Rainfall respite Visit our website www.thepost.es

A fierce storm left up to 20 litres of rain per square metre in just one hour at several points throughout Alicante province on Sunday night. L’Alacantí district and Elche registered the most rainfall between 8 and 9.30pm. The considerable amount of rainfall over the past week has given a little respite to low water levels in Costa reservoirs - although rainfall so far in 2016 is still well below half the yearly average. See an update and some spectacular weather photos in Friday’s Costa Blanca News.

Victims of gender violence in Benidorm will now be able to change their house locks for free. The council has signed an agreement with the locksmiths’ union to provide an extra helping hand to mistreated partners, with the inking of the deal timed to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women last Friday (November 25). According to Mayor Toni Pérez, the free service will be available to ‘all gender violence victims who have a court order authorising them to change the locks to their home’. The two companies belonging to the union will

swap the old one for a new safety lock, with all expenses covered by the town hall. Those concerned can request the service at the municipal equality council headquarters. Benidorm is the fourth town in Alicante province and the first in the Marina Baja district to sign this deal. Wiping out gender violence Dozens of bars, cafeterias and restaurants in the eight towns that constitute the Marina Baja district are currently adding their voice to the campaign to 'wipe' out gender violence. Customers are greeted by serviettes bearing the slo-

gan ‘No a la violencia de género’ (‘No to gender violence’), with the aim of bringing the message to the entire population and stressing the importance of keeping up the fight in all areas of daily life. Establishments in Benidorm, Altea, Callosa d’en Sarrià, Alfaz del Pi, Polop, Finestrat, La Nucía and Villajoyosa have joined the campaign, which was timed to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Friday. Also on Friday and throughout the weekend, several marches and gatherings were held by local councils to condemn gender violence.

Parents staged a protest in Bigastro on Sunday demanding that they be paid the grant towards school books from the regional government’s Xarxa Llibres scheme.

They are entitled to up to €200 under the programme, which was instigated at the start of the school year in September 2015. The parents expressed

their frustration at the impasse between the town hall and the regional government and are planning another demonstration for this Sunday.

All clear for new police station Benidorm council on Monday approved the reclassification of land needed for the construction of the new police station in the Salto del Agua area. This was a vital step before awarding ownership of the plot to the central government, which will have a maximum of five years to complete the work after accepting the donation. If the national executive fails to meet the deadline, possession will return to the local authorities. Benidorm council hopes this will not be the case, and has requested that Spanish President Mariano Rajoy in-

cludes the project in next year’s national budget. According to municipal heritage councillor Lourdes Caselles, the new police

station is ‘necessary and indispensable’ for both the National Police force based in the town and for the general public.

Running for Daniel The 33rd edition of the Benidorm half marathon, held last weekend, was the most emotive yet as organisers held a moving tribute to Daniel Juárez, who passed away after crossing the finishing line last year. A minute’s silence in

memory of the well-known and sorely missed runner was held at the start, while Mayor Toni Pérez handed a commemorative plaque to Daniel’s parents, relatives and friends. More than 2,500 athletes half of whom were foreign

residents or visitors - took part in the race through the streets of Benidorm, with Alicante-based Moroccan runner Mohamed Boucetta claiming the title in the male category, while Cuban ace Yamilka González lifted the trophy for the women.

The activity was organised by the association of south-east naturalists (ANSE) in collaboration with the town hall. Four people were evacuated from their homes due to a fire in a block of flats in Callosa de Segura on Thursday, informed the Guardia Civil. The fire started in one flat and this was the only one damaged, but it af-

fected two more and the quantity of smoke required the four people who were in the building to be escorted out. Two of them were taken to Vega Baja Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation

and one was discharged on Friday, while the other remained in observation but with no cause for concern. It seems that faulty electrics on an extractor started the fire, but the Guardia Civil are still investigating.

A fun day out More than 3,000 people took part in the ninth celebration of Universal Children’s Day in La Nucía on Saturday. Despite adverse weather predictions, the sun was shin-

ing as hundreds of children converged on the car park of the Camilo Cano sports centre to enjoy the handcraft workshops, bouncy castles, trampolines, dancing and up to 20

activities organised by the council completely free of charge. The aim of the event is to encourage integration and socialising among residents via fun games for kids.

