Benidorm has given up on its attempts to become a leading destination for cruise ships after negotiations with several companies failed. Despite hard work and attractive offers, fleet managers could not be convinced to return to the tourism capital of the Marina Baja district. The inability to attract liners such as the German MS

Amadea, which docked in Benidorm two years ago, contrasts with the situation in other major coastal resorts. Torrevieja, and especially Alicante, have become major stops on the routes of large cruise ships, welcoming thousands of seafaring travellerseach year. Local business managers are not bemoaning the ab-

sence of cruises, however. Hotel owners in particular point out that cruise travellers do not sleep on land, therefore have no impact on the largest tourism-related sector in the resort. Spokespeople for the trade reveal that their aim now is to encourage trips to Benidorm from other cruise destinations such as Alicante.

Demand for Puerto Mayor More than 15,000 people signed a petition of environmental association ANSE asking Murcia regional government to restore the Puerto Mayor area at La Manga del Mar Menor. Puerto Mayor is an abandoned marina which was supposed to house some 900 boats and yachts at the end of La Manga del Mar Menor facing the Mediterranean Sea. The works were halted in 2005 following a court ruling, but the site has not been restored. The aim of the regional government and San Javier council is to launch the scheme again and build a sports area, but ANSE and Greenpeace have suggested restoring the dunes and

beach to turn the site into a natural park. “A total of 1,048 people have backed the council’s

proposal and ours has 15,000 supporters,” said ANSE’s president, Pedro García.

Prison for ‘baby in bin’ parents The parents of the new-born baby boy who was found dead in a refuse container in Pilar de la Horadada on October 4 by a homeless man were sent to prison on remand by an Orihuela judge. The parents are Romanian nationals who have two young daughters. They lived in Calle Miguel de Cervantes, near the refuse container. According to the court’s press officer, the judge is investigating an alleged case of manslaughter. The parents' flatmates were also arrested last week but released after being charged with a crime of concealment. The baby had been wrapped in a blanket and left in the rubbish container.

Torrevieja on film

Torrevieja has produced a second video to promote the businesses of the town. Councillor for commerce and the hostelry trade Manuela Osuna presented the video, which is aimed at social networks. The two-minute clip shows ‘the qualities of the town’ and its appeal for tourists.

Sra Osuna noted that the first video had more than 40,000 hits on Facebook and was shared more than 12,000 times. “These figures show that it works and that we are on the right track,” she said. She said that the latest video had been produced ‘with a lot of love’ and that businesses had produced a

‘collective shop window’ for the town. It shows emblematic parts of the town centre as well as services offered by local businesses. The clip can be seen on the town hall’s ‘concejalía de comercio’ (commerce department) page on YouTube on the link Nfx80qSTAu4

Baby wipe blockage Parts of the sewage network in Orihuela Costa have been cleared after blockages caused by baby wipes, sand and small stones occurred last week.

Councillor for the environment Miguel Ángel Fernández said lorries with pumps had been used to prise out the baby wipes, which had been taken to a specialised tip.

Sr Fernández stressed that baby wipes are ‘very polluting’ because they do not dissolve in water and block pipes and pumping stations.

Game over Benidorm council this week ratified its decision to terminate the contract awarded to the company in charge of managing the swimming pool and gymnasium at the Palau d’Esports. The decision to end the firm’s tenure was taken due to a series of alleged contract violations including defaulting on the required tax for the years 2014 and 2015, lack of maintenance carried

out on the installations, failure to perform a series of improvement works during the first six months of the contract, and not paying salaries to its employees. According to municipal councillor Lourdes Caselles, the company had requested the cancellation of the termination agreement by filing ‘the same allegations as when the initial decision to rescind their tenure was ta-

ken’ and which were already rejected by the local authorities. The council plenary formally gave the company eight days to vacate the premises. Sra Caselles explained that once the firm leaves the Palau, the complex would be closed for ‘between one and three days’, after which the town hall will take charge of the sports centre.

