Monday 4 November 2013

From president ESTHER ... An enjoyable evening was spent on Monday night at our Vocational meeting at the Kalgoorlie Racecourse. The Museum has some wonderful items of racing history for Kalgoorlie-Boulder which would make it the envy of many a Race Club around Australia. Well done to Sue Morley winning the Quiz put together by the Racing Club staff. Thank you to Edward for being our Pizza Delivery boy. They were delicious. In amongst the myriad of announcements on the night I forgot to mention that the Bar Tab was being picked up by the Club.

 Meeting Wrap Up  District News  Meeting Attendance  Meeting Roster

Thank you to all members who assisted at the Sausage Sizzle at Harvey Norman on Saturday. I need to make special mention of the efforts of Edward as our hawker on the day. He did an amazing job. Thank you to Gavin for organising all that was needed for the Sausage Sizzle. We raised $850 to which the Club will add $150 to make a total donation of $1000 to support victims of the devastating NSW Bushfires.

President Esther

It is hoped the weather will cool down a little, ready for our morning at KBULG on Sunday. We will be continuing our partnership with KBULG by taking cuttings of native plants and propagating them for use around the City. Both the Rotary Club of Boulder and the Rotary Club of Hannans have been invited to join us so we would be doing a joint activity. At this stage we are being joined by some members of the Rotary Club of Hannans. The morning will finish off with a sausage sizzle. There will be 2 Club Sweeps for Melbourne Cup a $1 and a $5 sweep. The Tower will

also provide information so any of us who would like to can participate in their Sweeps. On Tuesday 12 November the Boulder Club will have Captain Peter Hammarsedt, from Norway who is the captain of one of the Sea Shepherd vessels which is heading to Antarctica, the M/Y Bob Barker, as their Guest Speaker. President Adam has asked if any members would be interested in attending that meeting. I have sent additional information in a separate email and will be asking for an indication of who would be attending the meeting so I can let Adam know approximate numbers. November is Foundation month in the Rotary Calendar. Rotary Foundation is the charity of choice for Rotary. The work that is done through the Foundation is amazing. There will be information about Rotary Foundation in the Bulletin throughout the month, however if you want to find out more then go to the Rotary international website and look up Rotary Foundation. Our International Director, Anne will be distributing Foundation money boxes this week to members so we can place on the counter at our work or just have at home for any loose change for Foundation. I must say I am enjoying this lovely warmer weather, but not enjoying the resultant Sinusitis from all the flowering trees etc. Kleenex is being kept in business by me alone this week! Enjoy the rest of your week while you Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

Trustee Chair's Message Dong Kurn (D.K.) Lee Trustee Chair 2013-14 November 2013 Celebrate Rotary Foundation Month. November gives us the chance to build greater ownership and pride in our Foundation. PolioPlus is successful because Rotarians believe in our commitment and support it financially. We give to the polio eradication effort because we see clearly what our money is doing and what we are helping to achieve. We all take pride in knowing that the money we give is helping to fund a polio-free world. But many Rotarians do not have the same pride and ownership of the Foundation's Endowment Fund and Annual Fund. We are still falling short of our goal of Every Rotarian, Every Year. Why? Because Rotarians do not know what good works the Endowment Fund and Annual Fund enable us to do. The Endowment Fund and Annual Fund are what make Rotary more than just an association of Rotary clubs. They allow us to share our resources, work together, and bring our work to a higher level. The greater our Foundation's resources, the greater our ability as Rotarians to meet the needs of our communities. And when every one of us donates to The Rotary Foundation, it truly becomes our Foundation – and we all share the pride in the good that it does. This is why we have Every Rotarian, Every Year. And this is why our goal for the Annual Fund in 2013-14 is US$120 million, which represents a donation from every Rotarian, averaging $100 each. If we want the freedom to be ambitious in our service, we must know that we have a strong Foundation supporting us. And if we want to know that Rotary will endure, we need a strong Endowment Fund – for whatever lies ahead.

Classification: Women’s Health Sponsor: Sue Morley

Classification: IT Management Sponsor: Cherie Wallace

In 1986 I was a 15 year old migrant’s daughter who was dragged to the Goldfields kicking & screaming, little did I know then how much I would fall in love the place and what exciting times laid ahead.

I am 45 years old, recently married to Shane, a man I met here in Kal, and have one son who is 25.

I am a management professional for 15 years working in Local, State and Federal Government with over 5 years’ experience in the area of Human Services and 5 years' experience in the Real Estate industry with one of the Leading Agencies of the Goldfields. I have consistently delivered for 25 years an exceptional level of Customer Service focusing on the person not the product. I have enjoyed a very demanding career trying to balance being a single parent, life’s and work, which is my real calling as I have had many years of personal experience as a Carer of my loved ones and the challenges in our Health system. I married a Boulder Boy Harry, and I have a beautiful 18 year old daughter Rebekah. However it wasn’t until after my husband Harry died that I experienced the true meaning of “Community Spirit” I believe that giving back is so rewarding. Rebekah and I are passionate about our amazing community and I am looking forward to being a part of the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie. I have an enthusiasm for the Goldfields and it’s extraordinary people.

I was born and raised in Tasmania and except for a few ‘field trips’ to other states, I largely attended Tasmanian schools and the University of Tasmania. I have owned my own IT business for several years, specialising here in Kalgoorlie in small business networking, applications and web pages; and I have several small to medium business clients. I also try to support women’s causes and I am hoping to set up some return to work computer training for women in Kalgoorlie who have let their skills lapse or are entering the workforce for the first time. I support other causes and tend to provide computer support/web pages to not for profit groups free where I can or at a minimal cost. I came to Kalgoorlie 2.5 years ago and was very unwell and facing the end to my life (according to my doctors). Kalgoorlie opened its heart to me and I am still here and going strong. I believe that what you give to your community you get back and try to support as many local events, organisations, etc. as I can. I owe Kalgoorlie, it literally saved my life. I have travelled widely and intend to do more and I would really like, within the confines of my disability, to volunteer overseas.