High seas smugglers A major international drug smuggling organisation has been taken down in Melilla, Lorca (Murcia), Málaga, Alicante and Algeciras (Cádiz) by the National Police, Guardia Civil and the customs agency. The operation also took place in international waters, where two boats were boarded and significant amounts of drugs seized. A total of 25 people have been arrested and over five tonnes of hashish seized, along with two supply ships, five pneumatic motor boats, weapons, cash, telephones, computers and lots of documents. A police spokesman said the gang smuggled drugs into Spain by sea and then on to Libya and Egypt, or by road into Europe – principally to France and Germany - in vehicles with false bottoms. They were divided into cells which managed the logistics, purchase and preparation of boats, storage and distribution of hashish So-called ‘mule cars’ were used to carry the drugs, using families with children so as not to attract

attention. Two yachts were boarded by Guardia Civil about 100 miles off the coast of Algeria, one flying under a fake German flag that was based at Almerimar (Almería) and carrying 950 kilos of hashish, and a Spanish-registered one based at Mazarrón, which contained over 4,000 kilos of the drug.

Another 200 kilos was found at one of the gang’s storehouses, in Villa Nueva de la Concepción (Málaga), where they had significant security measures in place and firearms to defend themselves. This joint operation was coordinated by the intelligence centre against organised crime (CITCO).

Fifty-five metres of ‘turrón’ Alicante city centre came to a standstill on Thursday evening when the world’s largest ever bar of ‘turrón’ was set out on tables along Avenida Federico Soto. The monster Christmas nougat sweet was created to mark the 75th anniversary of both high-street shopping centre franchise El Corte Inglés and provin-

cial newspaper Información. Tasters queued up for several hours just to grab one of the 10,000 portions of the soft, almond-based Jijona ‘turrón’ that measured 55 metres long and weighed 340 kilos, washed down with 700 litres of ‘mistela’ white wine liqueur.

Lack of interest Algorfa town hall has announced it is going to pay off €477,000 of its debt early in order to save money on interest payments. “So far this year the town hall has paid off more than a million euros of loans and the objective is to continue in this vein until most of the debt is gone,” explained mayor Manuel Ros. He assured that with these latest

payments they have saved residents €48,000 in interest, thanks to funding left over from the budget.

Calpe ruins to be protected The council of culture announced this week that the roman ruins adjacent to Calpe rock, along with the ‘Queen’s Baths’, will soon be declared a site of cultural interest, meaning no more developments can ever take place on that particular stretch of coastline. The Roman ruins, dating back to between the second and seventh century, have been fenced off for many years, with the occasional tour being allowed. Archaeologists have spent many years uncovering relics and discovering how Roman life was lived by the sea. Originally reaching from the sea to the salt lake, the land between has been slowly built on over the years, covering a lot of the

Guardamar town hall has launched a campaign to prevent blindness by bringing together several local opticians to offer free eye tests until December 16. They are inviting all local residents to visit their nearest optician during this period to take advantage of the free eye tests and make sure that their eyes are healthy and their vision is good. One of the participating opticians, Specsavers Opticas on Avenida País Valenciano, said they are delighted to be part of this important campaign and hope that everyone will make the time to get their eyes tested. “There are approximately 285 million people worldwide who live with impaired vision and blindness. Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable through treatment and protective measures. This shows just how import-

ant it is to take steps to prevent avoidable blindness from conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy,” explains Francisco Manuel Jurado Alonso, the Specsavers store director. “All of these conditions and many others can be easily identified with a complete eye test and early diagnosis is crucial to effective treatment and avoiding permanent vision loss. If necessary, the optometrist will refer you directly for further medical examination with an ophthalmologist or doctor. This is an important health check as well as simply because you think you may need glasses.” Specsavers Opticas Guardamar is located in Avenida País Valenciano 43Bajo, Guardamar del Segura, Alicante, 03140. Call 96 508 3273 to book an eye test or visit www.specsavers.es for more information.

remains. The ruins included a luxury villa and a fish farm. As there is currently more development planned in Calpe, it was quite urgent that the remains of the site

were protected. Should you wish to visit this interesting location, it can be found along the seafront between the port and the Arenal beach.