New National Police station edges nearer Benidorm council this week reclassified the land that will house the new National Police station. Town planning councillor Lourdes Caselles announced that the 5,000square-metre plot located at the entrance to the town is now classed as ‘public heritage’ – which reportedly does not entail any changes on a practical level, but which was one of the demands enforced by the central government to give the green light to the long-delayed project. More than 10 years since the plans were first announced, the reclassification is the final formal step required by the national executive to launch the project. However, there is still no set date to begin work - nor even a formal construction plan in place.

Sra Caselles vowed to send a missive to Madrid, pointing out that the last official requirement has been carried out and requesting that next year’s national budget includes funds for Benidorm police station.

MUNDOMAR BENIDORM PARTICIPATES IN THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM FOR BIRD TRAINERS Benidorm, 14-10-2016. IAATE recently hosted the INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM which took place in Portugal on October 9-12. Representatives from Mundomar attended the international conference for avian trainers, along with some 50 people from other top nature parks across the world. Mundomar’s activities go beyond the work that is carried out at the park facilities in Benidorm. Through its conservation programmes, Mundomar plays an active role in worldwide associations who pursue the same environmental goals. This is the case of the First International Bird Trainers Symposium organized by IAATE (an organisation engaged in the field of avian education through specific programmes of an environmental nature) in Portugal’s Zoo Marine Park. The workshops were held from 9 to 12 October and some of the most important nature parks from across the globe attended... experts from Canada, USA, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Portugal, who hosted the symposium. Experts from similar fields were brought together to pool their knowledge and analyse conservation, education and birds training methods. Mundomar was an active part of the forum since they coach animal and bird trainers to IAATE standards. Mundomar believe in operant conditioning bird training methods with positive reinforcement. An enrichment programme that stimulates the natural behaviour of different bird species is essential. Their programmes meet educational and welfare purposes which guarantee the optimum physical and psychological condition of the birds. IAATE shape bird educators as well as trainers. Mundomar’s educational bird shows hope to

raise the general public’s awareness on ecological aspects. Mundomar has a specific programme of numerous activities for school children that include lectures and workshops to this aim. The role of nature parks and zoos should be to promote through education and conservation, positive values towards the environment and the animal world... a maxim that Mundomar upholds inside and outside its facilities, and consequently the reason for their participation in the Portugal forum.

Javea U3A boost for firefighters Members of Javea U3A showed their support for the volunteer firefighters who did such a heroic job in battling the recent blazes by donating over €1,300 at their monthly general meeting. They raised the money for the ISVH Bomberos of Balcon al Mar from a collection at the door of the Parador Hotel as well as the sales of special T-shirts. The funds were boosted by one anonymous donation of €500 as well as a personal contribution of €100 by Javea U3A president Eric Atkins. Eric thanked fellow members for their generosity, explaining that fundraising must continue in order to help the firefighters to maintain and replace equipment. “For example, a new fire engine costs €140,000 so it is essential that we carry on supporting the Bomberos so that we can be better protected,” he said. Then to the applause of the audience, the president “stripped off” his shirt to reveal that he had also purchased a ‘Javea Has Heart’ fundraising T-shirt! Speaker at the meeting was Javea U3A member Alan Oliver, whose talk entitled “The Second Republic (1931 onwards) and the Spanish Civil War 17 July 1936-1 April 1939” was well received. Thirty-six new members signed up at the meeting, boosting membership to well over 1,300. For details of the many groups and activities on offer, and how to join, visit

ADAPT in school Six years ago, the ADAPT Association of San Pedro was approached with an idea for a new scheme whereby volunteers would assist in the teaching of English in the schools in the San Pedro area. As always, ADAPT rose to the challenge and some members came forward to give up a few hours of their time each week to help alongside the school teachers. In the beginning, volunteers only went during Summer School and taught the children with English nursery rhymes and played English board games. The project has gone from strength to strength and now ADAPT has a total of 17 volunteer members in five San Pedro and Lo Pagan schools. The schools are Los Pinos, Las Esperanzas, Maspalomas, Nuestra Señora del Carmen and Villa Alegria. Eithne Lawler and Nicky Kehoe were coordinators for the School Monitor Project for six years. They have worked tirelessly and thoroughly enjoyed the task, but now, due to relocation and work commitments, they have stepped down. The President of ADAPT, Janet Pierce, presented bouquets to Eithne and Nicky and thanked

them for their dedication. Members then welcomed Carol Beech as the new coordinator of the ADAPT School Monitor Project. ADAPT meetings take place in the Pensionista Centre, Lo Pagan, at 10.30am on the first Saturday of the month. New members welcome. See for further details.

