are activated, it decreases the pain signals to our brain.
CBD also reduces inflammation by decreasing the production of cytokines and reduces anxiety associated with pain. A 2019 consumer survey by CBD Intel found that pain relief was the most popular reason for using CBD, and the EU CBD consumer report showed that 40% of respondents across Europe citied pain management as their main reason for using CBD Pure Organic CBD, based in Javea on the Costa Blanca has had many success stories: Sam aged 41 suffers from Chronic Fibromyalgia after 3 days of taking Full Spectrum 20% said ‘I started taking 3 drops and didn’t feel anything so I upped to 4 drops twice a day, it slows down my mind and gives me a calming effect, once I get calm I can focus and manage the pain . Knowing I can have an evening where my body and mind are relaxing to recover is a big big thing for me , I just can’t explain how much of a difference it makes to someone like me . just being able to get some relief each day will change my life
Annette, aged 88 from Torrevieja, suffers from knee and shoulder pain from previous falls. She also struggles to keep balance when standing as she has Meneur's disease. After taking a 15% strength CBD for the last 2 weeks, Annette says ‘I’m so happy, I am now feeling little or no pain in my knee and I can stand for longer periods of time without the fear of falling'. If you're looking to buy CBD, especially for the first time, Pure Organic CBD makes it so easy to choose the right product for its intended use. Our website has videos that teach people just starting out how to select a product and what to expect. Have a look at www.pureorganiccbd.com
Non-alcoholic fatty liver Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) develops when the triglycerides which is a fat found in the blood builds up in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol. One of the most effective treatments for the disease is to eat a healthy diet and weight loss. The onset of NAFLD is generally a slow process and has little or no symptoms but can be easily detected in a simple ultrasound or CT scan. It is important to treat the disease as in some cases can damage the liver and cause cirrhosis. This is
when the liver becomes extensively scarred and cannot work properly leading to liver failure. In some cases, the disorder can manifest as a more aggressive form of liver disease called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which causes liver inflammation and scarring and can progress to liver cancer. Contact your health adviser for a simple ultrasound which can be performed to diagnose the disease. Dietary advice can be given to help combat the disease by a nutritionist.

tween now and the end of September. Each month, a winner will be drawn from a cyber-hat and will get €150 to spend in the on-site Carrefour supermarket. “We know these are tough times for family finances, and a prize like this could be a huge source of relief to the winners,” says El Portal's centre manager, Virginia Carrasco. “Our aim is to get back to a
situation as close to normality as possible so we can continue launching offers and promotions to our customers and carry on working with various charitable schemes – as we've always done – to help to create a more equal and fair society in our district.” El Portal de la Marina, off the N-332 in Ondara, opened in February 2008, has over 100 shops and restaurants, and employs around 600 people.

Empty space on your veg patch? Boost soil with green manure crops By Hannah Stephenson, PA
ground covered with small seedlings, and after six weeks, these can be chopped and folded into the soil to add nutrients. Fenugreek is another nitrogen-fixer for summer, really fast growing and its bushy plants are great for suppressing weeds. It can be planted in late spring or summer and grown for up to three months.
Green manure crops could fill empty space on allotments and boost harvests, Hannah Stephenson reports. If you've spare room on your allotment, or in your garden, for crops that will fill empty spaces and boost your soil, consider plants that can turn into green manure. You may have harvested potatoes and onions, but plant some fast-germinating replacements and you'll stop weeds from growing, keep the goodness in, and help soil structure. What are green manures? They are crops that can help improve your plot's structure, stop nutrients from being washed out by rain, and provide good ground cover to stop weeds emerging. Those that belong to the pea and bean family (legumes) for example, in summer, can store nitrogen in their roots, (they're known as good nitrogen-fixers) that can be ploughed back into the earth. Which crops make good green manures? At this time of year they in-
Crimson clover clude mustard, fodder radish, fenugreek, buckwheat and phacelia, which can be slotted in, in six to eight week gaps when the ground is cleared between crops. Some sown in early autumn, including winter beans, grazing rye and winter tares, will last through the winter and can be dug into the soil when it warms up in spring. How long do they take to grow? Some, such as mustard, are fast-germinating. Two weeks after sowing you'll find the
When do I cut them down? Chop the fast-growing ones when you need the ground back. Just dig them up, chopping up the leaves and stems as you go to speed up decomposition. Leave them a few days to wilt and then dig them into the soil. Longer term crops such as alfalfa, red clover and trefoil can be left in the ground for a year and clipped from time to time to stop them from going woody. They are ideal for soil that's been overused and needs to rest.
Phacelia flower can sow late crops such as onion and garlic. What if I want to wait? If you have no crops to fill the space, cover the green manure-treated bed with cardboard or landscape fabric to keep the nutrients from the green manure in, which will give you a great seedbed to sow seeds in come spring. What else can I grow to help my crops? Try growing comfrey, which absorbs nutrients and min-
What benefits do they provide? Clover, fenugreek, winter beans and alfalfa are good nitrogen-fixers, storing nitrogen in their roots, while clover and phacelia flowers are a magnet for beneficial insects, which can help pollinate crops, so leave some to flower. Italian ryegrass and buckwheat have root systems that will help break up heavy ground.
erals and can be made into a liquid feed. Just cut it down to the ground, fill a bucket with the leaves and stems of the plant, packing them in tightly and then filling the bucket with water. Set it aside for three weeks (but keep it away from the house as it pongs when it decomposes), then strain off the liquid into a container with a tight lid. When you want to feed your plants, dilute the liquid with water at a ratio of around 10:1 and feed your plants weekly into autumn. Fenugreek