When all this was fields In the not so distant past, Orihuela Costa was a largely uninhabited area with few homes and large swathes of empty land, in contrast to the mass of urbanisations that characterise the area today. If you are curious about the history of how this came about, a professor of human geography will be giving a talk

about it (in Spanish) at the town hall building in Playa Flamenca on Thursday (December 1). Dr Gregorio Canales Martínez from Alicante University will be presenting ‘The start and evolution of population on the coast of Orihuela’ at 7pm and entry is free.

DEPOSITS LOST ON OFF-PLAN SPANISH PROPERTY PURCHASE Spain’s Supreme Court could finally offer closure to the estimated 100,000 Britons whose dreams of owning a place in the sun ended in disaster when constructors and builders went bankrupt or just disappeared and left the development unfinished. With this new Court Ruling in place, many Britons who lost their deposit to secure a property ‘off-plan’ and/or who made further stage payments can now claim back their lost monies. The average deposits paid were at least £60,000 and some much higher, as the companies involved were hit by Spain’s financial crisis around 2008.

Now Spain’s highest court is holding the banks responsible for the missing money deposited in their accounts which could allow British victims to claim back up to £4bn in lost deposits, according to research by the law firm Spanish Legal Reclaims. Although official data is not available, Spanish Legal Reclaims estimates that Spanish banks could be forced to refund up to £15bn to “off-plan” buyers from across Europe who lost their deposits in the crash. One such person caught in these tragic circumstances was Stephanie Davis and her late husband who lost around 75,000 Euros. They intended buying their ‘place in the sun’ on the Costa del Sol and had paid this as a deposit plus several additional payments, totalling over half of the150,000 Euros asking price. Stephanie now has her fingers crossed as she is now in the expert hands of Spanish Legal Reclaims of Barcelona, who are in the process of claiming her monies back. There is

no language barrier for her either, as Spanish Legal Reclaims speak English and will handle the whole case on her behalf. With more Britons owning a holiday home in Spain than any other nationality, UK citizens were hit hard by Spain’s Mrs. Stephanie Davis property crash. Spanish Legal Reclaims has unparalleled expertise in this area of law, and has formed a dedicated legal team to help non-Spaniards lodge a successful claim and win their money back on a no win, no fee basis and, as mentioned previously, they speak English. Spanish Legal reclaims can be contacted by telephone in Spain on 936 804 563 or in the UK on FREEFONE 0800 689 0687. Alternatively by email to: info@spanishlegalreclaims.com. Barclays launches contactless ATMs Barclays Bank has launched Britain’s first contactless cash machines, allowing customers to withdraw money at the tap of a phone or card. The ATMs have initially been piloted in the north of England before being rolled out to 600 machines across Britain by the end of Janu-

ary next year. Customers will be able to take out up to £100 at the inbranch cash machines, which is faster and more secure than the traditional method of inserting a card and verifying the user through a PIN, according to Barclays. The bank said contactless withdrawals mean the card

or phone never leaves the hands of customers, removing the risk of magnetic card skimming. It also means customers will be better protected from distraction fraud - where con artists watch people enter their PIN and then distract the customer while stealing their card.

REMEMBERING DJANGO REINDHART

Montgo Chorale's Christmas Concert Montgo Chorale's annual Christmas Concert this year breaks new ground in that it contains more than just the traditional Christmas Carols which we have been singing and enjoying for the past decade. Time for a change! Our programme will include two short works besides some Carols by the choir, plus the well-known ones in which we invite the audience to participate. Both works are new to us as a choir, and very likely are new

to the majority of the audience. We will open the concert with George Malcolm's Mass at the Crib, a comparatively unknown mass but beautifully written; short, unassuming and melodic. The other work is Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on Christmas Carols, in which he cleverly blends his love of traditional English folk music with traditional Carols. The baritone soloist in this work is John Edwards, who sang as one of our soloists five

years ago. Gordon Lawson is directing his last Christmas Concert with the chorale, and Heather Butcher is our accompanist. The concert will take place in the Fishermen's Church in Jávea Port at 4.30pm on Sunday, December 11. As usual, entry is free but we shall be collecting donations as you leave. The money raised will go to support the work of the local Caritas.