Can you help? Since opening its doors in July 2012, volunteers at the Giving4Giving charity have raised well over €56,000 to help and support local cancer charities and other worthy causes up and down the Costa Blanca through sales at their charity shops and also organising various fundraising events. As a growing charity, Gary James, the charity coordinator, is delighted to announce that an additional charity shop is to be opened in early November this year in Altea. Situated on the high street, not only will the new shop help to provide additional income for the charity; hopefully it will also benefit from becoming part of the local community and raise awareness of the vital work and people it supports. Donations are urgently needed to fill the empty shop,

ready for the grand opening in November: clothing, footwear, bric-a-brac, electrical goods, household linen, furniture, coat hangers, etc. Your kind donations can be dropped off at any of the other shops located in La Nucía, Finestrat and Altea, or Gary can arrange a pickup service for larger items, covering all areas. The charity is also appealing for volunteers to join the team running the shop. If you enjoy meeting new people and would like to make a difference in the local community, please get in touch soon. The shop is situated in Avenida Jaime I, opposite Altea town hall. Planned opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 10am-2pm. For any further information, please contact Gary on 603 137 697 or visit our Facebook page: Giving4Giving charity.

Non-residents tax We continue to see evidence of the Spanish tax authorities clamping down on tax evasion in all its forms and an ever-increasing use of the UK tax authority (HMRC) as a collections agent of unpaid Spanish taxes. People with a “foot in both camps” need to take note! For people who are genuine non-residents (spending less than 183 days a year in Spain being the main indicator of this), remember that you have a deadline of December 31 to make your non-residents tax return for

the previous calendar year. The amount of tax you pay is based on your rateable (“catastral”) value which is stated on your SUMA bill. If you rent out the property, then you need to file quarterly returns of the rental income and allowance against the tax will be given for expenditure incurred (for electricity and cleaning services, etc), provided these are backed up by a proper invoice (“factura”). Please note that you are now also obliged to have a licence in order to rent your

• • property and we can help you with the process. It is also important, if you are a non-resident, to ensure that the Spanish tax office has a correct and up-to-date address in Spain for you. That way, there can be no missed deadlines, unwanted fines and interest charges. It is not too late to get your tax affairs in order and we can offer a no obligation chat to see where you stand tax-wise. There is no need to sit and worry. Express Legal Solicitors can help with all tax matters in your language.

The Exploration of the Moon The Costa Blanca Astronomical Society are pleased to invite everyone to a public talk to be given by Dr Katherine Joy of Manchester University. Katherine will be visiting Denia especially to give a talk at the Sala de Actas (first floor), in the Casa de Cultura, Denia on Saturday, October 22 starting at 7pm. Katherine specialises in studying the moon, so her talk is entitled The Exploration of the Moon. Katherine gained her PhD in Planetary sciences at the University College London, specialising in the study of lunar evolution. She later joined a NASA team studying the bombardment history of the moon by examining the lunar surface and rock samples returned by the Apollo astronauts. Katherine is currently a senior lecturer at Manchester University School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences and was also a member of a team that visited Antarctica searching for meteorites. In her talk she will give us some insight into how scientific research into the moon is done and what specifically we have learnt from studying the samples brought back by the lunar missions. She will provide interesting perspectives from someone so closely involved in the scientific projects that studied lunar

Oh what a night! Simon Weston CBE was in town once again last Friday evening when he presented his one-man show ‘An Evening with…’ to a packed audience at the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras. Simon, who is regarded as one of the very best speakers on the UK circuit, showed his worth as he captivated over 350 people who were there to pay homage to the Falklands veteran. The former Welsh Guardsman was supported on stage by one of the Costa Blanca’s foremost young talents, Rebecca Holt, who, despite her tender years, has also been a longtime champion of the Royal British Legion, organisers of the evening’s event. And it was Rebecca who got the evening underway with one of her signature acts, a tribute to the war years for which she was dressed in the uniform of an ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association) L/Cpl. She gave a masterly performance featuring many of the period hits that were especially