WOULD YOU HIRE A SPANISH SOLICITOR FOR A REALLY SMALL PROBLEM? The new way of accessing legal issues has reached expats in Spain. The economies of scale and the new ways of providing services now allows that the legal assistance can be dealt with in the highest quality and at the best possible price even with the smallest issues. The first to arrive has been LEGAL LIFELINE, and are here to stay. We all know how to deal with small problems in our own country. Problems like minor consumer issues such as, overcharges with utilities or home owner’s association problems, are problems that we would usually know how to manage and would know what advice ask for in our home country.

But Legal problems always seem bigger when you live abroad. Small and big legal problems and doubts become more difficult to resolve when the expat does not have anyone to turn to and when he does not know the language. Lots of expats will personally relate to a lot of these possible problems not only the important issues but there are many legal doubts that are taking place amongst English speakers within the community of Spain. Who would have thought that a Home Owners´ Association would have reached an agreement that negatively would affect you, how do I know if this is legal or if can I oppose to it? Do I have my pets legally in Spain? where do I have to pay my taxes?... On the other hand, the normal prices of law firms could be excessive even when the client could have one of the most common daily issues that, can be easily resolvable by LEGAL LIFELINE nevertheless, will affect the expat in a major way. All this could make the expats ignore these issues and not solve their problems, therefore, lose money and lose the opportunity to defend their rights.

LEGAL LIFELINE, a new way for English speakers in Spain. LEGAL LIFELINE has created a service to provide legal solutions for expats with any legal problem in Spain and for only a fixed rate of 184€ per year. For this service, it is only €184 a year, LEGAL LIFELINE gives you unlimited access to a team of bilingual lawyers giving one to one assistance in plain English. LEGAL LIFELINE do not just assess the client’s legal problem, but they will also provide any services giving the client 24/7 full legal advice, negotiations and even drawing up contracts, letters of complaint, legal documents, etc.

Dry skin beater An egg and oil mask is suitable for all skin types, in particular dry skin. It is nourishing and softening, and restores sapped tone. Beat a whole egg, add a dash of oil (normal cooking oil will do) and mix in well. To apply, saturate a ball of cotton wool with the mixture and stroke it over exfoliated skin. Leave for a minimum of 10 minutes (you will be able to feel the mask drying) and rinse off using tepid water. Pat your face dry using a soft towel.

Do you suffer from FOSO? First it was FOMO (fear of missing out) that plagued the nation, now it's FOSO, the horror of finding yourself in the Same Outfit as someone else. Research by Etsy has found that 28% of Brits know they own the same item of clothing as a friend or family member, with one in 10 admitting they've returned a garment after discovering their doppelganger. Unwilling to give up their favourite fashions, 38% admit they coordinate outfits before events to keep the dreaded FOSO at bay.

Don't let yourself go in middle age Keeping fit and healthy in middle age is key to reducing the risk of heart problems later in life, research suggests. Staying slim, keeping blood pressure low and staying free of diabetes between the ages of 45 and 55 reduces the risk of heart failure by 86% for their remaining life, according to a new study. The debilitating condition, in which the heart struggles to pump blood around the body, often leaves people bedbound and unable to walk far, and they are usually breathless, even when resting. But the new study, led by North-

western University in Chicago, reveals that the condition can be prevented with a change in lifestyle earlier in life. Their findings revealed that people who were free of diabetes, had a healthy body mass index, and had normal blood pressure at both 45 and 55 had a substantially lower risk for heart failure. According to the results, men without any of the three risk factors lived an average of 10.6 years longer free of heart failure, while women lived an average of 14.9 years longer without heart failure.