well received by the enthusiastic audience. After a short introduction by Branch President Pastor Keith Brown, there followed a rapturous reception for Simon Weston. Simon then spent over an hour recounting his days, from the fateful invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982 that so dramatically changed his life, through the 90 or more operations and medical procedures he has undergone, his family life, experiences, and his relationship with the royals, throwing in many anecdotes and amusing stories along the way, all the while radiating optimism, courage and strength. His irrepressible humour and infectious enthusiasm was clearly visible as he had his Mil Palmeras admirers enraptured for almost an hour before switching from direct delivery as he then provided the audience with an opportunity for questions and answers, his final message being one of sheer determination and acceptance of whatever diffi-

culties you are likely to meet along the way. “The only obstacles to achieving one’s targets and successes are those you create for yourself,” he said, his words never failing to inspire. As Simon concluded his presentation the audience rose to their feet in applause. Rebecca then returned to the stage for her second spell, this time following a more modern theme.

Simon continued his evening’s work where he was in great demand to sign almost 50 purchased copies of his autobiography. He then spent over an hour meeting many of the Mil Palmeras crowd before the evening was finally brought to a close. The event was organised by the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion and supported by the generous sponsorship

of Avalon, Currencies Direct and Sanchez Butron Solicitors, with profits donated to the annual poppy appeal. More information on the work of the RBL locally can be found at http:// uk/branches/orihuela-costa The Orihuela Costa Branch meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras starting at 7.30pm.

Anti-ageing hair tips 쐽 Keep your hair healthy, have regular salon treatments and use the best cleansing and styling products for your hair. 쐽 If you have grey hair, ask your hairdresser to blend your grey gradually with a hair colourant. That way it looks much more natural than suddenly going from grey to a block colour. It is also easier to manage when the colour grows out. 쐽 Don’t be afraid to experiment with hair accessories. Alice bands and ribbons are always a quick and stylish way to make a normal style look more sophisticated. Cute little hairpins are also a great way to glam up your hairdo. 쐽 Adding colour to your hair is an easy way to avoid looking older. A warm colour will brighten your skin tone.

Scent stats New research reveals that it takes the average Brit until their mid-30s to find the One - the one fragrance they love, that is. The study from Heathrow Airport, which is home to 3,405 fragrances across 104 brands, found that Brits dabble with just 10 different perfumes over their lifetime,

with 16% saying they're stuck in a rut, having spritzed their signature scent for decades. What makes us splash out on a new bottle? A new job (4%) or a big birthday (5%) are influential for some, while a new relationship or a trip abroad are the most common catalyst at 7% each.

Firm up bingo wings Wobbly arms can be a bugbear to us all, but a quick blast of this move every day can make a big difference to the tone of the triceps muscle on the back of the upper arm, which is notoriously slack in women. Bend the opposite knee to the one you’re going to move and lean

forward at a 45-degree angle. Extend your arm towards the ceiling, then lower backwards to fully contract your triceps muscle. The only movement that should occur is between your elbow and your fingertip. Repeat 15 to 20 times on each arm.

Chocolate is good for the heart Eating one piece of dark chocolate a day could prevent heart disease and help diabetes sufferers by reducing blood sugar and insulin levels, US scientists have revealed. In the study by experts at Brown University, experts examined the cardiometabolic health of 1,139 volunteers who consumed chocolate flavanols in 119 different trials. They identified how flavanol in cocoa plants decreases artery inflammation. They found 600mg a day of

flavanol-rich cocoa - like natural dark chocolate or pure hot cocoa - dramatically decreases your risk of developing heart disease. Flavanols are antioxidants that naturally occur in cocoa, as well as some fruits, vegetables, tea and red wine. They also saw an increase in HDL, or 'good' cholesterol, when between 200 and 600mg a day was consumed. The benefits depend on the amount of cocoa taken, making plain chocolate better than white or milk varieties.

Quirónsalud offer free mammograms for early detection of breast cancer A medical certificate will be required in order to have the test.