Fifth of UK dieters gain weight from calorie-counting Keen to get a handle on your weight, but hate the thought of calorie-counting? Countless experts have dismissed caloriecounting as a counterproductive diet 'trap' over the years, and a new survey by Freeletics (www.freeletics.com/en) confirms this approach often doesn't work longterm. The digital health and fitness brand quizzed 1,036 people, and found while 77% of caloriecounters admit they do so in order to try and lose weight, almost a fifth (19%) actually ended up gaining weight instead. More than half (55%) said counting calories led to increased cravings, with 10% admitting they end up binge-eating as a result. It seems this

SweDent

approach to weight-loss can encourage people to reduce their food intake too much as well; over a third (36%) said they instantly gained any weight they'd lost once they stopped calorie-counting. "Calorie counting often leads to psychological issues where people obsess over calories, which makes them think about food more and more, thus creating an unhealthy relationship with food," says Freeletics nutrition specialist Katharina Kaiser. "By integrating balanced eating principles into your daily routine, you can avoid the laborious activity of calorie-counting, or the classic yo-yo effect as you come on and off intense diet regimes."

Endometrial cancer

Cancer of the endometrium, unlike many other cancers, is often diagnosed early. Early diagnosis means that the cancer can be treated and survival rates are very good by comparison. Early diagnosis, however, can only be obtained if the patient takes notice of the symptoms and reports them to her doctor! Endometrial cancer (also known as cancer of the womb) occurs when the cells that form the lining of the womb (the endometrium) multiply in an abnormal fashion and form a tumour. Some women are at greater risk than others, such as those who: 쐽 Have never been pregnant 쐽 Started menstruating at a young age (younger than 12) 쐽 Had a late menopause 쐽 Have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (causing irregular ovulation) 쐽 Are diabetic (causing irregular ovulation) 쐽 Are obese (causing irregular ovulation) 쐽 Are older, especially when past the menopause 쐽 Are using hormone treatments for breast cancer (although the benefits usually outweigh the risks) 쐽 Have Hereditary Non-

polyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC). This is an inherited syndrome that increases the risk of certain cancers including colon and endometrial cancer. 쐽 Are using oestrogen only hormone replacement therapy. Signs and symptoms of endometrial cancer may include: 쐽 Bleeding after the menopause 쐽 Bleeding between periods

쐽 An abnormal, watery or bloody discharge 쐽 Low abdominal pain 쐽 Pain during intercourse. There are numerous causes for the symptoms listed above and most are not serious. However, it is important to see your doctor promptly with any of the above symptoms to make sure especially if you are in one of the above risk categories.

Tips for saving money on your electricity bill 1. Make sure the power you have contracted is adequate for your needs, and no higher! 2. Contract the low tariff... You can expect savings of around 50% according to tariff. 3. Check your electricity bill - the graph shows your usage of high and low tariffs. 4. The lowest cost tariff for domestic contracts

is from 10pm until 12 noon (summer times 11pm until 1pm). 5. It is essential to adhere to the times stipulated on the low tariff... otherwise a higher charge will be made on the peak times and you’ll lose the benefits of a low tariff. 6. Use washing machines, dryers, water heaters, irons, dishwashers, swimming pool

pumps, air-conditioning, etc at night or first thing in the mornings, during low tariff hours. 7. Look at the electricity consumption rating when you purchase domestic appliances... A+++ is the most efficient. 8. Money saved using the low tariff can be used for heating, etc. Most people find their electricity bill remains the same even

when they have installed an efficient electrical heating system. 9. Some people may complain they find no saving using low cost tariff but this is because they are not adhering to the low tariff times! I have been using low tariff with Iberdrola for more than 25 years now and personally I find it means a substantial saving

every month. In a future article, we will look at the most advanced appliances to use in combination with the low tariff. Text supplied by Tony Clark, The International Electrician. For more information please phone Tony on 96 688 0287.