Valencia, 13th October 2016. Hospitals Quirónsalud Valencia and Torrevieja launch a cam-

paign to prevent breast cancer by conducting free mammograms to mark World Breast Cancer DAY on October 19th. Early diagnosis of the disease through mammography reduces mortality rate between 15% and 20%. Women interested in having a mammogram in Quirónsalud Valencia hospital should make an appointment by calling 96 339 04 00. At Quirónsalud Torrevieja mammograms will be performed free of charge from 17th to 21st October. For further information please phone 966 92 57 61, email or see the web

Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja will set up an information stand in Plaza de la Constitución on World Breast Cancer Day on Wednesday October 19th from 10am till 2pm. Advice will be offered on breast cancer prevention and the importance of early diagnosis. Cancer sufferers and their relatives, and members of the Torrevieja Cancer Association (AFECÁNCER) will also be there. Balloons with messages of support for the fight against breast cancer will be released at noon, and people can express their support on the solidarity boards. Quirónsalud will be explaining how to perform a self-examination and handing out leaflets with a step-by-step guide.

The importance of prevention

Specialists recommend having a first mammogram at 40 years of age and to repeat the test every two years for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. "However, a specialist may recommend a yearly mammogram for closer monitoring in certain cases" says Dr. Teresa Olmos, Oncologist at Quirónsalud Hospital Valencia. Director of the Oncology Department at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, Dr. Antonio Brugarolas is successfully treating patients on a personalised basis, after a genetic analysis of the tumor has been undertaken. A biopsy is taken so that genes related to the response or resistance to chemotherapy can be evaluated, and the profile of the tumor’s response to each of the antitumor drugs is studied. The data obtained shows which drugs will be more effective and those that will not. This means the most effective medication can be administered according to the tumor’s gene factor and this is clinically beneficial for 70% of patients. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Spain and represents 29% of all cancers; it is estimated that one in eight women will suffer from breast cancer. Doctor Olmos explains the increased incident rate, "breast cancer previously affected women over the age of 50, but the rate in women under 40 years has increased by 10% over the past few years. The reason for this increased incident rate may be due to changes in lifestyle, women having fewer children or having children later in life".

Anti-ageing superfoods Six of the top anti-ageing foods. Tomatoes Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant and anti-cancer agent that helps to prevent cell ageing. Cooking tomatoes releases five times more lycopene than is available from raw tomatoes. Lycopene is beneficial for protecting against coronary heart disease and cancer. Lycopene is also important for eye health. Garlic Garlic has antioxidant, antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral properties. While it is used to help treat

intestinal, respiratory and skin infections, its most important use is to help maintain a healthy heart and circulation. Garlic can reduce high blood pressure, lower levels of harmful blood fats (LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides), reduce blood stickiness, dilate blood vessels and improve peripheral blood flow. Dark green leafy vegetables Dark green leafy vegetables are a rich source of vitamin C, carotenoids and anticancer substances. They also contain a variety of carotenoid pigments, which help to prevent age-related eye problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Soybeans Soybeans contain isoflavones, hormone-like substances that help to prevent ageing due to hormone imbalances. They are also believed to help protect against hormone-sensitive cancers, such as those of the breast and prostate. Nuts and seeds Nuts and seeds are rich in vitamin E, selenium, zinc and essential fatty acids. Selenium is needed to produce antibodies, for healthy skin and thyroid funcion, as well as being vital for the action of many important antioxid-

ant enzymes in the body. The richest dietary source of selenium is brazil nuts. Walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and have been shown to help reduce a raised cholesterol level. Bio yogurt Live bio yogurt, which contains friendly probiotic bacteria, helps to boost intestinal health, and aids digestion and the absorption of nutrients from the gut. Probiotic bacteria have been shown to boost immunity and help to guard against some allergic conditions such as excema.

What is a Bartholin’s cyst? The Bartholin’s glands are found just behind and either side of the inner lips that surround the entrance to the vagina. They are usually not noticeable because they are normally only pea-sized. Their job is to secrete fluid that acts as a lubricant during sex. The fluid travels down tiny tubes, called ducts, into the vagina. If the ducts become blocked, they will fill with fluid and expand. This then becomes a Bartholin’s cyst.

The onset of a cyst is very rapid, over a matter of days or even hours. The condition is most common in sexually active women in their 20´s and 30´s and affects approximately 2% of women. As the Bartholin’s glands do not start functioning until puberty, Bartholin’s cysts do not usually affect children. Often these cysts stay small and do not cause any adverse symptoms. However, in some cases the

cyst can become infected, which can cause a painful collection of pus (an abscess) in the Bartholin’s gland. All new lumps and bumps should be seen by your family doctor to determine exactly what they are and for appropriate treatment. If your doctor says that that a swelling is harmless and it is not causing you any discomfort, you may be advised to ‘wait and see’ but return to your GP if you

have a cyst that becomes large or painful, or is uncomfortable when you sit or walk. Several treatments are available to treat any pain or infection and, if necess-

ary, the cyst will be drained. Most treatments involve a minor surgical procedure. Unfortunately, Bartholin's cysts are known to come back in up to 38% of women. NB: if they present after the age of 40 a malignant cause must be excluded.

Pets In Spain

Frodo is a male Rottweiler, neutered, and about 5 years old. He is really friendly, well behaved and walks well on the lead. He is fantastic with other dogs of either sex and is a gentle-mannered dog who would be fine with children. Ring the shelter on 657 689 567.

Timmy is around 4 months old and looking for a forever home. He was found on the streets, desperate for attention, and was happy to go straight into a friend’s arms. Timmy is a wonderful, happy and healthy little boy, great with other dogs, cats and good on a lead. He will be medium size when fully grown. Call 645 469 253

Sebra, female, shelter since 27.03.2010. Alsatian Mix, DOB 15.12.2009. 60cm. Sebra was thrown over our fence in the night, together with her sister Santa. When we arrived here in the morning we were greeted enthusiastically. Both dogs were

covered with ticks and full of fleas. Therefore we had to remove the ticks first and then apply a “anti flea shower”. Sebra is a little bit sweeter than her sister. She sits down when somebody talks to her and she is very fond of being cuddled. For more information call 618 754 635.

S.C.A.N. Cats For Adoption I am the beautiful Carob. I came in with two siblings and have been at S.C.A.N. since May 2016. I am extremely handsome, very friendly and affectionate and I love being cuddled. I would love a forever home. Can it be with you? Why don't you come and see me? For Adoptions ring Pam 615 408 788. had everything done. She lives inside, so is used to the norms of home life. For more info on this adorable girl please telephone the PEPA helpline on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail. com

A visit home It’s been a bad couple of weeks for our world and for our children in particular; a hundred miles or so north of where I sit, two children were found dead in the back seat of a stolen vehicle, allegedly smothered by their mother… yes, their mother. On the other side of the world, a five-year-old boy with blood running down the side of his faced sits in a dazed shock in the back of an ambulance after being pulled from the rubble brought on by an airstrike in the mideast. The picture of this still managed to horrify the world, even though whole families are dying in so many places that the news has become commonplace and our senses have been dulled to the revulsion we feel. Closer to home, a familiar scene plays out almost every night on the evening news; gunshots, patrol cars, flashing lights in the dark, yellow caution tape, ambulance, distraught neighbors; a scene so common It might as well be the same piece of film. I tried to escape this lunacy and the helpless feeling that comes with it by hitting the buttons on the remote, only to find the airwaves filled with commercials of politicians making outlandish claims about their opponent. This should have been no surprise to me. Over the past couple of months, we have been subjected to endless renderings of these allegations that paint office seekers of all persuasions as greedy, heartless and dastardly individuals who, if elected, will bring ruin to the country. There is no mention of what we’re going to do about the awfulness taking place right outside our windows. The takeover of our airwaves by the office seekers was the last straw. Trying to come to grips with the horrendous daily events alongside the politicians insulting our intelligence at every turn wasn’t working. Everyone has their way of coping when they need relief from overwhelming situations and I’m no different. In our younger days when we were struggling to make ends meet, my way was to load my wife Susie and the kids in the car and go back to my hometown of Loogootee, Indiana to get as far away from problems as I could, even if it was only for a few hours. Luckily, Susie and I already had a trip planned to visit that part of the country; we had signed up to participate in a chili cook-off at the county park outside of town. So I loaded Susie in the car and headed for southern Indiana to spend the weekend camping. Aside from the chili competition, I didn’t have any plans other than to seek refuge from all the craziness, and even though I knew better, I was hoping that the lunacy had not yet made its way to my hometown. I wanted to visit with the few relatives I have left and hopefully find some old friends with whom to laugh and talk about the carefree and more innocent old times. I never got around to seeing any relatives or friends on this trip. Instead, our day was filled by enjoying a beautiful October day preparing and serving chili to a crowd who had come out to enjoy the festivities. Our chili didn’t win, place or show but the experience was just what I needed to raise my spirits, and as we made our way home, I was busy composing another light-hearted look at