Megan is about two and a half years old and a real strong dog and full of the joys of life. She always searches for contact with everybody, humans as well as other animals, wanting them to play with her. She is used to living in a family. Her owner was very ill and his wife wasn’t able to take care of the dog. So, with a heavy heart, she had to let the dog go to the animal shelter. Fortunately, Megan has overcome this big change. She is a very active dog and she needs

Sally is just 8 months old and had been discarded by the people she thought would protect her. She was being bullied on the streets by feral cats and when we approached her with a cat box she immediately walked straight into it. She loves to curl up on a lap and will make a wonderful companion. Sally is vaccinated and sterilised. www.petsinspain.com, info@petsinspain.com

Louie, Spanish Mastiff. This big guy is a real gentle giant. He is loveable and likes a good belly rub. He is good with people and in excellent condition. He was found wandering the streets trying to interact with people. He appears to have been well looked after, but has obviously been lost and with no microchip found, we do not know his owners. He is well house trained, is very good on a lead and when left to roam freely within boundaries. He would make an excellent family dog. If you are able to give Louie a home, please call 600 845 420. www.k9club.es

Thanksgiving Thanksgiving, probably more than any other holiday, always brings out the sentimentalist in me. Most likely, it’s because of the vague, syrupy memories of a time when everything moved much slower and the food tasted much better. When I was young, we usually went to visit my mom’s brother, Uncle Bernard; his picturesque farm was out in the countryside of Southern Indiana, a few miles north of my hometown of Loogootee. The farm wasn’t exactly over the river and through the woods but it was close. (Note 1). Since we didn’t have a car, Uncle Bernard would come into town and pick us up; us being my mom, my sister, my brother and I. Uncle Bernard owned a four- or five-year-old preWWII Chevrolet that he drove so slowly, it seemed to take an hour to make the five-mile trip to the farm. His wife, Aunt Lucinea, was usually waiting on us when we finally arrived because, even though Thanksgiving was special, it was still a workday on the farm. Someone had to milk and feed the cows and the two work horses also had to be fed. It wasn’t me; to a six or or seven year old, the cows were a little scary and the horses were enormous. I seem to recall one cow being called Bossy, and for the horses, their names were Dobbin and…, and… well, shoot. I can’t remember the other one. There were also chickens, lots of chickens. Because of that, my memory tells me we had a baked hen on the holiday instead of turkey. However, that might not be right since I didn’t know the difference at that age. I do know we had fried chicken, but that was because fried chicken was a mainstay on their table and was served at almost every evening meal, just like hot biscuits and apple butter. The chickens were kept in the pen behind the smokehouse and when we were at the farm, the job of feeding the chickens fell to my brother Ron and me. It was also our job to catch three or four of those chickens and stick ‘em under a washtub where they would end up on the dinner table. The footing was slippery on the wet and frozen ground, which made snagging a crazed, wing-flapping chicken a difficult job. In addition, it took a certain amount of skill, a skill that my younger brother had not yet acquired, to raise that washtub just enough to stick a squirming chicken under it without letting the others loose. When we had them captured, my aunt or uncle would dispatch them using either the neck wringing method or an axe and the tree stump. Regardless pf the method, the headless bodies still flopped around in the blood-spattered snow while Ron and I tried to herd them together. The big folks were also busy getting a wood fire going under the big cast iron pot in the back yard. They needed hot water to dip the carcasses in so that the feathers could be pulled off. The smell of those hot, wet feathers should have been enough to turn me off fried chicken for life, but in this case, the end justified the means. My Aunt Lucine’s chicken would have made the Colonel throw rocks at his. Her frying of multiple

Across the Pond 33

On the box Who Do You Think You Are? (BBC1, 8pm) Thursday, 1/12/2016 Amanda Holden takes part in the popular genealogy documentary, in which famous faces trace their family trees. The actress and presenter looks into the rumoured French ancestry on her mother's side of the family, an investigation that leads to an extraordinary Napoleonic-era cross-Channel romance. But she doesn't stop there. The suicide of her paternal grandfather has always loomed large over her family - and when his story takes her to France once again, she is moved to discover how he helped others through a harrowing tragedy.

A regular column by Gordon Grindstaff, 'Across the pond' chickens also guaranteed that the young people at the table did not have to fight over the wishbone. (Note 2). In the years we didn’t go to Uncle Bernard’s farm, we went to my Uncle Mike and Aunt Marie’s home for the holiday. Uncle Mike and Aunt Marie provided me with my first identifiable taste of turkey. I know that to be true because Uncle Mike didn’t own a car so he would walk downtown a day or two before the holiday and come home dragging a live turkey on a leash like a big reluctant puppy where it went under a washtub. I don’t mean to imply that a trip downtown was a long way. This was a town of 2,500 souls and you could walk all the way across town and not break into a sweat. Even still today, I have no idea where he went to get that turkey and I never knew how it ended up on the table because he kept the method of snuffing it out to himself. In my limited exposure to the ways of the world, Uncle Mike also seemed to be unusual in that he did most of the cooking on Thanksgiving. In addition to killing and cleaning that turkey, he produced a moist, golden-brown bird stuffed with a mixture that, 50 years later, I can still taste. Uncle Mike made the turkey dressing from scratch using, among other things, oysters, and it tasted like the nectar of the gods. Although I didn’t think it strange at the time, now that I look back on it, I don’t know how he did it. This was, after all, the late 1940’s and here was a man who couldn’t drive a car, who lived in a small town at least 1,000 miles from the nearest oyster, and yet he came up with a turkey stuffing that would have been at home on any table in any seafaring town. Although I never figured out where he got hold of those little bi-valve creatures, I will say that I have tried to carry on his tradition of making oyster stuffing on Thanksgiving Day. Unfortunately, no one in my family will eat it. ******* G2 notes: Note 1: You know, even as I wrote that phrase, I found myself wondering if there are younger folks out there who will read this, scratch their heads and say aloud, “Over the river? What the hell is he talking about?” Note 2: Do kids still fight over the wishbone? Do turkeys still have wishbones or has that been bred out of them in the interests of keeping peace at the dinner table?

Our Guy in China (C4, 9pm) Monday, 5/12/2016 Guy Martin concludes his Chinese adventure by taking on his toughest-ever physical challenge as he sets to break the record for the fastest crossing of the Taklamakan Desert on a bicycle. He must travel 341 miles along the world's longest desert highway in less than 47 hours and as extreme fatigue sets in, he starts to nod off while riding, swerving off the edge of the road. Stopping in a lay-by for food and rest, he can't sleep because of his overactive mind and decides to keep riding through the night as he heads for the finish line in Qiemo. Last in the series.

The Choir: Gareth's Best in Britain (BBC2, 9pm) Tuesday, 6/12/2016 It's the Grand Final of Gareth Malone's contest to find Britain's most entertaining, undiscovered, amateur choir. Three are left in the game, and all that stands between them and the title of series champion is one last challenge, and that comes with a twist. While the loss of their leader poses a problem for one choir, another group decamps to the country to focus all their energies on victory. The choirs have 10 days to perfect their performances before they compete one final time, in front of a 2,000-strong crowd and a jury of musical experts, at London's Central Hall Westminster.

INSULATING YOUR HOME CAN SAVE YOU LOADS ON YOUR ENERGY BILL With the cold weather approaching and those ever increasing heating bills falling through the letterbox, now is the time to insulate and save money. Your house will be a much cosier environment when insulated. We can insulate the cavities in walls, ceilings and even floors. If you property has suspended plaster ceiling, the heat loss could be as high as 50%. The ecoconfort process fills the cavities with small polystyrene beads, which are injected into the cavity with an adhesive, to give a fully filled insulation mass. The injection process is effected from the outside of the property, via a series of 25mm holes which when finished are barely visible. There is a minimum of dirt or disruption inside the house. The insulating properties of the ecoconfort system remain effective for the life of the building and are not affected by water, bacteria, or mould, etc. The insulation also helps to eliminate black mould patches, which often appear on bedroom and bathroom walls. You will be amazed at the immediate difference you will feel in your property and also in your pocket. To arrange a survey of your property and a no obligation quote, please call 626 997 748 For more information visit our website www.ecoconfort.es or send us an email: info@ecoconfort.es