Across the Pond 33

On the box Anne Robinson's Britain (BBC1, 8pm) Thursday, 20/10/2016 Anne explores body image among the younger generation, investigating whether they are under more pressure to look good than ever before. She meets make-up addicts who spend more time getting ready for a night out than on the night itself, a couple of gym obsessives in pursuit of social media followers and a young man going under the knife in the hope that one day he will be 'perfect'. She also meets some people who could not care less about how they look - including naturists happy to let it all hang out, and a young comedian speaking out against body shaming - and asks outspoken actress Miriam Margoyles for her thoughts on the subject.

A regular column by Gordon Grindstaff, 'Across the pond'

life to present to you today in this space. Unfortunately, I never got it done. During that beautiful day in southern Indiana, while I was busy browning the onions in my chili recipe, two police officers were murdered in Palm Springs, California. One of them was a young mother of a four month old; the other was a father of eight, a 35-year veteran of the department and only a month away from retirement. The unfairness and the unbelievable sadness of this event almost overwhelmed me. But before I could even take time to grapple with this, new, endless derogatory information on both of our Presidential candidates was racing through our news media and the social networks as if by magic, further muddling an already vile and depressing election season. I spent a restless night trying to come to terms with the situation in the world today and woke up with Susie telling me to get ready for church. Church was the last thing on my mind; I struggle every day and sometimes every hour with the existence of a supreme being, logic telling me that this can’t be possible. But then, on the other hand, when I look at life and all the things required to produce and keep it going, it can’t all be coincidental. Someone had to have a hand in our creation. Nonetheless, what with Susie doing the motivating, I rolled out of bed and got dressed. The service was held outside in a grotto behind the church and the weather was again perfect. Young children did the scripture readings, hardly stumbling over the bigger words. Father Francis told a story about a young boy being rescued from a near drowning and his mother being upset that the rescuer didn’t save the boy’s hat as well. For some reason, the story resonated with me. I sat there in the sun, contemplating the moral of that story while watching the breeze blowing through the leaves beginning to take on their colorful hue as they always in this season of Fall, year after year. I don’t know why, but knowing that this miracle of nature was taking place once again made me feel just a little better about the world situation. Maybe I’ll never figure out the God part of my life, and most likely I’ll never learn to cope with all the perversion in the world, but for a while, at least, I can say to the politicians and the bearers of bad news, go ahead and give it your best shot. I’m ready.

Pink Floyd Beginnings 1967 - 1972 (BBC4, 10pm) Friday, 21/10/2016 They were one of the world's biggest rock bands who gave us some of the most iconic and memorable albums of all time, including Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall. Tapes of early historic appearances have been dug out and dusted down for this documentary covering their early days, from the era when they were The Pink Floyd to a year before DSOTM turned them into global superstars. A perfect chance to see those crazy diamonds before the money really started rolling in for Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour and company.

Virginia McKenna's Born Free (C4, 7pm) Sunday 23/10/16 In 1966, the film Born Free was released. It told the story of Elsa the lioness who, after being orphaned as a cub, was raised by conservationists Joy and George Adamson in Kenya. Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers played the couple, and in 1991 they established a foundation named after the film which fights for the rights of wild animals and conservation issues. Now McKenna, who is a sprightly 85, is returning to Africa, where she and Travers shot the film over a nine-month period. She takes a tour of the locations that were used and reveals how up close and personal they had to get to the animals during the days before CGI effects were invented. There's also an interview with Don Black, who penned the Oscar-winning theme song's lyrics.
